On October 13, 2025, the Global Women's Summit opened in Beijing, marking a new milestone in advancing the women's agenda on the international stage. An inspiring message delivered from the stage of the Beijing National Convention Center united more than 150 countries and international organizations around a single idea: to accelerate the comprehensive development of women in the new century and to reinforce the spirit of the 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women. The highlight of the ceremony was Chinese President Xi Jinping's keynote speech, in which he outlined China's strategic vision for global women's equality, sustainable development, and human progress.

"Women are the creators, drivers, and champions of human civilization," Xi Jinping emphasized at the opening of the summit. These words became a leitmotif of the forum, which is taking place in the year marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—the documents that laid the foundation for the global struggle for equality, development, and peace. Over three decades, the idea of gender equality has evolved from a local initiative into a universally accepted principle of the international community. Today, 189 countries have ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and more than 190 states have nearly 1,600 laws in force to ensure women's rights. However, despite this progress, the world remains faced with serious challenges. More than 600 million women and girls live in war and conflict zones, and approximately 10 percent live in extreme poverty. The gender gap in the digital sphere is widening, and violence and discrimination remain.

In this context, Xi Jinping called on the international community to join forces and act decisively to ensure women's comprehensive development and equal opportunities. He emphasized that peace and security are the foundation of women's well-being, without which the full development of society is impossible. China calls on the international community to strengthen mechanisms for the protection of women and children in conflict and disaster zones, resolutely combat violence and discrimination, and support the significant role of women in conflict prevention and the reconstruction of homes and communities.

According to the Chinese leader, the modernization of humanity is impossible without the modernization of women. Women must be involved in the technological revolution, the digital economy, and green development, so that everyone can realize their dreams in an era of global transformation. He also emphasized the importance of improving the legal framework, expanding women's access to education and healthcare, and creating a harmonious social environment free of prejudice and discrimination, where gender equality becomes a norm of public morality and the natural behavior of every citizen.

Xi Jinping called for a new chapter in international cooperation on women's development, noting that women are a vital force in reforming and improving the global governance system. China intends to continue to support the UN's key role, paying particular attention to the needs of women in developing countries and creating new and broad platforms for exchange and learning for women from around the world.

The white paper "China's Achievements in Comprehensive Development of Women's Affairs in the New Era," published on the eve of the summit, was a logical addition to this agenda. The document emphasizes that Chinese women are not simply participants, but active creators of the country's modernization. Today, their share of the total labor force exceeds 40 percent, and among internet entrepreneurs, they constitute more than half. Women actively participate in national governance, contributing to rural revitalization, digital transformation, and innovative industries. Over the past decades, the maternal mortality rate in China has decreased by nearly 80 percent, and more than 690 million women have been lifted out of poverty, an unprecedented achievement in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

China systematically integrates women's development into national strategies. Women are playing an increasingly prominent role in environmental protection, preserving cultural heritage, promoting traditional culture, and creating a new social model based on participation and shared interests. Particular attention is paid to supporting grassroots women's organizations, which are becoming a vital force in public governance and the creation of a harmonious society.

Internationally, China not only inspires by example but also shares its resources and experience. Over the next five years, the country will contribute $10 million to UN Women, provide $100 million from the Global Development Fund and South-South Cooperation for projects aimed at the development of women and girls, launch 1,000 "small but significant" social programs with women as a priority, invite 50,000 women to study and exchange programs in China, and establish the Global Women's Empowerment Center—a new international platform for developing women leaders and next-generation professionals.

The Beijing summit became not only a space for political statements but also a living gallery of stories illustrating the strength and inspiration of women's achievements. In Chengdu, China, British woman Rachel Grace Pinninger has been helping people with disabilities and low-income communities gain self-confidence through handicrafts for over a decade. In Congo, Shanghai-educated entrepreneur Tisya Mukuna has revived the coffee industry, becoming a symbol of Africa's economic awakening. And in the Gaza Strip, despite the horrors of war, doctor Somaya Shomer continues to deliver babies in a field hospital, insisting that life is stronger than death. These stories, intersecting across continents, embody the meaning of the global women's agenda promoted by China: courage, creativity, and faith in the future.

As Xi Jinping noted, standing at a new historical starting point, humanity must convey and build on the spirit of the Beijing World Conference on Women, move toward building a community with a shared future for humanity, and jointly create a more beautiful future. A Chinese proverb says, "What is done with diligence and perseverance will eventually blossom." These words became the symbol of the summit, demonstrating that the comprehensive development of women is not just a part of social policy, but a crucial element of global modernization. Beijing reaffirmed its role as a global center for dialogue on a future in which women do not stand aside but confidently hold up half the sky.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — A cold cyclone hit Mohe, China's northernmost city, on Monday, Oct. 13, sending the temperature to minus 22.6 degrees Celsius, marking the city's coldest day since early autumn, chinanews.com.cn reported, citing the local meteorological service.

Due to the cold weather on both banks of the Chinese-Russian border river Heilongjiang (Amur), a stunning phenomenon has appeared in the city of Mohe – frost on the trees, attracting many tourists who want to enjoy the picturesque landscape and take spectacular photos and selfies.

Mohe City, administratively located in the Greater Khingan Region of Heilongjiang Province, is located at the northernmost edge of China's territory, earning it the nickname "China's North Pole." It's also known as the "City of the Northern Lights," as it's the only place in China where the phenomenon can be observed. The average annual temperature here is -3.5 degrees Celsius, with a maximum temperature of -53 degrees Celsius.

