Heirs to Traditions: Polytechnicians Improve the Temple Grounds in Kholomki

Teachers and students of the Higher School of Design and Architecture of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University's Civil Engineering Institute took part in a charity project to improve the territory of the educational and historical reserve "Prince A. G. Gagarin's Estate "Kholomki"" in the Pskov Region. The ICI team carried out landscaping work on the territory of the Ascension Church in the village of Belskoye Ustye, making their contribution to preserving the cultural heritage of the region.

The following took part in the project from the Civil Engineering Institute: Director of the Higher School of Design and Architecture Margarita Perkova, teachers and staff of the Higher School of Design and Architecture ISI – Olga Vul, Elena Ladik, Mekhti Mezentsev, Andrey Zaitsev, as well as undergraduate students Angelina Sladkevich, Valeria Shirkhanova and Fyodor Vasiliev.

During the trip, the students began the first stage of landscaping – they carefully prepared the flowerbeds at the main entrance to the church, planted the first flowers and plants, creating the basis for the future beautiful design of the territory. Decorative compositions of stones were installed, various varieties of hydrangeas, junipers, roses, hostas, decorative wormwood, thyme and even remontant strawberries with bright red flowers were planted. The project for the improvement of the church territory was developed by graduate students Vera Rogaleva and Valeria Solodovnikova under the supervision of Margarita Perkova as part of the summer practice.

The Kholomki estate, located 15 kilometers from the city of Porkhov in the Pskov region, was founded in the early 20th century by Prince Andrei Grigorievich Gagarin, an outstanding scientist and the first rector of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The main house of the estate was built according to the design of the famous architect Ivan Aleksandrovich Fomin in the neoclassical style. This mansion became a symbol of the "golden age" of Russian estates.

In 1914, during the First World War, a hospital for soldiers of the Siberian regiment was set up here. In 1918, the estate was transformed into the People's House named after V. I. Lenin, where theme nights and performances were held, gathering residents of the entire Porkhov district. Later, a House of Creativity was created in the estate, which became a place of attraction for Petrograd writers and artists. In the period from 1921 to 1922, famous writers and artists lived and worked here: M. V. Dobuzhinsky, M. M. Zoshchenko, E. I. Zamyatin, S. F. Khodasevich, K. I. Chukovsky, O. E. Mandelstam. After that, a sanatorium for pulmonary patients was opened in the estate. During the Great Patriotic War, the estate in Kholomki was located on captured territory and housed the headquarters of German pilots. By the middle of the 20th century, the estate had fallen into disrepair.

In 2000, the estate was transferred to the Polytechnic University for permanent ownership and received the status of a structural subdivision. Today, it is a unique educational and historical reserve that maintains a connection between the past and the present. Not far from the estate is the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, built in 1796 by Colonel Artemon Kozhin on his estate. Decades later, in the early 1860s, his son Pyotr Kozhin decided to build a new church in the style of early classicism with baroque elements according to the design of the St. Petersburg architect Shestakov.

Over its long history, the church has witnessed many significant events. In 1920, Prince A. G. Gagarin was buried here. Unfortunately, in the 1960s, the church was closed due to its emergency condition. Only in 2014 did large-scale restoration work begin.

The Polytechnic University is the leading engineering university in the country, one of the few that trains qualified personnel in the field of state regulation of forensic activities and the production of technological, highly qualified examinations. BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — The 2025 Golden Square International Traditional Culture Festival was held from Sept. 9 to 14 in Beidaihe, a coastal district of Qinhuangdao City, north China's Hebei Province. The large-scale event brought together more than 2,000 artists from China and Russia.

China's economy remains stable in August

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — China's economy maintained solid momentum in August despite an uncertain external environment, with high-quality development making steady progress, official data showed Monday.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), China's economy saw steady growth in January-August, with key indicators including output, retail sales and employment generally in line with those of the first seven months of 2025.

Domestic demand continued to expand, the GSU noted. In the first eight months of 2025, retail sales of consumer goods grew by 4.6 percent year-on-year, while consumption of services in areas such as tourism and live performances was particularly active. Over the period, retail sales of services grew by 5.1 percent, which was higher than the growth in sales of consumer goods.

In the industrial sector, the gross added value of large industrial enterprises increased by 5.2 percent year-on-year in August. The manufacturing industry showed good results with an increase in added value of 5.7 percent.

