On September 1, 2025, a ceremonial assembly dedicated to Knowledge Day and the beginning of the academic year was held at the State University of Management.

This year, September 1st was celebrated under the slogan “Creators of Tomorrow,” because future leaders, government officials, top managers, innovators in business and science study at the State University of Management, who are destined to change life in Russia for the better.

On the eve of the event, on the last day of summer, a meeting of first-year students was held at the State University of Management, so they had already managed to get used to their new place of study and did not get lost, but were nevertheless accompanied by attentive curators.

According to tradition, the official part of the celebration began with the Russian anthem, a parade with the flags of all the institutes of the State University of Management and a welcoming speech by the rector Vladimir Stroyev, who noted that the first-year students were lucky to get into the university, which has graduated many famous statesmen and major entrepreneurs over its more than 100-year history.

"If you have the attitude to become successful, then you will receive a quality education here, because our university has the best teaching staff in Russia in the areas of management, economics, marketing. I am sure that you will remember these years for the rest of your life. Maybe someone will find their true love and families will be formed. We welcome this. Many student families of past decades still delight us with their visits. There is nothing more reliable than meeting during student time. I wish you not only to receive all the knowledge that is available to you at the State University of Management, but also to actively participate in the life of the university. As future leaders, this will be very useful for you. Later, you will understand that student years are the happiest time in life. In the meantime, I am glad to welcome you to the family of the State University of Management!" Vladimir Stroev congratulated the students.

The students were also addressed by honorary guests and graduates of the State University of Management.

The head of the Federal Treasury of the Russian Federation, Roman Artyukhin, distinguished himself with a beautiful speech about the name of the State University of Management, in which every word is beautiful.

"Management is the right to lead. You need to manage wisely. And you need to manage not others, but first of all yourself. Manage your knowledge and become better every day than yesterday. By managing yourself, you become able to manage others. The university is a universe. During your studies, the entire universe opens up to you. There are no unnecessary subjects here. Industry disciplines are important, no doubt. Philosophy gives a large-scale view of the world around us, it cannot be neglected. And of course, accounting. Without accounting, there will be no professional economist or financier. Not the most difficult discipline, but fundamental. State. What are you? State. This should apply to each of us. We must be patriotic, loving our native country and the people around us, doing everything for the prosperity of Russia. I wish you all success, inspiration, and joy in your studies," Roman Artyukhin concluded his speech.

Director of the Department of Personnel Policy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia Alexey Svistunov heartily congratulated first-year students on their first day of study within the walls of the university.

"I remember my first days as a student. I always went to school with joy, everything was interesting. The contrast with school was noticeable, where not everything was interesting. And at the university, we study with great pleasure, because we go where our soul calls. But the university is not only about studying. You will also have sports competitions, volunteer activities, KVN, which GUU is famous for. And of course, romance – student families. This is a rich extracurricular life, which will also absorb you. Indeed, a whole universe. I congratulate you on the beginning of this wonderful stage of life," Alexey Svistunov shared his memories.

The Executive Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Sergei Pospelov, also recalled the past, but not so distant.

"A couple of months ago, we presented diplomas to graduates at this very place. And their faces were sadder, and I congratulate you on that. I wish you to maintain this enthusiasm throughout your entire studies. As a teacher, I would like to advise you to be honest with yourself, from the first year until the very last day of study. Moreover, in the world of digital technologies, everything you have written, done or said stays with you forever. I congratulate you on becoming members of the large GUU family and wish you success!" said the Executive Secretary of the CSTO PA.

The head of the regional interaction department of the “Movement of the First” Olga Negrova admitted that she always returns to the walls of the State University of Management with great joy.

"Allow me to congratulate you on receiving the status of a student on behalf of the Chairman of the Board of the "Movement of the First", Hero of the Russian Federation Artur Orlov, and wish you that the path that you have chosen for yourself today will definitely be the right one. And that your student years will become special. Do not forget that you live in a time of incredible opportunities. Russia is a country of opportunities, and you are part of these opportunities. Happy holiday!" Olga Negrova congratulated the students.

