On International Coffee Day, Rosneft volunteers across Russia treated motorists to a true taste experience, introducing them to premium Venezuelan coffee, supplied by special order from the Company.

What makes this coffee unique is its origin. Venezuelan coffee beans are rarely seen on the market today due to the country's small export volumes. Bean supplies to Russia are carried out as part of a strategic partnership: in 2023, Rosneft Oil Company and Venezuelan companies signed agreements on the direct supply of Venezuelan-produced coffee beans on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

At Rosneft's special request, a delicate roasting process is carried out in the South American country using Arabica beans grown in the Andes at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level. Venezuelan coffee is noticeably different from other South American varieties. The deep and complex flavor of Venezuelan coffee makes it considered among the best in the world.

In St. Petersburg and the surrounding region, volunteers from RN-Northwest (part of Rosneft Oil Company) organized a themed celebration for motorists offering a complete immersion into the world of coffee. Guests participated in tastings and master classes, learning about the subtleties of the invigorating beverage's flavor and aroma. At the flagship St. Petersburg gas station, everyone could personally experience the difference, trying to identify the aroma of a particular coffee among others. Rosneft customers also had the opportunity to create a unique car air freshener with a subtle coffee aroma during a master class, and the most knowledgeable participants participated in a quiz and received prizes for correct answers.

At the flagship gas station in St. Petersburg, customers can use a robot barista to prepare their coffee. The machine can brew 24 types of energizing drinks and can also help create and prepare coffee according to a signature recipe. Even more—40 types of coffee bean drinks to suit every taste—are available to car tourists at the gas station on the Kola federal highway in the Leningrad Region.

A number of Rosneft gas stations in Moscow and the Moscow region have prepared themed decorations for this day. The vibrant packaging elements of the exclusive drink are reflected in the interior design, and customers receive their coffee in new, eye-catching cups.

A themed quiz was held at the flagship gas station in Voronezh. True coffee connoisseurs received pleasant branded souvenirs for correct answers.

Rosneft is developing a network of new-format gas stations with cafes under its own brand, Zerno, which emphasize the quality and taste of freshly brewed coffee.

Polytechnic University scientists have developed a way to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment.

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

SPbPU specialists have improved the effectiveness of targeted delivery of anticancer drugs to tumors. The scientists discovered that by coating drug nanoparticles with a mixture of substances that make up a third of the brain, they can precisely release the active substance in cancer cells with minimal effect on healthy tissue. The results are published in the Journal of Controlled Release. RIA Novosti.

Chemotherapy side effects—hair loss, nausea, and fatigue—occur because toxic drugs attack not only the tumor but also healthy cells. The drugs circulate through the bloodstream, even reaching unaffected tissue.

This behavior of drugs in the patient's body also reduces the overall effectiveness of treatment: only a small portion of the administered drug reaches its target. To achieve targeted drug delivery to the tumor site, it is possible to use nanocarriers—"containers" that shield the active substance from the external environment and can be controlled externally, noted Sergei Shipilovskikh, a leading researcher and associate professor at the Higher School of Biomedical Systems and Technologies at SPbPU.

These "containers" can be tagged with tags that are specific only to cancer cells, but not to healthy ones. Scientists from SPbPU and their colleagues from ITMO University discovered that applying a mixture of biological substances to the surface of nanoparticles reduces the "recognizability" of the nanocontainer to healthy cells and delivers the active substance precisely to the target.

The scientists used lecithin—a mixture of natural fats, fatty acids, and other components—to coat the nanocontainers. The human brain contains 30 percent lecithin, so the drug won't cause rejection or an immune reaction.

According to our results, approximately 80 percent of the active substance is released from the nanocontainer, which consists of silicon dioxide and is coated with a lipid shell of lecithin, specifically in cancer cells. Moreover, the effect is prolonged: the drug is not released completely at once, but gradually, exerting a cumulative effect within the tumor space, explained Sergey Shipilovskikh.

The researcher also explained that using the active ingredient in nanoparticles, rather than in its free form, is also advantageous in terms of storage conditions. In a nanocontainer, the drug is protected from atmospheric oxygen, light, and other external influences.

According to the scientists, the accumulation of nanoparticles in tumors is due to both the structural features of the lipid membrane and the fact that tumor cells are capable of more active metabolism than healthy cells. In the future, the scientists plan to elucidate the detailed mechanism of lecithin-coated nanoparticle uptake by cells and continue developing a universal system for delivering anticancer drugs to various cancer cell types.

The study was carried out within the framework of the federal program "Priority 2030".

For the city to develop, a comfortable environment for people is first and foremost needed, says Sobyanin.

The mission of the Mayor and the Government of Moscow is to make the capital the best city on the planet. Sergei SobyaninHe stated during a plenary session held as part of the Moscow Startup Summit, an international summit on technological entrepreneurship and innovation.

According to him, it's necessary to constantly raise the bar, setting new challenges that gradually increase in complexity. And the more the city develops, the greater the demands of its residents, which also provides additional incentive for work.

"There is no final goal. It's movement. If you've set some final goal for yourself, consider yourself already dead. Because a final goal is still a limit to something. But the world moves forward without any final goal. Every goal presupposes setting a new goal, more ambitious, more dynamic, and more complex. So, essentially, it's movement, movement, movement. And never a stop," Sergei Sobyanin emphasized.

