Polytech Hydrotower is 120: how an ancient engineering structure became the heart of student life

This summer, Polytechnic University celebrates the anniversary of one of the most beautiful buildings on campus — the famous Hydrotower, or simply the Tower, as it is now called. The ancient engineering structure, which supplied the institute with water until the mid-1950s, turned 120 years old.

There are many water towers in the world that are true architectural masterpieces. Our Hydrotower can easily be considered one of them. Its silhouette resembles either a medieval donjon or a 46-meter eastern pagoda. Despite the obvious stylistic difference from the surrounding buildings in the spirit of neoclassicism, the tower fits organically into the architectural ensemble. And everyone sees something of their own in it (that's why it is modern). Someone will think that this is a high tower in which "my joy" lives, and, for example, the guys from the student association "Engineering Alliance" are inspired by the polytechnic high-riseknightly tournaments, it looks very much like a watchtower of a medieval castle.

The night illumination of the top of the tower gives it a special charm, turning it into something like a wizard's cell.

During the Industrial Revolution, water towers became an integral part of urban infrastructure. They supplied water to factories, plants, and homes. The Polytechnic Institute, which had a vast territory with educational and residential buildings, needed a reliable water supply system. The uniqueness of the Polytechnic Tower was its dual purpose: in addition to its direct functionality, it served as a place for scientific research and hydraulic testing.

Like most of the Polytechnic buildings, the tower was designed by architects Ernst Wirrich and Iosif Padlevsky. In his memoirs, SPbPI professor Boris Menshutkin specified that the construction of the water tower and the hydraulic laboratory at it began in August 1902 and was completed three years later, in the summer of 1905.

The hydraulic laboratory was opened in an extension at the foot of the tower. Its first director was hydraulics teacher Iosif Esman. Here, students from the electromechanical, metallurgical, and shipbuilding departments tested water turbines and pumps.

In 1931, construction of a new extension to the Hydrotower was completed, housing the institute's hydraulic engineering laboratory, one of the first in the country. It was designed by employees of the hydraulics department under the supervision of Professor Nikolai Pavlovsky.

During the Great Patriotic War and the siege of Leningrad, since the tower was the dominant feature of the area, its observation deck housed a local air defense observation post. It also served as a kind of beacon, as Valery Klimov, director of the SPbPU History Museum, told the Politekhnik newspaper: In probably the year 1990, a conference dedicated to Victory Day was held at the Polytech. A participant in the Great Patriotic War spoke at it. He had never been to the Polytech before. But he said that he dreams of the hydro-tower at night, and when he wakes up, he sees it before his eyes. Why, you might ask? Because during the war he was a pilot, and there was a military airfield nearby in Sosnovka. And when he returned from battle, the main task was to see the hydro-tower. If he saw it, it meant he had crossed the front line, survived, and was landing. For him, our hydro tower became a symbol of life.

After the war, the tower returned to its original purpose – supplying water to the institute. It served this purpose until 1953.

Memorial plaques installed on the tower's façade in 1967 and 1987 serve as a reminder that outstanding Soviet scientists Academician Nikolai Nikolaevich Pavlovsky and the founder of the Department of Hydromechanical Engineering Ivan Nikolaevich Voznesensky worked here.

In many countries, water towers that have lost their original functions are recognized as architectural monuments and have found a second life, turning into museums, restaurants, hotels, business and cultural centers, and popular tourist attractions. At the Polytechnic, the tower has become the center of student life and youth technical creativity.

In 2003–2005, the Polytech Hydrotower was restored. In 2013, FabLab Polytech, a member of the global network of high-tech digital laboratories Fab Lab, opened in one of the extensions. Now it has been transformed into a student association of makers of the same name, where, as before, novice engineers learn to work on 3D printers, laser and milling machines. In another wing of the building, the Center for Patriotic Education of Youth "Rodina" appeared in December 2016. The guys, who are passionate about history, actually created an interactive museum there, a room of military glory with an exhibition of household items and equipment found in battle sites by searchers of the "Volunteer-Polytech" detachment. Activists of the military-historical club "Our Polytech" gather there today.

