CANBERRA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — The Australian government has allocated additional funds for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong and International Development Minister Anne Ali on Monday announced that Australia would provide an additional A$20 million (US$12.9 million) to organisations delivering food, medicine and other vital aid to Gaza.

The new funding includes A$6 million (US$3.8 million) for the UN World Food Programme and A$5 million (US$3.2 million) each for UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The ministers said in a joint statement that the new aid package brings Australia's total humanitarian assistance to Gaza since October 2023 to more than A$130 million (US$84 million).

“Australia has consistently joined international calls for Israel to allow full and immediate resumption of aid to Gaza in accordance with the binding rulings of the International Court of Justice,” said P. Wong.

The funding was announced a day after tens of thousands of Australians joined pro-Palestinian protests in Sydney and Melbourne calling for an end to the war and famine in Gaza.

In Sydney, despite rainy weather and attempts by authorities to prevent the demonstration, about 90,000 people took part in a protest on the famous Harbour Bridge.

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek told the Seven Network on Monday that Australians wanted to "send a message" that there had been too many deaths. -0-

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — At least seven inmates were killed and 11 were injured in riots that broke out at a prison in the city of Tuxpan in Mexico's eastern Veracruz state on Saturday afternoon, the state's Public Security Ministry said on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, following the riots, National Guard troops, along with members of the Ministry of National Defense and the Secretariat of Public Security of the state, regained control of the Social Reintegration Center, the secretariat reported on social networks.

“As a result of the riots, according to available information, seven prisoners were killed, another 11 people were injured and are undergoing treatment in various hospitals,” the statement said.

The secretariat reported that several fires caused by the riots in the prison had been completely extinguished and a number of inmates had been transferred to a prison in the city of Panuco.

The Veracruz State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to good governance and improving security conditions in prisons in coordination with other government agencies. –0–

HARBIN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — The main forum of the annual Sun Island Business Conference opened Sunday in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, with new-quality productive forces the main topic of discussion.

BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Water Resources on Sunday raised its emergency response to floods in northwest China's Gansu and Qinghai provinces to Level 3, the third-highest in China's four-tier disaster response system.

According to the forecast of the ministry and the China Meteorological Administration, many areas in the two provinces will face the risk of flash floods of the highest "red" level from 8:00 p.m. on August 3 to 8:00 p.m. on August 4.

The ministry has asked water departments in both provinces to closely monitor the rainfall situation on the ground, especially in high-risk areas including construction sites and valleys.

TEHRAN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) on Sunday approved the establishment of a national defense council chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian, the SNSC-affiliated Nour News agency reported.

As specified, the defense council will be responsible for “centralized consideration of defense plans /of the country/ and for increasing the potential of the Iranian armed forces.”

The council will include the heads of Iran's three branches of government, namely the executive, judicial and legislative, as well as the commanders of the armed forces and individual ministers.

A Nour News report posted on social media site X on Wednesday said that “after the necessary groundwork has been laid and structural reforms have been carried out, the likelihood of inevitable changes at the level of some of the top security agencies has increased.” –0–

HARBIN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — A Chinese historical drama film titled "731" about the horrific biological experiments on humans conducted by the infamous Japanese Unit 731 during World War II will be released on Sept. 18, informed sources said.

According to the film's director, Zhao Linshan, the movie tells the story of local merchant Wang Yongzhang and others who were thrown into prison and lured into cooperating with medical examinations and disease prevention research with false promises of freedom.

Instead, they all became victims of brutal medical experiments carried out by the Japanese occupiers, including frostbite experiments, exposure to poisonous gases, and vivisection.

Unit 731 was established in Harbin City, capital of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, as a top-secret research base for the development of biological and chemical weapons and served as the command center for Japan's biological warfare in China and Southeast Asia during World War II.

“This is a story that must never be forgotten,” said the film’s historical consultant, director of the Unit 731 Crime Evidence Museum, Jin Chengmin.

"The film shows the inhumane atrocities of the Japanese army through the eyes of ordinary people, and at the same time highlights the unbending spirit of resistance of the Chinese people in the most desperate situation," Jin Chengmin said, adding that "the film serves as a vivid reminder of the need to defend peace."

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The film's release date coincides with the anniversary of the September 18 Incident in 1931, which marked the beginning of Japan's 14-year invasion of China. –0–

Moscow, August 3 (Xinhua) — The activity of the Krasheninnikov volcano in Kamchatka, which began erupting on Sunday night, has decreased, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

"The volcano's activity has decreased. Moderate explosive activity may still be occurring, but no dense ash plume is visible from the volcano on satellite images. The volcano is currently covered by dense cloud cover," the agency said in a statement.

Scientists note that ash emissions up to 10 km above sea level may occur at any time. The volcano has been assigned an “orange” aviation hazard code.

The volcano belongs to the Eastern Volcanic Belt. It is located on the territory of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, 200 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The height of the volcano is 1856 m.

According to Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team /KVERT/, this is the first eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years. According to her, the eruption is possibly related to the recent strong earthquake on the peninsula. –0–
