Beijing, December 30 (Xinhua) — China-US relations are among the most important bilateral ties in the modern world, with the two countries' strategic choices influencing the direction of world history. This was stated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday.

Speaking at a symposium on the international situation and Chinese diplomacy in 2025, Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, said that China and the United States should seek ways to address each other's concerns on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit to find a proper way for the two major powers to coexist.

According to him, over the past year, China has maintained a firm and clear position on significant fundamental issues, resolutely stood its ground and did not give in one iota on issues affecting China's fundamental interests.

At the same time, China is conducting exchanges and seeking cooperation with the American side, calling on the latter to perceive China rationally and objectively, and to resolve mutual differences through consultations and dialogue, the diplomat added.

Wang Yi noted that the development of China-US relations over the past year has shown that the ability to respect each other, peacefully coexist, and cooperate mutually for the benefit of the entire world is a key factor in the stable development of China-US relations.

China and the United States gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation, he stressed, adding that an arrogant attitude is unacceptable and a discrepancy between words and actions is unacceptable. –0–

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) — Here are Xinhua's top 10 international news stories for 2025.

1. The diplomacy of the Chinese head of state promotes peace and development.

In 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the SCO summit in Tianjin, a commemorative gathering to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the Global Women's Summit, and other events. He visited three Southeast Asian countries, Russia, and the Republic of Korea, participated in the second China-Central Asia Summit, the 32nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leaders' Meeting, the BRICS Online Summit, and delivered a video message at a special UN high-level event on climate change.

He held in-depth talks and exchanged views with leaders of various states and international political figures, and also communicated with residents of various countries through meetings, letters, etc.

With a keen understanding of contemporary trends, Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative, following on from the three global initiatives. It received broad response and support from the international community, making a significant contribution to the noble cause of peace and human development.

2. The US-initiated tariff war has serious implications for the multilateral trading system

On April 2, the United States announced the imposition of so-called "equivalent tariffs" on the vast majority of its trading partners. Over the past year, Washington has consistently imposed or threatened to impose additional tariffs on goods such as steel, aluminum, automobiles, film, and semiconductors, bringing the current tariff rates to their highest level in nearly a century.

This move, which dealt a serious blow to the multilateral trading system and seriously disrupted the normal order of international trade, drew sharp criticism from the international community. Many countries adopted countermeasures and stepped up efforts to reduce the risk of dependence on the US market by diversifying trade and investment. Several US courts also ruled that the policy of imposing large-scale tariffs violated the law.

3. The international community celebrates the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II

The year 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the UN. The international community held various commemorative events.

On May 7, the UN General Assembly convened a special commemorative session to honor the memory of all victims of World War II. On May 9, Xi Jinping took part in commemorative events in Russia commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War. On September 3, Xi Jinping addressed a commemorative meeting to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

In a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings, Xi Jinping called for promoting a correct view of history, upholding the victory of World War II, upholding the international system with the UN at its core, practicing genuine multilateralism, and upholding international justice and fairness.

4. Rapid development of AI requires stronger regulation

Over the past year, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have undergone rapid evolution. Major models like DeepSeek and ChatGPT have developed at a remarkable pace, while applications incorporating AI agents and embodied intelligence have emerged one after another. Their deep integration with the real economy is becoming increasingly evident, expanding capabilities across a wide range of industries and reaching households worldwide.

The risks and challenges posed by AI have attracted considerable attention. This year, the UN launched two mechanisms: the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

The Global Action Plan on AI Governance was published in Shanghai at the 2025 World Conference on Artificial Intelligence and the High-Level Conference on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence. China proposed the establishment of a World Organization for Artificial Intelligence Cooperation and launched the "AI Plus" international cooperation initiative aimed at promoting AI development for the benefit of all.

5. Turbulence in the global market increases economic risks

In October, global gold prices exceeded $4,000 per ounce for the first time. Gold prices rose sharply, driven by factors such as the US federal government shutdown. Since September, the US Federal Reserve has cut interest rates three times, and further monetary easing has undermined the appeal of US dollar-denominated assets.

Heightened concerns among international capital about geopolitical tensions and risks to confidence in the dollar have led to a shift of funds into gold, a traditional safe-haven asset. Central banks around the world continue to increase their gold reserves, bringing official holdings to their highest level in nearly a decade. The decline in confidence in the dollar and the sharp rise in gold prices reflect growing structural risks in the global economy and highlight the profound instability of the international monetary system.

6. Conflicts in the Middle East are causing catastrophic losses, while peace remains elusive.

On October 9, Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) reached an agreement on the first phase of a ceasefire in Gaza, although sporadic violence continues. More than two years of protracted fighting have led to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, leaving over 70,000 people dead, over 170,000 injured, and nearly 2 million displaced.