The guests' speeches ended there, but the congratulations did not. The Chairperson of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Liliya Gumerova sent an official letter to the workforce and students of the State University of Management, in which she also noted the romance of student life and thanked the university for its great work in supporting young families. The full text of the letter can be found in the photo gallery.

At the end of the ceremonial assembly, the newly minted students took the freshman oath and received a symbolic pass to the territory of the State University of Management from Vladimir Stroyev. The rector also presented a gift from the university's partner, Sberbank, to the best freshman, Alisa Tsibulkina, who scored 300 points on the Unified State Exam and entered the Institute of Personnel Management, Social and Business Communications.

This was the end of the celebration. The first-year students still had a tour of the State University of Management and meetings with the directors of the institutes, and the rest of the students went to the first lectures of the new academic year.

Once again, we congratulate everyone on Knowledge Day! May the entire school year be as warm and soulful as September 1st.

On September 1, the White Hall hosted a traditional meeting between SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy and the staff, dedicated to the beginning of the new academic year.

The ceremony was also attended by distinguished guests: Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Nikolay Linchenko, Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Mikhail Amosov, Head of the Administration of the Kalininsky District Mikhail Astashkevich, Director and Chief Designer of the Central Research and Experimental Design Institute of Robotics and Technical Cybernetics Alexander Lopota, Senior Vice President of VTB Bank Yuri Levchenko, Head of the Development Department of VTB Bank Sergey Zhdanov.

“I am glad to welcome you today, to congratulate you on the beginning of the school year, on the first of September on behalf of the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Dmitrievich Beglov and on my own behalf. Happy holiday, dear friends!” Vice-Governor Nikolai Linchenko addressed the Polytechnic students. “We are trying to develop, including pre-university education, and to fill our schools with specialized classes that will allow children to decide on their future specialty while still in school. By entering the renowned Polytechnic Institute, students receive a high-level education, including applied education. Today, you have orders for trial batches for production in almost all areas. I would like to express special gratitude to the faculty for your professionalism, your skills, and most importantly, your patience. I bow deeply to you. With all my heart, I wish you good health, new discoveries, new events, grateful pupils and students. Good luck. Happy Knowledge Day!”

Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Mikhail Amosov read out a welcoming address from the Chairman of the Legislative Assembly Alexander Belsky and said a few words on his own behalf: As a deputy elected from the territory where, among other things, the Polytechnic University is located, I consider it necessary to support it in every possible way. Moreover, several generations of my family and I myself had the honor of teaching here. Together with the city government, we will try to do everything to ensure that the Polytechnic University can develop comfortably. I understand perfectly well what an important day this is for you. It is a great pleasure to teach, to watch our students grow, to help them in this. Happy holiday, dear friends!

After that, the audience saw a film about the most important and interesting events of the 2024/2025 academic year at the Polytechnic, which remained a bright page in its history. Unfortunately, every year someone passes away. The Polytechnicians honored the memory of their departed colleagues with a minute of silence.

Then the rector of the Polytechnic University, Andrey Rudskoy, gave his annual inaugural report on the results of the past academic year and plans for the coming one.

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is a leading university in spirit. Today, it is especially important to clearly understand what this means. Ratings, popularity, media presence — all of these are important, but only indirect signs. We are POLYTECHNICIANS. This means that our work should be reflected in literally every aspect of people's lives, in almost any area of their activity, in every industry: in industry, construction, agriculture, healthcare… That is, the measure of our work is efficient high-tech machines, comfortable and safe homes, productive varieties of grain, cured diseases and saved lives. And the greater our contribution to each of these results, the more right we have to be called leaders, — noted Andrey Rudskoy.

The head of the university also emphasized that the Polytechnic is a state university, and this means, first of all, that its staff is called upon to make maximum efforts to implement the state strategy for the development of the country.