On October 19, 2019, the Boiling Point – Polytech was opened in the Tower – a space where lectures, trainings, strategic sessions and master classes are held.

There are so many ideas floating around in the Tower, so many interests and hobbies intersect, that in the end it became clear that it should be the location of the Center for Youth Trajectories, a structural subdivision of the SPbPU Youth Policy Department.

"We would like the Tower to be associated with creative youth work," says Andrey Dolgirev, Director of the Center for Youth Trajectories. "Our goal is to increase the number of participants in student associations and get kids involved in this environment. Many of them first come here to relax — to play table tennis or a computer console. Here they meet their peers who are involved in project activities, and they understand that they too can implement their ideas, participate in competitions, win a grant, maybe even create a startup. And we will advise them on how best to do this, and help them fill out applications."

Polytech offers many opportunities to those who want to make their dreams come true, and a significant part of these opportunities is concentrated in the Tower. Today, it is one of the most popular places in Polytech, it attracts young inventors, gathers creative and passionate people around itself. There is a fab lab and a robotics workshop, where Team Omnivores modifies combat robots, and the student design bureau "System Engineering". There is a real industrial robot – a gift from a Polytechnic graduate. The plans include creating a student media lab with photo and video equipment in the "trunk" of the Tower. And on the second floor there is a Center for Psychological Support of Students – also an important service.

The Tower is popular not only with those who are currently studying, but also with those who have already graduated from the university but remain in touch with it. Thus, twice a year there are meetings of graduates – ambassadors of the Polytechnic University. There is a special atmosphere of talent, imagination and creativity concentrated around the Tower, which is probably why university open-air celebrations such as "Beauty Day".

For all 120 years of its existence, the Tower served people, was a source and symbol of life, inspiration, scientific thought. In the anniversary year, I would like to wish this symbol and soul of the Polytechnic that people love and cherish it, and preserve it for many centuries to come.

Polytechnic University wins grant for joint project with Technological University of Havana

The SPbPU project “Development of a decision-making model for the optimal functioning of the electric power system under conditions of extreme weather events” under the supervision of Professor Vyacheslav Burlov of the Higher School of Technosphere Safety of the Civil Engineering Institute received a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation to conduct scientific research with partners from Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Polytechnic will work on the project together withTechnological University of Havana José Antonio Echeverría (CUJAE) and the Russian industrial partner, the RIO design bureau.

Scientists will analyze the scientific and technical state of the energy security system of the Republic of Cuba in order to establish a connection between power supply interruptions and the technical condition of equipment and weather conditions. Based on the results of the analysis, a list of threats to the region's power supply will be compiled, and on its basis, models of security processes and the target process of power supply will be developed. On their basis, scientists will develop an innovative intelligent decision-making model that ensures reliable and sustainable operation of electric power systems in extreme climatic conditions: during hurricanes and typhoons, in severe frost and heat.

In contrast to the existing practice of developing energy security models based on an analysis built on the assessment of accidents that have occurred, comparison of objects and forecasting possible problems in the process of their operation, a natural-scientific approach to managing the regional power supply system will allow the formation of processes with predetermined properties.

The feasibility of conducting applied research together with the Technological University of Havana is due to the fact that the task of ensuring energy security is one of the primary ones for Cuba today. In February, March, October and December 2024, the country experienced a series of power outages. This problem is also relevant for the Russian Federation. For example, on July 16, 2024, a large-scale power outage occurred in the south of Russia and the North Caucasus, caused by increased loads on the power system due to heat and a failure of generating equipment at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant.

The joint development will be a step towards the development of "smart" energy grids capable of maintaining stable power supply and increasing consumer safety. The project emphasizes the importance of transitioning to advanced technologies for designing and creating high-tech products based on the use of intelligent manufacturing solutions, robotic and high-performance computing systems, new materials and chemical compounds, results of processing large volumes of data, machine learning technologies and artificial intelligence.

