Today is an important state memorial date – the Day of the Baptism of Rus. It has been officially celebrated since 2010 on the day of remembrance of the great equal-to-the-apostles Prince Vladimir, during whose reign this significant event took place.

According to the Tale of Bygone Years, Prince Vladimir was baptized in 988 in the Church of St. Basil in Korsun, also known as modern-day Chersonesos. This allowed him to enter into a dynastic marriage with Anna, the sister of the Byzantine Emperor Basil II the Bulgar Slayer.

Historically, the adoption of Christianity in Rus' was due to a number of important reasons. Moments in Summer School

In early July, students of the SPbGASU Faculty of Architecture took part in the International Summer School Smart Cities 2025 in Beijing, organized by the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA). More than 60 students and teachers from Russia, Nepal, Turkmenistan, India, Uzbekistan, Finland, Mexico, Iran, Nigeria and China united to study modern technologies in the field of construction and architecture, creating sustainable cooperation and communications.

The participants of the summer school are students of the architecture faculty who are not in their final year and who have knowledge of English, good academic performance and a desire for intercultural interaction in solving creative and educational problems. At SPbGASU, such selection was successfully completed by postgraduate student Gleb Bagayev, master's students Alexandra Rakhova and Valeria Finina (Department of Architectural and Urban Heritage), students of the Department of Architectural Design Nina Maslikova (4th year), Ksenia Borisova (3rd year), Ustiniya Petrova and Aman Tuvakov (2nd year). The group was led by Deputy Dean for Educational Work Daria Boytsova.

"The summer school's intensive program included lectures by specialists in various fields. Students learned about the advanced developments of Chinese scientists in the field of urban planning using satellite navigation and found practical applications for these technologies in the format of an intellectual test, where Ksenia Borisova took 2nd place and Ustinia Petrova took 3rd place. The school participants also studied the capabilities of 3D scanning and printing, which are actively used in the restoration and reconstruction of buildings, modern methods of geological surveys and geodetic surveys using drones and robots. Of particular interest were the latest developments in the field of production of environmentally friendly building materials, a report on which was presented by a professor at the University of Manchester, as well as the CIM (City Information Modeling) software presented by the developer company Glodon," said Daria Boytsova.

During the summer school, students also visited unique modern buildings and historical complexes in Beijing and its environs, which allowed them to get acquainted with Chinese culture. A visit to the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and the Museum of Architecture left vivid impressions. Students also studied the creations of modern architectural firms Zaha Hadid Architects and Snøhetta, the features of their use in a hot and humid climate, determined by the sustainable development strategy.

The summer school concluded with a closing ceremony, where students presented presentations on Smart Cities, developed in international teams, and received personalized certificates.

Within the framework of the 4th BRAUIC Forum, which was held on the same dates at BUCEA University, Daria Boytsova made a presentation about SPbGASU. She noted that the forum participants expressed a desire to actively participate in international scientific and creative events of our university. Events of this level strengthen international relations in the field of education and are the key to the development of cooperation. The participation of SPbGASU representatives in the BUCEA summer school has already become a tradition, which will continue in 2026.

Representatives of the State University of Management took part in a scheduled meeting of the Working Group on the legal regulation of socio-cultural adaptation and integration of migrants, refugees and forced migrants located on the territory of the Russian Federation, which was held in the State Duma.

Under the leadership of deputy Anastasia Udaltsova, those gathered considered three issues on the agenda.

Vice-Rector of the State University of Management Pavel Pavlovsky and Professor of the Department of Public Administration and Political Technologies of the State University of Management Vladimir Volokh shared their vision of the situation.

Particular attention at the meeting was paid to the discussion of the draft federal laws "On Amendments to the Federal Law "On the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens in the Russian Federation" and the Federal Law "On Migration Registration of Foreign Citizens and Stateless Persons in the Russian Federation". A report on this issue was made by a member of the Working Group, Chairman of the Commission on Labor Migration of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Russia, member of the Expert Advisory Council under the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Nikolay Kurdyumov.

The second issue discussed the problems of adaptation of refugees and forced migrants from the territory of Ukraine and liberated subjects of the Russian Federation to the conditions of Russian society. Roman Kovalenko, a member of the Working Group and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the public movement "Other Ukraine", presented his vision of the situation.

