QUITO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Eight people were killed and three others were wounded after a group of armed gunmen opened fire on a crowd outside a nightclub in the city of Santa Lucia in western Ecuador's Guayas province, local media reported.

Armed gunmen reportedly arrived at the nightclub early Sunday morning in two vehicles and opened fire on those present.

Police said one of the dead, Jorge Urquizo, was the brother of the city's mayor, Ubaldo Urquizo.

Violent crime has increased sharply in Guayas province, largely due to gang activity.

On August 6, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency in four provinces, including Guayas and Manabi, citing severe internal unrest. –0–

ISTANBUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey's northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday, local authorities said.

According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the tremors were registered in the Sindirgi district at 19:53 local time /16:53 GMT/.

Footage shown by NTV showed the collapsed building and people trying to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social media X that the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and neighboring provinces, prompted AFAD and all relevant agencies to immediately begin field inspections.

“There have been no reports of any unfavorable situation at this time, and we are closely monitoring the development of the situation,” said A. Yerlikaya. –0–

HONG KONG, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The total number of local companies registered in Hong Kong exceeded 1.5 million by the end of July, while the number of companies from other regions that chose Hong Kong to conduct their business activities was more than 15,000, both reaching historical highs, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Lee Jiachao said Sunday.

From January 2023 to July 2025, the local investment promotion office helped 1,333 companies set up or expand their businesses in Hong Kong, attracting HK$174 billion (US$22.17 billion) in direct investment in the first year of operation and creating more than 19,000 new jobs, Li Jiachao said in a video message posted on social media on Sunday.

Li Jiachao also stressed the function and advantages of Hong Kong as a dual platform, which can, on the one hand, attract foreign investment to develop Hong Kong businesses and enter the Chinese mainland market, and, on the other hand, help companies in the mainland enter international markets.

Hong Kong continues to attract leading international and national companies to set up and expand their businesses in the region, boosting the local economy and creating new jobs, he said.

In the future, the HKSAR government will continue to work together to develop promising emerging markets to expand business opportunities for Hong Kong and mainland companies, balance their investment portfolios, and counter geopolitical challenges, Li concluded. –0–

JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he is determined to move forward with a newly approved plan to take control of Gaza City, a plan that has drawn international condemnation.

Israel “has no choice but to finish what it started and completely defeat the Palestinian Hamas movement,” B. Netanyahu said at a press conference for foreign media in Jerusalem.

“Our goal is not to occupy Gaza, but to liberate it,” the Israeli Prime Minister emphasized.

B. Netanyahu noted that even if Hamas is “completely defeated,” Israel’s post-war plan envisages maintaining control over security in the Palestinian enclave and full control over the territory between Gaza and Israel, where a “buffer zone” will be created.

He said daily life in Gaza would be governed by a "civil administration" under the auspices of an international entity that is neither Israel nor the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority.

Netanyahu also denounced what he called a “global campaign of lies” as condemnation of the plan grew both internationally and within Israel. He rejected claims that the Jewish state was deliberately starving Palestinians, despite evidence in the form of photographs, videos, testimonies from local journalists, international medical experts who visited Gaza, UN experts and human rights groups.

At least five more people died of starvation and exhaustion on Sunday in Gaza, health officials said, bringing the death toll from Israeli airstrikes since Oct. 7, 2023, to at least 61,430. –0–
