RUDN students once again became participants of the national project "Ecological Well-being"

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peoples'Friendship University of Russia –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

For several years in a row, students and experts from the RUDN Institute of Ecology have been contributing to the federal project "Clean Air" of the national project "Ecological Well-Being". In 2025, they worked in 12 industrial cities of Russia at once: Lipetsk, Cherepovets, Nizhny Tagil, Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Omsk, Novokuznetsk, Bratsk, Chita, Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk and Mednogorsk.

The students were engaged in video recording of traffic during rush hours, formed datasets for traffic intensity analysis using artificial intelligence technologies, and also assessed the impact of traffic flows on air quality in various meteorological conditions.

Sunny nights and a wind that knocks you off your feet

Students who worked in Norilsk, a city where there is no summer in the usual sense of the word, shared their impressions of working within the project with us. The weather here can change in half an hour.

"Strong wind that knocked the camera and cones off our feet and shook them, cold rain… Sometimes the bad weather lowered our work spirit and we wanted to give up. In addition, one of the difficulties was the polar day. After all, the sun does not set over Norilsk for 189 days, and even the locals, not to mention visitors, have completely lost their sleep patterns, and day and night mix. Therefore, for the first four days of our stay in the city, we could not get used to the fact that at three o'clock in the morning it was light outside and the sun was shining," – Ekaterina Kostenko, Bachelor of Science, RUDN Institute of Ecology (field of study "Energy and Resource-Saving Processes in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemistry and Biotechnology", 2nd year student).

The students also drew attention to environmental problems in Norilsk.

“The emissions here hit the mucous membranes and skin, causing unpleasant and sometimes painful sensations in the nose and throat,” says Vladislav Fadeev, a master’s student at the RUDN University Institute of Ecology (Ecology and Nature Management, 2nd year).

Local care

But despite the difficulties, the students also remembered the city from a pleasant side. Especially thanks to the care of local residents. According to the students, they always asked whether the participants of the national project needed help and even gave small gifts.

"I was approached many times and asked about something, were interested. There were various interesting conversations, even with Norilsk Nickel employees. But one of the most interesting moments happened when, as I understood, a local photographer passed by. He took pictures of everyone present. Later, when I had already moved on to other locations (it was eight in the morning!), he found me and gave me the pictures in which I was.

In their free time, the students enjoyed exploring Norilsk and its sights. For example, they visited a local museum and climbed one of the peaks of the Kharaelakh mountain range.

“In the museum, we were able to see and touch minerals and ores that we had previously only studied in theory during geology classes,” says Ekaterina Kostenko.

City of strong people

Participation in the federal project allowed RUDN students to acquire many useful skills that will be useful to them in their future work.

"We have developed, so to speak, immunity, increased stress resistance, since we found ourselves in quite unforeseen and difficult situations, from which we had to quickly find a way out, make fairly quick decisions that would subsequently affect the work, the filming. Therefore, the experience gained here is useful not only in our professional activities, but also in all spheres of life in general," – Valeria Romanova, Bachelor of the Institute of Ecology of RUDN (Ecology and Nature Management, 4th year).

"The main skill I gained was the experience of a business trip. Since in the future, when I start working in my specialty, I will most likely have to travel to different cities as well," says Daniil Dubovitsky, a bachelor's student at the Institute of Ecology at RUDN (specializing in "Energy and resource-saving processes in chemical engineering, petrochemistry and biotechnology", 3rd year student).

"Norilsk is a city of strong people, so this trip became a real test of strength and stress resistance. And these are very important qualities for further career development. I also learned how to perform the measurements that we took, and even got excited about the idea of doing an internship at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation," Ekaterina Kostenko.

About the project

The federal project "Clean Air" is being implemented within the framework of the national project "Ecological Well-being". It is aimed at reducing air pollution in large industrial centers. Its goal is to reduce the total volume of emissions in 22 cities participating in the project by 20% by 2030.

