CHENGDU, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin announced the opening of the 12th World Games at a ceremony at the Tianfu International Conference Center in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on Thursday evening.

Under the Tianfu Roof, the largest single wooden structure in Asia, stretching 430 meters, some 10,000 spectators greeted Shen Yiqin with thunderous applause as she officially declared the Games open. Also present at the ceremony were International World Games Association (IWGA) President Jose Perurena and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Committee member Li Lingwei.

The 12th World Games will be held from August 7 to 17 under the theme of “Unlimited Sports, Countless Wonders”. This is the first World Games to be held in mainland China. Chengdu previously successfully hosted the 31st FISU World Summer Universiade in 2023.

A truly historic event was the torch relay of the World Games in Chengdu, which took place on July 26 at the iconic Sanxingdui Ruins Museum, the cultural “heart” of Sichuan Province. The relay involved 120 torchbearers.

The Chengdu World Games are the largest in history, with a record 6,679 athletes and officials from 116 countries and regions taking part. 3,942 athletes will compete in 256 disciplines across 34 sports.

China has sent its largest delegation ever to the Games, 489 people, including 321 athletes. The Chinese team will feature para-athletes for the first time. Chinese athletes will compete in 152 disciplines in 28 sports, debuting in 12 of them, including cheerleading, ultimate frisbee and powerboating.

In her video message, IOC President Kirsty Coventry welcomed the athletes, officials and fans.

“I would like to thank the Chinese organisers for their usual professionalism, hospitality, impeccable organisation and legendary Chinese efficiency,” said Coventry. “I thank the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Chinese sports authorities, local and central government for their continued support, and the people of Chengdu and the volunteers for all their enthusiasm and contributions,” she added.

In his speech, H. Perurena praised Chengdu's efforts, noting that his "dedication to the cause exceeded all expectations."

“Thank you for your vision, your tireless work and your deep belief in the values that the World Games represent. Chengdu, you are not just the host, you are the heart of these Games,” said Perurena.

With the 2025 Chengdu World Games being Perurena's last as IWGA President, he added: "I can't imagine a better farewell than standing here in Chengdu, at the centre of world sport."

Gao Zhidan, Chairman of the Chengdu Organizing Committee and Director of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China, said that Chengdu aims to host "succinct, safe and wonderful" Games, guided by the principles of openness, inclusiveness and cooperation.

"We hope that hosting the World Games will effectively stimulate the development of public health initiatives, give impetus to the sports industry, accelerate the development of the city, and allow the benefits of sports development to reach a wider mass of people," Gao Zhidan said.

The organizers did not build new facilities. Instead, they used the facilities left over from the Universiade, modernized 18 arenas, and set up 9 temporary sites in parks near lakes. In total, 27 facilities will be used in the competition. –0–

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his firm belief that any trade wars are destructive and should be avoided, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said on Thursday.

“This is depressing news,” Mr. Haq said at a daily briefing when asked about the introduction of U.S. tariffs that took effect on Aug. 7.

NAIROBI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — A light aircraft carrying four people crashed in a residential area on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya's capital, on Thursday, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said in a statement.

According to official information, the air crash involved a Cessna Citation 560 air ambulance aircraft, tail number 5Y-FDM, which took off from Wilson Airport in Nairobi at 14:14 local time, heading to the city of Hargeisa in northern Somalia. The aircraft crashed in the Mwihoko area three minutes into the flight, it was reported.

The plane, which belonged to air ambulance service provider African Medical Research and Development Foundation (AMREF Flying Doctors), went down under unclear circumstances, KCAA CEO Emile Arao said, but did not provide any information on the fate of those on board.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance. Our first priority is to support the rescue efforts and provide all necessary assistance to the families of the victims," said E. Arao.

HARARE, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — China on Thursday delivered a fresh batch of food aid to Zimbabwe to bolster food security in the southern African country following a devastating drought caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon last year.

Speaking at a handover ceremony in the Zimbabwean capital Harare, Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Mercy Dinha thanked China for the donation of about 3,000 tonnes of rice and wheat, saying it would go a long way to helping vulnerable people.

"We are talking about families headed by children, disabled people and the elderly. We will try to ensure that this cargo reaches those in need, especially in hard-to-reach areas," said M. Dinha.

"China is our all-weather friend. This country helps us in developing infrastructure and agriculture. So I sincerely want to thank China for participating in the development of Zimbabwe," she added.

Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding, for his part, stressed China's firm commitment to helping Zimbabwe ensure food security and reduce poverty. According to the diplomat, the food supplies were part of China's response to Zimbabwe's international appeal for food aid following last year's devastating drought.

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — The Beijing Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a blue alert for rainstorms, forecasting heavy rainfall across the city.

The meteorological service predicts moderate to heavy rainfall from the morning to midnight on August 8, with particularly intense rainfall expected in suburban areas including Yanqing, Huairou, Miyun and Pinggu. Over the course of 24 hours, rainfall in these areas could reach more than 30 mm per hour, with some areas experiencing more than 100 mm per hour.

The capital's water management department and meteorological service issued a joint warning at 8:00 p.m. Thursday due to the threat of mountain torrents. In particular, the Miyun district will be in a high-risk zone from 6:00 a.m. on August 8, while the probability of mountain torrents will also remain in other mountainous areas.

Almaty, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan will send 600 million cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan, the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported on Thursday, citing Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that a tense situation with irrigation water has developed in the south of Kazakhstan, which can be resolved thanks to agreements on the passage of approximately 600 million cubic meters of water.

According to K. Bozumbayev, all necessary consultations were held with colleagues from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Last week, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan were behind schedule in delivering water to Kazakhstan by just over 1 billion cubic meters.

K. Bozumbayev noted that in 2025, all Central Asian countries will experience low water levels, high temperatures in the summer and a lack of precipitation.

MINSK, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Belarus and China share a common position on protecting and preserving historical truth, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Lukashevich said in an interview with Xinhua in Minsk.

S. Lukashevich noted the importance of China's contribution to the fight against the fascist coalition, in particular, to the fight against aggression from militaristic Japan. "We understand this very well in Belarus because every third resident of Belarus was killed during the Great Patriotic War. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Cambodia and Thailand reached consensus on the details of a ceasefire and signed a relevant agreement at an extraordinary meeting of the bilateral General Committee on Boundary Issues held in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by officials from Cambodia and Thailand, as well as representatives from China, Malaysia and the United States as third-party observers.

According to a joint statement following the talks held at the Malaysian Ministry of Defence, the parties agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire, including a ban on the use of all types of weapons against civilians, civilian objects and military targets, pledged to avoid unprovoked shelling of each other's positions and troops, and not to increase military presence along the border.

The parties agreed to maintain the current deployment of troops without further movements, as was the case at the time of the conclusion of the ceasefire from 00:00 on July 29. In addition, they committed to ensure proper treatment of prisoners of war in accordance with international humanitarian law.

We are strengthening our regional cohesion, and this ASEAN spirit guides us today and will continue to guide us on our path forward,” he stressed.
