CHENGDU, China, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The 12th Chengdu World Games are bringing people from all over the world together, from the opening ceremony that blended cultural heritage and modern performances to the diversity of Sichuan cuisine.

One of the highlights of the opening ceremony on Thursday was the Friendship Tree fireworks display, inspired by ancient tree root relics found in Jinsha in Chengdu and the pigeon tree native to Sichuan Province, symbolizing peace, progress and friendship.

Croatian archer Amanda Mlinaric said the tree-shaped fireworks were the “best” she had ever seen and that the opening ceremony itself left a lasting impression on her. “I think it’s definitely worthy of the Olympics, not just the World Games,” she said.

Czech wushu artist Jan Hoffmann was also impressed by the torch lighting. Two water skiers swam through the waves to light the torch, which was shaped like a jet of water rising from a lake.

“This is just crazy,” J. Hoffmann shared enthusiastically. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Held under the theme of “Unlimited Sports, Countless Wonders,” the 12th Chengdu World Games not only offers fierce competitions but also a host of cultural activities, from Chinese language classes and Sichuan Opera mask-changing performances to calligraphy and Sichuan embroidery workshops and visits to local attractions.

“I love pandas, they are so cute,” Estonian archer Meeri-Marita Paas told Xinhua during a tour of the Chengdu Research and Breeding Base for Giant Pandas on Friday. She added that she had never seen a panda before, so she thought Chengdu was an ideal place to visit.

After the competition, the Estonian athlete plans to try the famous spicy cuisine of Chengdu and get to know the province better, namely visiting the giant Buddha statue in Leshan and Mount Emei.

“What I really like about archery is that I can become friends with my competitors,” added Croatian archer A. Mlinarić, who is also a friend of M.-M. Paas. “We don’t look at each other with hostility – it’s just my arrows against their arrows. After the competition, we remain friends. We can go for a coffee or have fun together. It’s great.”

The Croatian athlete will also remember the 12th World Games for another reason: she celebrated her 24th birthday on the opening day. Her archery friends and volunteers from the Athletes' Village congratulated the birthday girl and presented her with gifts.

“People are so welcoming and friendly. I feel like a celebrity or a supermodel,” said A. Mlinaric with a smile.

The opening ceremony of the Chengdu World Games was held at the Tianfu International Conference Center, which stretches 430 meters, making it the largest single wooden structure in Asia.

"The roof reminds us of a house that protects us from rain and storm. We want to tell our guests from all over the world that we are one family under one roof," said General Manager Hu Xiao at the opening ceremony. -0-

JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The Israeli army's planned takeover of Gaza City will take at least six months, Israeli state television Kan TV reported Saturday evening.

Citing senior security sources, the channel provided a detailed timeline of the army's actions after the operation was approved by the security cabinet on Friday.

According to the TV channel, in two weeks the army will begin evacuating more than 800 thousand residents of the largest city in the sector to the humanitarian zone of Al-Mawasi in southern Gaza.

A reserve division will be recruited within a month to join the five divisions operating in the Strip ahead of an intensive military operation in Gaza City, which is due to begin in about two months.

In preparation for the ground operation, Israeli authorities plan to quadruple the number of trucks carrying humanitarian aid entering Gaza to 1,200.

The Israeli army's decision to seize Gaza City has drawn condemnation both domestically and internationally. Critics say Israel is violating international law, worsening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and undermining efforts to broker a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, thousands of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday calling for an end to the war through a deal that would secure the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. –0–

LONDON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Any diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis must protect the vital security interests of both Ukraine and Europe, European leaders said Saturday evening.

The joint statement was signed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Finnish President Alexander Stubb ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.

European leaders agreed that vital interests include the need for strong and reliable security guarantees that will enable Ukraine to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to the statement, the only way to lasting peace and security in Ukraine is through a combination of active diplomacy, continued support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia. It is noted that meaningful negotiations can only take place in the context of a ceasefire or reduction of military actions.

European leaders welcomed Trump's efforts to bring peace to Ukraine and pledged further European diplomatic support as well as "substantial military and financial support" to Ukraine through a "coalition of the willing."

On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed ending the Russian-Ukrainian conflict with several European leaders, including K. Starmer, E. Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. –0–

CAIRO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The ministerial committee mandated by the extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic summit on Gaza, along with 23 countries, the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, on Saturday jointly expressed "strong condemnation and categorical rejection" of Israel's intention to establish full military control over Gaza.

