A front-end loader has been developed to speed up snow removal in urban areas.

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The Department of Ground Transport and Technological Machines at SPbGASU conducts research into improving the design of municipal vehicles, in particular, snow removal equipment for city highways.

Today, the capacity of Russian roads is significantly reduced in winter: after heavy snowfalls, the passage of snowplows creates snow banks along the roads, taking up to half the highway lane. While these machines are quick to clear the roadway of snow, clearing the snowplows takes a long time.

At the same time, municipal companies lack standard snow removal equipment—snow blowers—for city highways. Front-end loaders, used additionally during heavy snowfalls, mitigate the problem, but they block at least two traffic lanes when loading snow onto vehicles. It's worth noting that front-end loaders are the most common type of specialized equipment used by road and construction companies, and they are rarely used for construction work in winter.

An obvious technical solution for improving snow removal from urban roads is to equip front-end loaders with a rear-dumping function. This allows the loader to load snow into a dump truck while remaining in the same lane.

Fig. 1 shows a diagram of the proposed design of a front loader with rear bucket discharge.

The loader consists of a base machine 1, a double-beam boom 2, the lower part of which is pivotally fixed in the front part of the base machine, a bucket 3, pivotally fixed on the upper part of the boom 2, a telescopic boom lifting hydraulic cylinder 4, pivotally fixed between the boom beams on the front part of the base machine frame, a bucket turning hydraulic cylinder 5, installed by means of a clamp 6 on a bracket 7, fixed on a crossbar connecting the boom beams in their upper part, a metal chute 8, installed above the cabin and the engine by means of a pair of two-legged stands 9, fixedly fixed on the sides of the front part of the frame 10, and two hydraulic cylinders 11, pivotally fixed on the sides of the middle part of the frame 10, a damping device 12, fixed on the front part of the frame 10 at a height from the road surface corresponding to the height of the bumper of the dump truck. 13.

The hydraulic cylinder 5 for turning the bucket 3 is pivotally secured in its middle part to the boom 2 by means of a clamp 6.

Chute 8 is pivotally attached to posts 9 and hydraulic cylinder rods 11. The right end of chute 8 extends beyond the base vehicle by one to one and a half meters, and its height should be at least half a meter higher than the top edge of dump truck 13 used for hauling snow, i.e., 3.2 m. Number 14 shows the trajectory of the boom end. Number 15 shows the shaft of snow being removed.

The proposed front loader operates as follows. Before collecting snow from windrow 15, located along the right edge of the roadway, loader 1 lowers bucket 3 to the lower position (shown by the dotted line) by retracting hydraulic cylinder 4. Dump truck 11 approaches the loader from the rear of chute 6. Chute 6 is lowered by retracting cylinder 9.

Bucket 3 is filled with snow by moving loader 1 to the left. Once full, the bucket is rotated clockwise using cylinder 5 until the open end of the bucket is horizontal. Boom 2 is then raised using cylinder 4 until bucket 3 is above the left edge of chute 8. While boom 2 is raised, the open end of the bucket is maintained in a horizontal position using cylinder 5. Once bucket 3 is above chute 8, it is rotated clockwise using cylinder 5 to discharge snow into the chute. While the bucket is being raised, the dump truck drives close to the loader until its rear bumper touches damper 12.

The bucket is then lowered to the snow collection position. One to two seconds after cylinder 4 is activated to lower the boom, cylinders 11 are activated to raise the left side of chute 8 to the top position (shown by the dotted line), ensuring that snow slides from chute 8 into the dump truck body 13. Once the loader begins moving to collect snow with the bucket, the chute is lowered.

The cycle of picking up and unloading snow is repeated three to five times until the body of the dump truck 13 is filled.

For the convenience of the dump truck driver, the damping device 12 can be equipped with sound and light signaling sensors.

Computer modeling has shown that the new loader's productivity is three times higher than that of a claw loader and one and a half times higher than that of a typical front-end loader.

An application for a utility model has been submitted for the design of the new loader.

The development was carried out as part of research projects by the research and teaching staff of SPbGASU using internal grants in 2025.

