ACCRA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Friday donated 40 tons of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people amid the Gaza crisis.

J.D. Mahama said the shipment, mostly cocoa-based food products produced in Ghana, was intended to alleviate hunger in Palestine.

“This donation underscores Ghana’s commitment to global peace and humanitarianism,” the President said, adding that cocoa, as one of Ghana’s most valuable natural resources, represents the resilience, generosity and economic well-being of millions of Ghanaian farmers.

“Ghana supports a peaceful, negotiated solution between Israel and Palestine based on the principle of two states for two peoples in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions,” stressed J.D. Mahama.

The Palestinian Ambassador to Ghana, Abdalfatah Ahmed Khalil Al-Sattari, expressed gratitude to the President and the people of Ghana for this kind gesture. –0–

HARBIN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — At a farm owned by China's leading agricultural conglomerate Beidahuang Group, digital sensors monitor rice fields under the scorching sun. Advanced sensors track weather and soil conditions, transmitting real-time data to a farming control center.

Youyi Farm, the country's first large-scale mechanized state-owned farm established in 1954 in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, remains a model of modern farming.

Its arable land area is about 126,667 hectares, of which 12,667 hectares are already “cared for” by the intelligent neural network. According to Qu Hui, director of the scientific and technological information center at the farm, more than 500 sets of Internet of Things (IoT) devices are connected to this network, replacing human labor in agricultural production.

In addition to field equipment, drones create 3D images of crop growth daily through aerial photography. In addition, 120 smart irrigation valves are connected to water level sensors, enabling automated irrigation. These advanced technologies ensure that agricultural production is carried out with greater precision and efficiency, according to Qu Hui.

As a leading grain-producing region in China, Heilongjiang Province has vast expanses of fertile black soil and rice fields, creating ideal conditions for growing grain. By integrating information technology and artificial intelligence into the entire process of agricultural production and marketing, Heilongjiang Province has improved agricultural productivity and significantly increased crop yields.

Data show that the contribution of science and technology to the growth of total agricultural output in Heilongjiang Province has exceeded 70 percent, one of the highest rates in the country. The mechanization rate in cultivation, planting and harvesting has reached 99 percent, ranking first in China.

Founded in 2014 in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, Elite China, a technology company, has become a key player in driving smart development in the province's agricultural sector.

The company's CTO, Hu Bo, explained that their flagship product is an intelligent system that uses dynamic maps to provide highly accurate, customized fertilization solutions tailored to crop needs, akin to performing a "CT scan" for plants.

Elite China CEO Gao Wenhui noted that their company has established strong partnerships with institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Harbin Engineering University to accelerate the implementation of their innovative scientific and technological achievements in the agricultural sector.

Last year, Heilongjiang Province's grain output reached an unprecedented level, exceeding 80 billion kg, accounting for 11.33 percent of the country's total grain output. This achievement cemented Heilongjiang Province's position as China's leading grain producer for the 15th consecutive year.

The development of modern agricultural methods has not only increased grain production in Heilongjiang, but also improved its quality.

At the 7th China Grain Trade Conference held earlier this July, Heilongjiang Province proudly showcased its “Excellent Black Soil Products” brand at the theme exhibition area, which was joined by over 70 exhibitors from the province, displaying a wide range of high-quality grain and oilseed products, including rice, flour, soybean oil, etc.

Ren Guanyu, chairman of Heilongjiang Agricultural Investment Food Group, one of the exhibitors, said products considered Heilongjiang's flagship products have recently arrived in the capital, Beijing. These premium farm products are equipped with features such as digital traceability and international quality certifications, making them more attractive to consumers. -0-

SANTIAGO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — One of five miners trapped in Chile's El Teniente copper mine was found dead on Friday, raising the death toll from the collapse triggered by a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in central Chile to two.

State mining company Codelco confirmed that human remains had been found during ongoing rescue operations, but identification has not yet been completed.

