'Nimble' on the move: Polytechnic students study Russia

The student conductor team "Provorny" has once again set off to explore the remote regions of our country during the work season. The polytechnicians work as conductors for the Federal Passenger Company and make trips to Moscow, Smolensk, Velikiye Luki, Anapa, Kislovodsk, Yeysk, Taganrog. They also work on the international route to Sukhum.

The season of guides is very specific. Participants and candidates are divided into small groups, on average six people, and work under the guidance of two experienced team leaders. This year, the student team "Provorny" formed five teams.

The team "Complivit Egor Vnukov" visited Smolensk. During the trip, young candidates were able to use in practice all the knowledge they had received during their training and demonstrated their skills in real conditions.

“During the long downtime, we explored the city center, visited the House of the Opposite, and looked at local attractions. We also found out who would climb the mountain faster, tried berry punch and mocha from an old machine. We held two commissariats: “Your Game” with exciting tasks and “Trend by Colors,” where each participant received their own color and created photos with it. As a souvenir of Smolensk, we took away a toy that we called Not Hehe. Now it will accompany us on every trip,” the guys shared.

Among the SPbPU brigades, one team stands out, which participates in the All-Russian Labor Project. Its goal is to improve the level of professional activity of conductors and diversify their leisure time in their free time. The VTP brigade includes ten of the most active polytechnics. The leadership was taken over by Ulyana Shtol, Egor Samokhvalov and Dima Afanasyev, who will be responsible for organizing events and coordinating the work.

"Provorny" competes with 15 teams from different regions of Russia. During the season, the guys face the following tasks: to achieve high performance indicators, including the volume of products sold and the number of hours worked, to conduct active commissar activities, to hold events for passengers. In addition, throughout the summer, many different events are held: Spartakiad, competitions for the best team corner and in the media, "Miss and Mister VTP", a creative festival and others. And in each of them, the polytechnicians will try to show maximum results.

We understand the same, but read differently: how native language affects reading in English

Researchers from the international MECO project, including specialists Center of Language and Brain HSE University has developed a tool to study English reading in speakers of more than 19 languages. In a large-scale experiment involving more than 1,200 people, scientists tracked eye movements while reading the same texts in English, and then analyzed the level of comprehension. The results showed that even with the same comprehension, the reading process – where the gaze lingers, where it returns, which words it skips – depends on the native language and level of English proficiency.Studypublished in Studies in Second Language Acquisition.

Reading in a foreign language is a complex skill, especially if the reader’s native language is very different. To find out how native language affects reading in English, scientists from 36 universities, including HSE, have teamed up in an international projectMeco, created in 2020. As part of the project, they record the eye movements of native speakers of different languages while reading texts in their native language and in English, and then analyze how fluent the reading is, where the eyes stumble, and what strategies the reader uses.

In the new wave of the MECO project, scientists added data on English reading from 660 people, collected in 16 labs in Europe, Asia, and South America. The experiment was conducted in two stages. First, participants completed behavioral tests: spelling, vocabulary, reading words and pseudowords, motivation, and nonverbal intelligence. Then they silently read 12 short texts in English from a computer screen (approximately at the level of American native-speaking students) and answered questions about their content. During this time, the participants' eye movements were recorded using the EyeLink eye tracker. The study used both new results and information collected in previous stages of the project. In total, the scientists analyzed data from more than 1,200 participants.

The results showed that most participants handled questions about the content of the texts equally well: they understood 70–75% of what they read. However, there was a large spread in the data regarding reading fluency. Native English speakers read the fastest: they had fewer fixations (gaze stops), skipped words more often, and reread less often. The German participants were the most similar to English speakers. However, native speakers of Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and other languages read less fluently and used different strategies.

Interestingly, the level of text comprehension was almost independent of eye movements: participants showed the same results when answering questions on the content regardless of their reading speed. However, fluency was highly dependent on the level of English: the better the participant coped with language tests — vocabulary, grammar, and others — the more confidently their gaze behaved: fewer rereads, more skipped words, fewer fixations.

