Neural interfaces, exoskeletons, bionic prostheses, and transformable wheelchairs—these and other innovative devices were presented by developers at the Moscow Open Cybathletics Championship, held at the Phoenix Assistive Technology Center at VDNKh. This is the third citywide competition, combining athletics and willpower with the achievements of modern engineering and cutting-edge technology.

We explain how innovative assistive devices help people with disabilities perform familiar tasks and open up new opportunities.

Smart mirror and orthopedic trainer

Pavilion No. 37 (the Phoenix Assistive Technologies Center) at VDNKh hosted participants and spectators for all three days of the Moscow Open Cybathletics Championship. Athletes from across Russia demonstrated the capabilities of exoskeletons, neural interfaces, powered wheelchairs, and functional prosthetics, while Moscow and regional companies presented their latest developments.

The ground floor housed the "Innovation Showcase" exhibition. Russian manufacturers presented over 80 cutting-edge projects. Among them were a system for restoring hand motor function after stroke or injury, a platform for developing social skills in children, a smart mirror with speech therapy games, rehabilitation devices, bionic and cosmetic prosthetics, and other solutions designed to make life more comfortable for people with disabilities.

Moscow-based RehabMedical unveiled its latest invention, the "Dynamika" orthopedic trainer, designed to develop walking skills in children and adults. Its complex wheeled design supports the body's weight, allowing for upright posture and independent movement without restricting arm movement.

"The simulator helps develop motor skills in children with cerebral palsy and restore them after stroke, limb amputation, or spinal injury. Thanks to its sophisticated fastening system, dynamic frame, and adjustable height, it is suitable for the rehabilitation of patients of various ages, heights, and weights," explains the company's CEO, Natalia Kushvakha.

Adaptive frame, electric wheelchairs, and a gadget for the visually impaired

Sport is accessible to anyone who wants to move forward. This is confirmed by the unique developments of Adaptive Sport. The adaptive support frame for the SkyTekSport all-season ski training simulator allows people with disabilities to independently develop their physical abilities, not by fighting fear, but by overcoming it calmly and at their own pace.

Today, over 150 Moscow-based companies operate in the assistive technology sector. Some of them presented their innovative developments at the championship. The company "Ortez" showcased vibrant and stylish orthopedic devices for arms and legs, corsets, and head supports essential for injury rehabilitation. The company "Krust" created a unique gadget for the visually impaired, "Voice," with mobile internet and voice control. It allows users to listen to music and audiobooks, make calls, and take notes. And the company "Innovatika" developed a wireless device for the hearing-impaired that transmits sound directly to a hearing implant.

A separate stand was dedicated to modern wheelchairs. Some are powered by an electric motor, while others gain speed thanks to an electric attachment resembling the front of a scooter. The device is resistant to snowdrifts and steep slopes, and its removable battery allows for comfortable travel around the world.

Bionic prostheses and neural interfaces

At the Innovation Showcase exhibition, Moscow manufacturers presented a wide range of modern prosthetics. These included cosmetic and functional bionic hands, wrists, forearms, shins, and feet. The capabilities of these artificial limbs are also impressive: wrists rotate 360 degrees, and fingers bend at the joints. And bionic prosthetics with sensors and microprocessor control perform movements based on muscle impulses. Large-volume carbon and rubber overlays contribute to their aesthetic appeal.

"I lost both legs while serving in a special military operation. I received prosthetics, but the mechanical designs weren't particularly appealing. So I tried 3D-printing my own. The first ones were made of cardboard bonded with carbon fiber film, then plastic, and finally, I settled on practical rubber. Not long ago, I registered my brand, and the first orders have already arrived," shares Boris Petrikov, founder of Nolan.

Among the cutting-edge developments, the neurochat system created by the Moscow-based company of the same name deserves special attention. This innovative hardware and software system enables people with speech and movement impairments to communicate online. Using a wireless neurochat headset, users can mentally focus on specific letters and images highlighted on the screen and then send a message to the chat.

