HANOI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Eight people have been killed and three others are missing in flash floods and landslides that have hit northern Vietnam's Dien Bien Province in recent days, the Vietnam News Agency reported Saturday.

About 60 houses had been washed away or damaged by floodwaters as of 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the country's Disaster Management Authority.

30 villages remain isolated due to traffic disruption.

Almost 700 people, including police officers, military personnel, local militia and representatives of public organizations, have been involved in the search for the missing persons.

During an inspection tour of one commune on Saturday morning, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha called on local authorities to act quickly to ensure no one is left without food, communication or access to information.

He also stressed the need to ensure the safety of both rescuers and citizens affected by the disaster. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — The box office revenue of "Nanjing Photo Studio," a new Chinese film about the Nanjing Massacre, exceeded $1 billion (about $140 million) by the end of Friday (the eighth day of release), with moviegoers' flow in cinemas nationwide exceeding 30 million, according to data from ticketing platforms Maoyan and Beacon.

The film "Nanjing Photo Studio" tells the story of a group of Chinese citizens who seek refuge in a photo studio during the brutal occupation of Nanjing by the Japanese invaders.

Directed by Shen Ao, the film became the first release since the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) to achieve such a high box office performance, and has maintained its top position in China's daily box office since its release on July 25.

The film resonated deeply with viewers, with its rating on Douban, China's leading movie rating platform, reaching 8.6 out of 10.

As of 7:50 p.m. Thursday, China's box office revenue for the period from June 1, the start of the 2025 summer movie season, including pre-sales, had exceeded 6 billion yuan. -0-

UN chief presents proposals for assessing mandate implementation

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) — The United Nations, through its three main organs and their subsidiary bodies, has issued more than 40,000 mandates since 1946, but 85 percent of the mandates in force do not contain provisions for review or termination, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday.

Addressing UN Member States with the report “Review of Mandate Implementation – UN80 Initiative: Workflow 2”, A. Guterres identified a number of problems in their implementation: cumbersome processes, duplication, overlapping structures and a growing gap between mandates and resources.

The UN Secretary-General has put forward several proposals for consideration concerning the development, implementation, review and evaluation of mandates.

He proposed creating digital registries of mandates that would allow for early identification of possible duplication. He also proposed making mandates more concise, clear, targeted and with realistic funding requirements.

Last year, the UN system held 27,000 meetings involving 240 bodies. More than half of all mandates require reporting. In 2023 alone, the UN Secretariat produced 1,100 reports, and three out of five reports deal with recurring themes, according to the UN chief.

In this regard, A. Guterres proposed reducing the number of meetings and reports, as well as introducing a more transparent and targeted system of monitoring and reporting on the implementation of tasks.

He stressed that mandates are a matter for UN member states. “They are an expression of your will. They are the sole property and responsibility of member states.”

According to A. Guterres, the role of the UN “is to implement them fully, faithfully and effectively.” “My responsibility is to ensure that the Secretariat has the necessary resources and capabilities to implement the direction you have chosen,” the Secretary-General concluded. –0–

Driverless technology offers residents a new travel experience

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — The future of urban mobility is ahead of schedule in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou.

Upon arrival at Baiyun International Airport, a simple online booking is enough to have a driverless taxi arrive at the airport. Within the city, autonomous minibuses take passengers to attractions such as the Canton Tower, while low-altitude flight routes allow the “air buses” to be used in everyday life.

Since February this year, Guangzhou-based robotaxi service provider Pony.ai has been running a robotaxi service between the city center, the airport, and the high-speed rail station. Passengers have reported a calm experience: no abrupt stops, no crawling transitions, just a spacious cabin gliding along at a leisurely pace.

“Our rates are in line with those of regular taxis,” says Chen Haosheng, a Pony.ai employee. “Each car now makes up to 15 trips a day, and demand is growing.” The difference is subtle—dozens of high-definition radars and cameras, not a human hand, evaluate each lane change.

Another Guangzhou-based tech company, WeRide, launched an autonomous minibus service at the Canton Tower. The futuristic service has become a must-have for tourists visiting the city.

The 9-kilometer Canton Tower Loop, which operates daily from 8:00 to 21:00, carried 1.13 million passengers and traveled more than 2.01 million kilometers from December 2023 to the end of 2024.

According to the city bus authority, as of the end of April 2025, 12 such driverless bus routes operating in Guangzhou had safely served 1.17 million passengers and traveled 2.17 million kilometers.

The launch of these demonstration routes demonstrates Guangzhou's steady progress in autonomous driving.

As one of the first cities in China to explore autonomous driving capabilities, Guangzhou offers a rich variety of road test scenarios, creating favorable conditions for the application and demonstration of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs).

Since 2018, Guangzhou has been actively developing the ICV market, implementing policies and standards related to road testing, demonstration application and operation, and gradually opening up its urban roads.

The city is also pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving by aggressively pursuing “air transportation.” In late March, EHang Intelligent, a Guangzhou-based drone manufacturer, received certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to operate autonomous passenger drones. This means consumers will soon be able to purchase tickets at designated locations in Guangzhou to experience low-altitude tours, city sightseeing, and various commercial passenger services.

Developed by EHang, the EH216-S is an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle. It has completed over 60,000 safe flights worldwide and can be applied in scenarios such as passenger transportation, aerial tours, air logistics, and even emergency medical care.

"In the future, planes will have fixed stations like buses, and these stations will be very close to people's homes and destinations. People will also be able to book planes through their mobile phones," said Xue Peng, vice president of EHang Intelligent.

According to the Guangzhou Low-Altitude Economy Development Plan released in May 2024, the total value of Guangzhou's low-altitude economy is expected to reach 150 billion yuan (about 21 billion US dollars) by 2027, with commercial manned flights being one of the main areas.

Data released by the CAAC shows that the market value of the low-altitude economy sector is expected to reach 1.5 trillion yuan by 2025, and could soar to 3.5 trillion yuan by 2035. -0-

JERUSALEM/AMMAN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Jordan, Egypt, Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), France and Spain on Friday carried out a joint airdrop operation to airdrop humanitarian aid for residents of the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that for the first time, 126 packages of humanitarian aid were airlifted to Gaza with the participation of Germany, Spain and France.

The IDF noted that it will continue to work to improve the supply of humanitarian aid to the enclave together with the international community, refuting “false claims” of a deliberate starvation of Gaza.

The Jordanian Armed Forces said in a statement that they had sent humanitarian aid, including food and baby formula, to Gaza in coordination with several international partners.

During the operation, some 57 tons of critical supplies were airlifted by aircraft from Jordan, Germany, the UAE, France and Spain, bringing the total amount of supplies delivered to Gaza since missions resumed last week to some 148 tons, the statement said.

Earlier on Friday, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that Israeli forces had killed 24 Palestinians in Gaza in several incidents since dawn, including five people trying to receive humanitarian aid. –0–
