NANCHANG, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) — Eight people were killed after their car fell into a pond in Pengze County, east China's Jiangxi Province, local police said on Wednesday.

According to the county public security department, the tragedy occurred on Tuesday at around 4:00 p.m. on a rural highway in one of the villages.

A 49-year-old woman was reportedly driving the vehicle when it crashed into a roadside pond. All eight occupants, including the driver, were killed.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics arrived at the scene to conduct a rescue operation. An investigation is underway.