Guests and participants of the championship were able to test modern neurotechnology in the right wing of the pavilion. Neuroracing was held there. Red cars surrounded by orange cones were controlled solely by the power of thought. A "pilot" propelled them forward and stopped them at the finish line using a wireless neuroheadset worn like a headband.

"It's a very interesting technology. It's not always easy to control the car the first time; you need to really concentrate to get it going. I think developments like this could significantly make life easier for people with disabilities and be a step into the future," says championship participant Pavel Kachura.

Electric wheelchair racing

The championship's main event, the cybathletics track, hosted the cybathletics competition in seven disciplines. This year, three times as many participants applied as in the first season: 324 athletes from 46 regions of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. Of these, experts selected 130. Various tracks were prepared for the cybathletics competitors. Speed was required, but precision was also a factor.

"The courses were challenging, and the cybathletes pushed themselves to the limit. We change the tasks and routes every time, introducing new disciplines. Participants can come to the center at any time to prepare for the competition. The lineup of competitors changes year after year: this time, the majority of athletes competed in the lower-limb prosthetics categories, and they demonstrated exceptional skills," says Alexander Lyubinsky, Director of the Cybathletics Union.

One of the most spectacular was the "Electric Wheelchairs" category. Participants navigated obstacles simulating everyday environments: elevators, ramps, stairs, and public transportation. Judges recorded their time and accuracy, then tallied their scores. After a fierce and spectacular battle, second place went to Elena Lebedeva, a graduate of the Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. Last year, she also won silver at the championship. Olga Persianova, meanwhile, once again took home the gold cup, completing the course in a record time of two minutes and 14 seconds.

"I've been using a wheelchair for 16 years now: I travel a lot around the city and use public transportation. I'm also developing the 'Wheelchair Football' project, which has an adult and youth team. I'll use the prize money to purchase a special wheelchair for the players," the winner shares.

The Phoenix Assistive Technology Center is a unique space for stimulating the growth of new developers and manufacturers of assistive technologies. The project, run by the Human Capital Development ANO, is being implemented for entrepreneurs in the field of assistive technologies, foundations, government organizations, and other companies involved in the industry.

Washington, September 23 (Xinhua) — The United States has banned Iranian diplomats attending the UN General Assembly in New York from shopping at large retailers like Costco and purchasing luxury goods, the State Department announced on Monday.

"This week, the United States took action to exert maximum pressure on the Iranian regime by restricting its UNGA delegation's travel and access to luxury retail outlets and luxury goods," the department said in a statement.

As noted, the Iranian delegation can only visit areas strictly necessary for travel between the UN headquarters and their place of residence.

The State Department said diplomats' membership in club-type stores, as well as the ability to purchase items such as watches, furs, jewelry, handbags, wallets, perfumes, tobacco, alcohol and cars, are "benefits" that require U.S. government approval.

A public notice scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday says Iranian diplomats and their dependents need State Department approval to “obtain or otherwise maintain membership in any club-type wholesale store in the United States, including, but not limited to, Costco, Sam's Club, or BJ's Wholesale Club, or to purchase merchandise from such club-type wholesale stores by any means.”

In addition, Iranian diplomats in the United States also need to obtain permission to purchase goods worth more than $1,000 and vehicles worth more than $60,000, local media reported.

The Donald Trump administration previously imposed visa restrictions on foreign diplomats planning to participate in UN work. Representatives of UN member states, including approximately 150 heads of state and government, are currently in New York to participate in the High-Level Week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. According to the Associated Press, Iran is the only country whose diplomats have been subject to special restrictions.

Beijing, September 23 (Xinhua) — Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Northeast China's Jilin Province has long been a popular tourist destination for tourists from the Russian Far East. Over the past two years, the number of tourist destinations for Russian travelers has gradually expanded from Hunchun and Yanji to Longjing, Dunhua, and other Chinese cities. Recently, thanks to the introduction of a trial visa-free regime for Russian visitors, cross-border youth tourism in Yanbian has gained momentum, the Yanbian Chenbao (Yanbian Morning News) newspaper reported on Monday.