Our duty is to live up to the high status of the National Research University, a leading engineering university, and a qualified executor of key state programs. That is, this is not a special merit, but our direct responsibility — to conduct breakthrough research, develop advanced technologies, train highly qualified specialists capable of applying them, replicate the best practices of implementing these technologies in the production processes of Russian enterprises, and ultimately — create not just competitive, but best-in-class products: items, systems, and related services. The integration of science, education, and technology for industry as a concept for the development of the university, which we have been actively promoting for the last decade, is no longer an advantage in itself: for us, these are now “mandatory inputs,” and our task is to find tools to increase the effectiveness of this synergy, Andrey Rudskoy is convinced.

Developing this idea in his speech, Andrei Ivanovich analyzed how the university performs these functions, how it develops, what it has achieved and what it plans in its activities.

Polytechnic University is included in the list of universities that provide training for engineering personnel and scientific developments for technological leadership, and by March of this year, universities were instructed to develop strategies for their development. The Polytechnic University Development Strategy prepared by the working group successfully passed the examination and was approved on February 27, 2025. Based on the Strategy, the University Development Program was prepared for the period up to 2030 with a perspective up to 2036. In March, following the presentation of the Program to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, our university entered the leading group of universities participating in the Priority 2030 program and received funding in the amount of 1 billion rubles.

In accordance with the concept of achieving technological leadership in Russia through the unification of efforts of the state, business and universities to create joint projects, the Polytechnic University concentrates its efforts on three key scientific and technological areas (KST) and the transformation of engineering education:

KNTN-1 "System Digital Engineering"; KNTN-2 "New Materials, Technologies, Production"; KNTN-3 "Artificial Intelligence for Solving Cross-Industry Problems"; Transformation of Engineering Education

21 projects were approved within the framework of key areas, and all of them correspond to the priority areas of scientific and technological development of the country. Also, based on the results of the competition, 42 educational projects were selected aimed at creating new formats for employers' participation in the updated model of engineering education; integrating additional professional programs and blue-collar jobs into basic educational programs; implementing network educational programs; developing and implementing additional professional education programs for participants and veterans of the Secondary Military Educational Institutions; developing massive online courses and solving other pressing issues.

The first results of the new projects have already appeared. The team of our Advanced Engineering School won the Russian championship in ultralight aviation on an improved aircraft, which was modified within the framework of the Priority-2030 program.

The multi-material printing unit has been improved and pilot samples of combustion chambers for micro-jet engines have been manufactured; documentation for serial production of hot gas-turbine engine parts has been approved. Laser cladding technologies have been implemented for highly efficient repair of critically loaded parts in power engineering.

Speaking about the university's scientific activities, Andrey Rudskoy cited data on key indicators for 2024 and interim results for 2025. The first and very important indicator is the effectiveness of the postgraduate program. Today, almost 1,200 postgraduate students are studying. In 2024–2025, almost 200 theses were defended. This year, the university entered a pilot project to create an industrial postgraduate program.

The most important indicator of the practice-oriented nature of scientific work is the total volume of cash receipts from R & D and the provision of scientific and technological services. In 2024, this figure at the Polytechnic exceeded four billion rubles, and at the current moment of this year, the volume of cash receipts from R & D is three billion rubles. This means that the research and development of Polytechnicians is needed by industry, is in demand by the real sector of the economy and contributes to achieving scientific and technological leadership of the country.

Despite all the achievements of scientific thought, the main activity of the university remains education. Andrey Rudskoy noted that this year the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University continues to be in demand among applicants – more than 200,000 applications for admission have been received.

It is very pleasing that applicants are showing renewed interest in engineering fields, and the passing score for them has increased. There is a significant increase in the number of SVO participants and children enrolled under a separate quota: our university ranks fifth in Russia in terms of the number of applicants of this category enrolled. And not only these figures are important here, but also the subsequent support of such students throughout the entire period of study, – said Andrey Rudskoy.

Andrey Rudskoy focused on the transformation of the national higher education system.

We are moving away from the Bologna system, changing requirements, accents and approaches. The university is expected not only to provide quality training, but also to be a driver of the country's development, a generator of ideas, a partner of industry, a leader in the international academic agenda. Six universities in the country are testing a new system of higher education as part of a pilot project, Polytechnic University will be in the second stage, and we have serious work ahead of us, – the rector said.