Then, Ivan Udaltsov, a member of the Working Group and executive director of the Foundation for the Support of Social, Legal and Educational Programs “Public Initiative”, made a presentation on the development of “public diplomacy” institutions in the sphere of regulating migration processes and strengthening the international position of the Russian language.

Professor of the State University of Management, member of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for Interethnic Relations Vladimir Volokh spoke on all issues on the agenda, covering in detail the current challenges and opportunities associated with migration processes, and emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach to regulating migration. He supported practice-oriented proposals aimed at improving the mechanisms of adaptation and legal regulation of the targeted organized recruitment of foreign workers, and also proposed strengthening the vector of development of "public diplomacy" institutions in the sphere of regulating migration processes and strengthening the international positions of the Russian language in the activities of the Working Group.

The discussion was also attended by members and experts of the Working Group: Chairman of the International Council of Russian Compatriots, President of the International Association of Russian-Speaking Lawyers, President of the Guild of Russian Lawyers Gasan Mirzoev; Advisor to the Rector of the Russian State Humanitarian University Alexander Bezborodov; Advisor to the Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Dmitry Fedotov, representatives of government bodies, large businesses, civil and academic communities.

The State University of Management has developed a methodology for assessing the maturity of the KVN movement in Russian universities

On July 24-27, 2025, the forum “KVN as a resource for the development of creative economies in the region” was held in the city of Kaliningrad. The organizer of the forum was the Methodological Center for the Study and Strengthening of the KVN Movement in Higher Education Institutions of the State University of Management.

Let us recall that the Methodological Center was established at the beginning of the year by a decision taken at the IV All-Russian Forum “KVN – School of Leaders” in the city of Sochi.

On July 24, a seminar-meeting for the organizers of the KVN movement from the universities of the Northwestern Federal District was held in the Youth House of Kaliningrad, where current issues of the KVN movement in the region were discussed. Colleagues exchanged experiences and set new goals for further development.

The forum demonstrated for the first time the methodology for assessing the maturity of the KVN movement in higher education institutions, developed by the Methodological Center for the Study and Strengthening of the KVN Movement. The methodology is based on three key elements: the ability to develop the KVN movement at the university, the ability to organize the correct resource provision, the university's ability to use KVN for the socio-economic development of the region, that is, to implement the third mission of the university. The forum participants decided to finalize this methodology for work along the lines of Rosmolodezh.

Dialogue without borders: SPbPU summer academy on energy has ended

The summer season of the International Academy of Power Engineering, an educational project that unites students and young researchers from Russia, Europe and Asia, has ended at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The program is held at the Institute of Power Engineering and annually brings together participants seeking an in-depth study of modern trends in the industry.

The Academy has been held since 2016 and offers educational modules in five areas: "Electric Power Engineering", "Nuclear Power Engineering", "Digital Technologies in Power Engineering", "Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development", "Turbomechanic Engineering".

In 2025, 16 international students participated in the Summer School from July 14 to 25 in person and 89 remotely. Thanks to the hybrid format, first tested during the pandemic, the geography of participants is expanding while maintaining interactivity and quality of education. All classes are held in multimedia classrooms with the ability to connect listeners from all over the world.

Among the participating universities are long-standing partners of SPbPU: Zhejiang University, Harbin Engineering University, Shandong University, Tsinghua University, Beihang University (all in China) and the University of Padua (Italy). Students of the Polytechnic University itself also joined the academy.

Today, an engineer must think globally: understand the international agenda, understand new technologies, and be able to work in multinational teams. That is why we included our students in the program – to give them the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in the global energy dialogue, – said the head of the summer academy program, associate professor of HSE Ekaterina Sokolova.

The students were particularly interested in the master class "Virtual NPP power unit: application of a virtual power unit for modeling NPP operating modes", where the participants modeled the operating modes of a nuclear power plant using digital twins. Practical cases on creating models on MATLAB/Simulink and Comsol Multiphysics allowed them to acquire the skills in demand in the digital transformation of the industry.

Each educational module consists of several lectures and seminars that provide fundamental knowledge in the energy sector and reflect modern challenges: students study the use of AI in nuclear energy, digitalization, sustainability of energy systems and modern equipment, and renewable technologies of the future.

The Academy concluded for the second time with an Energy Forum, where students presented their research on various topics and exchanged ideas that could develop into international research, articles and joint grant initiatives.