As a reminder, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun announced at a regular press conference on September 2 that China would introduce a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding ordinary passports from September 15, 2025, to September 14, 2026.

Russian citizens holding valid ordinary passports will be able to visit China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchanging visits, and transit. However, their stay in the country cannot exceed 30 days.

The Liudingshan Cultural and Tourism Zone in Dunhua attracts large numbers of Russian tourists with its natural landscape and cultural heritage. The zone's administration continues to improve its services, including currency exchange, multilingual signage, and welcoming tour groups. From January to August 2025, the number of Russian tourists visiting the zone increased by 42% compared to the same period last year.

"Since the introduction of the visa-free regime, the number of Russian tourists has increased significantly. We will continue to improve the level and detail of our services to promote the internationalization of Dunhua's tourism market," said Yuan Hong, head of the Liudingshan Municipal Publicity Department.

According to Li Yan, head of the Yanji West Market, many Russian tourists, mostly young couples and families with children, come here every day to shop. Popular items include clothing, traditional Korean jewelry, and local delicacies such as baked fish slices.

"After China introduced a trial visa-free regime, the number of Russian tourists in the Western market increased by more than 20 percent compared to the same period, and they visit every day. We optimized our services in advance and created a multilingual logo for Russian tourists. Now, using translation software, we can ensure seamless communication, making Russian tourists' travel in Yanji more comfortable," Li Yan added.

Since the introduction of the visa-free regime, there has been a significant increase in the number of young Russian tourists seeking advice, and more and more Russians are signing up for trips to Yanbian, said Zhang Guangqiang, general director of a local travel agency.

He predicts that passenger traffic will increase significantly when autumn holidays begin in Russia at the end of October. As part of the China-Russia Years of Culture, the travel agency will focus on launching a number of cultural exchange products based on permanent tour groups and will organize Sino-Russian study tours for tourists from both countries. Furthermore, the travel agency also plans to resume the car-based tourism project to Jilin for Russian tourists.

Ramallah, September 23 (Xinhua) — Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday reiterated his condemnation of Israeli crimes and the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel. He resolutely stated that the State of Palestine is the only legitimate entity entitled to assume full control over post-war Gaza.

Speaking via video link at the High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Realization of the "Two-State Solution" Principle, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia in New York, M. Abbas called for a permanent ceasefire, guaranteed delivery of humanitarian aid through the UN and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the release of hostages and prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and the beginning of reconstruction in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The president said Hamas would have no role in governance, calling on the group, along with other militias, to hand over their weapons to the Palestinian National Authority.

M. Abbas expressed gratitude to the countries that have recognized the State of Palestine and urged all others to do so. He also called for support for Palestine's full membership in the UN.

The politician promised to hold presidential and parliamentary elections within a year of the war's end to ensure a transition to democracy. He also emphasized his support for drafting an interim constitution within three months to ensure the transition to full statehood.

M. Abbas called on Israel to return to the negotiating table “to stop the bloodshed and achieve a just and comprehensive peace.”

Last week, the UN General Assembly voted to allow M. Abbas to deliver a video message at the annual meeting of world leaders in New York after the United States announced it would not issue him a visa for the visit.

From September 8 to 16, the State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China held a "Seminar for Media Executives of Belt and Road Initiative Countries" in Xinjiang. Twenty-four media representatives from 19 countries, including Russia, Sweden, and Australia, visited Urumqi, Kashgar, and Ili to learn about Xinjiang's socioeconomic development through site visits and seminars.

Media representatives unanimously noted the rapid development of industry in Xinjiang, the impressive level of agricultural technology and automation, as well as the effective provision of basic needs of the population, such as employment and education.