This project is a vivid example of how modern science and advanced technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, can solve global challenges. Record number of Olympiad winners and 852 new students: priority stage of enrollment completed at Polytechnic University

The priority stage of enrollment for bachelor's and specialist's programs has passed at the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University. 852 first-year students can already proudly call themselves polytechnics and find themselves in the lists of those enrolled using a unique code or personal account ID. The lists are available on the website "Admission 2025".

The first main heroes of the 2025 admission campaign were the winners and prize winners of the All-Russian School Olympiad and Olympiads from the list of the Russian Council of School Olympiads, as well as applicants admitted under quotas. A record number of people have already been enrolled in the Polytechnic University and its branch based on the results of the Olympiads – 185 applicants. In addition, 292 people were enrolled under targeted admission and 375 under a special and separate quota.

I decided to apply to Polytechnic University back in the 9th grade — after participating in the Engineering League and joint programs with the Academy of Talents of St. Petersburg. This helped me understand what I wanted to do. I had no doubts when choosing a university, and the support of talented applicants this year only strengthened my choice! Taking a prize place in the Olympiad, of course, was not easy, but I prepared hard: I attended clubs, solved Olympiad tasks from previous years, participated in various hackathons and real-time programming competitions, and also completed a two-year course from Yandex Lyceum. And it was worth it — it gives confidence when applying. Even guys with high scores were not competitors for me. I am looking forward to an intense study, a sought-after profession, and a cool student community. Polytechnic University is a place where the best gather! — shared his impressions a first-year student of the Computer Security program, winner of the Gazprom industry Olympiad for schoolchildren in computer science Savva Lastochkin.

Among those admitted without exams is a graduate of the Natural Science Lyceum of SPbPU Andrey Kapustyanik. He became a prize winner of the final stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad in Technology and was among the few applicants admitted to the Polytechnic University without entrance examinations.

Akademgorodok scientist gave a lecture at the World Chemical Congress in Malaysia

The 53rd IUPAC General Assembly, together with the 50th World Chemical Congress, was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 12-19. A special feature of the congress was the allocation of a specialized section on “Artificial Intelligence in Chemistry.” Within its framework, Associate Professor of the Department of Solid State Chemistry Faculty of Natural Sciences of NSU, Senior Researcher at the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis SB RAS Anna Nartova gave an invited talk on “Artificial Neural Networks for Microscopic Data Analysis,” in which she presented the iOk online platform to the global scientific community (HTTP: //yok. HSSU.ru/), developed by scientists from Novosibirsk State University as part of the program "Priority 2030".

This platform includes a set of digital services for automatic image analysis using deep machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. Three services are freely available on the platform. Universal Telegram service No Code ML (HTTPS: //t. T.NSU_ML_VOT) is designed for classical training of neural networks on user datasets. The second service is DLgram (HTTPS: //t. TA/NANOPARITICLECLY_NSK) — is designed to recognize multiple homogeneous objects of various natures. Includes training of the neural network by the user using a marked area from the same image. Online service ParticlesNN (HTTP: // Partiklesnn.NSU.ru/) is designed for automatic recognition of nanoparticles in scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and electron microscopy (EM) images by a trained neural network. Cloud services No Code ML and DLgram provide training of a neural network on user objects, automatic recognition of objects in images and the ability to adjust the recognition results by the user. They also analyze the detected objects and determine their parameters, such as quantity, size, area and concentration. The services are able to work with various images – pictures from electron microscopes, photographs from digital cameras (including smartphones). They recognize various objects: nanoparticles, microorganisms, cells, plant seeds, as well as larger objects – animals, plants, various parts, vehicles and much more. At the same time, to work with the services, the user does not need to have any special programming skills or understand neural networks. Preliminary image processing is also not needed. The results are provided in the form of information about all detected objects, and the user can adjust them if necessary. Currently, hundreds of researchers from all over the world use the developed services. At the same time, the services are most in demand by specialists working with images obtained using various types of microscopy.

