At Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University a cross-university examination session was held over the course of two days, initiated by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Federal State Autonomous Institution "Sociocenter".

Intensive work involving university leadership, institute directors, heads of research laboratories, faculty, and industry representatives was designed to assess the universities' implementation of development programs, highlight successful practices and problem areas, identify areas for growth, and prepare useful recommendations for the development of universities across the country.

On the second day of the cross-university assessment, participants continued working in groups on the following topics: "Management System for Achieving Technological Leadership. Development Team," "Research and Development as the Basis for Competitive Technological Solutions," "Engineering Education," and "Strategic Technological Projects."

Participants shared their visions of how to cultivate technological leaders and visionaries within the university; what needs to be changed in the approach to developing educational programs; and how to transform the entire structure of the educational institution to continue developing fundamental science and effectively collaborate with industrial partners on R&D. This candid discussion among professionals allowed them to identify the barriers and challenges the university faces in achieving its goals and objectives, both at the institutional and national levels.

"Already, about 10% of graduates have the potential to become future technology leaders, but, of course, we want to see more of them. I'd also like to highlight another important aspect: we are essentially nurturing ambassadors. Our graduates go to work for industrial partners, head departments, and then come to us as representatives of qualified clients," Marina Bolsunovskaya, Head of the Industrial Stream Data Processing Systems Laboratory at the St. Petersburg Polytechnical School, noted during her speech.

Participants at the event noted that industries struggle to share their knowledge and technologies with each other, and perhaps the university could contribute to overcoming this national challenge.

"The cross-university review is a significant event for the university, the participants of the Priority 2030 program, and the entire higher education system. For us, it's not only an independent assessment of our strategy but also a tool for professional dialogue that helps strengthen our scientific and educational potential and chart a sustainable development path. I am confident that the review's results will serve as an important benchmark for further transformations and will help us more effectively integrate education, science, and innovation. The Polytechnic University traditionally serves as a platform for the open exchange of opinions and the joint search for solutions, and this review confirms our commitment to development and cooperation. The solutions proposed following the cross-university review were evaluated by experts from the Federal State Autonomous Institution "Sociocenter," members of the expert group under the Council for the Support of Development Programs, and representatives of industrial partners—Tsentrotekh-Engineering LLC (Rosatom State Corporation), Power Machines JSC, and others.

"It's crucial that, as part of the cross-university review, we were able to conduct a professional discussion without regard to rank or title, where each specialist could express their opinion, even if it differed, to the vice-rector or director of the institute. This allowed us to truly uncover and assess the challenges facing the university and, accordingly, propose the most effective solutions," noted Dmitry Shabalkin, an expert at the Sociocenter.

The cross-university assessment is an annual event that will be held at all universities participating in the Priority 2030 program.

Defense Day at the Growth Point

The "Growth Point" space at SPbGASU hosted the presentation of student startup concepts, which are being developed as part of the "Startup as a Diploma" program.

Nineteen teams presented their ideas in the areas of construction technologies, digital solutions, and engineering services. The projects were distinguished by their practical focus, relevance, and creative approach to solving industry challenges.

The projects presented included: "Code.ak" – a platform for student IT solutions (authors Andrey Kornyushin, Kirill Fershtadt, and Vadim Koptsov); "maps4people" – a cross-platform web application for intelligent navigation inside buildings and complexes (Kirill Tishunin, Danila Luttsev); a biometric control system for occupational safety (Natalya Chernyakova, Veronika Mikhelson, Alexandra Kolesova, Sofia Myagkaya); "PARAMETERS" – an automated calculation of development parameters according to urban planning regulations (Sergey Popov); an AI assistant for construction optimization (Nikita Kashcheev, Ksenia Pisareva); a digital platform for the rental and sale of construction machinery and equipment (Alexey Titavnin, Bogdan Yakovenko), and others.

The students' work was evaluated by experts—faculty and industry partners of the university. They noted the high level of preparation of the participants and the practical significance of the ideas presented.

Ekaterina Abolina, Director of the Center for Student Entrepreneurship and Careers at SPbGASU, noted the growing student interest in the program: "Last year, 13 teams participated, and this year, 19. Every year, more and more students are showing initiative and striving to realize their ideas as startups. This is a good indicator that the entrepreneurial environment at the university is developing and becoming more active."

During the seminar

On October 30, the traditional fifth All-Russian (national) scientific seminar "Technical Support for Accessibility of Arctic Regions" was held at St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

For ten years, the seminar has been attracting the attention of the scientific community to addressing the challenges arising in the development of Russia's Arctic zone. Priority issues include developing Arctic transport infrastructure, ensuring the efficient operation of ground-based transport and technological vehicles in extreme low-temperature conditions, and the growing environmental and conservation challenges posed by human activity.

The seminar was organized by the Department of Ground Transport and Technological Machines (GTM) of the Faculty of Automobile and Highway Engineering. Representatives from scientific schools in Khabarovsk, Arkhangelsk, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Tula, and St. Petersburg participated. Participants' presentations included information on the practical application of research results aimed at creating technological machines with electric power plants; acoustic and vibration diagnostic systems for quickly determining the operating condition of equipment; and solutions to the problem of solid waste management in the Arctic and the resulting challenges in interacting with the fragile ecosystem and biosystem of the North.

The discussion touched upon the search for new, effective technologies for servicing utility lines and maintaining roads in a safe working surface condition.