TIANJIN, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The largest summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) since its establishment will be held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 in Tianjin, the largest port city in northern China.

The summit will be attended by more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 senior officials from international organizations. Chinese President Xi Jinping will preside over the 25th meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council and the SCO Plus meeting, where he will deliver keynote speeches.

Since taking office as the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping has attended all SCO summits. Based on the strategic vision of the leader of a major power, he personally plans and manages the relevant work, indicating the direction and outlining a plan for the development of the organization.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE “SHANGHAI SPIRIT”

In his speeches at the last 12 SCO summits, Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of the “Shanghai Spirit” each time.

“It is important to consistently follow the ‘Shanghai Spirit’ as a key value and the general concept of the organization, and constantly enrich it with new content of the era, taking into account the global process and the development of the organization itself,” he noted.

"The SCO was born out of the Shanghai Five mechanism. Under very difficult historical circumstances, countries were able to resolve sensitive border issues with mutual respect and understanding through equal consultations," said Li Yongquan, head of the research council of the Institute of European and Asian Social Development, Development Research Center of the State Council of China.

On June 15, 2001, in the Chinese city of Shanghai, the heads of state of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the People's Republic of China, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan adopted a Declaration on the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The document included the “Shanghai Spirit”, which is characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the desire for joint development.

"The Shanghai Spirit is highly consistent with the objectives of the United Nations Charter. It shares common roots with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, fully meeting the demands of the organization's member states for stability, development and unity. It has surpassed such outdated concepts as the Cold War mentality and clash of civilizations, and has been widely recognized by the international community," said Ambassador Fan Xianrong, in charge of the work of the Chinese National Coordinator of the SCO.

In the face of colossal changes unseen in a century, Xi Jinping, with his broad global outlook, is advancing the SCO's conceptual innovations in step with the times.

At the Qingdao Summit in 2018, Xi Jinping put forward the concepts of development, security, cooperation, civilization and global governance, summarizing the basic concepts of building a new type of international relations and entrusting the SCO with a new historical mission.

At the 20th meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council in 2020, Xi Jinping stressed that the SCO should carry forward the “Shanghai Spirit” for the sake of common health, common security, common development and the benefit of cultural and humanitarian exchanges, so as to find a way to build a community with a shared future for mankind through practical steps.

At the SCO summit in Astana in 2024, Xi Jinping called for unswerving adherence to the “Shanghai Spirit”, creating an atmosphere of unity and trust in our common home, making our common home peaceful and secure, prosperous and developed, and building a common home for the sake of good-neighborliness, friendship and justice.

According to Serik Korzhumbayev, editor-in-chief of the Delovoy Kazakhstan newspaper, Xi Jinping's five proposals for jointly building a more beautiful common home for the SCO have demonstrated China's unwavering desire to cooperate with other countries to create a better future and will vigorously strengthen solidarity and cooperation within the SCO.

Mountains and oceans do not separate like-minded people. The 2024 Astana summit saw the first “SCO Plus” meeting. During this summit, Belarus officially joined the SCO, becoming its 10th member state.

From the original 6 founding members to the “greater SCO family” that spans three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa and consists of 26 countries, including 10 member states, 2 observer states and 14 dialogue partners, the SCO has become the world’s largest comprehensive regional cooperation organization in terms of geographic coverage and population. Its influence, appeal and attractiveness in the international arena continue to grow.

THE PATH TO COMMON WIN AND PROSPERITY

At the SCO summit in Bishkek in 2019, Xi Jinping noted that China is ready to strengthen regional cooperation in modern agriculture by establishing an SCO demonstration base for exchanges and training in agricultural technologies in Shaanxi Province.

The base, located in Yangling, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, has trained more than 2,600 agricultural officials and technical experts from SCO countries at different times in the six years since its establishment.

Maksat Batyrbek from Kazakhstan spent many years studying in China, studying the effects of fertilizers on soil microorganisms, as well as the leaves and rhizomes of corn.