NSU official Fu Linghui noted that due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the acceleration of digitalization, the relevant industries have seen relatively rapid growth.

Thus, in August, gross value added in the manufacturing sector of equipment for smart vehicles, electronic components and equipment, and integrated circuits increased by 17.7 percent, 13.1 percent, and 23.5 percent year-on-year, respectively.

In terms of employment, the average unemployment rate in urban areas surveyed in China was 5.3 percent in August, up 0.1 percent from July.

According to Fu Linghui, the slight increase was due to the college graduation season, and last month's figure remained at the level recorded in August last year. Employment among key population groups also remained generally stable.

Despite a sluggish global economy and an uncertain external environment, China's merchandise trade has shown resilience. In August, total foreign trade grew 3.5 percent year-on-year, marking the third consecutive month of growth in both exports and imports.

Among other positive developments, the producer price index (PPI), a measure of the change in wholesale producer prices of goods, broke its downward trend and remained unchanged in August on a monthly basis after falling 0.2 percent in July. Prices for coal mining and ferrous metal processing rose 2.8 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively.

Fu Linghui said that regulating disorderly competition between enterprises and managing capacity in key industries has improved the balance between supply and demand, promoting positive changes in prices.

He also warned of ongoing challenges, including a challenging external environment with multiple uncertainties, excess supply over demand in the domestic market and difficulties faced by some companies.

However, he said, the fundamental factors underlying China's long-term economic growth remain unchanged.

According to Fu Linghui, thanks to the effectiveness of macro policies, further deepening of reform and opening up, and promoting domestic and international dual circulation of the economy, the economy is in a good position for sustainable and positive development.

He added that through the implementation of special measures to stimulate consumption, the optimization of exchange programs for old consumer goods for new ones, and the introduction of livelihood policies, including child care subsidies and free pre-school education, the population's consumption capacity and readiness are expected to be strengthened.

"The upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays will further stimulate holiday spending, and consumption is expected to continue to grow in both scale and quality," he said.

Regarding the next stage, Fu Linghui expressed confidence that the implementation of a more proactive fiscal policy and moderately loose monetary policy will enhance policy effectiveness and provide strong support for sustainable economic growth. -0-

The Otkrytie Festival launched the creative life of Polytechnic first-year students

On September 13, the creativity festival "Otkrytie" was held in the student campus on Lesnaya. The event, organized by the administration of the Student Club of the Directorate of Cultural Programs and Youth Creativity, became a pass to the future for the most active first-year students.

The festival featured a full range of cultural and leisure activities: two theaters, two choirs, two vocal studios, a pop-symphony orchestra, a dance studio, KVN and other groups. The studios and associations of the Student Club surprised everyone with so many things! Guests learned to draw music, got acquainted with rare photographic equipment, participated in a show, launched a drum from the musical show "Don't Sleep!" and received predictions for the academic year. The Polytechnic Student Theater held express trainings, and the People's University Theater "Glagol" invited behind the scenes. At all stations, students earned game currency, which could be exchanged for memorable gifts in the Student Club souvenir shop or saved for the big auction.

At the Otkrytie festival, we, together with the Ingenium orchestra, played games with guests and looked for talented polytechnic students — future members of our orchestra. The student club is a place to meet new friends and realize your talents, — shared 2nd-year student of the Institute of Biological Sciences and Biology Savva Ivanov.

The creative space of the festival was an interactive map of the annual events of the Student Club: for a couple of minutes, the Polytechnicians found themselves in the atmosphere of "ArtCamp" – a traditional trip for first-year students, the intellectual and entertaining game "FastBrain", Maslenitsa and the legendary project "Dances. Polytechnic". The Ecological Community "Regrin" and the United Student Council of Dormitories also joined the festival.

The atmosphere of the festival made a huge impression! A big gala concert prepared by the studios, many interactive activities and absolutely different decorations. It was especially nice to see how many kids are interested in creativity and immediately sign up for the groups they liked! – shared first-year student of the IPMET Maria Akimenko.

The center of attraction was the stage, where for two hours the participants of the Youth Choir "Polyhymnia", vocal studio "Polivoks", Chamber Choir, dance studio PolyDance, as well as finalists and participants of the project "Star of Polytech", artists of the musical show "Don't Sleep!" and beatbox master Ekaterina Pautova performed. The finale of the evening was the viewing of a cartoon in the open air.