– In general, the section “Artificial intelligence in chemistry”, despite the fact that the direction only – only the beginning to form and the number of reports was inferior to other, more traditional sections, was perhaps the most popular from the audience. Among the speakers there were many representatives of Russia. Nash the lecture aroused a very great interest in the audience. A lot of listeners went to her purposefully. Such an increased interest in our online platform is due to several reasons, including the fact that we promoted it at several scientific conferences. A number of articles were published, including in high -rated scientific journals. And, I must say that our team, in which A.V. Matveev and A.G. Okunev, was one of the first in the world to present their developments in this direction. Then, single work was devoted to this topic, and we walked alone with them and at times even ahead of them. Now their avalanche is huge, but we still recorded our championship. And even more so, we were the first to offer a “platform approach” when users are offered a ready -made service, and not just a code. At the moment, we have formed our own circle of users, so we received an invitation to make a lecture at this Congress. It was very pleasant to know that our development is known not only in Russia, but also in the world. So, young scientists from China, Malaysia and other countries who were already familiar with our work came to our lecture. During the discussions, after the report, young chemists asked a lot of questions, in most cases, interested in not how neural networks are arranged, but how to use them as a finished tool, while avoiding teaching the Python programming language. They were interested in neural networks, when using which the programmer’s skill is not required. And our platform is just such a product, ”said Anna Nartova.  

The section participants separately discussed the problem of the activation barrier, which is of fundamental importance in the use of neural networks in chemistry. It is the need for confident programming skills and deep knowledge of neural networks. According to Anna Nartova, the platform approach is the optimal solution to eliminate it and make neural networks a tool for working in the laboratory. The section participants, working in different areas, also related to chemistry, noted: if a chemist needs to have a high enough level of Python to use a neural network as a tool, he will most likely not do this. The situation should be changed by using a platform approach, which is a ready-made product that does not require the scientist to delve into the code, but allows you to simply upload your data to the application, process it and get a ready result. In this case, the return on using neural networks is maximum.

— We started promoting the idea of implementing a platform approach to solving the problems of accessible use of neural networks for scientists who do not have programming skills at our university several years ago. Now it has become a widespread trend. The first works in the direction of using neural networks in processing microscopic images were aimed at solving some specific cases, and usually the machine learning model was posted in the public domain. In our case, firstly, we are talking about the universalization of the approach, and secondly, about the creation of applications or services that facilitate work with neural networks. Thus, at the same time, a more universal tool is being developed, designed not to solve any specific problem, and a user-oriented product is being created. Currently, there is a trend: scientists are interested in working with neural networks, but are not ready to use them if they are not applications, — Anna Nartova explained.

Anna Nartova noticed that an important part of the congress was the section on chemistry. This is due to the fact that the Chemistry Congress was combined with the Assembly of the Jupak, so not only purely scientific issues were considered. It is very important that it was, first of all, about teaching schoolchildren chemistry. Teachers in this subject became a problem for many countries whose representatives participated in Congress. In the profession of “teacher”, and in particular the “teacher of chemistry”, they go reluctantly: it is labor -intensive and responsible, but, unfortunately, does not belong to the highly paid. Colleagues from different countries noted, based on their own experience, that in order to attract students to this science, it is necessary to focus not on high -grade, but on students of the middle or even junior school link. Section participants shared work experience in different countries. The Indian chemist Udi Maitra made a report “Improving the perception of science/chemistry through simple experiments associated with everyday life.” This project is of deep humanitarian significance, spreading the natural science worldview, as well as increasing the motivation for education. The scientist from Taiwan Khsien Chang Cao presented the message “Chemistry on wheels”, in which he spoke of a huge personnel hunger, growing since 2017. Working on the problem of attracting personnel, scientists -enthusiasts with mini -laboratories go to provincial schools and show the children experiments with various chemicals and in exciting form tell the children about chemistry as an interesting science. Many of these guys at the end of school make a choice in her favor and return to their schools already as teachers of chemistry or become volunteers of educational projects. It is interesting that this work is supported by both the state and corporations, since they are very interested in improving the level of school education and attracting motivated teachers to the school. Anna Nartova noted that this work exactly corresponds to the concept of the project “Entertaining science for schoolchildren”, which has been implemented at NSU since 2009, and in recent years has been part of the school center of the Faculty of Physics of NSU. Partnership between SPbPU and the Multicenter: support for veterans of the SVO and involvement in solving problems of technological leadership