“The transformation and use of solonetzic and saline soils, urbanization, and the fight against poverty are issues that all our countries face,” M. Batyrbek believes, adding that cooperation within the SCO helps to resolve all these issues.

According to Sun Zhuangzhi, Director of the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, all SCO countries face pressing challenges in promoting economic growth and modernization. Cooperation within the SCO in eight priority areas of Xi Jinping's Global Development Initiative, namely poverty reduction, food security, public health, development finance, climate change response and green development, industrialization, digital economy and connectivity, has broad prospects.

Tianjin is the main hub of the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor and one of the intersections of the "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road". In 2024, the total import and export volume between the city and the SCO countries increased by 21.9 percent year-on-year.

According to statistics, in 2024, the trade volume between China and the SCO member states, observer states and dialogue partners reached a record high of US$890 billion.

As of the end of 2024, the volume of China's various investments in these countries exceeded US$140 billion.

According to former SCO Secretary General Vladimir Norov, Xi Jinping's initiative to jointly build the "Silk Road Economic Belt" is of historic significance. It has received broad support from the international community and plays an important role in advancing the globalization process in Eurasia.

In April 2025, the main line of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway, a landmark project of the three countries' cooperation in the joint construction of the Belt and Road, began in earnest. Once the entire line is completed, the railway will become a strategic corridor that will benefit the three countries and their peoples, and promote socio-economic development in the region.

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov noted that the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway is not just a transport corridor, it is an important strategic bridge that will connect the countries of the East and West. He expressed confidence that the project will be completed on time and with high quality and will become a symbol of friendship, cooperation and prosperity of the three countries.

In June 2025, the first stage of the first launch complex of the container hub project in the port of Aktau in Kazakhstan was officially put into operation, which is another landmark project in the joint high-quality construction of the “Belt and Road” by China and Kazakhstan. According to experts, it will give a new powerful impetus to the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor.

“The launch of the first launch complex of the container hub in the port of Aktau is an important stage in the development of the transport system of Kazakhstan and the Trans-Caspian route connecting China with Europe via Central Asia and the Caspian Sea,” noted Damir Kozhakhmetov, General Director of KTZ Express JSC.

“As the saying goes, common efforts lead to victory, and common intelligence leads to success,” Xi Jinping noted.

According to Fan Xianrong, Xi Jinping, always putting the people first, outlines the direction of pragmatic cooperation within the SCO framework with a focus on economic development and improving people's well-being. He promotes the alignment of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" with the development of the Eurasian Economic Union, proposed the establishment of an SCO demonstration base for exchanges and training in agricultural technology, a demonstration zone for regional trade and economic cooperation and other cooperation platforms, which provides residents of the region with real and tangible benefits from cooperation.

RESPECT FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY

In 2022, when Xi Jinping visited Uzbekistan, he presented a special gift to Uzbek President Sh. Mirziyoyev: a miniature of Khiva. Khiva is the first cultural heritage conservation project in Central Asia supported by China.

Uzbek historian Kamilzhan Khudaiberganov said that in terms of restoring historical and cultural sites in the ancient city of Khiva, China is currently the country that has provided the greatest assistance to Uzbekistan.

Xi Jinping noted that the SCO region is home to many ancient civilizations, where different ethnic groups, cultures and religions coexist and complement each other. We should cherish the region's rich cultural diversity as a precious asset, reject the idea of a clash of civilizations, and support openness, inclusiveness, communication among civilizations and learning from each other, thereby injecting lasting impetus into the lasting friendship, common development and progress of all peoples.

Lu Ban, an outstanding master and inventor of ancient China, and the project “Lu Ban Workshop” named after him have already become a famous brand in the field of vocational education. At present, China has established 10 “Lu Ban Workshops” in the SCO countries.

“The advanced concepts in the field of intelligent logistics are demonstrated here, and this place is equipped with advanced international training equipment. I can personally see the entire process of intelligent logistics,” said Asadbek Latipov, a student from Uzbekistan.

