BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — Members of the central delegation in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region returned to Beijing on Saturday after attending celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the region's founding, meeting with local cadres and the masses, and learning about Xizang's socio-economic development.

HAIKOU/GUANGZHOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan and Guangdong provinces have been put on high alert as strong winds and heavy rains are expected from Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th this year.

Hainan Province issued a Level 4 emergency response at 11 a.m. Saturday for possible flooding and strong winds in response to Typhoon Kajiki, the provincial disaster prevention, mitigation and relief commission said. Meanwhile, the Guangdong Provincial Flood, Drought and Typhoon Prevention Headquarters also issued a Level 4 emergency response.

Typhoon Kajiki formed from a tropical depression over the South China Sea on Saturday morning. At 8:00 a.m. Saturday, the epicenter of Typhoon Kajiki was located in the sea area about 770 km east of Sanya City, Hainan Province, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 18 meters per second and a minimum central pressure of at least 998 hectopascals.

Forecasters expect the typhoon to continue moving northwest at about 25 km/h (15 mph) as it gains strength. It is likely to make landfall or pass near the southern coast of Hainan Island around Sunday evening before heading toward central and northern coastal areas of Vietnam. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan Province on Saturday issued a Level 4 emergency response for possible flooding and strong winds in response to Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th typhoon this year, the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) said.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations said the National Flood and Drought Control Headquarters has launched emergency response measures and has sent a task force to the southern province to assist local authorities in dealing with possible consequences of flooding and strong winds.

As of 11 a.m. Saturday, the epicenter of Typhoon Kajiki was located about 650 km east of Sanya City, Hainan Province. According to forecasters, the typhoon will continue to move westward at a speed of 20-25 km/h, gaining strength.

China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Saturday issued a yellow alert for Typhoon Kajiki, warning it was likely to make landfall or pass near the southern coast of Hainan Island on Sunday evening.

Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Hainan Island, as well as Xisha and Zhongsha Islands, from Saturday to Sunday.

TASHKENT, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — The number of foreign citizens visiting Uzbekistan increased by 48.9 percent in the first seven months of this year compared to the same period last year, local media reported on Saturday, citing the country's National Statistical Committee.

According to statistics, 6.3 million foreign citizens visited Uzbekistan for tourism purposes in January-July 2025. As noted, this figure increased by almost 2.1 million people compared to the same period last year.

During the period under review, China ranked seventh in terms of the number of tourists entering the country – 103,158 people.

PYONGYANG, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — South Korean troops committed a "serious provocation" on Tuesday by firing more than 10 warning shots at North Korean soldiers, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Saturday, citing Ko Jong Chol, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA).

The North Korean soldiers in question were working to build a permanent barrier near the country's southern border, KCNA reported.

The provocation is “a serious prelude that would inevitably lead the situation in the southern border area, where a huge number of opposing troops are stationed, to an uncontrollable phase, and the DPRK army is monitoring the current situation,” Ko Jong Chol said in a press statement released on Friday.

The DPRK army is currently constructing a permanent barrier on the border with the Republic of Korea as part of regular work to strengthen the border, the statement said.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese government agencies on Saturday began soliciting public opinions on a draft regulation regulating pricing practices of internet platforms, aiming to promote the healthy development of the sector.

The draft, jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the State Administration for Market Regulation and the State Internet Information Office, aims to encourage platform economy operators to set prices themselves in accordance with the law, standardize price labeling requirements and their behavior in price competition.

This step is aimed at creating a transparent and predictable mechanism for regulating pricing in this sector, a representative of the State Committee for Reconstruction and Development said.

According to the draft, platform economy operators are required to clearly indicate prices or charging standards for goods and services on their websites and related channels. The document also emphasizes that no fees should be charged beyond the stated prices.

The draft regulation is drafted in accordance with China's current laws and regulations and is expected to contribute to maintaining a fair market environment and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of both platform economy operators and consumers, the spokesperson said.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — The joint military band that will take part in the upcoming military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression will be the largest of its kind since the founding of the People's Republic of China, a Chinese military official said.

Huang Yanhui, leader of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Joint Military Band, said the band consists of more than 1,000 members, including members of the PLA Honor Guard Military Band and outstanding military musicians from other troops.

According to Huang Yanhui, the formation of the orchestra highlights the theme of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The 14 rows of the orchestra symbolize the 14 years of war, while the 80 protocol buglers in the front rows symbolize the 80th anniversary of the victory in the war.

During the parade, the orchestra will perform several classical melodies related to military themes, as well as new musical compositions created especially for the parade, Huang Yanhui added.

Kyiv, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Kyiv on Friday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who is visiting the country. The main topic of the talks was the security guarantees that official Kyiv wants to receive after the end of the armed conflict with Russia, the Office of the President of Ukraine reported.

During the conversation with M. Rutte, V. Zelensky noted that negotiations on the specific content of security guarantees for Ukraine are being conducted virtually every day. Kyiv, August 23 /Xinhua/ – A MiG-29 fighter jet crashed in Ukraine on Saturday night, its pilot Sergei Bondar was killed, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Telegram.