More than 150 specialists participated in the seminar, which was held in person and online, and over 40 papers were presented. It was noted that the exchange of experience and research results, as well as the search for new technical solutions, materials, operating principles, and organizational solutions, will ensure the achievement of the main objective: increasing the accessibility of the Arctic regions.

"Ignite Knowledge": Polytechnic University first-year students explored the university's history through a game.

The annual history competition "Ignite Knowledge" has concluded at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, becoming one of the highlights of the freshman orientation program. The project helps students learn about the university's history through engaging activities, game elements, and digital technologies—one of their first experiences with the Polytechnic's long-standing traditions and corporate culture.

This year, the competition was held in an updated format, using a mobile app, which made participation more interactive and engaging. Thanks to the project's victory in the Rosmolodezh grant competition, the SPbPU History Museum team was able to integrate modern technologies into the educational and outreach process.

2025 was a landmark year for the competition. For the first time in three years, 924 applications were submitted—a record for the project's history. Over the course of a week, first-year students completed tasks related to key historical events, famous alumni, and Polytechnic University traditions, and also learned about the activities of student societies and associations.

Tatyana Novitskaya, Deputy Director of the SPbPU History Museum, noted: "The 'Light Up Knowledge' competition is not an exam or a knowledge test, but an opportunity for first-year students to experience the spirit of the university. Through play and research, students discover the traditions of the Polytechnic University and begin to feel part of its great history. We see how this format engages, inspires, and helps foster a sense of belonging to the university community."

In 2025, special attention was paid to the development of student self-government and student associations. The competition assignments focused on the history of the SPbPU Trade Union, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, as well as the Adapters public institute, the Polytechnic University student groups, and other active communities.

Participants researched archival materials, completed assignments in historical locations on campus, created photo reports, participated in themed quests, and shared their experiences on social media. This approach brought students together and made the process of learning history truly vibrant and contemporary.

The competition concluded with a gala meeting in the Polytechnic Tower, where the results were announced. The 200 most active participants received commemorative gifts. The project combines tradition and technology, preserving historical memory while simultaneously developing new approaches to educational outreach to students.

Historical Memory: Polytechnic University and RAU Strengthen Ties in the Humanities

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University continues to actively develop international scientific partnerships. The Russian-Armenian University successfully hosted the international scientific and theoretical conference "Images of the Past: Representations, Historiography, and Historical Memory." The Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and SPbPU co-organized this large-scale forum.

The conference brought together leading scholars—historians, cultural scientists, philosophers, and political scientists—to discuss pressing issues in contemporary scholarship. Participants focused on the role of historical memory and historical research in shaping national identity, the representation of the past in educational literature, and the fight against the falsification of history.

Furthermore, research teams from SPbPU's HSE and RAU have agreed to prepare and publish joint articles in Scopus-indexed journals. A new joint project to create a scientific electronic journal, Perspectiva Temporis, dedicated to history, sociology, and cultural studies, will begin in January 2026.

The conference and the agreements reached were a clear demonstration of the dynamically developing partnership between the Polytechnic University and the Russian-Armenian University. Polytechnicians are winners and runners-up of the competition for the preservation of cultural heritage sites

The results of the "Preservation with Adaptation 2024-2025" competition were announced at the Nevsky Town Hall in St. Petersburg. Seven student teams from the Civil Engineering Institute of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University won prizes in three categories. The competition was organized by the Committee for State Control, Use, and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of St. Petersburg, the Union of Restorers of St. Petersburg, the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of St. Petersburg, the St. Petersburg City Department of Inventory and Valuation of Real and Movable Property, and the St. Petersburg Investment Management.

The ISI faculty were also recognized for their contributions to the project preparation and competition organization. Marina Petrochenko, Director of the Institute of Civil Engineering, received a commendation from Alexander Belsky, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, for organizing the work of students from various specialties at the Institute of Civil Engineering of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. From October 7 to 28, the annual VIII All-Russian Online Financial Literacy Test, organized by the Central Bank of Russia, was held across the country. The People's University Theatre "Glagol" of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University took part in the III International Student Festival-Competition of Performances "Point A".

In the heart of Moscow, on the stage of the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute, the Glagol Theatre Company presented the play "Second Lieutenant Kizhe," based on Yuri Tynyanov's novella of the same name. For the St. Petersburg Polytechnicians, participating in "Tochka A" was an opportunity to share their unique take on a well-known classic with the capital's audience.

"This is a wonderful, and in many ways lost, literary Russian language. The author's text is performed alongside the characters' direct speech. The story is based on a true story from Russian history during the reign of Paul I, brought to the stage in the form of absurdity and paradox," notes the theater's artistic director, Konstantin Gershov.

This production, which first premiered in 1994 and recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, featured students and graduates of the Polytechnic University.

"The play has been running at our theater for 30 years. But we've given it a modern interpretation," shared actress and 2024 Humanities Institute graduate Sofia Asmolova. "It was very scary to perform in front of an unfamiliar audience, in an unfamiliar auditorium, but we were very warmly received by the audience."

The awards ceremony took place in the VGIK concert hall. "Glagol," a festival finalist and one of the five best amateur student theater groups in Russia, received a diploma and gifts. At the gala concert, which featured 15 of the best multi-genre performances from participating universities, "Glagol" presented a presentation of the theater of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and its own repertoire.
