The main news of the day at the UN and around the world: another wave of escalating violence in Sudan, a statement by the UN Secretary-General on the situation around UNRWA, an appeal by Volker Türk to the Israeli authorities, and Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Escalating violence in Sudan

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed concern about the impact of escalating violence on Sudan's civilian population, particularly in the Kordofan region and North Darfur state. In South Kordofan state, the humanitarian situation in the besieged towns of Dilling and Kadugli continues to deteriorate: both towns are isolated, supplies are rapidly depleting, and prices for food and other essential goods are skyrocketing. Conflict and instability are also leading to mass displacement.

Statement by the UN Secretary-General on the situation surrounding UNRWA

The UN Secretary-General condemned the Israeli Knesset's adoption of amendments to the law on the cessation of the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). These amendments are aimed at further restricting the agency's ability to operate and fulfill its mandate, he noted. Antonio GuterresMoreover, according to the Secretary-General, they contradict UNRWA's international legal status and must be immediately revoked. The UN chief reiterated his firm support for UNRWA and reminded Israel of its obligations under the UN Charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.

Volker Türk's appeal to the Israeli authorities

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on the Israeli authorities abandon plans to pass legislation that would apply the death penalty exclusively to Palestinians—both in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and in Israel. According to Volker Türk, such proposals violate international law on a number of levels. Amendments submitted to the Israeli Knesset would lower the threshold for applying the death penalty. They raise serious concerns among human rights activists due to the discrimination against Palestinians and the violation of their due process rights, as well as other violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Every two minutes, a woman dies from cervical cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). January – Cervical Cancer Awareness MonthWHO experts emphasize that the disease is completely eradicated. This requires that 90 percent of girls be vaccinated, 70 percent of women be screened, and most patients receive necessary treatment. According to the WHO, cervical cancer is most common among women without access to healthcare, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. The highest incidence and mortality rates are found in sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) — U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla said on Friday its global shipments fell about 8.6 percent year-on-year in 2025, losing ground to Chinese automaker BYD in annual sales for the first time.

Tesla is projected to produce 1.655 million electric vehicles and deliver 1.636 million in 2025, down from 1.773 million produced and 1.789 million delivered in 2024, according to the company.

The biggest impact on sales was the repeal in September 2025 of tax credits that encouraged American consumers to buy electric vehicles.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, Tesla produced 434,358 vehicles and delivered 418,227, down from 459,445 produced and 495,570 sold in the same period a year earlier. Deliveries in the fourth quarter fell by approximately 16 percent year-over-year.

BYD said Thursday that its global electric vehicle sales will reach 2.257 million units in 2025, up 27.86 percent from a year earlier, with a growing share of sales coming from markets outside China, including Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Tesla currently remains the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the United States, accounting for approximately 45% of the domestic EV market. However, the company's declining sales volume points to a broader slowdown in the American EV market.

According to statistics from automotive research firm Cox Automotive, sales of electric vehicles of all brands in the US fell by more than 40 percent year-on-year in November 2025.

Industry analysts expect electric vehicle sales in the U.S. to remain subdued through 2026. –0–

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expresses concern about the impact of the escalating violence on the civilian population, particularly in the Kordofan region and North Darfur state.

In South Kordofan State, the humanitarian situation in the besieged towns of Dilling and Kadugli continues to deteriorate: both towns are isolated, supplies are rapidly depleting, and prices for food and other essential goods are skyrocketing.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that civilians who have managed to flee cities are arriving in several other locations in the Kordofan region and White Nile State. The IOM also confirms that displacement continues in North Kordofan State.

Conflict and instability are also driving people out of North Darfur, including across the border into Chad.

Earlier this week, Sudanese authorities confirmed that they had extended permission to use the Adre border crossing for the delivery of humanitarian supplies until the end of March.

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher welcomed the news, reiterating his gratitude to the Sudanese and Chadian authorities. He emphasized that ensuring continued border access is crucial to saving lives.

Aden, Yemen, January 2 (Xinhua) — Yemen's Southern Transitional Council (STC) leader Aidarus al-Zubaidi on Friday announced the start of a two-year transitional period during which the council will administer the southern regions of the country, after which a referendum on the independence of southern Yemen will be held.

In a televised address broadcast on the STC-affiliated AIC channel, Aidarus al-Zubeidi said the decision was based on what he called a popular mandate and recent security and administrative developments in the region.

“The two-year transition period will end with the adoption of a constitutional declaration on the restoration of the independence of the state of South Yemen,” Aidarus al-Zubeidi clarified, adding that this document should come into force on January 2, 2028.

According to him, after the transitional phase, a popular referendum on self-determination will be held, which will be conducted in accordance with internationally recognized norms and using peaceful and transparent mechanisms.

Aidarus al-Zubeidi also indicated that the constitutional declaration, scheduled for 2028, could come into effect earlier if "the STC's calls go unheeded, or if the people, territory, or forces of South Yemen are subjected to military aggression." However, he noted that "all options remain on the table."