In 2025, conflicts flared repeatedly across the region, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Israeli-Lebanese conflict, the Israeli-Iranian conflict, and clashes between Yemen's Houthis and Israel. The US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards set a dangerous precedent. The political and diplomatic process to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue has reached a dead end. Achieving lasting peace and stability in the Middle East continues to require sustained and concerted efforts by the international community.

7. The 15th Five-Year Plan project gives positive impetus to the world

At the end of October, the 4th Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee adopted recommendations for drafting the 15th Five-Year Social and Economic Development Plan, which outlines the country's development plan for the next five years and has attracted considerable attention from the international community.

Observers around the world note that the recommendations call for a consistent expansion of institutional openness, the protection of the multilateral trading system, the promotion of expanded international economic flows, and the advancement of reform and development through greater openness.

This step is a clear demonstration of China's commitment to sharing opportunities and pursuing common development with the rest of the world. By continuing to promote modernization, ensure high-quality development, and decisively expand high-standard opening-up, China is providing positive impetus to global economic growth.

8. Japan's disregard for justice is causing international concern

On November 7, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the "Taiwan incident" could create a "situation threatening the survival" of Japan. This allegedly gives the country the right to deploy self-defense forces. Takaichi's erroneous statements regarding Taiwan constitute gross interference in China's internal affairs, seriously violate international law and fundamental norms of international relations, and undermine the post-war international order. Her statements also violate the one-China principle and the spirit of the Four Political Documents signed by Beijing and Tokyo, undermine the political foundation of Sino-Japanese relations, and have provoked strong outrage among the Chinese people.

Right-wing forces in Japan are currently accelerating military expansion, making claims of nuclear weapons possession, and attempting to revise the three non-nuclear principles. Dangerous trends toward resurgent militarism and attacks on justice and fairness are raising doubts and criticism among discerning figures within Japan, as well as high levels of concern among the international community.

9. The G20 summit was held on the African continent for the first time

On November 22, the Group of Twenty (G20) summit opened in Johannesburg, marking the first such summit on the African continent. Despite a boycott and resistance from the United States to the adoption of the outcome document, summit participants adopted a joint declaration on the first day, emphasizing the need to address global challenges through multilateral cooperation.

In 2025, China hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Brazil hosted the UN Climate Change Conference, and Qatar hosted the World Summit for Social Development. This ushered in the "era of the Global South" in global governance. The collective rise of the Global South has become a significant factor in safeguarding world peace, promoting common development, and improving global governance.

10. Political upheavals in different countries

The political landscape has undergone significant changes in many countries over the past year. South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol was removed from office. Thai Prime Minister Phetongthan Shinawatra was also removed from office following a wiretapping scandal. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba suddenly announced his resignation. The Peruvian Congress voted to impeach President Dina Boluarte. Coups d'état also occurred in countries such as Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Meanwhile, far-right candidates have achieved significant gains in presidential elections in Poland, Romania, and Chile, while far-right parties have won record numbers of seats in parliamentary elections in Germany, Portugal, and Japan. Political instability, compounded by socioeconomic development challenges, highlights the complex global situation, characterized by interrelated instability and change.

China and Central Asia: New Prospects for Economic and Trade Cooperation

NANJING, December 30 (Xinhua) — Rolls of specialty film undergo final cutting at the production line of Rui Ou Qifu (Suzhou) Packaging Technology Materials Co., Ltd. in East China's Jiangsu Province. These seemingly ordinary packaging materials are in high demand in Central Asian markets and are widely used in the cosmetics, food, and other industries.

"Demand for agricultural packaging materials is growing rapidly in Central Asian markets. Our products are well suited to local customers' needs for heat-shrinkable products such as eggs and vegetables," explained the company's CEO, Wang Zhensong. On December 23, a shipment of POF heat-shrinkable film weighing approximately 23 tons departed Shanghai for Kazakhstan on a China-Europe freight train, and is expected to arrive in 21 days.

The market is the most visible barometer: this high-tech company's exports to Central Asian countries have grown steadily from approximately 820,000 yuan in 2024 to more than 2.5 million yuan this year.

The individual efforts of enterprises are scaling up thanks to the continuous development of infrastructure connectivity at the national level – freight trains running across the Eurasian continent between China and Europe and China and Central Asia have significantly increased the efficiency of cross-border logistics operations.

A striking example of this is the China-Kazakhstan Logistics Cooperation Base in Lianyungang (Jiangsu Province, eastern China) – the first tangible project of the Belt and Road Initiative, which has become an international hub for transit, warehouse logistics, and trade between Central Asian countries. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the number of China-Europe and China-Central Asia train departures from Lianyungang reached a historic high: from 2,994 units during the entire 13th Five-Year Plan period to 4,000 units, with an average annual growth of over 10 percent, securing first place in Qiangsu Province in terms of train traffic.

