Moscow, August 13 /Xinhua/ — Russia considers the alignment of China's Belt and Road initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) an important component of the strategic partnership between Russia and China, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexey Fadeyev said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

"Russia, as a member state of the EAEU, together with its colleagues in the union, interacts with China within the framework of the alignment of the EAEU development plans and the Chinese initiative "Belt and Road". The goal is to take this process to a new level of implementation of joint projects. We consider the link between the initiative "Belt and Road" and the EAEU as an important component of the strategic partnership between our countries," A. Fadeyev noted, answering a question from a Xinhua correspondent.

According to him, the Chinese “Belt and Road” project is in line with Russian ideas for creating an open integration circuit on the Eurasian continent, where freedom of trade and movement of labor would be fully ensured and modern infrastructure would be established.

“Systematic steps in this direction will help solve this problem and strengthen the interconnectedness of the countries of the region,” he believes.

“And it is precisely in this paradigm that the concept of the Greater Eurasian Partnership put forward by our president operates, creating conditions for an equal dialogue with the aim of consolidating the potential of states and regional organizations based on the EAEU, SCO and ASEAN, as well as synchronizing national development programs, including the Belt and Road,” A. Fadeyev emphasized. –0–

St. Petersburg, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — An unmanned truck has traveled for the first time in Russia from St. Petersburg to Kazan, covering a distance of 1,600 km, the manufacturer Navio reported on Wednesday.

The truck covered the route in 24 hours, which is 2.5 times faster than a standard trip with the driver's work and rest schedule. Only engineers were present in the cabin. The unmanned truck uses computer vision to detect obstacles on the road and determine the number of oncoming and following traffic lanes.

For the first time in Russia, the movement of unmanned trucks was opened on the M-11 “Neva” highway in June 2023. –0–

Moscow, August 13 /Xinhua/ — Developing comprehensive cooperation with China is one of the priorities of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) said.

“The comprehensive development of trade and economic relations with the People’s Republic of China is one of the priorities of the trade policy of the Eurasian Economic Union and its member states,” the EEC stated in response to a question from a Xinhua correspondent.

Cooperation between the EAEU and China is based on the Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation, the key goal of which is to create an institutional framework to ensure effective interaction and simplify mutual access to the markets of the parties.

“Today we are seeing a noticeable increase in trade turnover with China,” the Eurasian Economic Commission stated.

In order to deepen and expand cooperation, including that aimed at aligning with the Belt and Road Initiative, a Plan /Roadmap/ for the development of trade and economic cooperation between the EAEU and its member states with China was adopted in February 2023. The Roadmap is aimed at developing cooperation in areas such as digitalization of transport corridors and establishing a dialogue on foreign trade policy between the EAEU and China.

Speaking about specific agreements, the EEC noted that agreements have already been signed between Russian Railways and China Railways. An agreement between Kazakh and Chinese railway workers is expected to be signed in the near future. In addition, the Eurasian Agroexpress project, aimed at accelerated regular transportation of agricultural products and food between the EAEU member states and China, is being successfully implemented.

“A promising direction could also be the alignment of strategic documents of the EAEU and China on issues of mutual interest, including in such areas as transport, logistics and digitalization,” the EEC noted. –0–

Moscow, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — This year marks the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War, as well as the end of the World Anti-Fascist War. The lessons of World War II must not be forgotten, and all attempts to distort the historical truth must be resisted. This is the main thesis of an article by Chinese Consul General in Khabarovsk Jiang Xiaoyang, published in the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper on Wednesday.

Jiang Xiaoyang recalls the history of the Chinese North-Eastern Anti-Japanese United Army, which waged a heroic guerrilla war against the Japanese occupiers for 14 years. In 1941, the army, having suffered very heavy losses and being surrounded, crossed into the territory of the USSR. In the village of Vyatskoye in the Khabarovsk Territory, the 88th separate rifle brigade of the Second Far Eastern Front of the Red Army was created on its basis, which wrote a heroic page in the history of the joint anti-Japanese struggle.

“China and the USSR, being the main theaters of military operations of the Second World War in Asia and Europe, suffered colossal sacrifices and made a huge contribution to the victory over fascism, saving the existence of their nations and the future of humanity,” the article says.

Any attempt to distort the history of World War II, attempts to belittle the role of China and the USSR in the overall victory are unacceptable.

