BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — There are more than 100 memorial sites and relics related to the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression outside the Chinese mainland, Li Jingxian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, said Sunday.

More than 30 of the named sites are located in countries such as Myanmar, India, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Russia, and more than 80 are in the Hong Kong and Macao SARs, he added.

Li Jingxian made the announcement at a press conference in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

According to him, the facilities are usually maintained by Chinese diasporas, public organizations, enterprises with Chinese capital or local authorities. Most of them are in relatively good condition.

China has been steadily strengthening security at such sites and has completed projects to build and reconstruct memorial complexes in Myanmar and Papua New Guinea in recent years, he said.

A memorial complex dedicated to Chinese soldiers who fought against Japanese invaders in northeast China is expected to open to the public in Russia soon.

Chinese embassies and consulates are taking inventory of these memorials in the regions under their jurisdiction and have been asked to develop plans for reconstruction and protection, as well as organize commemorative events, the official added. -0-

BISHKEK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Kyrgyzstan celebrates Independence Day on August 31.

This year, the main ceremonial event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the country's independence, with the participation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, took place the day before in the city of Jalal-Abad in the south of the country. The celebration began with the presentation of a documentary film reflecting the path of the formation of Kyrgyz statehood. Then a theatrical performance "Kelechektegi Kyrgyzstan" /"Kyrgyzstan of the Future"/ was shown with the participation of about 600 artists.

After this, the head of Kyrgyzstan delivered a congratulatory message on the eve of Independence Day.

In his speech, as reported by the presidential press service, S. Japarov noted that the Independence Day has been celebrated in different regions every year – previously it was held in the fertile Chui Valley, then in the ancient city of Osh, and now in the flourishing city of Jalal-Abad. According to him, the decision to celebrate the holiday in each region is a sign of equal attention to the seven regions of the country, confirmation that Kyrgyzstan is "a single independent state, without division into the center and regions."

The evening ended with performances by Kyrgyz and foreign pop singers.

As previously reported by local media, on the evening of August 31, in honor of the celebration of Independence Day in Bishkek, a festive concert for residents and guests of the city will be held on the main Ala-Too Square. –0–

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

The SCO summit in Tianjin will be held consecutively with events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory, so it is causing great anticipation in the international community.

At the summit, President Xi Jinping will put forward new approaches for the SCO to constructively maintain the international order that emerged after World War II and improve the global governance system, and jointly with the leaders of other member states, issue a statement on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the UN.

/SCO Summit in Tianjin/ Xinhua Commentary: Building a More Cohesive, Effective SCO

TIANJIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — With the Tianjin Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) set to open soon, joint efforts are expected to make the organization more cohesive and effective, enabling it to make greater contributions to peace and development.

This year's summit is the largest since the SCO was established in 2001, demonstrating its international influence and appeal. China firmly believes that the two-day event will lead the SCO to a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, closer cooperation, more dynamic vitality and higher efficiency, said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Bin.

It is expected that following the summit, a declaration, a strategy for the development of the SCO for the next 10 years, as well as documents on strengthening cooperation in the areas of security, economics, culture and humanitarian exchanges will be adopted.

Over the past 24 years, the SCO has grown from its original six founding members to 26 countries: 10 member states, two observer states and 14 dialogue partners, accounting for about half the world's population and about a quarter of global GDP.

Political mutual trust among member states is deepening, cooperation in various fields is yielding fruitful results. Thanks to the functioning of cooperation mechanisms at various levels, the SCO has become more mature, strong and dynamic, which has turned it into an important and constructive force in regional and international affairs.

Security cooperation has always been a priority for the SCO, which has truly become an anchor of stability and an accelerator of development in the region. Significant progress has been made in cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, investment and connectivity. Trade turnover between China and other SCO member states, observer states and dialogue partners reached a record high of US$890 billion last year. In addition to traditional areas, cooperation in green energy and the digital economy is booming.

The main driver of the growth and dynamism of the SCO is the “Shanghai Spirit”, which is characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the desire for joint development.

The “Shanghai Spirit” is the common value and the “root” and “soul” of the SCO, and it transcends such outdated concepts as the Cold War mentality and zero-sum game. To build a more effective and influential SCO, it is necessary to adhere to the “Shanghai Spirit” and improve its functioning mechanisms.

By emphasizing partnership and dialogue rather than bloc membership and confrontation, the SCO is a model for a new type of international relations.

In a volatile and turbulent international environment where power politics and regional conflicts persist, the SCO, as a key platform for uniting and cooperating countries in the Global South, is poised to play a positive role in promoting a more equal, orderly and multipolar world and building a fairer and more equitable system of global governance.

In recent years, the SCO has actively spread its voice on global governance issues. The Tianjin summit will issue a statement on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations, reflecting the SCO's efforts to safeguard the post-World War II international order and improve the global governance system.

China has consistently regarded the SCO as an important priority for its diplomatic work with neighboring countries and is committed to making the organization more meaningful and stronger and to building a closer SCO community with a shared future.

The Tianjin Summit is expected to enable the SCO to achieve greater consensus on all-round cooperation and take new, reliable measures to support its high-quality development, give more “SCO strength” to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, and bring greater stability and positive energy to the world. -0-
