CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — China topped the medal table for both gold and total medals for the first time, posting its best-ever result at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Chinese team announced Sunday.

A total of 321 Chinese athletes took part in 152 events in 28 sports, winning 36 gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze medals, the country's best result since it began participating in the World Games, deputy head of the team Zhang Xin told a news conference.

This year's Games, held from August 7 to 17, were held for the first time on the Chinese mainland under the theme "Boundless Sports, Countless Wonders." China sent a 489-member team, the largest ever in the event.

"China won gold medals in 18 sports, with 45 athletes standing on the podium and breaking two world records," Zhang Xin said, adding that 10 Chinese para-athletes demonstrated their tenacity by winning five gold medals and one silver at the Games.

Most of the athletes had trained in schools, community clubs or on their own, he said. “They showed satisfactory results, adhering to the principles of zero doping and no contradictions in sportsmanship,” he said. -0-

GUIYANG, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Winners of the "Wind from China" short video contest dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia visited southwest China's Guizhou Province from Aug. 11 to 17.

During the week-long trip, more than ten representatives of Russian youth, including winners of the said competition and media workers, visited the cities of Guiyang (the administrative center of Guizhou Province), Renhuai and Anshun.

Let us recall that the competition was jointly organized by the Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow and the Asian-European Bureau of the Xinhua News Agency with the support of the Chinese Embassy in the Russian Federation. The event was officially launched on November 12, 2024, and the award ceremony for its winners took place in Moscow in January 2025.

The participants were able to share their understanding of Chinese-Russian friendship and demonstrate the interpenetration of the cultures of the two countries, which allowed them to add bright chords to the beautiful song about Chinese-Russian friendship.

Polina Fedorova, 23, was able to go on this trip after winning first place thanks to her video, which featured her own song about her love for China.

She said the experience of experiencing the intangible cultural heritage of Guizhou Province left a deep impression on her and also gave her a deeper understanding of China's local characteristics.

The girl will enter China Jiliang University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, East China, to major in Chinese language in September this year. She said that this trip will be very helpful for her future studies and life in China.

Angelina Kisetova, who works as a Chinese language teacher at a school in Russia, won second prize in the competition for her video. In it, she shared her impressions of China, talking about her own experience of studying in the city of Qingdao (Shandong Province, eastern China) and using footage from her trips to Beijing and Shanghai.

According to A. Kisetova, who visited the mountainous regions of southwest China for the first time, her trip to Guizhou gave her a new idea of China's natural landscapes. In addition, she also found the performance of the traditional local musical drama "Dixi", which tells stories of the ancient Chinese Three Kingdoms era /220 – 280 BC/, quite attractive.

During the trip, the girl deliberately took a lot of photos and videos, hoping to add to the “library of materials related to Chinese culture” in her teaching program. “I want my students to understand that learning Chinese is the key to understanding China,” she shared.

P. Fedorova also has her own plan for the future. “When I learn Chinese, I will return to work in a Russian trading company to become a professional who understands both Chinese and international markets.” -0-

SHANGHAI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The Russian Export Center (REC, VEB Group) on Saturday launched two retail stores under the “Made in Russia” brand in the city of Shanghai (eastern China).

Vice President of the Russian Export Center Alexey Solodov addressed the guests of the grand opening ceremony with a welcoming speech in the form of a video message. He noted that China remains a strategically important market for Russian exporters.

As a representative of REC contract partners in the Shanghai region, Xie Xiaoping, CEO of Shanghai Pinyinong Food Co., Ltd., is optimistic about the prospects of branded stores with Russian goods under the “Made in Russia” brand.

"I don't remember how many times I've been to Russia. My goal is to introduce high-quality Russian agricultural products to a large market like Shanghai, especially flour, formula, honey and other products that were previously little known in the southern regions of China," he said.

He believes that Russian food and agricultural products have certain competitive advantages in terms of quality and price. With further expansion of the range, including the introduction of chilled aquatic products such as Kamchatka crabs, the reputation of Russian products in the eyes of Shanghai residents could be further strengthened.

