CHANGCHUN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Nanyang, a small village in northeastern China, is a hotbed of fun and unusual dynamics in summer, attracting more and more travelers with its unique Russian style like a magnet.
Nanyang Village, administratively subordinate to Shulan City, Jilin Province, is built in the Russian style and is a symbol of Sino-Russian friendship.
Here, at every step, there is a generous scattering of Russian motifs: from colorful matryoshka dolls lined up in a cheerful round dance of sculptures to themed guest houses. The aroma of freshly baked bread intoxicates the mind, and the shops are bursting with exotic Russian goods. The heart of the village – the Nanyang Village Museum carefully preserves elements of Russian culture: embroidered sarafans, jingling coins, oil paintings and household utensils.
"Since Nanyang donned the Russian garb in 2017, its popularity as a tourist destination has grown by leaps and bounds over the past eight years, with more and more tourists coming here," said Li Jian, head of Nanyang Village.
“You don’t have to fly to the ends of the earth to breathe in the atmosphere of Russian architecture, taste real Russian cuisine and take home a whole bunch of souvenirs with Russian flavor. This trip awakened in me a keen interest in Russian culture,” said Yu Tingjiao, a tourist from Liaoning Province /Northeastern China/. The history of Nanyang, once an unremarkable village, is inextricably intertwined with Russia.
According to local native Chen Xukun, who has been doing business in Russia for many years, most of the villagers in Nanyang have been to Russia and did business there. They began to develop tourism and catering industries related to the neighboring country, making the village a witness to the friendship between China and Russia.

Since the 90s of the last century, many villagers have flocked to Russia to engage in the trade of clothing, footwear and headwear, electronic products, etc. At first, after arriving in a foreign country, they faced difficulties: a language barrier, lack of funds and limited channels for selling goods.

The flow of tourists looking for a colorful holiday is steadily growing, and more and more travelers are looking to spend their weekends here.

The festival also saw great success in paper cutting workshops. The ingenious works of delicately cut paper in the form of Russian nesting dolls, made by Chinese masters of this folk art, caused genuine delight among the guests from Russia.
“I studied Chinese at university. This is my third trip to China, and I learned a lot about the history and culture of this country,” said Ekaterina Igumnova, who performed on the festival stage.
According to Yu Xinlian, a student at Jilin Institute of Arts, Nanyang Village has become a true bridge connecting hearts and facilitating communication between the two peoples. -0-