The drop in temperatures since October has created favorable conditions for a revival of winter tourism in the city. At China's northernmost ski resort, the Mohe Northern Lights Ski Resort, snow cannons are roaring, and staff are working overtime to open its doors to ski enthusiasts as soon as possible.

Forecasters predict that temperatures in Mohe may rise slightly in the next few days, but the minimum daily temperature will still remain below minus 10 degrees Celsius. -0-

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — The China-Russia-Mongolia Culture and Arts Center was officially opened in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region recently. Its founders envision it as a new platform for promoting inter-civilizational exchanges between the three countries as part of efforts to implement the Belt and Road Initiative.

According to the Chinese education news website jvb.cn, the new center was established at Hulunbuir University, located in the city of the same name, which borders both Russia and Mongolia. The center's primary goal is to develop in-depth collaboration with foreign universities in areas such as academic research, artistic creation, organizing exhibitions and performances, and jointly training qualified artists.

The list of potential partners for cooperation with the center includes, in particular, such Russian universities as the Trans-Baikal State University, the East Siberian State Institute of Culture, and the Siberian State Institute of Arts named after Dmitry Hvorostovsky, said Li Wenge, secretary of the party committee of Hulun Buir University, at the center's opening ceremony, which was also attended by the rector of the eastern branch of the Mongolian National University.

"The establishment of this center is not so much a measure to modernize educational cooperation as a practical way to promote intercivilizational dialogue," Li Wenge noted, emphasizing the important role of young people in strengthening cultural exchanges, promoting mutual learning, and fostering mutual enrichment between the civilizations of the three countries. He added that to cultivate young talent, the center will focus on activities such as developing interdisciplinary research programs and organizing multilingual art master classes. -0-

The "Promising Researchers in Biomedicine" talent pool program, organized by the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technology at Novosibirsk State University (NSU), has entered its active implementation phase. The first session was recently held by program expert Pavel Geidt, head of the NSU Laboratory for Functional Diagnostics of Low-Dimensional Structures for Nanoelectronics.

It was devoted to the fundamental principles of organizing scientific research and allowed listeners to gain a deep understanding of the types of research, the differences between the latter and other forms of intellectual activity, and also developed the ability to correctly set goals, define tasks, and formulate correct working hypotheses.

All participants, together with their supervisors, are also actively developing individual development plans for a period of two years, a significant portion of which have already been submitted for approval.

"We've seen a steady increase in interest in our initiative after each meeting," noted project curator Yegor Gild. "Clearly, the knowledge and working conditions we offer meet the current needs of students at the institute."

A competitive selection process is underway to select candidates for funding for participation in leading Russian and international conferences. Applications are evaluated comprehensively, taking into account the participant's activity within the program and the level of their research materials.

The project is being implemented strictly within the approved action plan, but additional activities are planned to enhance the research potential of the reserve candidates. Subsequent training will focus on developing competencies in scientific publication writing and research results presentation—key steps in successfully presenting achievements in the professional community.

The project is being implemented within the framework of the federal program "Priority 2030" and is aimed at retaining talented young people at the university after graduation.

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — American consumers will bear more than half the cost of tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump this year, according to a report from Goldman Sachs analysts.

By the end of the year, 55 percent of tariffs will be paid by American consumers, 22 percent by American businesses, 18 percent by foreign exporters, and 5 percent will not be paid at all, according to a report released Sunday.

“However, U.S. businesses are likely to bear a larger share of the costs at this time because some tariffs have only just taken effect and it takes time to raise prices for consumers and negotiate lower import prices with foreign suppliers,” the report said.

Economists say that, unlike in 2019, all tariffs have not yet been passed on to consumers because "this time, companies may wait longer" before raising prices to see if the tariffs will remain in place after the legal battle.

According to the report, taxes in the US have increased base prices of personal consumption goods by 0.44 percent this year, and inflation will rise to 3 percent by December. –0–

TEHRAN, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Monday that the recent statement by France, Germany and Britain, known as the E3, about their desire to resume nuclear talks with Iran lacks "goodwill and sincerity."

E. Bagai made the announcement at his weekly press conference, commenting on parts of a joint statement released by E3 leaders on Friday.

The EU3 leaders called their August decision to activate the snapback mechanism, which led to the reimposition of UN sanctions against Iran, "correct." They also expressed their determination to "resume negotiations with Iran and the United States to conclude a comprehensive, lasting, and verifiable agreement that will ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons."

According to E. Baghaei, Iran believes that the E3 statement “contains stereotypical statements, some of which are irrelevant and some of which lack goodwill and sincerity.”

The EU3 countries claim to be in favor of diplomacy, while they have led the diplomatic process into a dead end by "abusing" the dispute resolution mechanism provided for in the 2015 nuclear deal, an Iranian diplomat said.

He added that in order to be recognised as "credible" parties in the negotiations, the EU3 must prove its ability to act independently and possess the necessary seriousness, diplomatic potential and decision-making authority.

In August, the EU3 countries activated the snapback mechanism, leading to the reimposition of UN sanctions after the Security Council failed to extend the sanctions relief regime. Iran called the reimposition of sanctions "illegal and unjustified."
