Beijing, January 6 (Xinhua) — The 42nd Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival officially opened at the Great World of Ice and Snow Park in the provincial capital of Heilongjiang Province, northeast China, on Monday, January 5. This year's event attracted numerous guests from around the world to the "ice capital," Heilongjiang Broadcasting reported on Tuesday.
The festival, held under the motto "Icy Sky and Snowy Land – Creating the Future Together," features ten premium themed winter tourism routes and more than 200 events covering topics such as ice and snow culture, sports and physical education, and business cooperation.
At the opening ceremony of the festival, Zheng Hao, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the World Tourism Alliance, noted that the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, which has been successfully held for 41 years, has become one of the most influential winter events in the world.
According to him, the World Tourism Alliance will actively support Heilongjiang Province and Harbin City in developing international cooperation, jointly exploring market and industry opportunities, and promoting high-quality and international development of regional tourism.
Heilongjiang Province boasts abundant ice and snow resources and is a pioneer in China in the development and commercialization of the ice and snow industry. Last winter, the number of tourists and total tourism spending in the province increased by 18.5 percent and 30.7 percent, respectively, year-on-year.
Over the past 41 years, the Harbin festival, founded in 1985 and conceived as China's first international snow and ice event, has grown into one of the four largest winter shows in the world. -0-
