Lilongwe, September 25 (Xinhua) — Former Malawi President Peter Mutharika won the presidential election with 56.8 percent of the vote, securing a decisive lead over incumbent leader Lazarus Chakwera, the country's electoral commission announced on Wednesday.

The president-elect, running for the Democratic Progressive Party, garnered nearly 3.04 million votes on September 16. L. UN, September 25 /Xinhua/ — Iran does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons, President of the Islamic Republic Masoud Pezeshkian stated Wednesday at the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

“I hereby reiterate to this assembly that Iran has never sought and will never seek to develop a nuclear bomb,” he said.

"We do not seek nuclear weapons. This is our conviction, based on the decree of the Supreme Leader and religious authorities. Therefore, we have never sought weapons of mass destruction and never will," the president emphasized.

M. Pezeschkian stated that attempts by three European countries (Great Britain, France and Germany), which are parties to the 2015 nuclear deal, to restore UN sanctions against Iran are illegal.