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University was visited by a group of veterans of the special military operation, undergoing rehabilitation and mastering new professions at the State Autonomous Non-Standard Professional Educational Institution of the Leningrad Region "Multi-Center for Social and Labor Integration".

The visit was organized by the Directorate of Continuing Education and Industry Partnership of SPbPU together with the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport for the social and labor integration of veterans of the SVO, the development of partnership and the formation of a system of continuous education aimed at solving the problems of technological leadership of the country. This work is carried out by the university, including within the framework of the federal program "Priority-2030" at the expense of internal resources allocated for the implementation of the projects "Development and implementation of additional professional education programs for participants and veterans of the SVO taking into account the regional needs of the economy" and "Organization of a system of professional counseling and individual educational trajectories for veterans of the SVO, as well as training teachers and mentors to work with the target audience."

Already during the pilot implementation, IMMiT teachers will take part in training veterans of the SVO according to an adapted advanced training program based at the Multicenter.

The guests got acquainted with the laboratories, educational and production complexes and engineering sites. The prospects for launching adapted educational programs, forming a mentoring system and professional consulting were discussed. The visit was a continuation of the university's systematic work on creating applied programs for target categories of students.

The visit also acquired special significance in the context of preparations for the conclusion of a strategic partnership agreement between Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Multicenter for Social and Labor Integration. The document has been developed and agreed upon by the parties and will be signed in the near future. The agreement will form the basis for systematic joint work. Work is already underway to create a joint educational space on the basis of the Multicenter for the implementation of training programs in the management and maintenance of numerically controlled machines.

The Polytechnic University consistently develops areas related to the training and retraining of participants and veterans of the SVO, including the launch of new programs for advanced training and professional retraining focused on the real needs of regional economies. One of the key partners in this process is the Multicenter, an institution that applies comprehensive approaches to labor rehabilitation and social support. The Multicenter provides professional training, giving veterans of the SVO the opportunity to obtain applied technical competencies and master a new profession, and the Polytechnic offers paths for further development – completing programs of secondary vocational and higher education, advanced training and professional retraining.

Such interaction between the Multicenter and SPbPU is especially significant in the field of engineering education: it allows for the development of end-to-end training trajectories – from mastering blue-collar jobs to obtaining engineering qualifications, which corresponds to the tasks of the country’s technological development.

The meeting discussed mechanisms for long-term cooperation: launching adapted programs, organizing mentoring, training teachers and tutors to work with the target audience.

Deputy Director for Educational and Industrial Work at the Multicenter for Social and Labor Integration Ekaterina Stepanova emphasized: We are grateful to the Polytechnic University for its high level of openness and attention to those who are returning to civilian life. The University demonstrates not only technological readiness, but also humanitarian involvement, which makes our partnership truly valuable. We share a systemic approach, which creates not individual courses, but an entire adapted educational space that meets the capabilities of specific people and the needs of the economy.

Cooperation with the Multicenter allows us to build practice-oriented trajectories – from professional consulting to qualification training. The first courses, developed specifically taking into account the conditions of returning to peaceful professional activity, will start in the near future. We see that the demand for such programs will only grow, especially in the context of technological leadership tasks. The enormous practical experience that the Multicenter has accumulated over the years of its activity is certainly very important and valuable for the Polytechnic University – both in methodological and organizational terms, – noted Dmitry Tikhonov, Vice-Rector for Continuing and Pre-University Education at SPbPU.