“The bitter lesson of World War II must not be forgotten,” the article emphasizes. “All attempts to distort the historical facts of World War II, deny the victory in World War II and denigrate the historical merits of China and the Soviet Union will fail.”

"Our peoples, united by a common historical memory, similar values and deep traditional friendship, have created a new standard of relations between major states. Eternal good-neighborly friendship, comprehensive strategic interaction and mutually beneficial cooperation have become the spiritual core of Chinese-Russian relations," the Consul General emphasized. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Water Resources on Wednesday issued a level-4 flood alert in four provincial-level regions as Typhoon Podul is expected to bring heavy rains to large swathes of the country in the coming days.

According to weather forecasters, heavy rains are expected from August 13 to 15 in the provinces of Fujian /Eastern China/, Guangdong /Southern China/ and Hunan /Central China/, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region /GZAR, Southern China/.

Heavy rainfall could cause water levels to rise in several local rivers, including the Dongjiang, Xijiang and Xiangjiang, with some small and medium-sized rivers in high-risk areas likely to exceed danger levels.

The Ministry called on local authorities to strengthen monitoring of precipitation and river conditions in real time, promptly notify the population of possible floods and improve measures to prevent flooding in populated areas.

Three working teams were dispatched to Fujian and Guangdong provinces and the GCAR to assist in typhoon preparation, rainfall response and flood control measures.

Let us recall that in China's emergency response system, level 4 is the lowest. -0-

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — South Africa will submit a revised trade proposal to the United States to reduce recently imposed 30 percent tariffs and find alternative export markets to offset the impact, Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a news conference in South Africa's administrative capital Pretoria, he said the cabinet had approved a revised proposal based on a draft put forward in May and taking into account Washington's concerns.

Along with negotiations with the US, the government is implementing a five-point strategy to mitigate the impact, including diversifying exports to alternative markets and providing a package of economic support measures to affected companies and workers, Tau said.

The Minister noted that the target markets are Asia and the Middle East, and the African Continental Free Trade Area is being used to deepen intra-African trade and strengthen regional resilience.

“We are targeting these markets because we see growing demand, ongoing negotiations and a positive attitude towards South African products. Diversification is also aimed at protecting rural livelihoods and sustainable agricultural growth for our people,” the minister said. –0–

JERUSALEM, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir on Wednesday approved the concept of the government's plan to expand the offensive in Gaza to areas not yet under Israeli control.

The Israeli army said the attack would target refugee camps in central Gaza and the southern al-Mawasi district, where most of Gaza's 2.2 million residents have taken refuge.

The principles of the plan were approved at a meeting of security officials earlier on Wednesday, the statement said, adding that “the basic concept of the plan for the next stages of the [operation] in the Gaza Strip was presented and approved in accordance with the instructions of the political leadership.”

The approval of the plan's concept came three days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military had been ordered to begin a "decisive phase" of the Gaza war, aimed at capturing the remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City, refugee camps in central Gaza and the southern al-Mawasi neighborhood. The order was condemned by the international community amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — The 7th China International Petroleum and Petrochemical Technology and Equipment Expo opened in Karamay city in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday, the city's press service said.

More than 400 companies from nine countries, including China, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Singapore and Italy, were represented at the three-day event, which runs until Friday.

The exhibition, with a total area of 33 thousand square meters, consists of 6 special zones: equipment for the oil and gas and chemical industries, alternative energy and new materials, intelligent computing, scientific innovations, etc.

The exhibition will also feature a number of energy events, including a showcase of the latest energy technologies from Central Asian countries. They will be attended by around 2,000 government officials, industry leaders, and representatives of international organizations and businesses from countries including, in addition to the above-mentioned countries, India, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Director of the Institute of Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation Charymukhammet Shallyev expressed hope during an interview that China and Central Asian countries will be able to further expand cooperation in the field of oil equipment and petrochemical technologies.

Co-organized by China National Petroleum Corporation (PetroChina), China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), the exhibition, which was first held in 2012, serves as an important showcase for advanced energy technologies and a key lever for promoting industrial upgrading.

Let us recall that the city of Karamay is located in the northwest of the Dzungarian Basin and is an important oil and petrochemical base for China. The country's first large oil field was discovered here after the formation of New China in 1949. -0-