The range of goods transported reflects the shift to a higher structure of bilateral trade: from traditional goods such as consumer goods and clothing to high-value-added products such as auto parts, photovoltaic products, and smart home appliances.

Along with the accelerated entry of "Made in China" into Central Asian markets, high-quality agricultural products from the region are expanding the selection on Chinese consumers' tables. "Last year, 14,800 tons of barley from Kazakhstan arrived in the country on 11 China-Europe and China-Central Asia trains, making this product a common sight for Chinese consumers," reported a representative of Sumec International Technology Co., Ltd.

In the first 11 months of this year, the number of China-Europe and China-Central Asia freight train shipments totaled 31,200, a 9 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This expanding logistics corridor effectively connects the markets and resources of China and Central Asia, promoting the deepening and intensification of bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

While the China-Europe and China-Central Asia high-speed freight trains create physical trade routes, the China-Central Asia Trade Facilitation Platform, which officially opened in Nanjing in June this year, represents a “digital silk road” that pools resources and connects supply and demand.

On the platform, visitors are greeted by exotic Central Asian delicacies: camel milk from Kazakhstan, natural honey from Kyrgyzstan, and fine silk products from Uzbekistan.

Since the beginning of the year, Jiangsu Suhao International Group Holding Co. Ltd., the platform operator, has been developing a "Silk Road e-commerce" model and full-cycle B2B services for Central Asia, offering small and medium-sized businesses on both sides comprehensive solutions, from demonstrations and transactions to logistics. The platform has already attracted over 500 companies, and next year it expects to surpass the 1,000-company mark.

A representative of Jiangsu Suhao International Group Holding Co. Ltd. noted that the platform will continue to focus on trade convenience and industrial cooperation, striving to make the “Gateway to Central Asia” even broader and more accessible. -0-

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) — The Tongjiang Port (Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China), located on the border between China and Russia, will officially launch a service for refunding value-added tax (VAT) for foreigners leaving China from January 1, 2026, according to a statement posted on the official website of the Tongjiang city government on Monday.

The innovation is aimed at improving the quality of services at this border crossing and stimulating cross-border consumption.

The City's Department of Commerce and the city's tax and customs services are currently working closely together to prepare for the introduction of a new measure, which includes the creation of a logo for VAT refund shops, the installation of special stands that will provide this service, and the development of bilingual signage.

At the Jialegou supermarkets where this initiative will be piloted, the equipment has been commissioned, special racks and operating system installed, and training for the employees who will be providing this service has been organized.

The above policy provides for VAT refund on eligible goods purchased by overseas individuals from stores covered by the policy when they leave China.

Tongjiang border crossing officers have already begun conducting outreach activities aimed at Russian citizens to help them become familiar with the tax refund procedure in advance.

This innovation will help reduce shopping costs and improve the consumer experience for overseas tourists. As a leading force in cooperation with Russia, Tongjiang City will continue to optimize the cross-border consumption environment and strengthen the service functions of the Tongjiang Port. It will work to create a new cross-border consumption center that integrates shopping, tourism, and customs clearance convenience, as well as deepen Sino-Russian trade and economic ties and people-to-people exchanges, according to a statement from the Tongjiang City Government. -0-

The building of the Russian Gallery of Arts as part of the museum, theater and educational complex in Sevastopol

The Russian Art Gallery building, part of a museum, theater, and educational complex, was opened on Cape Khrustalny in the hero city of Sevastopol. This was announced by Marat Khusnullin, Deputy Prime Minister and Curator of the Southern Federal District.

"The cultural and educational clusters being built in four cities—Vladivostok, Kemerovo, Kaliningrad, and Sevastopol—at the President's behest are undoubtedly the largest cultural construction projects and are destined to become symbols of modern Russia. The scale of the complexes is impressive—their total area exceeds 600,000 square meters, allowing for up to 30,000 visitors simultaneously. The complexes include a wide variety of facilities, designed both to host cultural events and to nurture the talented youth for whom our country has always been renowned. A number of these facilities have already been completed. And now, in Sevastopol, construction has been completed on the Russian Art Gallery building. With a total area of over 14,000 square meters, the complex will be able to accommodate up to 800 visitors simultaneously. It will become the largest art museum in southern Russia," said Marat Khusnullin.

The lower level of the museum complex houses a domed theater, a storage facility, and a restoration center. The upper floor houses an education and creativity center, as well as utility and amenity spaces. The exhibition halls are located in the museum's "cloud." One of the key features of the future permanent exhibition will be the Gallery of Heroes of Sevastopol.

"This is a landmark project, which we built at the behest of President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. The Russian Art Gallery will open in 2026. This facility will become not only the largest art museum in southern Russia but also a powerful center of culture, education, and creativity with truly unique solutions. Our main task now is to imbue these magnificent spaces with vibrant content, making them the heart of cultural life, a focal point for residents and visitors alike. Looking out from here onto our bay and the changing face of Sevastopol, you clearly understand: this and other facilities are more than just buildings; they are a step into the future of our city, its new cultural identity," said Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev.

