Li Pei Mei added that the AHTV project is not limited to being a production site, but also supports the development of local talent in areas such as artificial intelligence, software development and automotive innovation.

The analyst stressed that Chinese companies also benefit from this partnership and access to the Malaysian market. In her view, the growing middle class and favorable investment environment in Southeast Asia are the main attractions for them. “By expanding into Southeast Asia – especially in business-friendly countries like Malaysia – they gain access to new consumer bases and cost advantages,” she explained.

Lee Pei Mei also noted that the right combination of policy support, strategic cooperation and industry alignment has put Malaysia on a solid path to becoming a leader in EVs in the region.

DAMASCUS, July 19 (Xinhua) — Syria's interim authorities on Friday called for restraint amid escalating violence in the southern province of As-Suwayda, vowing to send forces to contain the conflict.

In a statement, authorities expressed “deep concern and sorrow” over the ongoing deadly violence, calling the situation the result of “armed groups operating outside the law.”

“The Syrian Arab Republic reaffirms its identity as a state for all its citizens, regardless of sect or ethnicity,” the statement said, stressing that everyone must operate under a single national roof and within a single legal framework.

UNITED NATIONS, July 19 (Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed an independent scientific panel of experts to study the physical impact and social consequences of a nuclear war, a spokesman for the world body said on Friday.

“The creation of this group of 21 experts is a response to a global situation in which the risk of nuclear war has reached its highest level since the Cold War,” UN Secretary-General’s deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said at a daily briefing.

GUANGZHOU, July 19 (Xinhua) — South China's Guangdong Province's import and export volumes hit a record high in January-June 2025, compared with the same periods in previous years, according to data from the Guangdong branch of the General Administration of Customs.

Guangdong Province's total foreign trade reached 4.55 trillion yuan (about 633.9 billion U.S. dollars), up 4 percent year on year and 1.1 percentage points higher than China's average growth rate. Exports totaled 2.89 trillion yuan, up 1.1 percent year on year, while imports surged 9.5 percent to 1.66 trillion yuan.

HANGZHOU, July 19 (Xinhua) — Lishui International Airport in southern east China's Zhejiang Province officially opened for business on Friday.