Yemen's Saudi-backed government has not yet commented on the STC's statement.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) — Every year on New Year's Eve, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivers his New Year's greetings to the Chinese people from his office, which features the Great Wall of China, a symbol of the Chinese nation's resilience and heritage, in the background.

This time was no exception. On Wednesday evening, Xi Jinping sat at his desk with a warm smile to reflect on the remarkable achievements of China and its people in 2025 and share his expectations for the new year.

At the beginning of 2026, Xi Jinping's inspirational address invites us to take a closer look at his bold vision for China's future path and the country's role on the global stage.

A NEW STAGE OF CHINESE MODERNIZATION

The year 2025 marks the completion of China's 14th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development. "Despite difficulties and challenges, all assigned tasks have been accomplished with excellence, and the country is confidently advancing along the path of Chinese modernization," Xi Jinping said.

As 2026 marks the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan, Xi Jinping called for promoting high-quality development, further deepening reform and opening up, ensuring prosperity for all, and writing a new chapter in the history of China's economic and social miracles.

At the core of Xi Jinping's vision is high-quality development, with an emphasis on transforming China's economy into an innovation hub.

Xi Jinping has always placed great importance on the development of high technology in China. Last April, during an inspection tour of Shanghai, he visited a model innovation center housing over 100 companies engaged in advanced technologies.

During his visit, Xi Jinping personally inspected some of the latest AI-based products and even tried on a pair of smart glasses. He also noted that China has abundant information resources, a fully-fledged industrial system, and a vast market with promising prospects for the development of AI.

The Chinese leader also emphasizes the importance of international technological cooperation. Last November, at the APEC Leaders' Meeting in the Republic of Korea, Xi Jinping advocated the creation of a World Organization for Artificial Intelligence Cooperation to promote global cooperation and governance in AI. He believed that the rapid development of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence is opening new horizons for humanity.

As China advances its modernization efforts, green development remains a focus. "Emerald waters and green mountains" have become characteristic features of the country's landscape, Xi Jinping noted in his New Year address. He has consistently upheld and promoted this vision for decades.

This principle was further reinforced in Xi Jinping's video address to the 2025 UN Climate Action Summit, where he announced China's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the period up to 2035. Among a series of commitments, he pledged that by 2035, China would reduce net economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 7-10 percent below peak levels, or even more.

For Singaporean political commentator Ang Teck Sin, China's modernization has broader global significance. "China has demonstrated the ability to achieve national development while contributing to shared global prosperity," he said.

"EMBRACING THE PEACE"

As global instability intensified last year, the world's attention was focused on a historic event. On September 1, during the Tianjin Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Xi Jinping launched the Global Governance Initiative.

“Following the Three Global Initiatives, I launched the Global Governance Initiative, which aims to build a more equitable and rational system of global governance,” Xi Jinping said in his New Year’s address, which was broadcast in several languages for a global audience.

The year 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN. Ahead of the SCO summit, Xi Jinping met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and reaffirmed China's commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

The world is undergoing profound changes. Multipolarity is gaining momentum, economic globalization is facing increasing headwinds, and calls for the democratization of international relations are growing. At the same time, Cold War mentalities, hegemonism, and protectionism continue to cast a long shadow.

"The Global Governance Initiative marks an unprecedented step toward building an alternative, multipolar, and more equitable world order," commented American economist Jeffrey Sachs.

In his New Year's address on Wednesday, Xi Jinping said China "embraces the world with an open heart."

The Chinese President's words were backed by a year of active diplomacy. Throughout 2025, the Chinese leader made extensive outreach to the world. Whether during his visits to Southeast and Central Asia or when hosting foreign leaders in China, promoting mutually beneficial cooperation remained a constant leitmotif.

During King Tupou VI of Tong's visit to China last November, the monarch learned about the cultivation of juncao grass, a technology promoted by President Xi Jinping to combat poverty.

"Juncao" is a grass used to grow edible mushrooms, feed livestock, and prevent soil erosion. As the king noted, this technology has enormous potential for developing countries like Tonga.

Xi Jinping shared his vision of global cooperation, assuring the monarch that China would share development opportunities with countries around the world.

Beyond the Chinese leader's major global initiatives, 2025 also demonstrated China's stronger commitment to promoting more inclusive development in a world divided between unilateralism and protectionism on the one hand, and multilateralism and openness on the other.

In December 2025, China launched a special customs regime at the Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP), the world's largest by area, allowing for freer entry of foreign goods, introducing zero tariffs on more products, and introducing more business-friendly measures.

During his visit to Hainan Province last November, Xi Jinping outlined his vision of developing the CPST into a key gateway for China's opening up in the new era.

Historically, Hainan Island, which extends further south than parts of northern Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, has been a key center of the country's reform efforts. In 1988, it became the country's only provincial-level special economic zone, marking a turning point in China's modernization drive.

