BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) — Alashankou City, located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) on the border of China and Kazakhstan, has been actively leveraging its unique geographical advantages to promote the integrated development of culture and tourism, according to an article posted on the official website of the Alashankou City Hall.

As the hub of China's opening up to the West, Alashankou serves as an important channel for the development of China's trade and economic ties with Central Asia and even Europe. XUAR and Alashankou in particular are rich in tourism resources. All these factors have laid a solid foundation for the development of cultural tourism in Alashankou.

In recent years, Alashankou, taking advantage of the historical opportunities created by the Belt and Road Initiative, has been actively developing border and cross-border tourism and has taken a series of policies to promote the prosperity of local cultural tourism.

Alashankou City pays special attention to the integration of tourism resources of China and Kazakhstan and the establishment of a cross-border tourism service system. In accordance with the needs of tourists, the city government has launched specific cross-border routes such as trade and shopping routes and scenic tour routes in cooperation with the tourism department of Kazakhstan. At the same time, it has taken a leading role in formulating unified pricing standards for services to promote the healthy development of the tourism market, promoting cooperation between local enterprises and tourism companies in Kazakhstan to jointly develop cross-border tourism routes and form a resource sharing mechanism.

"The two-day tour of Lake Alakol that we launched is a completely new and popular tourist route. We will take tourists to Lake Alakol and introduce them to local exotic customs. In the future, we plan to launch a 5-day tour and a 7-day tour of Lake Alakol, and we also intend to switch to longer routes to Almaty," the branch of Xinjiang Jinqiao International Travel Agency in Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, where the city of Alashankou is located, reported.

The implementation of the mutual visa exemption policy between China and Kazakhstan in 2023 has opened up great opportunities for the development of the tourism industry in Alashankou. This city, which used to be just a border crossing, is now turning into an important tourist destination.

As of August 27 this year, Alashankou City had received a total of over 1.5 million tourists, with tourism revenue reaching 851 million yuan (about 120 million US dollars), up 50 percent and 49.33 percent year-on-year, respectively. In particular, 82,000 inbound and outbound trips were recorded here, with an increase of 0.98 percent year-on-year.

In order to make tourists enjoy their travels more, Alashankou City has been actively improving its tourism infrastructure. From the second half of 2023 to the beginning of 2025, the number of hotels in this city increased from 11 to 25, the number of beds increased from 987 to more than 2,650, and the number of restaurants increased by 80 establishments.

"During the tourist season last year, there was a great demand for hotel services, and it was often difficult to book a hotel in Alashankou. Since hotels in the city were unable to fully meet the existing needs, the Xiyu International Hotel in Alashankou was built and put into operation this year," the hotel said. "The new hotel has more than 50 rooms, which effectively supplemented the local hotel resources," a representative of the Xiyu Hotel added.

This year, Alashankou City continues to work hard to improve its cultural and tourism infrastructure. In particular, on May 1, a renovated tourist service center was put into operation, which provides better services. In June, the Alashankou swimming pool was restored, which expanded the opportunities for recreation and entertainment for tourists. Projects such as the construction of a fitness center and the modernization of border cultural tourism facilities are being systematically implemented.

Alashankou is currently in talks with Kazakhstan to promote cross-border self-driving tours, a one-day tour of Dostyk and other routes to give tourists a deeper insight into Central Asian customs. The city is also pushing ahead with an application to establish a national pilot zone for cross-border tourism to deepen tourism cooperation with Central Asian countries. -0-

The Russian Cultural Center in Beijing hosted a hugely successful evening of Russian ballet, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Leading artists of the Mikhailovsky Theater from St. Petersburg took part in the event: prima ballerina, Honored Artist of Russia Irina Perren and first soloist, Honored Artist of St. Petersburg Marat Shemiunov.

The artists presented a rich program that demonstrated the full range of their virtuoso skills and artistry. The audience witnessed a unique journey through different eras and styles of world ballet.

The evening began with the lyrical and cosmic “Starry Sky” performed by Irina Perren.

The audience saw Maurice Ravel's passionate "Bolero", staged based on the choreography of Bronislava Nijinska.