"We now have a tool that allows us to assess English reading in 19 languages. MECO's open data allows us to compare reading in different languages, compare native speakers and language learners, and track the influence of the native language's writing system – Latin, Chinese characters, or ligature," the authors of the article say. "Over the course of several years, more than 1,200 people have taken part in the project. These data are the basis for dozens of future studies on how native language affects text perception and English reading skills."

The East is a promising business: Polytechnic and Chinese institutes on the way to new projects

A delegation from Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) and Tsinghua University Suzhou Automobile Research Institute (TSARI) arrived at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University to strengthen their strategic partnership. The visit was led by JITRI First Deputy Director Gao Jun.

China is a key partner of SPbPU: the university has more than 60 active agreements with Chinese universities and companies, including two large joint institutes in Jiangsu and Xi'an, where over a thousand students study. SPbPU itself has 2,200 Chinese students — almost half of the foreign contingent.

The meeting participants discussed the expansion of academic mobility programs. Of particular interest was the JITRI Co-op internship program, which provides paid internships at leading Chinese research institutes and companies in the following areas: new materials, information and communication technologies, energy, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. The Polytechnic University confirmed its readiness to organize an open competition among talented students and young scientists to participate in the program.

Scientific cooperation will also receive a boost: the parties agreed to intensify joint projects in the field of digital twins of power plants, artificial intelligence for industrial systems and polymer composite materials. Three major projects are already being implemented, including the BRICS grant won in sustainable development management with Nanjing University.

"Today, our laboratories are looking to the East," said Dmitry Arsenyev, Vice-Rector for International Affairs at SPbPU. "China has not only caught up with the technological leaders, but is setting new standards, and the Polytechnic University will orient students toward internships at JITRI, in your laboratories and at production facilities. This is a new vector — from the fundamental research of the Polytechnic University to Chinese industrial practice."

In response, the JITRI delegation proposed the creation of working groups to develop specific initiatives, including joint workshops and the involvement of industrial partners.

Prospects for cooperation include the participation of the Russian Academy of Sciences: SPbPU is closely connected with its St. Petersburg branch, which unites 50 research institutes. Rector of SPbPU and Chairman of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Rudskoy signed a cooperation agreement in 2023 with Director of the Shanghai branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Hu Jinbo.

"The doors of any institute of the Academy of Sciences are open to JITRI," said Dmitry Germanovich, proposing to synchronize efforts with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. To ensure prompt work, the parties plan to hold a virtual round table in the coming months.

Delegation of businessmen from Tajikistan visited the new campus of NSU

A delegation of businessmen from the Republic of Tajikistan, representing the financial and insurance sectors, visited the new campus of NSU, which is being built within the framework of the national project "Youth and Children". Thus, the deputy dean of the economics department of NSU Naimdzhon Ibragimov at one time got to the university through the PhMS. In 1981, he won the republican Olympiad in mathematics in Tajikistan, after which he was offered to enroll in the summer school at the PhMS. In 1983, he graduated from the physics and mathematics school and entered the EF NSU.

As noted by businessmen, NSU is distinguished by a high level of academic and scientific training, powerful infrastructure, as well as deep integration of science, education and innovation. Also, the trend of recent years is the strengthening of cooperation between the university and companies and enterprises from various industries.

— In Tajikistan, we are also actively developing the higher education system, but here, at NSU, we saw an example of how a university can become a center for technological and economic development in a region. NSU student creates app for recognition, digitization and analysis of classical Tibetan texts using machine learning

A system for automatic recognition and transliteration of texts in classical Tibetan, focused on old printed documents made using Tibetan syllabic writing, which goes back to the ancient Indian Brahmi script, was created by a student of the Fundamental and Applied Linguistics program working at the Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This knowledge is passed down from generation to generation in Tibet. However, over time, under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors, paper media are subject to physical destruction, which leads to the loss of priceless information and limits access to these unique materials. Currently, the Tibetan Fund of the Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences contains up to 70 thousand units of chronicles that are at risk of being lost. One of the most reliable ways to preserve and systematize historical documents is to digitize them, — said Anna Murashkina.