Moving on to the international activities of the university, Andrey Ivanovich noted that, despite the general decline in applications due to the geopolitical situation, the admission of foreign applicants is expected to be almost at the level of last year. This is facilitated by the active work of our university's international services to promote education at the Polytechnic abroad. The total number of foreign citizens at the Polytechnic is about 8,000 people from 77 countries.

The largest project for the Polytechnic University was the national project for the development of Slavic universities. On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Science, SPbPU supervises four universities in Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. In addition, the Polytechnic University continues to coordinate the activities of the Russian-African Network University.

In his report, Andrey Rudskoy covered in detail the transformation in the sphere of youth policy at the university, associated with an increased emphasis on strengthening traditional spiritual and moral values, raising a patriotic and socially responsible individual, and expanding the range of opportunities for self-realization and development for each polytechnic student.

The head of the university also spoke about the development of the university’s infrastructure both at present and in the future, the renewal of the material and technical base, the renovation of laboratories, classrooms, dormitories, recreation centers, and the opening of new points of attraction, such as the Mineralogy Museum.

The rector also touched upon the issues of developing the corporate information system "My Polytechnic", expanding opportunities for the growth and development of polytechnics, and revealing their talents. And he called on polytechnics not to be modest, to talk more actively about their successes and achievements, as this forms the image of the entire university – strong, modern, open.

The university's media activities are confirmed by high professional assessments: for the second year in a row, the university has become a laureate of the national award "For Loyalty to Science" in the nomination "Scientific Press Service of the Year"; it is among the top universities in the media rating of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. And thanks to the support of St. Petersburg residents, Polytechnic University has been recognized as the best university in St. Petersburg for the third time.

Every success, initiative or event is a potential contribution to strengthening the university's image as one of the leading universities in the country, as well as promoting the personal brand of a scientist, teacher and employee as a polytechnician and a highly qualified specialist. I urge the departments, all of you, colleagues, to actively engage in information work, Andrey Rudskoy addressed his colleagues.

The rector also focused on the financial activities of the university, specifically highlighting the work of the Endowment Fund, which has grown this year to 127 million rubles.

And in conclusion of the report, Andrey Rudskoy spoke about the outstanding people who became honorary doctors and honorary professors of SPbPU last academic year.

In conclusion of his speech, Andrey Rudskoy sincerely thanked the entire Polytechnic staff for their professionalism, dedication and conscientious work.

Dear colleagues! Today, a new academic year begins, which brings not only challenges, but also opportunities. Everything we do, we do for the sake of the future — our country, our science, our youth. Let every day of your work at the Polytechnic be a step forward. We are one team, and together we can do a lot. We have proven this more than once, and, of course, we will prove it more than once, — Andrey Rudskoy summed up.

The culmination of the meeting was the awarding of the best employees of the Polytechnic University for their conscientious work and high achievements. The first to be invited to the stage was the Honored Master of Sports, assistant of the Higher School of Sports Education of the Institute of Physical Education, Sports and Tourism Kirill Prigoda. World, European and Russian swimming champion, record holder, Honored Master of Sports Kirill Prigoda already has among his numerous awards the SPbPU badge of distinction "For Merit", but after his recent triumph at the World Championships in Singapore, the Polytechnic University once again expressed its gratitude to its graduate for his outstanding sports achievements, enhancing the image and prestige of the university. Kirill received the University's Gratitude, a memorable gift and, of course, a standing ovation from the audience.

Those were also rewarded with warm applause polytechnics, who on this solemn day received from the hands of the rector Andrei Rudskoy the insignia “For Merit”.

Adapters are always ready to help

On August 30, the University held a Freshman Day: our new students gathered to hear good wishes and get the necessary information. They were given student cards.

Deans, deputy deans, and employees of the university's structural divisions addressed the first-year students. Outstanding graduates and representatives of partner companies were guests of the celebration.