One of the highlights of the evening was the immortal miniature “The Dying Swan” to the music of Camille Saint-Saëns, where Irina Perrin conveyed all the depth and tragedy of the image.

The final chord of the program was a scene from the ballet “The Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky, choreographed by Mikhail Fokin – bright, fiery and full of the magic of a Russian fairy tale.

A special place in the program was given to the story of the creative path and artistic legacy of Maya Plisetskaya, one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century, whose art had a huge influence on the development of world ballet.

The performance of the Mikhailovsky Theatre stars was met with thunderous applause from the Beijing audience, confirming that high art knows no boundaries and speaks a language that is understandable to the heart without translation.

On September 2, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun announced that in order to further facilitate travel between the countries, China has decided to expand the list of countries whose citizens enjoy a visa-free regime. From September 15, 2025 to September 14, 2026, a trial visa-free policy will be in effect for Russian citizens holding ordinary passports. Russian citizens with ordinary passports can enter China without a visa for the purposes of business, tourism, visiting friends and relatives, exchanging visits, and transit for a period of no more than 30 days.

Currently, there is a tourism boom between China and Russia, and citizens of both countries are making active efforts to achieve this. According to the Chinese Embassy in Russia, in 2024, mainland Chinese residents made 1.0394 million tourist trips to Russia as their first destination, an increase of 209.3% over the previous year. In 2024, mainland China received 1.5035 million Russian tourists, an increase of 115.1% over the previous year. As Rossiyskaya Gazeta noted in an article on September 2, Russian tourists' interest in traveling to China is growing, and this policy is likely to lead to a significant increase in the number of tourists visiting China. Vice President of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia Muradyan said that the positive results of the new policy will "far exceed expectations." Currently, the number of Russian citizens visiting China for tourism and business purposes is growing rapidly, and this decision is expected to increase the flow of tourists to China by 30-40%.

As RIA Novosti reports, the Russian Union of Travel Industry on September 2 said that this move by China is a “very pleasant surprise” that will further change the attitude of Russian tourists to travel to China. According to information, this decision by China could significantly increase demand for flights from Russia to China. Currently, airlines from both countries operate about 230 flights per week. The most popular destinations for Russian tourists are Sanya, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other cities.

China's "circle of friends of visa-free travel" is constantly expanding. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said on August 29 that China has unilaterally abolished visas or introduced full mutual visa-free travel for 75 countries, and opened visa-free transit for 55 countries, and "travel to China" continues to be in great demand.

On September 2, the China-SCO Green Industry Cooperation Platform, the Digital Economy Cooperation Platform and the Vocational Education Cooperation Center were established in Tianjin, opening a new chapter of international cooperation in the city's history.

On September 1, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) 2025 Summit concluded in Tianjin. One of the eight major achievements of the summit was the establishment of six platforms for practical cooperation, including three China-SCO cooperation platforms in energy, green industry and digital economy, as well as three cooperation centers in scientific and technological innovation, higher education and vocational education. Three of them are located in Tianjin.

The green industry cooperation platform includes a green industry cooperation union, a green industry cooperation promotion center, and other organizations that promote practical cooperation in this area. A green industry cooperation zone is being built on the basis of the Ziya Economic and Technological Development Zone in Tianjin.

The digital economy cooperation platform will promote better matching of supply and demand and deepen cooperation within the ecosystem, taking into account the resource potential, industrial advantages and cooperation needs of the SCO member states, and invite various stakeholders to participate in the construction of the platform, actively promoting the “hard connection” of digital infrastructure, “soft connection” of data rules and standards, and “heart connection” of digital economy talents among the SCO member states.

The Secretariat of the Vocational Education Cooperation Center is located in Tianjin Normal University of Technology and Education, which is responsible for guiding specific construction tasks and ensuring daily work.

The two platforms and one center established in Tianjin have specific operational structures, including decision-making organs such as the executive committee, coordination and planning organs such as the secretariat, and facilitation centers to promote practical cooperation. These structures are provided with physical premises and staffed with dedicated personnel.
