Jerusalem, September 26 (Xinhua) — Around 700,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City amid Israeli ground and air strikes on the enclave's largest urban center, the Israeli military announced Thursday.

Israeli army spokesman Efi Defrin told reporters that "around 700,000 residents have been evacuated" since mid-August, when Israel launched a new attack on Gaza City. He said they have relocated to the so-called "humanitarian zone" in the southern Gaza Strip, without specifying the source of the data.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Thursday that some 388,400 displacements were recorded between August 14 and September 23, mostly from Gaza City towards Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah, areas projected to face famine by the end of September, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

According to E. Devrin, five ground operations divisions are active throughout the Gaza Strip, three of which are striking Gaza City and "strengthening control." Since mid-August, Israeli forces have carried out more than 2,000 strikes on "terrorist targets" in the area, he said, adding that the Air Force is carrying out approximately 200 strikes per day using fighter jets, drones, and helicopters.

Meanwhile, E. Defrin noted that the Israeli Navy is preparing to block the Global Sumud Flotilla, a group of approximately 50 vessels scheduled to reach Gaza. He accused the flotilla of being organized and financed by Hamas, stating that Israel has "unequivocal evidence," but did not provide any.

Baku, September 26 /Xinhua/ — Relations between Azerbaijan and China have entered a qualitatively new stage of development, and bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation holds great prospects. This was stated by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev on Thursday at a reception organized by the Chinese Embassy in Azerbaijan in honor of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

In his speech, he stated that the bilateral relations agenda is quite broad and cooperation is developing successfully in economic and trade, transport and logistics, energy, agriculture, digital, humanitarian, tourism, and other areas.

"China is one of Azerbaijan's main economic and trade partners. At the same time, Azerbaijan is China's largest trading partner in the South Caucasus. In the first seven months of this year, trade between our countries increased by 26 percent," he said.

Sh. Mustafayev noted that bilateral investment cooperation is also expanding. From 1995 to the first half of 2025, direct investment from China to Azerbaijan amounted to $942.3 million, while Azerbaijan invested a total of $2.1 billion in China.

At the reception, Chinese Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lu Mei stated that under the strategic leadership of the two heads of state, China and Azerbaijan have established a comprehensive strategic partnership, and Chinese-Azerbaijani relations have reached a new level, becoming an example of mutual trust, equality, and friendly cooperation between the countries.

According to her, practical cooperation is a solid foundation of relations between China and Azerbaijan, and both countries have made due contributions to maintaining the stability of global production and supply chains.

“In the first seven months of this year, trade and investment between China and Azerbaijan reached a record level, and a new record is expected to be set by the end of 2025,” she said.

Bilateral cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative has also yielded fruitful results. By the end of this year, the number of China-Europe trans-Caspian container train departures transiting through Azerbaijan is expected to double compared to last year, she added.

Food security and food safety in the context of climate change

Climate change is expected to increase the presence of mycotoxins, particularly aflatoxins, and heavy metals in food, which could have catastrophic consequences for food safety and public health in countries already facing food insecurity.

As global food systems become more complex and climate risks increase, countries will need more such portable, accessible, and scalable tools, especially in regions where conventional laboratory testing is not feasible.

Along the line Joint FAO/IAEA Centre for Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture The IAEA conducts research and development to develop technologies based on nuclear and related techniques to identify food-related threats to food security, trade and public health.

To help countries respond to food safety emergencies, the initiative Atoms4food and, in collaboration with the FAO, the IAEA is developing cost-effective and portable instruments that enable rapid testing of large numbers of samples, including in the field.

Food safety experts in Seibersdorf are working to develop this technology to cover more categories of contaminants in other foods, taking into account the needs of Member States. Furthermore, the LBKP has adapted the same sensor system to detect fumonisins (harmful mycotoxins linked to cancer and birth defects) in corn and corn-based products, as well as toxic metals such as lead in fruit juices. This flexibility makes this method instrumental in improving food safety.

According to Vlahou, “The IAEA develops comprehensive and robust tools to assist food safety stakeholders in countries around the world in maintaining the necessary levels of safety and hygiene to prevent foodborne diseases.”
