RUDN students win medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Bulgaria

10 tasks, 2 days and 3 medals. Students of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences of RUDN University took part in the International Mathematics Competition for University Students in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria and returned with silver and two bronze awards.

The competition took place from July 28 to August 3 and brought together more than 430 undergraduate students (aged 23 and under) from over 50 leading universities around the world. The students solved problems from various areas of mathematics: linear algebra, mathematical analysis, number theory, and probability theory.

Set of numbers

Serafim Vinogradsky is participating in the IMC Olympiad for the fourth time. According to the student, the tasks this year seemed a little easier to him than last year. But he noted that this is only his personal feeling.

"The structure of the Olympiad is such that on each of the two days we had to solve five problems in five hours, each problem was worth a maximum of 10 points. Moreover, the first two problems are the easiest, since according to the logic of the organizers, most of the participants in the competition should be able to cope with them. And the last two problems, of course, are the most difficult. I was not able to solve them, but the points I scored for other problems allowed me to win silver," – Serafim Vinogradsky, bachelor of the Faculty of Philosophy, Mathematics, RUDN University (mathematics, 4th year).

Egor Smirnov-Maltsev and Leonid Finarevsky became bronze medalists of the Olympiad. The guys are also not newcomers to mathematical competitions of various levels.

"If we talk about a problem with one of the simplest conditions, it sounded like this: "Find all sets consisting of pairwise distinct natural numbers, where for each set M the following is true: 1) If a number x is in a set M, and a number 2x is in this set; 2) If x and y are in a set M and xy is even, then (xy)/2 is in this set. I was able to cope with problems 1–3 on the first day, but on the second day the tasks were already very difficult," — Leonid Finarevsky, Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, RUDN (Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, 4th year).

International friendship and nostalgia

To help students unwind and take a break from intense mental work, the Olympiad organizers arranged an excursion to the Rila Monastery. It was founded at the end of the 10th century and is located in the mountains at an altitude of 1,147 m above sea level. The UNESCO-protected landmark has beautiful architecture with many white colonnades and incredibly detailed wall paintings.

"And next to the monastery there was a beautiful forest and a river, in which we even had a chance to swim. As for the walks around Blagoevgrad, for me they turned out to be nostalgic, because I was not coming here for the first time," – Seraphim Vinogradsky.

Leonid noted that in Bulgaria their team was able to communicate with old acquaintances – students from Turkmenistan. The RUDN students regularly meet with the guys at international competitions. Including at the RUDN Math Olympiad and OMOUS-2025, which is held in the homeland of their friends.

"Among the new acquaintances were participants from Belarus and Cyprus. In general, this trip was memorable because we managed to walk around Blagoevgrad more, communicate more. The city has a cozy atmosphere, it is surrounded by mountains, and it is located in a river valley. It is calm and very beautiful here," Leonid Finarevsky.

CHONGQING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — At the 2025 World Intelligent Industry Expo, many visitors flocked to the booth of Agile Robots to watch the precise movements of a robotic arm on the waist of a visitor who wanted a massage.

Using sensors to detect muscle tension and apply the perfect pressure for massage, the robotic arm elicited gasps of amazement: “Her technique is even better than that of a trained massage therapist!”

The wellness robot “Dabai,” developed by Beijing-based Agile Robots, is equipped with tactile sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and can provide professional massage services.

The exhibition, which was held from September 5 to 8, was dedicated to the themes of “AI” and “Intelligent Connected Cars with New Energy Sources.” It brought together more than 600 domestic and foreign enterprises, which displayed over 3,000 innovative achievements in the field of intelligent industry.

“The physical therapy industry depends on the skills of the therapist and faces problems such as long training periods and high turnover,” said Zhang Mingfeng, an employee of Agile Robots. “The key to solving the industry’s bottlenecks is standardization of products and services.”

Zhang Mingfeng added that Dabai can identify individual meridians and acupuncture points. “Based on big data and AI algorithms, the robot provides automated physical therapy with precise targeting of acupuncture points and control of pressure force just like a professional physical therapist,” he said.

From humanoid robots that can sing and dance to floor cleaning machines and electronic pets, a variety of cutting-edge devices are now entering the everyday lives of ordinary Chinese people. These products, once available only in factories and labs, are now helping to improve people's daily lives.

“Robots are not cold machines in steel shells. We aim to create human-centric technologies that help,” said Xi Ee, brand director of one of the industrial innovation parks in Chongqing.

At the show, it showcased several innovative products, including a Braille reader, a smart sleep light with contactless health monitoring, a modular lawn mowing robot, and an electric camper that also serves as a mobile charging station.

“These innovative products cover scenarios such as home use, healthcare and outdoor activities as smart robots meet diversifying consumer demand,” added Si E.

These innovations are underpinned by the steady growth of China’s intelligent robot industry. According to data from the 2025 World Robot Conference, China has remained the world’s largest industrial robot market for 12 consecutive years. Meanwhile, the production volume of service robots exceeded 10.5 million units in 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 34.3 percent.

According to a Morgan Stanley report, China's robotics market size is expected to grow from US$47 billion in 2024 to US$108 billion by 2028, with the service robot market growing at a CAGR of 25 percent.

The children's laughter in the exhibition hall was the best confirmation of the ability of technology to improve everyday life.

"My daughter is very interested in this desktop robot pet and we are planning to buy one for her," said Li Qing, who visited the exhibition with her six-year-old daughter.

They were drawn to the adorable kitten-like robot, which can converse and display a lot of emotions, and also acts as a teaching assistant and delightful companion.

China's robotics industry is accelerating its development toward mass production and lower production costs, while building a complete supply chain from design to assembly.

China to hold burial ceremony for remains of Chinese People's Volunteers killed in Korean War

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — A burial ceremony for the remains of 30 Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) will be held Saturday in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs said Tuesday.

The remains of Chinese soldiers killed during the War to Resist American Aggression and Aid the Korean People (1950-1953) will be returned to China from the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Friday, the ministry said.

A Chinese high-ranking delegation, an honor guard of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and a Y-20 military transport aircraft of the PLA Air Force will carry out the mission of receiving the remains of the deceased and repatriating them to their homeland.

The burial ceremony will be held at the CPV cemetery in Shenyang on Saturday. Representatives from central and local governments, military personnel, war veterans, representatives of the relatives of the fallen soldiers and city residents will pay their respects to the fallen.

This repatriation was the 12th since 2014, when a corresponding agreement was signed between China and the Republic of Korea.

From 2014 to 2024, both countries, in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles, have successfully completed 11 consecutive operations to transfer the remains of 981 KPVs from the Republic of Korea, as well as related artifacts.