Civilization is enriched and flourishes only through communication and exchange. Xi Jinping noted that China is willing to provide a high-quality platform for inter-civilization dialogue among SCO member states, give full play to the role of non-governmental organizations such as the SCO China Committee on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, and continue to organize brand events such as the Forum on Traditional Medicine, the Forum of Friendship of Peoples, the Youth Camp and the Forum on Youth Development.

A year ago, Xi Jinping announced in Astana that China would invite 1,000 young people from SCO countries to China over the next five years as part of an exchange program.

Vice-Rector of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Zainidin Kurmanov noted that the Global Civilizations Initiative proposed by Xi Jinping, in line with the “Shanghai Spirit”, calls for respecting the diversity of world civilizations, promoting universal values, and strengthening international cultural exchanges and cooperation.

Former SCO Secretary General and former Tajik Ambassador to China Rashid Alimov believes that the SCO unites countries with different histories, cultures and languages. Its practice shows that intercivilizational dialogue is not only possible, but also very effective. It can strengthen trust, enhance cooperation and create conditions for peaceful development.

BRINGING MORE STABILITY AND POSITIVE ENERGY TO THE WORLD

Xi Jinping first attended the SCO summit in 2013, when terrorism, separatism, extremism, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime threatened security and stability in the region.

At this summit, he announced that the Chinese side would establish the “SCO/China/International Legal Training and Cooperation Center” at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law.

“One of the main tasks of this center is to promote practical cooperation between SCO member states in such areas as the fight against transnational crime, drug trafficking and extremism,” noted the rector of the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, director of the office of the Center for International Legal Training and Cooperation of the SCO /China/ Liu Xiaohong.

According to her, to date, more than 90 courses have been conducted in this center in online and offline formats, during which about 3,000 foreign specialists have been trained.

“The SCO cooperation not only contributes to maintaining security and stability in the region and uniting the countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, but will also stimulate further expansion of economic cooperation across the region for the benefit of the people,” said retired Supreme Court Judge Mushir Alam, who was trained at the aforementioned center.

The security of each country is true security. At the SCO summits, Xi Jinping called for expanded cooperation in non-traditional security areas, including digital data security, biosecurity and space security, and noted that it is necessary to improve the mechanism and means of security cooperation, accelerate the construction of a comprehensive center for combating security threats and challenges and its subordinate agencies, establish a drug control center, strengthen intelligence sharing and conduct joint operations.

“The practical cooperation of the SCO in the field of security directly affects the sense of security of citizens and will allow the organization to strengthen its role as a reliable element of the system of regional stability and peace,” noted Marina Dmitrieva, Deputy Director of the Eastern Institute for Science at the Far Eastern Federal University.

The SCO actively advocates for the political settlement of pressing international and regional issues, including support for the efforts of the international community to achieve peace and development in Afghanistan, support for a comprehensive and fair settlement of the Palestinian issue based on the principle of “two states for two peoples”, firm support for the multilateral trading system and strong condemnation of the abuse of military force.

Focusing on issues such as protecting the gains of victory in World War II and maintaining the key status of the UN, SCO member states will also present a united front at the Tianjin summit.

“The SCO actively and loudly spreads its voice on major international and regional issues, protecting the interests of countries in the Global South, and thereby making efforts to advance global governance reform in a more just and rational direction,” Sun Zhuangzhi said.

"The SCO stands on the right side of history, adheres to justice and is of great significance to the world," Xi Jinping said, stressing that in the current circumstances when the world is undergoing changes and upheavals, the SCO should remain focused and confident, act effectively and play a more active role to bring more stability and positive energy to the world.

Irina Akulovich, Director General of the Belarusian Telegraph Agency, emphasized that Xi Jinping plays an important role in promoting the “Shanghai Spirit,” as he promotes the construction of a more just and multipolar world by putting forward a number of initiatives within the SCO.