Vladimir Sharmanov, Head of the Product and Methodology Department of the Innovation Directorate of Etalon Group, congratulated first-year students of the construction faculty on the beginning of a new stage in their lives. “Today, construction is a synthesis of innovations, digital technologies and sustainable development. You will not just erect buildings – you will be able to design smart cities, implement TIM technologies, use eco-friendly materials and change the world for the better. Within the walls of the university, you will not only receive fundamental knowledge, but also modern educational approaches with the study of robotics, the use of VR simulators and other digital technologies. Believe in yourself, do not be afraid to experiment and remember: your ideas will definitely become reality. We wish you bright projects, bold decisions and confidence in your abilities! Forward to new heights!” he said.

Oleg Fyodorov, Deputy Dean for Career Guidance, spoke to first-year students of the Faculty of Architecture about building a career: “I want you to know from the very first days: your teachers, department heads, dean’s office staff, and university management care about your future. The university and the Faculty of Architecture carry out systematic career guidance work so that you become as successful, as in-demand, and as professional as possible. The work is carried out in three main areas. The first is summer industrial practice, which begins after the fourth year. Students of the Faculty of Architecture of SPbGASU get summer practice in the best architectural studios not only in St. Petersburg, but throughout Russia. The dean’s office also receives requests from Moscow to recommend students for practical training with the prospect of employment. If students from other cities have plans to create in their small homeland, they will definitely be helped.

The second area of career guidance work is competitions. The faculty supports students' desire to participate in architectural and design competitions. This can become a significant component of the portfolio, which should be formed from the very first years of study.

The third area is assistance in employment. Despite the fact that the educational process is very intensive, some manage to start professional creative work already in their senior years. For the rest, after graduation, we are always ready to help with recommendations and selection of vacancies, we even have a separate division – the Center for Student Entrepreneurship and Career."

The topical issue of scholarships was raised by Daria Boytsova, Deputy Dean for Educational Work, Associate Professor of the Department of Architectural Design: “SPbGASU has a whole system of scholarship and material support for students. Now first-year students who study on a budgetary basis will be assigned a state academic scholarship. It will be paid after successful completion of the midterm assessment. There is also an opportunity to receive an increased state academic scholarship – it is assigned to students of the budgetary form of education for achievements in academic, scientific, research, social, cultural, creative and sports activities. Certain categories of citizens can receive a state social scholarship in the usual and increased amount. In addition, there are personal scholarships of the Government of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, the President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation and others.

In September, the application process for the “First-Year Grant” competition will begin. First-year full-time students of all bachelor’s and specialist’s degree programs who are receiving higher education for the first time can participate in it.”

Darya Vladimirovna invited first-year students to participate in grant events and other federal projects, trips, exchange programs with foreign countries; informed about the work of the psychological support service for students and trainings of the Center for Psychological Support for Students, which help to cope with everyday problems.

Anastasia Fedakova, acting chairperson of the student council and winner of the grant competition "Rosmolodezh. Grants", spoke about what SPbGASU students live by. Anastasia is sure that SPbGASU is the best place to study. Student council projects will help you find friends, learn something new, and discover your talents. The main thing is to remember to maintain a balance between your studies and hobbies.

Congratulations to our first-year students on the start of their student life!

In the main academic building of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, after the completion of renovation work, the legendary large physics auditorium has reopened its doors.

The repairs were paid for from income received from managing the Polytechnic's development endowment and cost five million rubles. This is the largest project Endowment fund of SPbPU throughout its entire existence.

The decision to restore the historic auditorium was made following the results of a competition of infrastructure projects announced by the Endowment Fund Board in December 2024. The initiative was timed to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the Polytechnic University. The commission for the distribution of income from the management of the fund's endowment capital received 12 projects. Having assessed each of them, the commission gave preference to the renovation of the large physical auditorium of the Main Academic Building.

The funds allocated by the foundation were used to restore the tables and floor, and install new special blinds. The renovated auditorium became a gift to teachers and students for the beginning of the new academic year.

The first meeting of the Physics Department after the renovation began with a formal part. Elena Vinogradova, Chair of the Foundation Board and Director of the Department of Economics and Finance of SPbPU, said a few welcoming words: We are very glad that over the 13 years of our Endowment Fund's existence, we were able to do such an important thing – finance the renovation of the auditorium, which is the face of the Polytechnic University. I hope that we will continue this tradition, and the Foundation's activities will be even more noticeable in supporting students, teachers and the material and technical base of the university.