The young researcher set herself the task of using machine learning to build a model that would recognize Tibetan alphabet symbols from images, translate them into machine-readable form, and at the same time show greater accuracy than existing open solutions, including Tesseract.

— To do this, I manually performed linguistic markup of Tibetan text lines from the IMBT SB RAS collection. Then, taking into account the specifics of Tibetan graphics, I developed a system for assessing the quality of optical character recognition (OCR). Then I compared existing architectures and chose a convolutional neural network model, which required additional training, — explained Anna Murashkina.

She implemented additional training of the model on a marked corpus of documents, and as a result, a complete modular OCR algorithm was created, including the stages of pre-processing, segmentation, recognition and post-processing.

— For me, the value of the project is that I helped digitize an archive that stores history — documents created by people of the past who wanted to pass on their knowledge to future generations. I am glad that I am helping to transfer this knowledge through time, preserve it and make it available to a wider audience. My development will be used by employees of the Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The possibility of cooperation with the Buddhist Center for Digital Technologies, which digitizes the archives of temples and monasteries, is also being discussed. In cooperation with this organization, we will expand the possibilities of digitizing Tibetan manuscripts using open resources developed jointly with researchers from organizations in different countries, so that later everyone can touch this priceless heritage and get acquainted with the documents that are in temples and archive repositories, — said Anna Murashkina.

In the world of books and artifacts: participants of the SPbPU library forum visited a rare excursion

A library forum was recently held at the Polytechnic University "KorFor-2025"A special gift for the forum guests was a tour of rare and often closed to the general public libraries of St. Petersburg.

For example, the tour participants got acquainted with the oldest military library in Russia, which is located in the historical building of the General Staff on Palace Square. Over 210 years, the Military Historical Library of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation has collected a unique collection on military history and military art from ancient times to the present day. A special pride is the richest collection of maps of military operations for more than 200 years of history. The employees talked about their work, about new technologies used in the library, which carefully stores not only documents, but also the memory of great events in the history of our Motherland.

The history of the Scientific Library of the Russian Academy of Arts begins at the time of the founding of the Academy of Arts in 1757. The basis of the library's collection was a gift from the founder of the Academy of Arts, Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov. Currently, the library collection contains more than half a million printed publications, engravings, photographs, reproductions, illustrations, revealing the entire diversity of world artistic culture.

The excursionists walked through the unique halls of the library, learned about the history of its creation and development. And what awe and admiration were caused by the rare editions of the 15th-18th centuries, offsets, engravings, lithographs! The time spent in a warm, welcoming atmosphere flew by in an instant and left unforgettable impressions on all the excursion participants.

During the visit to the Scientific Library of the Russian Geographical Society, the specialists got acquainted with a rare collection of books, maps and documents. These materials reflect almost all expeditions in Russia and other countries that took place under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society. The reports on Arctic expeditions and the history of the discovery of the Northern Sea Route deserve special attention. The guests had the opportunity to get acquainted with rare editions of the 17th-19th centuries, representing historical and cultural significance.

Head of the library Maria Bystrova told the guests in detail about the unique collections and modern methods of cataloguing and storing valuable materials.

The librarians also got a glimpse into the inner life of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy of the Russian Orthodox Church: they walked along the rector's corridor, visited the museum and classrooms, looked into the cozy reading room and, of course, into the library, the largest in the Orthodox world. Currently, its collection contains about 315,000 books, periodicals and musical editions. The library collection contains books mainly of theological and church-historical content. The excursionists were especially impressed by the academic temple in the name of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, which houses the revered icon of the Mother of God "The Sign" of Tsarskoye Selo and other holy relics.