The educational part was complemented by a diverse cultural program: excursions to the State Hermitage, the Yusupov Palace, walks along rivers and canals, interactive tasks and master classes in the Russian language. Digital excursions around St. Petersburg were prepared for online participants.

We do not just teach, we create an environment for academic exchange and intercultural dialogue. The program becomes more complex every year, because the requirements grow, and with them our interest in future collaborations. We hope to get in touch with universities that are new to us, which may also be interested in such a program, – shared Ekaterina Sokolova.

In the future, the organizers plan to add more practical laboratory classes, joint project blocks, and expand the range of topics through new partnerships with industrial and research centers.

Exhibitions, festivals and reconstructions: how July went at Our Polytechnic

July was a busy month for the military-historical club "Nash Polytech", which took part in several significant events. A special place in the series of events was occupied by a unique exhibition at the Concern "Sea Underwater Weapons – Gidropribor" and festivals.

The Marine Underwater Weapons — Gidropribor Concern is hosting the exhibition Torpedo Plant No. 181 in the Blockade and at the Front. The attention of visitors is drawn, among other things, to the exhibit of the Nash Polytech Military Scientific Institution — the legendary PPD-40 submachine gun. The SPbPU search team found the weapon last year at the site of fierce battles of the 3rd Frunze Division. It is noteworthy that the soldier with whom the PPD-40 was found volunteered for the front straight from Torpedo Plant No. 181.

Today, the restored PPD-40 is not just a museum exhibit, but a living testimony to the courage and fortitude of the defenders of the Motherland. During the exhibition, it literally returned to its origins. Thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts and searchers, the weapon that saw the most difficult moments of military history has found a new life and a worthy place in the exhibition dedicated to the feat of the torpedo plant workers during the Great Patriotic War, said Marina Gladkova, Deputy Director of the VIK "Our Polytech".

This month, activists of the VIC "Our Polytech" took part in the festival "Password – Victory", which took place at the Narva Gate. Visitors to the event visited the headquarters of the command of the Great Patriotic War, got acquainted with Soviet weapons, visited a tent camp and a medical exhibition, and tested their accuracy in a pneumatic shooting range.

The main event of July was the club's participation in the large-scale military-historical festival "Ostrovsky Line" in the Pskov Region. It was a real memory marathon, uniting more than a thousand spectators. In one day, the students performed in three reconstructions at once. They recreated the heroic defense of the Ostrovsky fortified area in the summer of 1941, the actions of partisan detachments behind enemy lines, and the breakthrough of the powerful defensive line "Panther" in 1944. The T-40 tank restored by the club activists was very popular. It was here, at the "Ostrovsky Line", that the exhibit debuted a year ago. Since then, the vehicle has become an integral part of large reconstructions.

SPbPU received a grant to create an engineering center

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University has won the competitive selection of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for the creation of an engineering center for new materials, welding and additive technologies for low-tonnage production of high-tech products in power engineering.

Funding will be provided from the federal budget of the Russian Federation within the framework of the program to support the renewal of the material and technical base of organizations carrying out scientific research and development.

Polytechnic University is confidently among the top 10 leaders among Russian universities in terms of the volume of applied scientific research and development. Today, the university ecosystem includes more than 70 research and scientific production laboratories and more than 30 scientific and educational centers in cooperation with industrial partners. Among the most important resources, one can highlight the additive technology center, the supercomputer center, academic and commercial licenses for world-class software and modern engineering equipment. The creation of the engineering center will contribute to the consolidation of Polytechnic University's competencies by attracting qualified researchers and engineering and technical personnel, and the combination of existing and purchased scientific and production equipment will allow providing a wide range of engineering services to the real sector of the economy.

The engineering center will be created on the basis of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport of SPbPU. Director of IMMiT and project manager Anatoly Popovich noted that the main tasks of the center will be the provision of engineering and research services, the implementation of experimental design and technological work on orders from industrial partners, as well as the formation of a portfolio of orders in the "single window" mode and their implementation to ensure a full technological chain with the real sector of the economy.