According to Dmitry Lesnykh, CEO of Argo JSC, which oversaw the construction, the building took four years to construct. "It's modern, unconventional, and complex in terms of architecture, design, and construction. Every element of the building is unique. For example, the grade of concrete or the rebar, the doors or lifting mechanisms, the climate control system, or the flooring—everything has been carefully considered. This allows us to confidently say that this will be a technologically flagship cultural institution in southern Russia," commented Dmitry Lesnykh.

In the fall of 2024, Russia's southernmost Choreography Academy, designed for 250 students, opened its doors in Sevastopol. Students are already living and studying in one of the most unique ballet buildings in the world. The apartment building, built in close proximity to the new cultural facilities, is partially occupied by faculty from the Choreography Academy and staff from the Russian State Art Gallery.

Construction of the cultural cluster in Sevastopol continues. This includes the construction of the city's landmark, the opera and ballet theater. This unique structure, in terms of its design, is unique not only in Russia but worldwide.

In total, the museum, theater, and educational complex in Sevastopol includes seven buildings: the Academy of Choreography, a museum complex, an opera and ballet theater, two apartment buildings, an industrial and warehouse complex, and an electrical substation.

Marat Khusnullin: Overhaul of a 100-meter overpass has been completed in Yenakievo

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – Government of the Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Extensive road network repairs, including artificial structures, have been launched in the reunified regions. For example, by the end of the year, a 100-meter-long overpass over railway tracks in Yenakiyev, Donetsk People's Republic, was overhauled, as reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

"The overpass was built back in 1963, and connecting several districts, it is one of the city's key routes, carrying approximately 4,500 vehicles daily. Over time, the structure fell into disrepair; its structures deteriorated, and damage to one of the supports restricted truck traffic. Just before the New Year, road workers completed a major overhaul of the overpass: they reinforced the load-bearing elements and superstructures, widened the roadway, and restored two tram lanes. This extended the lifespan of the structure and made travel more comfortable and safe for city residents and residents of the region," said Marat Khusnullin.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that the overpass work was carried out under the supervision of the state-owned company Avtodor. To date, approximately 70 artificial structures have been renovated in Donbas and Novorossiya.

"The facility was supposed to be commissioned next year, but the work was completed in less than a year. You could say this is our New Year's gift to the residents of Yenakiyeve and the Donetsk People's Republic. This facility is crucial for the city and the region as a whole, as it experiences high traffic volumes. Completion of the major overhaul has reduced travel times for residents and is part of the comprehensive restoration of the region's transport infrastructure," noted Vyacheslav Petushenko, Chairman of the Board of the state-owned company Avtodor.

The New Year is just around the corner, so it's time for warm greetings and good wishes from RUDN students, faculty, and staff. May all these wishes come true in 2026!

More than 10 years ago, when I stepped into what was then the Ecology Department of RUDN University, I never imagined that university life would be so captivating! And now, 2026 is upon us… One can only guess what lies ahead and what challenges the university will face. But one thing I know for sure: any university, with its rankings and achievements, is made up of people who shape the atmosphere and spirit, achieving amazing results, making astonishing discoveries, and inspiring those around them!

Dear students and colleagues, I sincerely congratulate you on the upcoming New Year! You are the soul of RUDN University! I wish us patience, prudence, and unwavering will!

Forward to new discoveries, achievements and victories!

Irina Golovacheva

Deputy Director of the Institute of Ecology for educational work

RUDN University once became a truly precious gift to me, not just a New Year's gift. Every year it gives me wonderful friends, great opportunities, a wealth of knowledge, and warm memories. In return, on behalf of myself and the entire Student Committee of the Institute of Ecology, I wish everyone connected in one way or another with our great university success, joy, the achievement of their goals, and the fulfillment of their deepest desires in the new year!

Be happy and enjoy every day!

Yulia Shmitko

a second-year student majoring in Ecology and Nature Management

May the new year be like a perfect algorithm for our university—effective, innovative, and opening up new horizons!

I wish that every project we undertake will be groundbreaking, and that students and staff will work together to write the most successful code of the future!

Anton Poddubsky

Dean of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence

Dear RUDN, may your classrooms be filled with even more inquisitive eyes in the coming year, and may your corridors be filled with lively discussions in all the languages of the world.

I wish us all new discoveries, inspiration, and the same warm, family-like atmosphere that has always been our hallmark!

Pavel Podolko

Head of the Department of Applied Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Artificial Intelligence

Our RUDN University is the pinnacle of excellence in the art of bringing people together and creating an atmosphere of true hospitality.

May this atmosphere only become warmer in the coming year, and may our large family become even more united.

Anna Ostrovskaya