The participants of the visit – students of the Multicenter, undergoing training in a number of in-demand technical areas – highly appreciated the educational and technological base of the Polytechnic University, showed a keen interest in the engineering infrastructure of the university and the possibilities of further education.

One of the participants of the visit noted: Everything is thought out to the smallest detail: modern equipment and an attentive approach to students. It is especially valuable that here they do not just meet, but teach in-demand professions that are important for the country. The visit of the representatives of the Multicenter and veterans of the SVO became an important stage in the development of an integrated model of interaction – from social support and mentoring to engineering training and employment in industrial enterprises.

Representatives of the State University of Management visited the production facilities of Air Magistral, one of the leading Russian developers and manufacturers of innovative solutions for ensuring road safety. The company has 24 registered patents and more than 100 products with proven effectiveness in reducing road accidents.

The delegation of the State University of Management included Vice-Rector Maria Karelina, Director of the Engineering Project Management Center Vladimir Filatov, Deputy Director of the Center Dmitry Nikitin and specialist Vladimir Kutkov.

During the visit, a meeting was held with the First Deputy General Director of the AIR-Magistral Company, Alexander Makhnovsky. During the tour of the enterprise, the delegation of the State University of Management got acquainted with the full production cycle of products, including road signs, traffic lights, light signaling equipment, as well as with a special combined road machine "Ilya Muromets". The meeting participants noted the high level of automation and strict quality control at all stages of production. Of particular interest was the patented technology that allows the production of luminous road signs only 4 millimeters thick.

Triumph of Polytechnics: Kirill Prigoda and Alexander Shchegolev Win World-Class Medals

Assistant of the Higher School of Sports Education of the Institute of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism Kirill Prigoda together with Miron Lifintsev, Andrey Minakov and Egor Kornev won gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore in the 4x100m medley relay. The swimmers covered the distance in 3 minutes 26.93 seconds.

The guys not only won the first Russian gold in the history of the World Championships in this type of program, but also set a new record for the European and World Championships.

Let us recall that Kirill Prigoda also won this championship gold in the 4x100m medley relay and silver in the individual 50m breaststroke.

The "Generation Media" Project: Get Support from the Country's Leading Experts

The State University of Management invites students to take part in the “Media Generation” project, aimed at supporting talented young people who want to develop in the media field.

Following the competition, 30 finalists will be able to create their own projects under the guidance of experienced mentors, including representatives of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, chief editors of media outlets, heads of press services, Olympic champions, film producers and communications experts.

The project covers five areas:

"Science"; "Culture"; "Sport"; "History"; "Media Communications Management".

Participants will receive training from the First Media Academy Institute and practicing teachers, develop concepts for their projects and present them to the jury. The best works will receive support from mentors, and their authors will receive diplomas for completing the program.

Bloggers from different cities visited NSU under the Student Tourism program

Since 2021, the Student Tourism project has been uniting students and young people, giving them the opportunity to travel and get to know the country's leading universities. Every year, participants travel to various regions of the country – from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. Universities across Russia open the doors of their campuses to travelers, offering unique tourist programs developed on the student-to-student principle. They include popular science routes, master classes, events and much more. This contributes not only to broadening the horizons of program participants, but also to the development of scientific, historical and sports tourism.

The main point of the route was Novosibirsk State University. The blog tour participants were accommodated in the new dormitory #4/2. Over the course of two days, the children were introduced to the campus, given excursions to the NSU history museums, the Evolution of the Earth and New Archeology RECs. The children were especially interested in the excursion to the accelerator mass spectrometry laboratory, where they were explained how scientific research works are carried out. In the Startup Studio and the Demonstration Center of the Center for Information Technologies, the bloggers were shown smart developments created by university students. The Ministry of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region and the Novosibirsk Museum of Local History gave the blog tour participants a walking tour of the Akademgorodok, and the children were also shown the science town from the NSU dome, where at a height of 63 meters from the observation deck a breathtaking view of the Ob Sea, the campus and endless forests opened up. The journey ended with a PISHNIK from the Advanced Engineering School of NSU, where bloggers and students competed in volleyball and engineering games on the sand.