Twenty-five projects by RUDN University students won the all-Russian "Student Startup" competition, organized by the Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises (FASIE). Each received a grant of 1 million rubles for the further development and implementation of their ideas.

We'll cover all the winning projects, starting with the work of Graduate School of Management students Nikola Balev and Kirill Kovalev.

Virtual tourism

Nikola's project is the chatbot-based digital ecosystem QuestBook. The platform is a unique service of interactive digital tour routes and quests that allow each participant to immerse themselves in a captivating journey through the historical sites and landmarks of cities around the world.

The system has three main directions:

Adventure Quests offer unique routes through cities for young people; Business Quest offers corporate solutions for museums, parks, and events; and UNI Quest helps students adapt to university through interactive routes.

The product's relevance and advantages lie in its ability to reach a large audience with minimal costs, its content easily adapts to any changes in demand, and its platform utilizes a personalized approach to predicting tourist preferences (while fully respecting data privacy).

The development had previously participated in the RUDN.VC accelerator and won the StartUP pitching session.

"Receiving the grant is a major milestone for our team. The funds will primarily be used to promote the platform in Moscow and the Moscow region. Some of the funds will also be used to establish a legal entity, as required by the grant, to develop the platform's content and attract freelancers," says Nikola Balev, a first-year Master's student at the RUDN University Graduate School of Management (Tourism major).

As Nikola noted, the project team has been collecting feedback on the system for over three months, improving visuals, and adding new content to the platform. They plan to attract at least 3,000 unique users within a year and add content about other regions beyond Moscow.

"Our strategic plans for the next eighteen months also include business diversification and the creation of a subsidiary specializing in the B2B segment. We are currently conducting research, testing hypotheses and implementation possibilities, and developing the company's concept. The results are positive, and we hope to launch a new subsidiary platform by the end of the year. Regarding monetization, the project involves paying users for tours, with the price being quite reasonable and competitive in the digital quest tour market," notes Nikola.

An app for marathon runners

Kirill Kovalev received a grant for his sports mobile app project. This digital tool is designed to organize and manage mass sports competitions, especially marathons and running events. The app helps athletes track their physical activity, monitor their training progress, and find like-minded sports enthusiasts.

The project's creator explained that receiving the grant will allow the team to expand the app's functionality and implement new technologies that improve user experience. With the Foundation's support, the developers will be able to enhance the product's effectiveness and appeal.

"We're delighted that our idea has received such high praise. The funds will be used for platform development, testing, and launch. A basic service will be created with the foundation for future functionality expansion," says Kirill Kovalev, a second-year Bachelor's student at the Graduate School of Management (Hotel Management).

According to the student, direct collaboration with RUDN University is planned to attract the initial audience. The service will be promoted through digital channels and partners; negotiations are already underway.

"In a year, I expect to have a working service with its first users and partners. The main thing is to conduct a test launch and ensure the product meets the audience's needs. For me, this will be proof that my team and I are moving in the right direction," says Kirill Kovalev.

LONDON, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in London on Tuesday for his second state visit as president, aiming to seal new trade and security deals despite ongoing protests.

According to Buckingham Palace, King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. On Thursday, Trump and Starmer plan to hold a bilateral meeting at Chequers, the prime minister's country residence.

Around 100 residents of Windsor and other parts of the UK, organized by the Stop Trump coalition, gathered in the streets outside Windsor Castle on Tuesday evening, chanting slogans against the visit and waving signs reading "Stop Hate. Stop Trump" and "Hate Has Never Made a Nation Great." Organizers said they plan to hold a larger demonstration in central London on Wednesday.

Ahead of the visit, the British government announced more than £1.25 billion (US$1.7 billion) in US private investment in financial services and unveiled plans to sign a new nuclear energy deal during Trump's stay.

Talks between the two sides are expected to cover artificial intelligence, semiconductors, telecommunications and quantum computing, local media reported.

The visit came two months after Trump's private trip to Scotland, during which he met with K. Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a trip that also sparked mass demonstrations.
