BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — A total of 2.3 million fish fingerlings were released into the Heilongjiang River (Amur) in Huma County, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, an annual event aimed at boosting the protection of fish resources in the river and improving the environment.

According to information from the website chinanews.com.cn, this time, five species of fish were released into the river, including white amur, Chinese perch and lenok.

Through the regular release of young fish, the strengthening of environmental monitoring and the crackdown on illegal fishing, a multi-faceted and multi-level environmental protection system has been established in the Huma County section of the Heilongjiang River, said Liu Heyu, a technician with the Huma County Aquatic Industry Service Center.

Heilongjiang and Russia are separated by border rivers and lakes with a total length of about 2,700 km. According to data from the provincial Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, from 2013 to 2025, the Chinese side released various species of fry into the reservoirs on the border between China and Russia, totaling over 120 million individuals, thanks to which the annual income of Chinese fishermen in the border area increased from an average of 18,000 to 35,000 yuan (about 5,000 US dollars).

A joint monitoring mechanism established by Heilongjiang Province and the Russian Far East Region has shown that the declining trend of fish populations in the Heilongjiang River basin has been reversed. In particular, the monitoring found that the population of wild-breeding chum salmon in the river increased by 3.3 times between 2010 and 2024.

The successful experience of managing fishery resources and ecological environment in China-Russia border waters was named as a typical model example of international cooperation at the UN World Conference on Biodiversity in 2023. -0-

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong called for stronger measures to combat terrorism in Syria at the Security Council on Thursday.

According to him, terrorist forces are becoming increasingly active in Syria, which is a cause for concern.

There are reports that foreign terrorist fighters were the main perpetrators of violent incidents in the western coastal region in March and in the southern province of As-Suwayda in July, Fu Cong noted. The envoy warned that continued connivance with terrorists would only cause further harm to Syria and other countries in the region.

“We urge the Syrian interim authorities to take decisive action against all terrorist organizations designated as such by the Security Council,” he said.

The purpose of the Security Council sanctions against Syria is to counter terrorist forces within the country and maintain peace and security in the state and the region, Fu Tsung said. –0–