This 400-seat amphitheater auditorium occupies a special place in the history of the university. Outstanding scientists once gave lectures here: V. V. Skobeltsyn, A. F. Ioffe, P. L. Kapitsa, N. N. Semenov, A. A. Fridman, Yu. B. Khariton, A. I. Alikhanov, B. P. Konstantinov and many others. In the early years of the institute, students from all faculties gathered here weekly to listen to lectures on physics.

Olga Novikova, Executive Director of the SPbPU Endowment Fund, gave a presentation on the history of the foundation and the mechanism of its operation. She said that over the past 13 years, formed seven target capitals, three of which are university-wide and four are for specific areas. The total volume of the SPbPU target capital fund in June of this year exceeded 126 million rubles.

Concluding the formal part, the director of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics Pavel Zakharov called the large physics auditorium “image-building” and once again thanked everyone who took part in the project.

"Carrying out repairs in a historical building is a huge task associated with lengthy approvals," he noted. "Many people have made efforts here, so on behalf of the institute I would like to express my deep gratitude, colleagues, for having managed to do this. This is such a good start to the new academic year."

NSU School of Curators: A Look from the Inside

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

At the end of August, NSU hosted the School of Curators, a training where students learn to be real mentors for first-year students. Here, future curators get acquainted with the tasks and challenges that await them ahead. We talked to Grigory Polivkin, the organizer of the School, about what it means to be a curator and what the school program consists of.

The school's goal was to introduce and involve the most active students in the "business" of curating. The challenges were the project topics that the newly arrived participants had to develop using the skills and experience they already had.

In order to teach curators to interact with a wide variety of people and cope with any critical situations, the school conducts psychological training.

— They analyze various cases and give psychological tasks like "hedgehog cut". Team board games are also important, where the outcome of the game depends on everyone. And, of course, these are projects in which guys from different faculties analyze various topics, bringing their unique experience, — says Grigory Polivkin.

The main channel of communication for the guys for quick questions and support is the curator chat. Also, once every one or two weeks, meetings are held at which all the curators of the faculty or institute meet with the coordinator to discuss difficult tasks and find joint solutions. In addition, there is a mentoring system, thanks to which a senior and experienced curator can supervise a newcomer, and joint informal meetings to unite the curatorial corps itself.

As in any business, new curators make a number of common mistakes in one way or another: they often try to be “perfect”, solve all problems alone, or, on the contrary, fall into familiarity. Other mistakes include paying attention only to active students or ignoring feedback.

— It is important to remember: a curator is not a superhero. You need to be able to delegate issues to specialists and be attentive to everyone in the group, — Grigory shares his experience.

The main tool for assessing the work of curators is anonymous student surveys, which ask not only "do you like the curator?", but also "how comfortable are you in the group?", "do you know where to go with a problem?". Reporting on events, analysis of group activity and reflection of the curators themselves are also taken into account.

Grigory is particularly inspired by the history of the Geological and Geophysical Faculty: at first they did not take curatorship seriously, but eventually created an entire official community with its own charter, rules, and system of senior and junior curators. This shows that even skepticism can be turned into strength if you work together.

“The ideal curator is not a teacher or a supervisor, but an older friend, mentor and integrator,” notes Grigory.

It is important not only to be close to a first-year student, but also to be able to hear him, support him, and guide him.

“It’s important not to sit around waiting for problems to arise, but to create an environment where it’s difficult for them to arise. Organize events, meet new people, maintain engagement,” he adds.

Grigory also notes that it is important for a curator to be empathetic and sincere, to be able to take responsibility for others and to be reliable, because a curator is the “entry point” for a student, first-year students turn to him first.

For those who only dream of becoming a curator, the organizer advises:

— Be active, don’t be shy about offering ideas, but always remember that there are rules and etiquette at NSU. Sometimes your ideas may diverge from them — it’s important to find a balance.

The NSU School of Curators is not just a training. It is a space where new leaders are born, where senior friends and mentors appear who can support you in your first steps at the university.
