GAZA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Hamas on Sunday confirmed its readiness to fulfill a request from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to deliver food and medicine to Israeli captives in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the militant wing of the Hamas movement, said the move, however, was dependent on “the normal and permanent opening of humanitarian corridors for the passage of food and medicine to all areas of the Gaza Strip and the cessation of all forms of enemy air raids during the delivery of packages for the hostages.”

A. Obeida said the group “does not starve the hostages,” adding that “they eat the same food as our fighters and our people, and will not receive special privileges due to the crimes of siege and starvation.”

The statement came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked ICRC regional head Julien Lerisson to provide hostages in the Gaza Strip with essential medicine and food.

Between Thursday and Saturday, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad released videos showing three Israeli hostages in apparently grave condition. The videos sparked protests in Israel, where demonstrators called on the government to broker a ceasefire to secure the release of the Gaza hostages. –0–

YAOUNDE, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — At least four separatist militants, including two commanders, have been killed in a military operation in Cameroon's restive southwestern region, security sources said Sunday.

Government forces ambushed and attacked the militants late on Saturday in Maumu area in the English-speaking region, a regional military official said.

"After receiving information from our sources on the ground, our brave soldiers ambushed the separatist terrorists who were regularly patrolling the area and terrorizing civilians. They tried to escape, but our professional troops neutralized them," an official who asked not to be named told Xinhua by phone.

"Two of the four separatist terrorists were responsible for the killing of two civilians in an overnight shootout last month in the town of Buea. We will continue to provide security in the regions and protect civilians," the spokesman added.

Cameroon has sent extra troops to the war-torn English-speaking northwest and southwest regions as the country prepares to hold presidential elections in October.

Government forces have been fighting separatists in these regions since 2017. The separatists want to create an independent state in these regions. –0–

As part of the NSU NTI Center consortium, NSTU NETI scientists have developed a technology for producing ceramic powder for the manufacture of endoprostheses

The technology for synthesizing high-quality submicron α-Al₂O₃ powder for the production of medical ceramics using domestic raw materials was developed at the NTI Center for New Functional Materials at NSU by scientists from the Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI under the leadership of the head of the Laboratory of Ceramic and Metal-Ceramic Materials, candidate of technical sciences Sergei Veselov.

The project is being implemented with the financial support of the NTI Foundation at the Competence Center of the National Technology Initiative in the direction of "Technologies for modeling and developing new functional materials with specified properties" based at the Novosibirsk State University. As part of the project, the scientific team of the participant of the Consortium for New Functional Materials — NSTU NETI — had the goal of creating a full cycle of production of bioinert ceramics for joint endoprostheses: from the synthesis of ceramic powder to the release of finished products.

— Ceramic materials based on aluminum oxide and zirconium dioxide are widely used to manufacture endoprostheses that are subject to intense loads during operation — hip and knee joints. First of all, due to such advantages as high wear resistance, the service life of a ceramic implant reaches 20 years — unlike a metal analogue. In addition, the wear products of joint ceramics do not exhibit cytotoxicity — the materials are bioinert with respect to the human body. Today, the leaders in the production of aluminum oxide ceramics for large joints, primarily hip and knee joints, are Japan, Switzerland and Germany. In Russia, there is no production of ceramic raw materials for medical ceramics, so the country is significantly dependent on imports of ceramic components for endoprostheses. In this regard, we have set ourselves the task of developing a complete domestic production chain based on Russian components: from raw materials to finished products, — noted Sergey Veselov.

In the process of developing the technology for synthesizing submicron α-Al₂O₃ powder, the team of the ceramic and metal-ceramic materials laboratory managed to achieve additional capabilities in terms of managing the physical and mechanical properties of the final ceramic material. In particular, methods for managing the geometric characteristics of the synthesized powder were mastered, which allows obtaining ceramics with specified mechanical properties.

Experimental samples of ceramic powder developed at NSTU NETI demonstrate characteristics comparable to the products of leading global manufacturers: chemical purity of more than 99.5%, dispersion of less than 0.5 μm and phase composition of more than 99% α-Al₂O₃.

The powder synthesized in the laboratory has already been successfully tested to create alumina ceramics in laboratory conditions.

Currently, the research team led by Sergey Veselov, together with the NTI Center for New Functional Materials of NSU, has launched the process of patenting key stages of the powder creation technology. The NTI Center and its team of developers have also begun commercializing the developed materials and their production technologies. The next stage of the work is to find industrial partners for the widespread introduction of new functional materials for medicine and their production technologies into production.

SAO PAULO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Brazil strongly opposes economic sanctions imposed because of its trade relations with other countries, a presidential adviser said Saturday.

“We are against economic sanctions in any case, except those authorized by the UN Security Council,” said Celso Amorim, special adviser to the Brazilian president, in response to the US demand to stop importing oil from Russia.

U.S. lawmakers who met with Brazilian lawmakers earlier this week called on Brazil to reduce or even stop importing Russian oil as part of talks to cut tariffs on Brazilian exports by 50 percent.

S. Amorim said Brazil will not accept US conditions on its energy policy to reach a tariff agreement and is against the use of economic influence for geopolitical purposes. –0–

CANBERRA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — The Australian government has allocated additional funds for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong and International Development Minister Anne Ali on Monday announced that Australia would provide an additional A$20 million (US$12.9 million) to organisations delivering food, medicine and other vital aid to Gaza.

The new funding includes A$6 million (US$3.8 million) for the UN World Food Programme and A$5 million (US$3.2 million) each for UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The ministers said in a joint statement that the new aid package brings Australia's total humanitarian assistance to Gaza since October 2023 to more than A$130 million (US$84 million).

“Australia has consistently joined international calls for Israel to allow full and immediate resumption of aid to Gaza in accordance with the binding rulings of the International Court of Justice,” said P. Wong.

The funding was announced a day after tens of thousands of Australians joined pro-Palestinian protests in Sydney and Melbourne calling for an end to the war and famine in Gaza.

In Sydney, despite rainy weather and attempts by authorities to prevent the demonstration, about 90,000 people took part in a protest on the famous Harbour Bridge.

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek told the Seven Network on Monday that Australians wanted to "send a message" that there had been too many deaths. -0-