This victory is a recognition of the university's potential and an incentive to implement advanced solutions in the country's priority sectors. Novosibirsk State University (NSU) together with IT holding T1 is implementing Bachelor's degree program "Applied Artificial Intelligence". This year, 150 students will be accepted. Excursions and lectures: Summer engineering and economic school at the State University of Management has completed its work

On July 24, 2025, participants of the Summer Engineering and Economics School 2025 visited the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

Young scientists met with the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education Alexander Mazhuga, who spoke about the work of the Committee, the stages and features of the legislative process in the field of science and higher education, and shared the results of the work during the spring session of 2025. The Committee ensured the adoption of 13 federal laws concerning benefits for admission, changes in the education system, scientific and innovation policy.

The meeting was held in the format of an open dialogue – participants asked questions about the defense of candidate dissertations in graduate school, the logistical support of historical buildings of regional universities, and discussed the program for improving housing conditions for young scientists.

The school participants had an extensive tour of the State Duma. The guests learned about the history of Russian statehood by visiting the exposition of the State Duma museum complex, saw personal belongings of famous politicians, and learned about the daily work of factions and committees.

As part of the lecture program, Acting Rector of the V.G. Shukhov BSTU Sergey Glagolev gave the school participants a lecture "How to Build a Car", in which he told the audience about the history, approaches and principles of creating cars, as well as how the introduction of digital technologies affects the development of the automotive industry in our country and in the world.

The transport theme was continued by Elena Duganova, Associate Professor of the Department of Operation and Organization of Motor Transport at the V.G. Shukhov Belarusian State Technical University. The speaker presented a lecture entitled "Transport Technologies of the Future", where the audience learned about how cities and ground transport infrastructure will change with the development of unmanned aircraft systems.

The day ended with a lecture by Denis Serdechny, Head of the Laboratory of Convergent Expertise and Assessment of Technology Maturity at the Research Institute of Public Policy and Sectoral Economics of the State University of Management. Together with the speaker, the audience discussed the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence in science and education. Participants considered the risks of active development of AI systems, in particular neural networks, and also tried to identify their vulnerabilities.

On the final day of the school, the participants went on an excursion to the Moscow Transport Museum at VDNKh. The young scientists visited the exhibition "You look 100%!", where they learned how transport design in Russia has been formed and changed over the past hundred years. The exhibition told about design solutions in the history of domestic automobile, rail and water transport, the events that influenced it, and the people who designed all this equipment. The excursion participants saw rare domestically produced cars, including the ZiS-Sport, Moskvich-Tourist, GAZ-3105 and VNIITE Maxi, the image of the car of the future "Molniya" and the electric car-gadget "Atom", as well as rare archival photo and video materials of equipment tests, scale models and mock-ups.

At the closing of the "Summer Engineering and Economics School – 2025", the participants shared their impressions of the school program, especially noting the high level of both excursions and lectures. The guests of the State University of Management wished success in the further development and expansion of the project and unanimously admitted that they would be glad to return to the School next season.

Navy and Polytechnic: an inseparable link

Russian Navy Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of July, and each time these are different dates. But in 2025, we have the opportunity to congratulate the sailors on the day established by the founder of the Russian fleet, Emperor Peter the Great, after whom the Polytechnic University is named. During Peter's reign, it was on July 27 that they honored the sailors in memory of the great victories of the Russian fleet at Cape Gangut in 1714 and Grengam Island in 1720. On this day, ships were decorated with flags, fireworks were fired, and parades were held.

The creation of the fleet was one of Peter's main achievements. The first ships were built in Voronezh. And on December 1, 1699, Peter approved the St. Andrew's naval flag. In 1702, they began building galleys on the Syas, Luga and Svir rivers. In 1704, the tsar founded the Admiralty shipyards in the future capital. Ships were built all over Russia: in Voronezh, Kazan, Pereslavl, Arkhangelsk, Olonets, St. Petersburg and Astrakhan. By 1725, the Russian fleet numbered 130 sailing ships, 253 galleys and 143 brigantines.

Peter not only created the Russian navy, but also laid the foundation for engineering in the country. Years later, the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute became a prominent representative of engineering education. One of the first departments opened there was shipbuilding. It was headed by a talented engineer Konstantin Boklevsky.

In 1930, the shipbuilding faculty was transformed into the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute, which became the ancestor of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University, the famous Korabelka.

Strong ties with the Navy have always been an important part of Polytechnic University's activities – from the creation of the first submarines to marine robotics today.