Kirill Zhigulin, the author of a blog dedicated to Russia and patriotism, noted the uniqueness of Novosibirsk and its potential.

— I was particularly struck by the fact that it is the youth who are building the future of Novosibirsk through science and sports. NSU demonstrates high indicators in education and scientific activity. I am sure that Novosibirsk is a unique brand of the region with huge potential, and the future here is built by young people and NSU graduates. I think more and more young people will come here not only for scientific, but also historical, sports and aviation tourism. This is a really cool and unique idea, — Kirill shared.

Karina Zakharova from Kazan, media ambassador of “Student Tourism”, spoke about her experience.

— This is my first blog tour as part of Student Tourism, although I have been actively traveling for about four years and have two blogs. Previously, I had only been to Novosibirsk in transit, and now I had the opportunity to get to know the city and the university. I was impressed by the VivaAvia festival and the NSU museums, which are truly worth attention. NSU is a university with a developed student culture, startups and great potential. Despite my attachment to my hometown, if the opportunity presented itself, I would gladly study at NSU. I want to wish everyone to travel and discover Russia through Student Tourism — it is a great budget option, — said Karina.

Georgy Favorsky, media ambassador of "Student Tourism", blogger, student of the I. Ya. Yakovlev Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical University, emphasized that he values his university very much, but NSU also impressed him very much.

— All the events were very rich and interesting. I especially liked the excursion to the museum, where they study earth rocks and you could touch all the exhibits. The atmosphere was very friendly, you could feel the real care and support from the participants and organizers of the program. Novosibirsk, as the third most populous city in Russia, really has great potential. The university has a high level of education, comparable to the leading metropolitan universities. Now I am sure that Novosibirsk is the center of Siberian civilization, and I recommend everyone who is considering moving or studying in another city to pay attention to this wonderful city and university, — added Gosha.

ISI scientists study optical properties of river water

Scientists from the Civil Engineering Institute are conducting a study aimed at studying the characteristics of water from the Neva River that are important for online monitoring of its quality. Work on the project is being conducted under the supervision of Maria Andrianova, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Hydraulic Engineering and Power Engineering of the Civil Engineering Institute. The research group also includes Ekaterina Chabina, Senior Lecturer at the ISI HSGEES, and Benjami Ishtvakh, Postgraduate Student.

The aim of the study is to analyze the variability of the optical density of water in drinking water sources, which is key to improving automatic monitoring systems (CAM) of pollutants. Modern online monitoring technologies can significantly speed up the process of water quality analysis, although their accuracy may be lower than laboratory methods. However, prompt data acquisition is critical for the effective management of water purification processes. In 2021, a GOST was adopted regulating the use of CAM, which emphasizes the need to take into account seasonal and weather phenomena when monitoring water bodies.

According to project manager Maria Andrianova, preliminary data demonstrate significant seasonal variability of optical coefficients in the ultraviolet range, exceeding the possible measurement error. This confirms the relevance of the study aimed at assessing the scale of this variability and determining the factors influencing its dynamics. Given the changes in climatic conditions and the transformation of the city's sewage system over the past decades, the project is of particular importance for modern ecology and water treatment.

The Higher School of Hydraulic and Power Engineering of the Civil Engineering Institute has a modern instrumental base for analyzing the main characteristics of water, including determining total organic carbon, individual ions, optical density spectra and fluorescence in the ultraviolet and visible ranges. Scientists plan to conduct a detailed analysis of water samples taken from the Neva and its tributaries under various weather conditions: in summer and winter, during the spring flood and autumn showers. The main objective of the study is to create a database of spectral and chemical indicators of water for the subsequent identification of patterns.

To ensure the successful implementation of the project, the participation of master's students is required. In this regard, we invite students of the Civil Engineering Institute to take an active part in the work on the project, as well as to complete final qualifying works on the research topic, – shared senior lecturer of the Higher School of Civil Engineering and Economics Ekaterina Chabina.
