BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Accordions made in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are planned to be exported to Kazakhstan, Belarus and other countries, according to the opening ceremony of the accordion studio of the China Musical Instrument Society in Tacheng, local media reported.

Tarbagatai accordions will be exported through the Baktu checkpoint on the Chinese-Kazakh border. Tarbagatai has established the assembly of this musical instrument with the involvement of international suppliers of parts and components, and has become the first locally assembled accordion manufacturer in Xinjiang. In Tacheng, Tarbagatai accordions are already perceived as a major achievement in using cultural resources to promote industrial development.

According to Song Yalong, head of the city's cultural and tourism bureau, Tacheng's accordion culture has made the transition from a local phenomenon to an international brand. The most important events in this process were the first accordion festival with a record number of performers – more than one thousand people in 2016, getting into the Shanghai Great World Guinness Book of Records, and the participation of performers from countries along the Belt and Road and other foreign countries in the 2024 festival. And in 2025, Tacheng and its accordion culture were glorified by 5,282 accordion lovers, who set a new record with their collective performance, officially registered by representatives of the Guinness Book of Records. It is noteworthy that about a thousand of them played the accordion of the Tarbagatai brand.

In the first half of this year, Tacheng received about 3 million tourists, and accordion culture is considered an important factor and driver of tourist growth.

As noted, the new studio, as a platform for interaction between performers and accordion manufacturers, will contribute to the further popularization, preservation and development of the art of playing this musical instrument. -0-

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — A readers' forum dedicated to Xi Jinping's book "On Respecting and Ensuring Human Rights" was held here on Thursday.

Speaking at the forum, Jiang Jianguo, a member of the Bureau of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), vice-chairman of the Ethnicity and Religious Affairs Commission of the CPPCC National Committee, and executive vice-chairman of the China Society for the Study of Human Rights, noted that the book has been published in 13 foreign languages and has attracted readers from all over the world, working in the fields of human rights, politics, academic research, as well as in the media and think tanks.

"From this book, readers can learn about Xi Jinping's deep concern for the people and how the leader of a major party and a major country views the world," he said. Readers can also gain insight into the CPC's century-long commitment to respecting and ensuring human rights, as well as China's independent path in advancing human rights, Jiang Jianguo said, expressing hope that the book will serve as a useful guide for African countries in advancing modernization and improving governance for human rights and people's well-being.

Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai stressed that both China and Africa emphasize a people-centered approach and a path of human rights that suits national conditions, while opposing the politicization of human rights issues.

China and Ethiopia have played an exemplary role in China-Africa exchanges and cooperation on human rights, he said. China-Africa exchanges and cooperation on human rights will not only advance the cause of human rights in China and Africa, but also contribute to strengthening the China-Africa community with a shared future and promoting human progress, the diplomat added.

In turn, Liberia's Deputy Foreign Minister Jeddy Mowbray Armah said that each country, based on its own history, culture and stage of development, must choose a path that suits its national circumstances, while maintaining a common aspiration for dignity, justice and equality. This concept resonates deeply with the states of the Global South, the official added.

The event was attended by about 150 representatives of African political and academic circles, media and students. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — The 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit will be held in northern China's Tianjin City from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1. Ahead of the international event, Tianjin has launched a themed online mass campaign, "Welcome the SCO," to fully showcase the city's charm and the hospitality of its people.

According to the local newspaper Tianjin Ribao, the event includes two main blocks: audio postcards “Sounding SCO: Send Tianjin by Mail” and vlogs “SCO in My Eyes”. In recent days, city residents have been actively recording voice greetings, sharing original videos and other interactive materials, jointly preserving the bright moments of the city's life and conveying warm wishes.

According to the report, the audio postcard campaign “Sounding SCO: Send Tianjin by Mail” invites guests to create personalized audio postcards to send Tianjin’s beautiful scenery, local cuisine, culture, and best wishes for the SCO summit to their families and friends. Each postcard includes a distinctive image of Tianjin and a voice greeting, which can be shared on social media to convey the hospitality and charm of the city to others. A special postbox for audio postcards has been set up in the Wudao Cultural and Historical Quarter of the city: scan the QR code to print out an AR version of the postcard and experience Tianjin’s unique architecture through AR animation.

The “SCO in My Eyes” vlog sharing campaign encourages residents to capture Tianjin’s historical and cultural heritage, modern city appearance, and achievements in international exchanges, showcasing the city’s diversity, openness, inclusiveness, and innovation through original videos. Participants can post their work on one of the country’s popular social media platforms, and also have a chance to win prizes and special surprises.

In the Wudao district, a colorful postbox for audio greeting cards attracted many visitors. “We wish the SCO summit a complete success, we are waiting for you in Tianjin!” Ms. Wu from Heping district recorded a voice greeting with her daughter using a mobile phone. Soon, the SCO-themed audio greeting card was ready.

The mother and daughter shared this “talking” postcard in a group with their family and friends: “Tianjin is becoming more beautiful every day, let’s be worthy hosts together and support our city!”

As the evening approached, on the embankment of Jinwan Square, student Li Xiang, who was filming a vlog with a camera in his hands, talked about the history and culture of Tianjin with the Jiefang Bridge in the background. In the frame of the lens, the night landscape of both banks of the Haihe River was shining with lights, and the silhouettes of volunteers in red vests harmoniously matched the city lights.

"These humble workers and the beautiful night cityscape together create the most unique image of Tianjin. I hope that my writings will help more people get closer to the SCO summit and understand the charm of Tianjin," Li Xiang shared. -0-

Two new TIR routes have been launched: Shenyang-Tacheng-Almaty and Shenyang-Tacheng-Moscow

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Tacheng Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region launched two TIR (Transport International Road) routes on Wednesday, starting from Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, crossing the border at Baktu Port in the prefecture and eventually reaching Almaty in Kazakhstan and Moscow in Russia, respectively, the prefecture's press service said.

Recently, four trucks loaded with mechanical equipment, inspection equipment, fresh flowers and other goods left Shenyang and headed to Almaty and Moscow respectively, marking the launch of the two routes.

TIR is an international system that simplifies the transportation of goods between countries. Within its framework, the goods are sealed at the starting point of the route and checked only upon arrival at the destination, and at intermediate border crossings, checkpoint officers only check the TIR carnet data and the customs stamp for the vehicle. This reduces the travel time and reduces possible risks associated with administrative customs control procedures and damage to the goods. China joined the TIR Convention in July 2016.

Following the launch of a simplified customs clearance model at the Baktu checkpoint on 20 July, a corridor was created for TIR vehicles, which allows for preliminary verification of declared information electronically and checking of seals in order to speed up customs clearance.

The corridor will greatly reduce the time it takes to clear customs and greatly improve logistics efficiency, said Chen Weilong, an official with the Tacheng County Key Pilot Zone Administration for Development and Opening-up. -0-
