NSU launches academic exchange program with Peking University

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

In August 2025, a group of students Faculty of Geology and Geophysics Novosibirsk State University (NSU GGF) took part in an internship in sedimentology, stratigraphy and paleontology organized by Peking University for the first time. The group included one foreign student – Avishka Alagiyavanna from Sri Lanka, a second-year master's student at NSU GGF. The group was led by NSU postgraduate student Margarita Luzan.

The internship lasted two weeks and took place in southwest China in Guizhou Province, known for its unique habitats of marine vertebrates that existed in the Triassic period of the Mesozoic era. These places are important for understanding the restoration of marine ecosystems and the evolution of marine reptiles after the mass extinction at the end of the Permian period. This academic year, students from Peking University will visit the NSU geological training ground "Shira" (Khakassia), where students of the NSU Faculty of Geology and Geophysics undergo geological survey practice.

NSU GGF students underwent geological practice in mixed groups with Chinese students. Each route group included 1-2 NSU students. They worked together at observation points, attended theoretical classes and prepared daily reports on their activities.

— Our internship began with studying the most ancient deposits, dating back 900 million years. We gradually moved on to younger layers. Our acquaintance with the unique geological and paleontological artifacts of China began with the museum at Peking University, which houses rich mineralogical and paleontological collections. Then we flew to Guizhou Province, where the main internship continued, including sedimentological and paleontological aspects. This province is home to two lagerstätten — unique fossil sites where, due to special conditions, not only hard parts of skeletons are well preserved, but also imprints of soft tissues of animals and plants. We studied rock sequences and observed changes in sedimentation settings, including sections with coal interlayers. It is known that coals are formed in continental conditions, and limestones formed in marine shelf conditions are found next to them. We found various traces of ancient life – brachiopods, foraminifera and mineral samples, – Margarita Luzan shared her impressions of the internship.

A highlight for NSU students was a visit to the so-called "golden nail", which serves as a reference point on the stratigraphic section and defines the lower boundary of the stage on the geochronological scale. In these sections, the boundary between geological systems is clearly visible. The students also visited the Xinyi Geopark, which contains lagerstätten, and unique finds from them are housed in museums around the world.

— In such a short time, our students have seen a great many geological artifacts, which they were shown both in museums and on specific outcrops. Now they have a clear idea of the structure of sedimentary basins that formed many hundreds of millions of years ago. This knowledge is extremely important for geologists. For our part, we can offer Chinese students an internship at our educational geological site "Shira" (Khakassia), where all the conditions for practical training and accommodation have been created. As part of mixed groups, they will be able to get a detailed idea of the structure of sedimentary basins and the formation of igneous rocks already on our territory, — noted Dean of the NSU Geological Faculty, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valery Vernikovsky.

This internship was the result of agreements on cooperation in the field of earth sciences reached during the visit of the Peking University delegation to NSU this spring. As cooperation develops, the parties will form joint research projects. The leadership of Peking University expressed interest in conducting geological internships for their students.

— In the near future, a cooperation agreement between our universities will be prepared, which will spell out all the important points. The signing of the agreement is planned for the end of this year. Such internships allow our students to get acquainted with various geological practices, which is very important for young scientists. Peking University is one of the oldest universities in China, founded in 1898. It ranks second in Chinese university rankings and is among the top 50 universities in the world. Therefore, we are interested in cooperation with this university, — noted the head of the NSU education export department, Evgeny Sagaydak.

The Tale of the Viennese Waltz: The White Hall Opened the 20th Concert Season

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The musical festival “Strauss Gala” marked the beginning of the new concert season in the White Hall – the 20th in its modern history.

You enter the assembly hall and are involuntarily surprised by its size… The hall is all white with a stucco ceiling, with huge windows in two rows, wide ceilings pouring in waves of light. Along three walls stretch choirs supported by light balustrades, – wrote the newspaper "Birzhevye Vedomosti" on October 2, 1902.

The history of the hall and the history of the university are common. The ceremonial opening of the Polytechnic Institute on October 1, 1902 took place in the White Hall. Many historical events took place there – from speeches of the country's political leaders to creative evenings of famous poets and actors. Permanent concert activity in the White Hall began 100 years later. On September 1, 2005, the hall opened after restoration with a concert by Vladimir Spivakov and the Moscow Virtuosi Orchestra.