A joint statement issued by the foreign ministries of countries including Egypt, Palestine, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Mauritania, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Chad, Djibouti, Somalia, Turkey and Gambia described Israel's intention as "a dangerous and unacceptable escalation, a flagrant violation of international law and an attempt to consolidate an illegal occupation and impose by force a fait accompli on the ground, contrary to international legitimacy."

It also notes that such measures “prevent any possibility of achieving peace, undermine regional and international efforts to de-escalate and peacefully resolve the conflict, and exacerbate serious violations of the rights of the Palestinian people.”

The countries and blocs demanded “an immediate and complete end to Israeli aggression” in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as “unconditional access” for humanitarian aid to Gaza and freedom of action for humanitarian organizations.

They also expressed support for the mediation efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the United States “to achieve a ceasefire and an agreement on the exchange of prisoners and hostages.”

At the same time, at a meeting in Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also “reaffirmed their rejection of the military reoccupation of the Gaza Strip” and called for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave, the Egyptian presidential office said in a statement.

Also on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said six countries parachuted 106 containers of humanitarian aid across the Gaza Strip.

Greece and Italy took part in the air operation for the first time, cooperating with the UAE, Jordan, Germany and the Netherlands.

Since the international airdrop operation resumed in late July, 11 countries have taken part and have so far delivered more than 1,100 aid packages to Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces said it was continuing a series of actions to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and would work with the international community to increase aid, while rejecting accusations that it was deliberately causing starvation there.

But U.N. officials and experts say airdrops will have little impact on easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza unless Israel opens land crossings to allow more aid and medical care for those suffering from malnutrition.

Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Gaza on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack on southern Israel that, according to Israeli authorities, killed about 1,200 people and took hostages.

Gaza health authorities said on Saturday that at least 61,369 Palestinians have been killed and 152,850 injured since October 2023. –0–

LONDON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — At least 365 people were arrested on Saturday during a protest in support of the pro-Palestinian movement Palestine Action, which was designated a terrorist organization in July, London police said on social media.

Police estimated that there were between 500 and 600 people in Parliament Square when the protest began. Police said that anyone who was in the square holding signs in support of Palestine Action “has either been arrested or is in the process of being arrested.”

Police added that seven people were arrested for other offences, including five for assaulting police officers.

In July, MPs voted to designate Palestine Action as a terrorist group after its members stormed RAF Brize Norton in June, spraying two Voyager jets with red paint and causing £7m ($9.38m) worth of damage. The group claimed responsibility for the incident. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — China has contributed wisdom, resolve and strength to building a community with a shared future for mankind and achieving global sustainable development, according to an analysis report released in Beijing on Sunday.

“Emerald Waters and Green Mountains for a Beautiful China and the World: China’s Ecological Civilization Concept and Practice and Their Impact on the World” is the title of a new report jointly released by the Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with the Xinhua News Agency, and the Center for the Study of Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization.

According to the report, China has unleashed the global value of the concept of "emerald waters and green mountains are priceless assets" by strengthening the green consensus in the world, promoting the vitality of green transition, playing a leading role in global environmental governance, and jointly building the green Belt and Road.

In the global transition to green energy, China, with its accelerated development of new energy, is enriching the world supply and thus helping to ease global inflationary pressures. For ten years in a row, China has led the world in both photovoltaic and wind power capacity, accounting for more than 45 percent of the growth in global non-fossil energy consumption, the report notes.

Meanwhile, according to the report, China has established cooperation with more than 100 countries and regions around the world on green energy projects, and a large number of landmark energy initiatives and smaller projects aimed at benefiting people have been implemented, effectively helping to solve the problem of electricity shortage and high cost in the relevant countries.

China's practice has proven that developing countries are well-positioned to strike a balance between environmental protection and development, and China has provided a path for exploration, the report said. -0-

Aden, Yemen, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Yemeni government forces repelled a large-scale offensive by the Houthi group in Yemen's southern Dhale province on Saturday and killed three Houthi militants in a clash, a military official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The Houthis used heavy artillery in an attempt to break through government lines in the Bab Galak area in northern Dali province, he said, triggering intense fighting between the group and government forces.

The fighting lasted for about an hour. In addition to the three deaths, the group also suffered losses in military equipment, the source said, adding that five government soldiers were wounded in the fighting.

The Houthi group has not yet responded to reports of the clash.

Yemen has been in a fragile calm since a UN-brokered ceasefire collapsed in late 2022, with both sides unable to agree on extending or expanding it.

The conflict, which began in late 2014, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and pushed millions more to the brink of starvation, according to UN estimates. –0–
