BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — China held a large-scale military parade in central Beijing on Wednesday to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, declaring the country's commitment to peaceful development in a world still in turbulence and uncertainty.

Tiananmen Square was filled with tall installations in the shape of the Great Wall of China, symbolizing the courage and solidarity of the Chinese people in resisting external aggression.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered an important speech and toured the parade vehicles.

The admission campaign is a small life, full of expectations, hopes and important decisions. For thousands of applicants, the summer of 2025 was marked by the choice of a future profession, and for the Polytechnic University – in an effort to make this process as comfortable and understandable as possible. And now all the decisions have been made, the enrollment orders have been signed. A new, already student life is ahead.

The vast majority of documents (99%) were submitted by applicants remotely through the State Services portal, which allowed students from all corners of Russia to become part of the large Polytechnic family without any hassle. Applicants to master's and postgraduate programs could also submit an application through the Unified Portal.

But the admissions committee was also happy to meet in person. A modern multifunctional space was organized in the reading room of the main academic building, where it was possible to submit documents with the help of employees, conclude an agreement and submit consent for enrollment. "2025 has become a time of significant changes for the Polytechnic Admissions Committee," noted Varvara Sotova, Director of the Center for Formation of the Contingent of Students. The admission campaign for the Master's degree also showed impressive results. 23,827 applications were submitted for 2,340 budget places, and 6,789 for fee-paying places.

This year, the admissions committee placed special emphasis on the portfolio competition, following which 551 people received a place at the university. Also enrolled were 14 winners of the "I am a professional" Olympiad and 2 winners of the All-Russian engineering competition.

SPbPU professor wins postgraduate scholarship in neuroscience

Head of the Department of Higher Mathematics at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Ilya Sysoev, received a grant from the Idea Scientific Center to open a postgraduate position in neuroscience, becoming winner of the 2025 competition.

The competition was held for the fifth time (in 2024, the project of Marina Sysoeva, professor of the Physics Department at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics, won).

This year, 15 projects out of 37 applications received support based on the results of the competition. The research topic proposed by I. V. Sysoev "Modeling of short-term memory processes as dynamic modes in hippocampal neuron networks" involves an interdisciplinary approach that combines mathematical modeling, methods of nonlinear dynamics, processing of electrophysiological signals and computational methods. In order to conduct research in the field of fundamental neurosciences, the research laboratory "Fundamental cognitive research" was created at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of SPbPU in 2025, where two projects supported by grants from the Russian Science Foundation are already being carried out. The grant from the scientific center "Idea" is intended to pay a postgraduate student an additional stipend of 80 thousand rubles per month for the entire period of study.

September 3 – Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism

September 3 is the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism in Russia. Today we remember the victims of terrorist attacks and pay tribute to law enforcement officers who died in the fight against terrorists.

Solidarity Day is directly connected with the tragic events in Beslan on September 1-3, 2004. Then, during a ceremonial assembly at School No. 1, a group of terrorists took more than 1,100 children, their parents and teachers hostage. The school was mined, and the hostages were kept in the gym in the harshest conditions. The entire country watched with horror the dramatic events unfolding in the small Beslan school.

On the third day, a series of explosions occurred in the building and an assault began. Most of the hostages were freed. 333 people died, including 186 children.

This pain will never go away from my heart.

On September 3, 2005, the Tree of Sorrow monument was unveiled at the City of Angels Memorial Cemetery, where the victims of the terrorist attack are buried. The school gymnasium remained a makeshift memorial for a long time, where relatives and friends of the victims and caring people would come. A wooden Orthodox cross was installed in the middle of the hall, and the walls were covered with photographs of the victims. Common grief unites, and among the inscriptions on the walls one can see the words “Nord-Ost is with you”. Flowers and children’s toys lay near the cross and along the walls of the hall, and there were open bottles of water, symbolizing the suffering of the hostages from thirst. “We beg you, give us water,” reads the inscription on the memorial drinking fountain installed in the City of Angels.

Following these terrible events, security measures were strengthened in all schools across the country: barriers were built, panic buttons were installed, and contracts with security companies were concluded. Security is also monitored in higher education institutions. Anti-terrorist training is regularly held at the Polytechnic University, and video surveillance is installed.