“This news is a hard blow,” said Andrés Músic, general manager of the El Teniente branch. “But it confirms that we are on the right track in our rescue operations,” he added.

Following Thursday's accident, Codelco suspended mining and began clearing debris to reach trapped workers. According to the latest figures, rescuers have removed 2,450 tons of debris and advanced 21 meters of the 90 meters needed to reach the miners' suspected location, where three underground shelters are located.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric said all national resources and efforts were focused on the rescue operation. “Our priority is to support the families and keep them informed every step of the way,” he said.

El Teniente, the world's largest underground copper mine, is located 130 km south of Santiago at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level. It employs almost 4,000 people and produced 356,000 metric tons of copper in 2024. –0–

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — With a 30 percent tariff imposed by the United States set to take effect soon, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday vowed to continue all diplomatic efforts to protect national interests.

According to a statement released by the presidential office, South Africa will continue negotiations with the United States on the 30 percent tariff, which is expected to come into effect on August 7 at 00:01 US East Coast Time /04:01 GMT/.

The South African government has presented the American side with a framework agreement aimed at strengthening mutually beneficial trade and investment relations.

“All channels of communication remain open for interaction with the United States, and our negotiators are ready, awaiting an invitation from the United States,” the head of state said in a statement.

The President noted that the South African government is finalising a package of measures to support companies vulnerable to tariffs, which includes a range of measures to help firms, manufacturers and workers.

"South Africa will continue to make every diplomatic effort to protect its national interests," the president said.

On Tuesday, the South African government acknowledged that “a combination of geopolitical, domestic and trade issues” was driving the current impasse between the two sides.

Relations between South Africa and the United States have been on the decline since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

D. Trump indicated that he may not participate in the G20 summit, which will be held in November in Johannesburg, the largest city and economic center of South Africa. –0–

SHIJIAZHUANG, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — After days of continuous torrential rains in north China's Hebei Province, power supply and road infrastructure are gradually being restored in disaster-hit areas, while local authorities brace for more downpours, renewing emergency warnings.

Power had been restored to all villages affected by the recent heavy rain in Chengde City, Hebei Province, as of 9:00 a.m. Saturday, according to State Grid Jibei Electric Power Co., Ltd.

Following the flood, 159 emergency response teams and about 1,000 personnel were mobilized. Mobile power plants were deployed to ensure uninterrupted power supply to hospitals, water supply stations and base stations.

To date, 145 power transmission lines have been restored and power has been supplied to 562 villages. However, seven power transmission lines and some branches remain inaccessible and cannot be repaired due to damaged roads, affecting 45 villages. In these areas, power has been temporarily supplied using mobile power units and generators. Repair crews are currently focused on installing poles and completing electrical wiring to fully restore power supply.

Road infrastructure has also been restored, with a total of 961 previously damaged road sections now reopened to traffic. Except for one highway and four rural roads in Chengde, all flood-damaged roads have been cleared, according to the Hebei Provincial Department of Transport.

Four teams of technical consultants were dispatched to the cities of Chengde, Zhangjiakou and Baoding to draw up reconstruction plans. Meanwhile, relevant departments carried out cleanup work on 1,432 and 1,159 sites damaged by landslides and mudslides, respectively.

On Saturday at 4:00 p.m., Hebei Province issued a Level 4 emergency response for severe meteorological disasters and heavy rainfall, calling on all areas to assess the risks based on local conditions and prepare accordingly.

The provincial meteorological station issued a blue alert for heavy rain from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, with heavy rainfall of over 100mm expected in some areas of Zhangjiakou, Chengde, Tangshan and Qinhuangdao.

Warnings of mountain torrents were issued in parts of Tangshan, Qinhuangdao and Chengde. Yellow alerts for geological disasters including landslides, mudslides and avalanches were also issued in parts of Baoding, Zhangjiakou, Chengde and Tangshan.

As a reminder, China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow and blue. The emergency response system also includes four levels, with level 1 being the most serious. -0-