During the visit, the delegation visited factories, agricultural bases, and textile factories to gain an overview of the current state of affairs. At companies such as the Xinjiang Branch of GAC Motor and Saurer Xinjiang Intelligent Machinery Co., Ltd. in Urumqi, the media witnessed rapid development and a high level of industrial automation. Wolfgang Müller, China correspondent for the German magazine Sozialismus, noted, "Chinese cars can already compete with German ones in quality, design, and engine performance, while offering a more competitive price."

After visiting a rice-growing base in Kashgar, Nsongo, a well-known columnist and political observer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said that rice is also grown in his country, but for now by hand, on a small scale, and with low yields. He expressed hope for expanded technical cooperation between the two countries in this area: "In terms of agricultural cooperation, China is unrivaled."

Improving living standards is the primary development goal of Xinjiang. In recent years, Xinjiang has continued to increase social investment, implementing comprehensive projects in employment, education, and healthcare to ensure that development benefits extend to all ethnic groups.

At the height of the tourist season in the ancient city of Kashgar, media representatives arrived early in the morning for the opening ceremony of the city's gates. In 2010, the government invested over 7 billion yuan in the Kashgar reconstruction project, which completed the renovation of dilapidated housing for 49,000 families over five years. Today, thanks to the city's unique traditional architecture, as well as its developed infrastructure and services, local residents have found stable employment in the tourism industry. Shalametguli Kari, a resident of the ancient city and owner of two shops under the "Guli House" brand, is one example of this success.

Canadian blogger Jamal Al-Sharif filmed a traditional dance performance at the Guli House. He noted, "The ancient city of Kashgar is a shining example of a balanced approach to modern development and heritage preservation. Cultural heritage is important, but new development methods must be implemented to enhance people's well-being, create new opportunities, improve quality of life, and ensure a prosperous future."

The development of education in Xinjiang also captured the attention of the seminar participants. During a visit to Kindergarten No. 14 in Nazarbagh Village in Kashgar, media representatives noted the modern educational equipment in each classroom and the enthusiastic children engaged in a variety of activities. "I see that the children are healthy and full of energy," said Per Markus Andersson, CEO and editor-in-chief of the Nordic Times, touched by their smiles. "Free education, healthy food, a variety of entertainment options, and the ability for parents to choose the type of education based on their circumstances—all of this is very important."

During the visit, six seminars were organized with the participation of experts on the history, religion and culture of Xinjiang.

Bergman, editor-in-chief of the Australian publications Asia Pacific Defence Reporter and Asian Defence Review, showed great interest in the region, meticulously documenting every detail. He admitted, "It's completely different from what I expected. We saw examples of local crafts and dances, especially at the Xinjiang Museum, where there's a deep respect for history and culture." He also plans to write an article and record a podcast for an Australian audience.

Danish scholar Niels Hahn, who regularly studies cases of US foreign interference, noted that stories about "forced labor" and "genocide" being hyped by Western media are part of an information war. "Come to Xinjiang," he urged. "It's the best way to learn the truth."

Barcelona, Spain, September 23, Xinhua — Europe has recorded 181,000 heat-related deaths over the past three summers, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal).

The report warns that climate change is causing a sharp increase in deadly heat waves across the continent. In the summer of 2024 alone, which was the hottest on record, 62,775 heat-related deaths were recorded between June and September. Italy was hit hardest, with 19,038 deaths, followed by Spain with 6,743 deaths and Germany with 6,282 deaths.

After analyzing data from 654 regions in 32 European countries, researchers found that Greece had the highest heat-related mortality rate in 2024—574 deaths per million people. It was followed by Bulgaria with 530 deaths and Serbia with 379 deaths. A total of 15 countries recorded their highest heat-related mortality rates on record.

"Due to climate change, Europe is warming faster than any other continent—twice as fast as the global average. The Mediterranean and southeastern regions have been hit hardest, with significant health impacts and rising heat-related mortality rates," said Natalia Shartova, a research fellow at ISGlobal.
