180 years of the Russian Geographical Society!

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

On August 18, 1845, by the highest order of Emperor Nicholas I, the Russian Geographical Society was founded in St. Petersburg. It is one of the oldest public organizations in Russia, which has never stopped its work since its foundation. It is also one of the first geographical societies in the world; only the Paris, Berlin, and London societies were founded before it.

The main task of the Russian Geographical Society has always been the accumulation of reliable topographic knowledge about the native country and the planet as a whole, its publication and popularization of geographical science. The Society has made a huge contribution to the study of Siberia, the Urals, the Far East, the Caucasus, Asian regions, as well as distant India, New Guinea, Arctic territories and the waters of the World Ocean.

The society unites specialists in the field of geography and related sciences, as well as enthusiastic travelers, ecologists, and public figures. Among the founders of the RGS was the famous admiral Ivan Kruzenshtern, "the man and the steamship", who led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. At one time, it included well-known scientists, researchers, and travelers, including Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, who received the second part of his surname for studying the mountain system of the same name, Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay, the most famous explorer and friend of the Papuans of New Guinea, as well as geologist and author of the science fiction novels "Sannikov Land" and "Plutonia" Vladimir Obruchev. In addition, the RGS included artists whose work went beyond the studios, Ivan Aivazovsky and Vasily Vereshchagin. The Russian Geographical Society also accepted foreign explorers, including Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyerdahl.

The Russian Geographical Society owns the largest geographical library in Europe, which is located in the society’s St. Petersburg headquarters.

Today, the society has more than 28,000 members. RGS organizes and conducts many interesting projects, including the film festival "GRO Unites Friends", the photo contest "The Most Beautiful Country", the Crystal Compass Award, the international educational campaign "Geographical Dictation", in which students of the State University of Management take part annually. And of course, RGS is expeditions, lectures, exhibitions, environmental campaigns, work on the study and conservation of rare animal species.

In 2009, Vladimir Putin became the head of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society, and Sergey Shoygu became the president, which shows the special attention of the Russian government to issues of geographical science. Vladimir Putin also approved a list of measures for the popularization of geography, which included the Geographer's Day holiday, timed to coincide with the founding day of the Russian Geographical Society. This year it is celebrated for the fifth time – also a small anniversary.

Among the employees of the State University of Management there are two members of the Russian Geographical Society – this is the adviser to the rector's office Nikolai Mikhailov and professor of the Department of Economics and Management in the fuel and energy complex of the State University of Management Vladimir Linnik. Moreover, the first has been a member of the society for 53 years, and the second for less than one. But Vladimir Linnik heads the Expeditionary Corps of the State University of Management, at the grand opening of which Nikolai Mikhailov presented him with a membership card.

Even before the official opening of our thematic division, students and staff of the State University of Management began active cooperation with the inter-university Student Expeditionary Corps "Arctic Team". Their first steps in this direction were search operations in Sebezh, a trip to the Arctic and participation in the Tourist Rally of the Union State. The latest expedition to date helped in the construction of an access platform for equipment near the fire pond in the Mordovian State Nature Reserve named after P. G. Smidovich. The work was carried out within the framework of the "Water Frontier" project with the support of the Nature Defenders Fund.

In addition, the State University of Management trains specialists in the field of Ecology and Nature Management, so with us, a passion for geography and travel can always be turned into a profession.

The State University of Management congratulates the Russian Geographical Society on its anniversary, including its current members Nikolay Mikhailov and Vladimir Linnik, as well as all participants of the GUU Expeditionary Corps on Geographer's Day. May the horizon always be clear, the wind blow at your back, and incredible adventures await behind every hill.

All the islands have been discovered long ago. Even those where it's cramped and just the two of us. But everything we know means nothing. Everything we know means nothing to us – We'll find a new one!

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Jae-myung on Monday ordered preparations for the phased implementation of existing inter-Korean agreements, his office said.

At a cabinet meeting, Lee Jae-myung ordered relevant departments to prepare for the phased implementation of existing agreements with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), starting with those that can be implemented.

The South Korean president said the ROK will steadily take steps to reduce tensions by maintaining ironclad readiness, stressing that small steps will restore mutual trust, expand the path to peace and ultimately lay the foundation for the joint development of both countries on the Korean Peninsula.

