WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Miami, Florida, on Sunday morning for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on the latest draft of a peace plan aimed at ending the Ukrainian crisis.

The leaders are expected to meet around 1 p.m. ET at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, about an hour's drive from Miami.

The meeting is expected to focus on a 20-point peace plan, including a possible timeframe for a ceasefire, a proposal to establish a demilitarized zone, management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, territorial control over Donbas, and security guarantees after the crisis ends.

"We are currently experiencing some of the most active diplomatic days of the year, and much could be decided by the New Year," Zelenskyy said on his Telegram channel a few hours before the meeting.

New Year's holidays: celebrating with care for nature

December 28, 2025 Sustainable Development Goals

The winter holidays are a time of joy, gatherings with loved ones, festive preparations, and exchanging gifts. But they also put additional strain on the environment. As we bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the new, it's important to remember nature and celebrate the holidays with care for ourselves and the planet.

During the holidays, we use more resources: preparing festive meals, buying gifts in plastic packaging, using electricity for fairy lights, and traveling by plane and car to visit friends or go on vacation. Even small changes in habits can reduce negative impact on nature and support sustainable development.

Gifts: Familiar but Toxic

Gifts are an integral part of the holidays. But surveys show that people often receive gifts that are not what they expected, and some of them end up in the trash. During the Christmas and New Year holidays, household waste increases sharply – by 25-30 percent in the US and Europe.

Beautiful packaging and shiny ribbons only bring joy for a few minutes before they become waste. Many traditional gifts—shower gel, shampoo, cosmetics—may contain microplastics and surfactants, which are harmful to the environment and human health.

Electronic devices also have an environmental impact. New smartphones, computers, and gadgets require resources to manufacture, and e-waste pollutes soil and water. Before purchasing new devices, it's worth considering whether they are truly necessary.

Eco-friendly and creative gifts

Gifts can be both pleasant and environmentally friendly. For example, they could be tickets to a tour or a workshop on a fun skill, a handmade scarf, or shared activities with friends and children.

If you're choosing tangible gifts, you can make the packaging yourself using recyclable or reusable materials. Christmas tree decorations created with children will bring much more joy than store-bought ones.

Christmas tree and holiday decorations

Environmentalists recommend buying a live tree, not a plastic one, and doing so at official markets with proof of legal harvesting.

The World Wildlife Fund suggests "extending the life" of your Christmas tree after the holidays: branches can be used as supports for climbing plants, and needles can be used for aromatic baths, hair masks, mattress filling, or even cold remedies. If your tree is in a pot, it can be transplanted to your garden after the holidays.

To save energy, turn on Christmas lights only when needed and turn them off when leaving the house or going to bed.

A festive table with care for nature

It is important to approach cooking responsibly: buy local products,

Buy ingredients in bulk at a time to reduce packaging, use reusable bags instead of plastic bags, and calculate food quantities in advance to minimize waste – after all, a third of all food in the world is wasted.

Leftover food and unwanted gifts can be traded, sold, or donated to those who truly need them. These small habits will help make the holidays both joyful and eco-friendly.

Bangui, December 28 (Xinhua) — Voting for the presidential, legislative, regional, and municipal elections began early Sunday morning in the Central African Republic (CAR). Polling stations are open across the country from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. GMT).

Around 2.3 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the election, National Electoral Commission Chairman Mathias Barthélemy Moruba said in a statement posted on the commission's Facebook page on the eve of the election.

“This is the first time that our country is organizing elections of such complexity, which poses numerous challenges that require an appropriate response, and we hope that the months of preparation will lead to the successful conduct of the elections,” said M. B. Moruba.

He also stated that “any attempt at falsification, manipulation or violence is not only contrary to the democratic spirit, but is also punishable by law.”

Seven candidates are vying for the presidency, including incumbent President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who has been in power since 2016 and is seeking a third term. His main rivals are Anicet-Georges Dologuele and Henri-Marie Dondra, both of whom previously served as prime ministers of the Central African Republic.

Preliminary results of the presidential election are expected to be announced on January 5, 2026. If no candidate receives an absolute majority of votes in the presidential race, a runoff will be held. The two candidates who received the most votes in the first round will participate in the runoff.

Hong Kong, December 28 (Xinhua) — Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Finance Director Chen Maobo published a blog post on December 28, stating that Hong Kong's economy will grow by 3.2 percent by the end of 2025, slightly higher than the forecast at the beginning of the year, maintaining growth momentum for the third consecutive year.

Chen Maobo stated that in 2025, Hong Kong's asset market performance improved further, with continued capital inflows, an increase in the number of tourists visiting the SAR, steady growth in overall exports and fixed asset investment, and a stabilization of consumption. Overall, exports and investment are performing well and are the main drivers of economic growth, while rising stock and real estate prices have also reinforced positive market expectations.

According to him, local equities performed exceptionally well in the asset market, growing for the second consecutive year. In the first 11 months of this year, average daily turnover of Hong Kong equities approached HK$260 billion. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) ranked first globally in terms of funds raised through initial public offerings (IPOs), exceeding HK$270 billion as of mid-December. Four of these companies were among the top 10 IPO fundraisers this year. During the same period, follow-on financings of already listed companies exceeded HK$510 billion. In the asset and wealth management sector, net inflows into Hong Kong-registered funds authorized by the Securities and Futures Commission exceeded US$41 billion in the first nine months of 2025, more than 1.5 times higher than the entire previous year.

Chen Maobo said the residential property market in the SAR remains active, with the volume of sales and purchases in the first 11 months of this year approaching 57,000 units, an increase of approximately 16 percent year-on-year and the second consecutive year of growth. Property prices rose by approximately 3 percent, and rents rose by approximately 4 percent. Overall, the market maintains positive expectations regarding the residential market outlook. Sentiment in the office market has also improved: transaction volume in the first 10 months increased by 74 percent year-on-year, and the vacancy rate in Class A office buildings decreased slightly.

According to him, overall exports from Hong Kong showed strong performance in the first three quarters of this year, with fixed asset investment up 2.5 percent year-on-year, and private consumption benefiting from the asset market recovery and improving overall market conditions, rising 0.9 percent in the first three quarters of this year, reversing the decline seen in the same period last year.

Chen Maobo noted that Hong Kong's economy is likely to maintain its favorable momentum next year. 2026 marks the first year of China's 15th Five-Year Plan. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will more actively and proactively align its actions and initiatives with the country's development strategy, with finance, innovation and technology, and trade serving as the three key drivers of its development.

Chen Maobo added that in the new year, Hong Kong will comprehensively enhance its functions and potential as an international financial center, accelerate the construction and expansion of an international science and technology innovation hub, and improve its functions as an international trade center. By becoming more closely integrated into the country's overall development paradigm and serving its interests, Hong Kong itself will inevitably achieve greater development, create more high-quality jobs, and ensure that the fruits of economic growth and diversified development benefit its residents. -0-