“Xi Jinping guided the SCO to actively participate in improving global governance, contributed the ‘voice of the SCO’ to the implementation of genuine multilateralism and the protection of equality and justice in international relations, proposed ‘SCO options’ to facilitate the settlement of pressing issues on the regional agenda, and presented ‘SCO actions’ to form a new type of international relations and a community with a common future for mankind, which was highly praised by the SCO member states and the international community,” Fan Xianrong noted.

"China stands ready to seize the opportunity of the Tianjin summit to work together with all parties to bring the SCO to a new stage of high-quality development characterized by greater solidarity, closer cooperation, more dynamic vitality and higher efficiency," he said. -0-

Astana, August 29 /Xinhua/ — The Monetary Policy Committee of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan has decided to keep the base rate at 16.5 percent per annum with a corridor of 1/- 1 percentage point. This was reported on Friday by the Kazinform agency with reference to the National Bank.

The National Bank noted that the decision was based on the results of the updated forecast round. In July, annual inflation was 11.8 percent, prices for food and non-food products continued to rise, while the contribution of the services sector began to decline.

Inflation expectations of the population rose to 14.2 percent in July. External factors continue to put pressure on prices: global food prices are rising, inflation in neighboring countries remains high.

According to the National Bank's forecasts, inflation in 2025 is expected to be within 11-12.5 percent, in 2026 – 9.5-11.5 percent. Economic growth in 2025 is projected at 5.5-6.5 percent, which is facilitated by investment activity and stable consumer demand.

From September 2025, new conditions for minimum reserve requirements and additional measures aimed at cooling the retail lending market will be introduced. The National Bank emphasized that if inflation does not slow down, monetary conditions may be tightened. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said Friday that China is willing to work with the United States to find the right path for coexistence between the two major powers in the new era.

Speaking at a press conference, the vice-minister of China's foreign policy department stressed that China is ready to interact with the United States of America on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation, but at the same time firmly defending its national sovereignty, security and development interests.

He also stressed that attempts to put pressure on China will not succeed, and any efforts aimed at curbing China's development or hindering the revival of the Chinese nation are doomed to failure.

“We are ready to move towards the American side, implement the important consensus reached by the heads of the two states, maintain contacts, manage differences, expand cooperation and continue to search for the right paths of coexistence in the new era,” he summed up. -0-

Deadline for submission of abstracts for presentation at IAEA International Conference on Safe and Secure Transport of Nuclear and Radioactive Material extended until September 30, 2025.

The IAEA estimates that 20 million shipments of radioactive material are transported each year. These materials are transported by road, rail, sea, air and inland waterway within countries and abroad for applications in areas such as medicine and human health, agriculture, nuclear energy and advanced scientific research.

The conference, to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 23 to 27 March 2026, will address issues such as the legislative and regulatory framework for the transport of nuclear and other radioactive material, the incorporation of nuclear safety and security requirements into design, and the maintenance of nuclear safety and security during transport operations. The conference will continue the work started at previous events in 2011 and 2021.

“For decades, the IAEA safety standards have served as the foundation for the safe transport of radioactive material. With rapid advances in nuclear and transport technologies, the global situation is changing rapidly. This conference aims to promote innovation, exchange of experience and strengthening of international standards,” said Shazia Fayyaz, Scientific Secretary of the conference and Head of the Transport Safety Group in the IAEA’s Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety.

“During transport, nuclear and radioactive material may be exposed to a range of risks and threats specific to the mode of transport,” says Robert Officer, also the Scientific Secretary of the conference and Head of the Transport Security Group in the IAEA’s Division of Nuclear Security. “The conference will further raise awareness by sharing experiences in strengthening nuclear security and safety capabilities, including on topics such as legal and policy frameworks, as well as technological and commercial trends in protection at all stages of transport.”

On the eve of the new academic year, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University celebrated an important event again— the beginning of the school journey of the children of its employees. 88 boys and girls, who will go to first grade for the first time in 2025, received gift school sets.

