UNITED NATIONS, July 29 (Xinhua) — One million women and girls in the Gaza Strip are facing mass starvation, violence and abuse, UN Women said in a statement on Monday as the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza escalated.

The statement said malnutrition was on the rise and basic services had long been disrupted, forcing women and girls to resort to increasingly dangerous survival strategies.

“Women and girls in Gaza face an impossible choice: starve to death in their shelters or go out in search of food and water, at great risk of being killed. Their children are starving to death before their eyes. This is appalling, unacceptable and unacceptable. It is inhumane,” UN Women Executive Director Sima Bacchus said in a statement.

"This suffering must end immediately. We need unimpeded humanitarian access on a large scale and a permanent ceasefire leading to sustainable peace," she said.

CANBERRA, July 29 (Xinhua) — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called Israel's denial of a famine in Gaza "beyond comprehension."

Speaking at a meeting of his ruling Labor Party in Canberra on Tuesday, E. Albanese criticized statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's deputy chief of mission to Australia Amir Meron that there are no signs of famine in Gaza.

The Australian prime minister said that while any information provided by Hamas should be taken with a grain of salt, it is Israel that is not allowing journalists into the Gaza Strip.

"Claims that there is no famine in Gaza are beyond comprehension," he said.

NEW YORK, July 29 (Xinhua) — A gunman killed four people and wounded six others in an office building in Manhattan in New York City on Monday evening before committing suicide.

Shane Tamura, 27, opened fire around 6 p.m. /2200 GMT/ and died of an "apparent self-inflicted wound," CNN reported, a story later confirmed by Mayor Eric Adams.

“The scene is now contained and the shooter has been neutralized,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on social media.

According to local media reports, one of the victims was a police officer and the other three were civilians.

The film "Nanjing Photo Studio" tells the story of a group of Chinese citizens who seek refuge in a photo studio during the brutal occupation of Nanjing by the Japanese invaders.

In a desperate bid to survive, they are forced to help a Japanese war photographer develop film – only to discover that the negatives contain irrefutable evidence of atrocities committed by Japanese troops across the city. Secretly saving the negatives, they risk their lives to pass them on to the outside world in the hopes of exposing the truth.