"This performance became a kind of standard for all subsequent concerts in the White Hall," says Boris Kondin, head of the Directorate of Cultural Programs and Youth Creativity at SPbPU, who took charge of this work 20 years ago. "Since then, the White Hall has maintained an atmosphere of grandeur and is famous for unforgettable concerts of Russian and world stars, masters of culture and art."

On the opening day of the 20th season, guests of the White Hall were greeted by an exhibition of historical photographs, which showed how the hall had changed over the course of a century of its history.

The State St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra "Classica" presented the audience with a double gift – a concert in honor of the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the new history of the hall and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Strauss Jr. The Viennese "waltz king" Johann Strauss spent many years in his beloved St. Petersburg of the second half of the 19th century, leading the orchestra at the Pavlovsk Music Station and delighting the public, including the imperial family, with brilliant concerts.

And now, in our days, immortal waltzes, polkas and marches have filled the White Hall with the grace and atmosphere of a ball.

"Strauss's music is best suited to create a festive mood and open the anniversary concert season," said the orchestra's conductor, Maestro Alexander Kantorov. "I congratulate the team and the audience of the White Hall, and wish to continue to delight connoisseurs of great classics with such celebrations of music and inspiration!"

NSU opens coworking zone from 2GIS

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

At the opening, students had a unique opportunity to communicate with the 2GIS team, receive individual consultation, and also take part in a drawing of cool prizes. The new coworking area for study and relaxation is located in the NSU academic building in the 2nd block on the 2nd floor. It is equipped with a marker board, where you can write down and visualize your ideas, solve problems, and much more. This is also the first coworking space at NSU with a TV, which is available to all students – it can be used, for example, to rehearse a report.

— We looked at other areas of colleagues in your university and, of course, when creating the design project, we took into account, first of all, the needs of students: as many sockets as possible and the possibility of privacy. We added a little comfort in the form of small sitting areas, or green holes, as we call them, — shared Victoria Kostenko, 2GIS employer brand promotion specialist. Another interesting feature of the area is pillows in the form of popular emojis from the Friends on the Map app. In March of this year, the university hosted a lecture by NSU graduate, head of the 2GIS product marketing department Semyon Koltsov, who spoke about the creation of this function. With the help of Friends on the Map, you can track the location of friends and family, plan meetings in general chats and much more.

— 2GIS is a well-known company not only in Russia, but also in the world. Its head office is located in Novosibirsk, and many graduates of Novosibirsk State University work in the company. NSU and 2GIS are close friends: the company actively supports the initiatives of our university, and NSU, in turn, supports 2GIS events.

The result is a very bright and beautiful coworking space, equipped with electrical outlets, comfortable chairs and tables, as well as a recreation area, which is important. Judging by the number of students who are there all the time, they really like it, – said Svetlana Dovgal, Director of the Career Development Center (CDC) of NSU.

NSU and 2GIS have been fruitfully cooperating for a long time. The company takes an active part in the "Career Days" event organized by the NSU Career Development Center. Students have the opportunity to go on a tour of the 2GIS office by registering in advance at the Career Development Center. This fall, NSU will also host a lecture by the company's experts "Testing in IT: Modern Approaches and Career Opportunities."

International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Fascism

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Official website of the State –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Since 1962, in accordance with a UN resolution, the world has celebrated International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Fascism.

It is amazing, but 80 years after the defeat of the coalition of countries that made this inhuman ideology the basis of state policy, neo-fascism continues to exist. Humanity knows very well what this can lead to, the atrocities of the Hitler regime are recorded in documents and photographs, eyewitnesses of that era are still alive. Even despite this and the unequivocal condemnation of the world community, there are still political forces and ruling regimes that consider fascist methods of regulating public life acceptable. But the Nazis of the Third Reich did not simply unleash a war against other states, they systematically and cold-bloodedly sought to destroy the "lower" races and nationalities, without a twinge of conscience "cleansed" their own people of people with psychological illnesses or the disabled, did not spare children. Concentration camps became a terrible ulcer on the face of civilization, where the Nazis mass-exterminated those they did not like: they gassed, burned alive, starved, and conducted medical experiments.