A real holiday of knowledge was organized in the research building of Technopolis Polytech. Children sang songs from their favorite cartoons and danced to cheerful melodies. Of course, conversations quickly began and new friends were made. "How old are you?" one girl asked. "I'm seven, I'm already in first grade," another proudly answered. And soon the children were surprised to find out that each of them was starting their own exciting journey into the world of knowledge.

We are very glad that today you came to visit your moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas at work. We hope that you will visit the Polytechnic more and more often, and then enroll in our university. You have a wonderful time ahead of you. Fun moments, new friends and good people await you. I wish you to go through this path with interest and responsibility, and also to gain a lot of knowledge. And I would like to wish strength and patience to parents, grandmas and grandpas, – Vice-Rector for Information, Youth Policy and Security Maxim Pasholikov greeted the young guests.

The characters of the fairy tale "The Golden Key" – Buratino, Malvina, Harlequin, Basilio the cat and Alice the fox – turned the science building into a magical land of adventures, organizing interactive games, tricks, quizzes and mini-experiments for the first-graders. The children watched in fascination as clouds of multi-colored soap bubbles floated in the air.

Of course, there were gifts. The children received capacious bags with a set of stationery, balloons and bracelets with the Polytechnic symbols. In the finale, Harlequin invited the first-graders on an exciting journey to the second floor, where ice cream, juices and water were waiting for them in the cafe.

Lyudmila Chishko came to the celebration with her two granddaughters – Valeria, who is going to first grade this year, and Polina, who will become a first grader in three years.

We really hope that both granddaughters will one day study at this glorious university. My son Sergey Chishko is a research engineer at the Engineering Center "Computer Engineering Center". My daughter-in-law is also a graduate of the Polytechnic University. When they got married nine years ago, just unveiled a monument to Saints Peter and Fevronia on the university grounds. They were photographed on their wedding day, and they entered the history of the Polytechnic University, said Lyudmila Gennadyevna.

When my son saw a backpack with the Polytechnic logo, he immediately said: "Now I am also a Polytechnician." It is incredible to feel that your child is already a part of something big, – shared the director of the Center for Additional Professional Programs of the Civil Engineering Institute Ksenia Strelets.

The initiator of the holiday for first-graders was the SPbPU Human Resources Directorate.

We really wanted the children of our polytechnics to remember the beginning of their studies with pleasant emotions. We are happy to give them the opportunity to start their school journey with unforgettable impressions and gifts, to expand their understanding of the place where their parents work. On my own behalf, I can say that I was happy to see such bright smiles and sincere interest in our little guests. We are looking forward to the next meetings and new joint adventures, – noted the head of the HR Directorate Maria Pakhomova.

Each branded set included a bag for changing shoes, a white T-shirt, a pencil case, pens, an eraser, a map case, a ruler, markers, an album, notebooks, a bottle for drinking, and reflectors. The gift became not only help for the beginning of the school year, but also a symbol of attention from the native university of the father and mother, as well as a reminder that children and adults are part of a large and friendly polytechnic family.

JUBA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have received US$65 million to support efforts to build the resilience of vulnerable communities in South Sudan, the two organizations said in a joint statement released in the South Sudanese capital Juba on Thursday.

The statement said that under the second phase of the joint resilience project in South Sudan, funding will be directed to assist almost one million people in urban and peri-urban areas of Juba, Torit, Yambio and Aweil.

UNICEF Representative in South Sudan Noala Skinner said the support would have a profound impact on the country, where an estimated 9.3 million people (about 70 percent of the population) are in need of humanitarian assistance.

“This will enable UNICEF to scale up critical interventions from treating acute malnutrition and providing access to clean water to providing essential health and education services and protecting children,” said Skinner.

WFP Acting Country Director for South Sudan Adam Effendi said the support was not just aid, but an investment in long-term resilience, food security and people's dignity. –0–