As reported, the area of the two stores in Shanghai is 139 sq.m. and 85 sq.m. They offer a wide range of goods – about 700 items from 60 Russian manufacturers. On the shelves you can find confectionery, canned goods, honey, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, dairy products, healthy food products, perfumes and much more. -0-

SANAA/JERUSALEM, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Israel struck a power plant south of Yemen's capital Sanaa on Sunday morning, the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel reported.

“The attack targeted the power generators at the power plant, causing them to fail,” the statement said, without specifying whether the attack was carried out by planes, missiles or drones. Hours later, it was reported that the flames had been extinguished and there were no casualties.

Hezam al-Assad, a spokesman for the Houthis, condemned the attack on social media X, calling Israel “a criminal and bankrupt enemy that only targets public services and civilian facilities: electricity, water…”

Residents in the area reported hearing two explosions, and eyewitnesses told Xinhua that smoke was seen near the site.

The Israeli military later confirmed the attack, saying it targeted an energy infrastructure facility used by the Houthis. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strike, which was carried out from a distance of about 2,000 km, was in response to repeated Houthi attacks on Israel. –0–

RIGA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The International Chinese-Latvian Watercolor Exhibition "The World of Watercolor" opened at the China Cultural Center in Riga on Saturday. This is the second joint exhibition of Chinese and Latvian watercolorists, the first one was held in 2024 with great success.

The exhibition features works by more than 100 artists from China, Latvia and other countries and regions.

Director of the Chinese Cultural Center Zhou Bin is delighted with the works on display: “Latvian artists have a special, very interesting view. Culture is a great heritage, and talent gives artists from both countries a chance to change the world and its thinking, to raise culture to unprecedented heights.”

“You have to be Chinese to time this outstanding exhibition to Riga Days! Cultural events certainly unite the peoples of both our countries. Ahead of us is the Baltic International Ballet Festival, where students from the Beijing Dance Academy will perform,” said Latvian Ambassador to China Karlis Eichenbaums.

“We live in difficult times, but culture should unite the world. I am always surprised how such simple materials can be used to create such masterpieces. Next year, we can hold such an exhibition in Beijing, especially since the one that took place last year in Riga was a great success. Let’s continue to work in the field of joint creativity!” he added.

The exhibition shows not only the works of professional artists, but also their students. For example, one work by Maria Matveeva, the head of the art studio for children and adults “Dance of Colors”, and two works by her students, as well as works by three students of the studio of the famous watercolourist Valery Makovyi and several students of the studio of Alexander Neberekutin, the head of the Latvian Association of Watercolourists.

"My work is called "Sunny Day in Old Riga", I wrote it just recently. The glass in the window of one building sparkled in the rays of the sun, and I thought it would be interesting to depict these reflections. In addition to mine, the exhibition includes one work each by my students Snezhana Volynets, Elena Lvova and Natalia Makarova," says Valery Makovoy.

Chinese artist Hua Jianfeng said he chose the works with the idea that they would be of interest to Western watercolor painting enthusiasts.

The opening of the exhibition featured a performance by the famous singer Lydia Breska, who performed two popular songs in Chinese.

Participants of the ArtAndFashionRiga project, who paint leather dresses with images of paintings by contemporary Latvian artists, also showed new examples of “artistic” outfits. “We have three Chinese artists in our project. Three artists from Latvia went to China and as a result painted their paintings about China, including on dresses,” said designer and author of the idea Elena Mihailova. –0–

URUMQI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — An international air route for cargo transportation of fruits and vegetables was launched on Saturday from Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The first cargo plane on the flight was carrying more than 18 tons of Xinjiang-produced products, including melons, tomato products, raisins and dried apples.

Previously, fruits and vegetables from Xinjiang were mainly transported to Middle Eastern countries by sea, land and rail, which was characterized by long transportation times and difficulties in maintaining freshness, said Zhu Shiqiang, chairman of the Xinjiang Fruit Industry Group.

With the official launch of the new shipping route, fruits and vegetables from Xinjiang can now be directly delivered to Dubai in about six hours, he said.

Currently, Xinjiang's agricultural products have been exported to more than 10 countries and regions around the world, including Thailand, Kazakhstan and Russia. In the future, there are also plans to open new air cargo routes to deliver fruits and vegetables to countries and regions such as Southeast Asia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Europe. -0-