To develop various sectors, including education, it is necessary to create a comfortable environment. This will motivate teachers and students to achieve high results.

"I understood that we needed to move forward, to create an environment in schools, to motivate teachers so that they, together with students, could achieve maximum results. Moscow is now among the top five schools in the world. This is how we need to move forward, to create the environment, the infrastructure, and the motivation," Sergei Sobyanin noted.

According to Sberbank President and Chairman of the Management Board Herman Gref, Moscow today offers unique living conditions. These include, first and foremost, a comfortable urban environment, the development of the Moscow metro, and the overall transportation infrastructure.

"The number of crossings, bridges, new transport interchanges, and so on that appear every year is absolutely incredible, unimaginable. Improved parks. Ultimately, all of this is about creating better living conditions for young people, including those who should remain in their own country, and creating unique conditions for startups," said Herman Gref.

Moscow also has all the conditions for the growth of high-tech industrial enterprises. Sergei Sobyanin added that entrepreneurs and businesses are actively returning to Moscow due to its highly qualified and motivated workforce, which is difficult to find in other regions.

"Regarding Moscow's new industrialization, it's proceeding precisely according to these principles: we're trying to support high-tech manufacturing, and entrepreneurs and businesses are eager to return to Moscow. Besides the infrastructure, which is crucial, and the affordable land, among other things, the most important thing is the current workforce. These are highly specialized, highly qualified, and motivated people. And such people are harder to find in other regions than in Moscow. Therefore, a large number of companies that had long since left Moscow are now returning, and they're returning at a different technological level," the Moscow Mayor said.

To attract young professionals to live and work in the capital, it's crucial to create a comfortable, well-maintained living environment. This includes various infrastructure, such as those for recreation and sports. Work to develop and improve this infrastructure is currently underway in Moscow.

"To keep people in the city, to attract them, you need to create an environment in which they live. If they don't like the environment, you can build 40 factories, but there will be no one there, nothing will work. You can build a wonderful technology park in the city, but there will be no one there. The city is the environment," Sergei Sobyanin emphasized.

By creating a comfortable environment and new jobs, the capital is actively investing in improving its industrial sector. The focus is on import-substituting technologies, the development of which facilitates the growth of a number of related industries.

"We need a technological foundation for our country, high technology, independent technology, which constitutes a significant foundation and strength for the city and our country," the Moscow Mayor noted.

According to Herman Gref, in the next 10 years, at least general artificial intelligence, and possibly even superintelligence, will emerge, which will effectively solve a vast number of humanity's unsolvable problems. This will pose a new global challenge, as people will have to figure out how to coexist with and manage it. Furthermore, a vast number of new opportunities will emerge for the creation of fundamentally new technologies, materials, and vehicles.

Kinshasa, October 1 (Xinhua) — A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia.

The former president of the DRC was found guilty of numerous crimes, including participation in the rebel movement, premeditated murder, torture, rape and the violent occupation of the city of Goma (the capital of North Kivu province), which is currently controlled by the rebel group Movement of March 23 (M23).

J. Kabila was also sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the conspiracy. For the remaining charges, the court imposed the death penalty.

The trial, which took place in absentia, began in July after the DRC Senate lifted the former president's parliamentary immunity in May.

J. Kabila, who was in power from 2001 to 2019, has lived in South Africa most of the time since 2023.

Since May, he has made several public statements in North Kivu province in eastern DRC. He also expressed a desire to return to his homeland to "contribute to finding a solution" to the ongoing crisis.

China concerned about prospects of anti-gang force in Haiti

UN, October 1 (Xinhua) — China remains seriously concerned about the prospects of establishing the UN Security Council-mandated Anti-Gang Force (GSF) in Haiti, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, said on Tuesday.

The UN Security Council on Tuesday approved a resolution transforming the Kenya-led Multinational Security Mission in Haiti (MSS) into a Global Security Support Mission (GSF). China, Pakistan, and Russia abstained from voting.

Explaining the reasons for the vote, Fu Cong noted that China did not obstruct the adoption of the document, given the grave security situation in Haiti, as well as the concerns and appeals of the international community, especially from the UN Secretary-General and countries in the region.

According to the Permanent Representative, this is the greatest possible goodwill China could demonstrate. "At the same time, it should be noted that our questions and concerns remain. We are deeply concerned about the functioning and prospects of the GSF. We hope that the UN Security Council will closely monitor and strictly oversee this mission so that it can take timely and appropriate action based on actual developments," Fu Cong stated.

He noted that the draft presented by the United States and Panama contains ambiguous wording on key issues, and the document is not the result of comprehensive consultations between Security Council members.

Given the enormous disagreements within the UN Security Council, China and Russia proposed a technical extension of the MSS mandate to allow more time for thorough discussion and consensus building. Unfortunately, the co-sponsors of the draft insisted on putting this highly controversial document to a vote. This not only undermines the Security Council's solidarity and cooperation on the Haiti issue but also damages its credibility, Fu Cong stated.

He warned that this resolution risks worsening the already complex and dire situation in Haiti. According to him, the root cause of Haiti's multifaceted crisis is the absence of a legitimate government and a vacuum in public administration, which has created fertile ground for violent crime.

China is ready to continue constructive cooperation with the international community to help Haiti emerge from the crisis as soon as possible, Fu Cong concluded. –0–