Lee Jae-myung's statement followed a pledge he made last week during a speech marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japanese colonial rule. The president pledged to take consistent measures to ease tensions and restore trust with the DPRK.

He also promised to take gradual steps to restore the Sept. 19, 2018, military agreement signed at the inter-Korean summit to prevent accidental clashes and strengthen military trust between the two countries. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — A total of 15,000 passenger vehicles and 163,000 freight vehicles passed through the Horgos Port of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the first seven months of 2025, the Xinjiang Daily newspaper reported, citing a source in the Horgos Port of International Road Transport Administration.

Both figures rose by 25 percent and 14.7 percent, respectively, the data showed.

The international bus station in the city of Khorgos operates two routes to the Kazakh cities of Almaty and Zharkent. MINSK, Aug. 18 /Xinhua/ — Belarusians, like no one else, understand the pain of the Chinese people in the fight against militaristic Japan because similar tragic events took place in Belarus. This was stated in an interview with a Xinhua correspondent in Minsk by Igor Lutsky, Chairman of the Board of the Second National TV Channel of Belarus, during the opening of a photo exhibition called “Remembering the Past, Creating the Future” in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggressors and the World Anti-Fascist War, which opened in the Victory Hall of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War.

I. Lutsky noted that this exhibition allows preserving the history of what the USSR and China did together to ensure global peace. “It is very sad that the current situation in the world is also close to collapse. But we see that the leaders of China and Belarus are doing everything to preserve peace. And the upcoming meeting on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, which will be held in China, will mark the beginning of another powerful movement to preserve peace,” the Xinhua interlocutor emphasized.

He also reported that he visited the places in Nanjing and Wuhan where Japanese militarists committed atrocities against the Chinese people. “Belarusians, like no one else, understand the pain of the Chinese people in the fight against militaristic Japan because similar tragic events took place in Belarus. The genocide of the Belarusian and Chinese peoples at that time is something incredibly wild for humanity,” I. Lutsky noted.

He also noted the connection between the destruction of Nanjing and Minsk. These tragic historical events are also a reason for the Chinese and Belarusians to better understand each other's pain.

"We are doing everything to ensure that this memory, shared pain, shared tragedy lives in the hearts of our people today, so that they do not forget it. We are also doing everything to ensure that the new generation does not forget the history of the joint heroic struggle, including when talking about World War II, about the struggle of the Chinese people against the Japanese invaders. We are talking not only about the tragedy, but also about the immortal feat," I. Lutsky emphasized.

According to him, the heroes shown at the photo exhibition demonstrated an example of how to defend peace and our homeland together. “It is very important to pass this on to future generations. The leaders of our two countries are absolutely determined to resolve any conflicts peacefully and are working to maintain a peaceful agenda on a global scale,” I. Lutsky summed up. –0–

HARARE, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — Chinese-invested steelmaker Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) has helped accelerate Zimbabwe's industrialization, the country's Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Jenfan Muswere said.

Speaking during a media tour on Friday, Muswere described the project as one of President Emmerson Mnangagwa's success stories, saying it reflected Zimbabwe's aspirations to achieve industrial self-sufficiency.

“For many decades, Zimbabwe imported billions of dollars worth of steel, but with the advent of DISCO, the country is now benefiting from import substitution,” said D. Muswere.

He said the steel plant, which received a special economic zone certificate as well as development and operating permits from the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency last week, would help beneficiate minerals and increase their value addition, thereby stimulating job creation and contributing to Zimbabwe's economic growth.

Xu Keming, CEO of DISCO, said the special economic zone status would help unlock Zimbabwe's industrialisation potential and contribute to the country's economic growth.

“We will be ready to accept new investments in the industrial park, especially in the zone. We believe that this zone will become the most successful and dynamic zone in the country,” the head of the company said, adding that the steel plant will be the main project in the industrial zone, where investments in enterprises engaged in the extraction and processing of raw materials are welcomed.

DISCO, a subsidiary of China's Tsingshan Holding Group, has started construction of a steel plant in the Midlands province in 2022 in a bid to make Zimbabwe a major regional player in steel production. –0–
