BUDAPEST, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Hungarian health authorities have issued a level 3 heat alert, the highest in the country, for the entire territory from Thursday to Sunday, based on the latest forecasts from national weather service HungaroMet.

Forecasters say average daily temperatures in many areas will exceed 27 degrees Celsius, with peak temperatures likely to exceed 35 degrees.

Authorities warn that such extreme heat poses a serious risk to everyone's health, including those in good physical condition. The highest heat alert was last issued on June 24.

A nationwide ban on campfires in forests and within 200 metres of them is in effect from Sunday. Authorities warn that the vegetation is so dry that it could be ignited by a spark or heat source. While open fire cooking or grilling is permitted in private gardens, fires must not be left unattended.

There have been 8,106 registered open-air fires in Hungary this year, injuring 55 people and burning a total of 93 million square meters of land.

Officials are urging people to drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol, caffeine and drinks high in sugar, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day. They are also stressing that children, the elderly, the sick or pets should never be left in parked cars.

Samotlorneftegaz increases the reliability of oil production equipment

Specialists at Samotlorneftegaz, one of Rosneft's key production assets, have developed a system to protect electric centrifugal pumps from mechanical impurities. The new technology can significantly increase the reliability and efficiency of the equipment. As a result of installing innovative filters in the design, the equipment's failure rate has increased by 2.3 times to 206 days. The economic effect of the innovation in the next five years may amount to about 850 million rubles.

Mechanical impurities contained in formation fluid are one of the main reasons for the failure of electric centrifugal pumps. Small-sized pumps, due to the specific design, especially need protection from sand and proppant. After successful pilot tests at the Samotlor field, two of the most effective Russian-made filters were identified. The gravity-slot filter combines two cleaning methods at once – mechanical filtration and separation of impurities using centrifugal forces. The efficiency of the volume-wire filter is ensured by the unique properties of the filter material. The equipment allows for the screening of mechanical impurities up to 100 micrometers in size and has a throughput capacity of up to 200 cubic meters of liquid per day.

The use of filters to improve the reliability of small-sized pumps has great potential. The production fund of Samotlorneftegaz includes more than 300 non-standard diameter wells with significant removal of mechanical impurities.

Development of technological potential is one of the key elements of Rosneft's strategy. The company prioritizes innovation activities, defining technological leadership as a key factor in competitiveness in the oil market.

SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Kim Kong-hee, the wife of ousted former South Korean President Yun Seok-yol, arrived at the special prosecutor's office on Thursday for questioning over corruption charges related to the presidential couple.

As seen in livestream footage, a prison van carrying Kim Kun-hee arrived at an office in the center of the South Korean capital at around 09:53 local time /00:53 GMT/ from the Seoul Southern Detention Center in the southwest of the city.

Kim Kong-hee was detained after a Seoul court issued an arrest warrant for her on Tuesday evening at the request of independent prosecutor Min Joon-ki, who is leading the investigation into corruption charges.

For the first time in the country's constitutional history, the presidential couple were taken into custody at the same time.

Yun Seok-yeol has been held in a separate detention center since July 10 on charges of rebellion over the brief imposition of martial law last December.

Kim Kong-hee was suspected of involvement in securities fraud from 2009 to 2012, meddling in the nomination of candidates for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and the 2024 general election, and accepting lavish gifts in exchange for business favors. –0–

BRASILIA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Brazil on Wednesday launched a package of measures to support exporters hit by 50 percent U.S. tariffs.

The “Sovereign Brazil” program will provide R$30 billion (approximately US$5.562 billion) in affordable loans, tax incentives, etc. Priority is given to small businesses and those involved in perishable food products.

The initiative also simplifies public procurement in the affected rural and agribusiness sectors, modernizes the export guarantee system and reinstates tax refunds for supply chain participants.

In his speech, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva lashed out at the US government's arguments in favor of imposing tariffs. In particular, he said that Washington accused the country of politically persecuting former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial for attempting a coup d'etat. L. I. Lula da Silva noted that accusations of disrespect for human rights and arbitrary legal proceedings are unacceptable in Brazil.

"It is important to say that we should not be nervous, worried or overly concerned in the event of a crisis. Challenges exist so that we can create something new. It is unfortunate that there are no valid reasons for imposing tariffs on Brazil," the president said. The country will not apply reciprocal measures for now, the head of state added. -0-