The Soviet Union alone lost 26.6 million of its citizens during the Great Patriotic War. About half of them – 13.7 million people – were civilians and died without weapons in their hands. Of these, 7.4 million were deliberately exterminated, 2.2 million died at work in Germany, and 4.1 million died of exhaustion during the occupation. The Nazi troops, their allies and accomplices destroyed 1,710 cities and more than 70 thousand villages in our country. Statistics, behind each unit of which there is real human grief, physical and mental trauma that remained with those who survived the Nazi invasion until the end of their days. There are fewer and fewer contemporaries of those years. Now we must bear the heavy burden of memory of the victims of fascism for future generations and do everything to prevent a repetition of the history of the last century.

The State University of Management calls on us not to forget about the 60-65 million people who died due to the fault of an aggressively minded minority with an unfounded sense of superiority, which does not even recognize the right to life of people who disagree with them or who are different in appearance. Respect those around you, study history, remember the innocent victims, try not to allow the spread of radical ideas. These simple actions knock the ground out from under the feet of fascism, which is trying to rise again. Remember! Remember.

Happy Programmer's Day!

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The State University of Management congratulates all Russian coding virtuosos on their professional holiday, and first and foremost the staff and students of the Institute of Information Systems.

In the modern world, it is difficult to find other such specialists, with the results of whose work we encounter not just every day, but every hour, every minute, every second except for periods of sleep. The entire surrounding world is programmed by them, from the computers and gadgets we are looking at right now, reading this greeting, to the turnstiles in transport, which we habitually pass without any thought about their high technology.

IT specialists make our lives more interesting and easier, contribute to the development of science, medicine, transport, banking, and literally everything. People get used to good things very quickly, so today it is difficult for us to imagine our daily life without the Internet, mobile communications, online payments, digital photos, generated images, an endless playlist in headphones, electronic medical certificates, computer games, delivery services and much more. And all this is only about a small item in our pockets – a smartphone. But just 50 years ago the world was completely different, programmers changed it beyond recognition.

We congratulate the digital demiurges on the holiday and wish them to remain in demand despite the development of artificial intelligence, inventive, stress-resistant, and most importantly responsible and patriotic, because Russia desperately needs them on the path to achieving technological leadership.

Congratulations to Muscovites on City Day!

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Official website of the State –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

This year, the best city on Earth celebrates its 878th anniversary. And it is the best not only according to the lyrics of the song of the same name by Muslim Magomayev, but also according to experts in the field of urban studies. In recent years, Moscow has regularly made it to the top of national and world rankings of the most comfortable cities according to various indicators: quality of life, infrastructure development, number of museums, level of implementation of unmanned technologies. Every year it becomes more beautiful and attractive, and we congratulate it on this.

The exact age of Moscow is, of course, unknown. The most ancient archaeological finds on the city's territory date back to the Neolithic era, about 8 thousand years BC. The year of the capital's foundation is considered to be 1147, according to its first mention in chronicle sources.

Despite its antiquity, City Day was first celebrated only in 1847, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary. The holiday was held on the initiative of the Slavophiles, whom Emperor Nicholas I disliked and therefore did not support the planned three-day festivities, approving only a ceremonial prayer service and candle illumination of the center of Moscow. The holiday did not take root and was celebrated again only 100 years later, during the Soviet Union. The idea was personally approved by Joseph Stalin, so the celebrations turned out to be truly grandiose. But the anniversary passed and no special events were held in the future. Moscow's founding day began to be celebrated regularly only in 1987.

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine the beginning of September without large celebrations on large and small squares of the capital. On City Day, fairs are held, performances are staged, exhibitions and sporting events are organized, new metro stations are opened. It is impossible to list everything, as if a whole year of life is compressed into two days of concentrated emotions.

The State University of Management congratulates all Muscovites on the holiday! Our university has been intertwined with the white-stone city for more than a century, changing and growing together with it. Many graduates of the State University of Management work for the benefit of the capital in various departments, directorates and prefectures, and students do their internships there. We are proud of our golden-domed city, we love it and try to make it even more beautiful. Let the heart of Russia charge each of us with its pulsating rhythm, ennoble us with its historical appearance, delight us with night lights and unite us in the very center of the country of great opportunities. Happy holiday, Moscow!