Drawing attention to historical continuity in this regard, Xi Jinping noted: “We are step by step following the path of reform and opening up with Chinese characteristics, thanks to which we have achieved our current achievements.”

"China doesn't make empty promises," said Lee Ju-kwan, head of the National Center for APEC Studies at the Korea Institute of International Economic Policy in the Republic of Korea.

According to the expert, China has translated its commitments into concrete actions that “clearly demonstrate China’s commitment to promoting openness and fulfilling its obligations as a major power.”

A corresponding message is clearly expressed in Xi Jinping's New Year's address. "China firmly stands on the right side of history and is ready to join forces with all countries to ensure global peace and development in the name of building a community with a shared future for humanity," the Chinese President added.

Aden, Yemen, January 2 (Xinhua) — Saudi Arabian warplanes have intensified airstrikes on several targets in the oil-rich Hadramaut province in southeastern Yemen, including Seiyoun Airport and surrounding areas, local media reported on Friday.

According to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) satellite channel AIC, seven members of one family were killed in the strikes on the airport and nearby residential buildings.

Local residents told Xinhua that the airstrikes caused panic among civilians, forcing many families to flee their homes.

The intense Saudi airstrikes come amid fierce clashes between STC forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces for control of military bases and government institutions in Hadramaut.

According to local sources, fighting has escalated in recent hours as both sides seek to expand their influence in the strategically important region.

Bishkek, January 2 (Xinhua) — The cultural heritage of the ancient Silk Road is of fundamental importance to Kyrgyzstan. Cooperation with China and other countries along the Silk Road in this area can be seen as steadily developing, said Mars Sariev, a political scientist from Kyrgyzstan and an expert on Central Asian affairs, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

Since China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative more than a decade ago, the issue of transmitting and preserving cultural heritage along the ancient Silk Road has received increasing attention.

"In international cooperation, the Silk Road serves as a universal cultural language, uniting countries with different political and economic models around shared historical and cultural values," noted M. Sariev. "Kyrgyzstan's cooperation with China and other countries along the Silk Road in the area of cultural heritage can generally be assessed as steadily developing."

According to the expert, the most successful areas include the multilateral UNESCO project "Silk Roads: The Routes Network of the Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor," which has become an important example of a transnational nomination; joint archaeological research and scientific consultations, including with the participation of specialists from China, Kazakhstan, and other countries; academic exchanges, internships, and conferences on the history and archaeology of the Silk Road; exhibition projects and cultural forums that promote the common heritage.

"The cultural heritage of the ancient Silk Road is of fundamental importance to Kyrgyzstan—both historically and culturally, and in contemporary social and international terms," the political scientist emphasized, adding that historically, the territory of modern Kyrgyzstan was an active hub of transcontinental routes linking China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Centers such as Suyab, Balasagun (Burana), Navekat, and Osh were sites of intense cultural, religious, and technological exchange.

According to M. Sariev, this heritage underscores the multilayered and open nature of Kyrgyzstan's cultural identity, shaping the country's image as a space for dialogue among civilizations. "In contemporary social development, the Silk Road legacy contributes to strengthening intercultural tolerance, shaping the regional identity of Central Asia, developing cultural tourism and creative industries, and enhancing Kyrgyzstan's 'soft power' in the international arena," he believes.

According to the Kyrgyz political scientist, the use of modern technologies—remote sensing, 3D modeling, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality—opens up entirely new opportunities for preserving and promoting the heritage of the Silk Road.

“These technologies enable non-invasive archaeological research, the creation of digital copies of monuments under threat of destruction, the modeling of lost sites and historical landscapes, and the making of cultural heritage accessible to a wider audience, including young people and the international community,” he noted.

According to M. Sariev, in the future, efforts to transfer and preserve the cultural heritage of the ancient Silk Road can be applied in such areas as joint nominations of UNESCO sites, including the expansion of existing serial nominations and the preparation of new cross-border dossiers, the creation of a single digital database of Silk Road monuments with unified standards for description, monitoring and preservation, joint research and development in the field of modern conservation and restoration technologies, especially in the conditions of a mountainous and seismically active region, training programs for personnel and youth specialists, including archaeologists, restorers, museum curators and cultural tourism managers, the development of transnational tourist routes focused not only on mass but also on scientific, educational and cognitive tourism.

Touching upon the "Silk Road spirit," whose core is peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and borrowing, mutual benefit, and shared gain, M. Sariev believes that in the new era, modern forms of heritage interpretation play a significant role, including interactive museums, digital exhibitions and VR routes, educational programs and school courses focused on cultural dialogue, media projects, and social networks that speak to young people in a language they understand.

“Thus, the cultural heritage of the Silk Road can become not only an object of protection, but also a living resource for shaping the values of the future – through knowledge, technology, and international cooperation,” he concluded. –0–
