CAIRO, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — Egypt sent 1,288 trucks carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing from July 27 to Aug. 17, the country's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

According to him, up to 5,000 trucks with humanitarian aid are still waiting to enter Gaza on the Egyptian side.

Since October 2023, Egypt has ensured the delivery of 550 thousand tons of medical supplies and food to Gaza, which is about 70 percent of the total volume of humanitarian aid sent to the enclave, the Foreign Ministry reported.

In addition, since the beginning of the crisis, planes flying from Egypt have airdropped humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave 168 times, delivering 3,730 tons of materials. 1,022 planes from donor countries have delivered 27,247 tons of aid to Egypt's El-Arish airport. 591 consignments of humanitarian aid have arrived at the country's ports.

From November 2023 to July 2025, Egypt provided medical assistance to wounded Palestinians by deploying 209 ambulances, receiving 18,560 wounded Palestinians and their accompanying persons and hospitalizing them in 172 hospitals.

In addition, 35,000 Egyptian NGO volunteers assisted in the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Since October 7, 2023, the ongoing Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip has killed 62,122 Palestinians and injured 156,758, the enclave's medical authorities said on Wednesday. The fighting has caused widespread destruction to infrastructure and worsened the humanitarian situation.

According to health authorities, 269 people, including 112 children, have died from hunger and malnutrition in Gaza. –0–

AMSTERDAM, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — The Netherlands' largest maritime festival Sail Amsterdam, first held 50 years ago, reopened on Wednesday after a 10-year hiatus.

The festival officially began with the traditional sailing procession along the Noordzee Canal and the IJ river, led by the three-masted clipper Stad Amsterdam /“City of Amsterdam”/. The ship was greeted with a cannon salute and a flyover by Royal Netherlands Air Force aircraft.

This year, the festival fleet included boats of all sizes from around the world, both cutting-edge and classic. Visitors took to the water in small boats, joining the fleet as it made its way to Amsterdam's IJ Bay.

More than 800 ships and around 2 million visitors are taking part in the five-day festival, which runs until August 24.

There will be more than 200 events on land and water, including cultural performances, naval demonstrations, educational exhibits, ship tours and sailing trips.

Sail Amsterdam, founded in 1975 to celebrate Amsterdam's 700th anniversary, is held every five years. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. –0–

JERUSALEM, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — Israel on Tuesday gave final approval for the construction of a new settlement in the E1 area of the highly disputed occupied West Bank.

The High Planning Council approved the construction of 3,753 housing units, 3,401 of which are in the E1 area of the Maale Adumim settlement. The project will create a continuous settlement line separating the West Bank from East Jerusalem.

The E1 development plan, first proposed in the 1990s, was long frozen due to resistance in Israel and abroad. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered its implementation in 2012, then revived the plan ahead of the 2020 elections.

More than 720,000 Israeli settlers currently live among 3.3 million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem captured in the 1967 war. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, including a July 2024 International Court of Justice ruling that found Israel's occupation illegal. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — "Wow! This is something new!" a tourist from Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, suddenly stopped at the Chamber of Commerce Plaza in Heilongjiang Park in Heihe City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, excitedly clapping her companion on the shoulder and pointing to a lifelike fish print and exquisite Russian-style wooden carvings a few steps away.

“It’s so rare to get the chance to see so many wonderful things up close,” Ms. Feng said.

According to the Guangming Daily, the 15th China-Russia Culture and Art Fair was recently ceremoniously opened in Heihe. The China-Russia Intangible Cultural Heritage Fair, organized within the framework of the fair, has caused a huge stir among tourists.

The sights here are simply mind-boggling! The intricate miniature stone carvings, the bright multi-colored Manchu embroidery—you can’t take it all in. Just as you start looking at one, a crowd of spectators immediately gathers around another. Li Junlong, an heir to the tradition of miniature stone carving, demonstrates his work by saying, “Look at this piece, I carved a panda pendant following the natural texture of the stone.”

Russian tourist Natalia says with a smile: "Chinese handicrafts are so exquisite. My son learned how to make straw paintings at the fair, we really enjoyed it."

Following the voice, we come across Zhang Zhanjie, an heir to the technique of making straw products, who is teaching Natalia's son how to make bookmarks.

Fresh straw is first soaked in water for 2 hours, then subjected to multiple treatments: bleaching, disinfection, dyeing. The boy carefully selects colored straw, cuts the green one into bamboo branches, turns the yellow one into its leaves, forming bamboo step by step.

“In Chinese culture, bamboo symbolizes modesty and indomitability of spirit,” explains Zhang Zhanjie.

A few steps away, members of the Russian delegation, masters of decorative and applied arts, present their works: painted ceramics, textile dolls and other items. Ceramics master Larisa, holding a simple white plate, teaches tourists to draw red patterns, and they, in turn, diligently repeat after her.

Nearby, the newly opened Heihe International Night Market is bustling. Li Chun, a tourist from Guangdong Province (South China), spotted a stall with a long queue and hurried to take a seat, all the while taking pictures on his phone. “The trip to Heihe is going really well!” he said.

“We invite everyone to come and have a stroll, the fun is not limited to what you see!” says Sun Yingjian, head of the Heihe City Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism.

According to him, this year, more than 40 events were organized within the framework of the China-Russia Culture and Art Fair in Heihe, which were aimed at integrating culture and tourism.

“One of the goals is for tourists to enjoy cultural flavor during their trip,” Sun Yingjian emphasized. -0-

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated Russians on the 80th anniversary of the domestic nuclear industry.

The official history begins on August 20, 1945, when a Special Committee was created to direct work on the use of uranium atomic energy.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed special gratitude to the workers and veterans of the nuclear industry, scientists and teachers who train personnel for this area, and also emphasized the flagship role of Rosatom State Corporation and the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center in the development of technologies.

"As President Vladimir Putin noted, the creation of the nuclear industry in our country in 1945 was a major, significant event and a true symbol of scientific progress. This gave a powerful impetus to the development of domestic science and industry, and today Russia maintains its leading position in the field of nuclear energy. Our specialists built the world's first nuclear power plant, created the first nuclear icebreaker, and today the development of unique megascience-class installations continues. All this became possible thanks to the colossal diligence, curiosity and passion of the employees of the nuclear industry of the future, present, and I am sure, will be continued by domestic specialists in the future," noted Dmitry Chernyshenko.

For example, today the state corporation Rosatom not only builds nuclear power plants, providing clean energy to the country and the world, but also creates new materials – super-strong, environmentally friendly, helps to develop the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route, develops nuclear medicine methods to defeat incurable diseases, and develops quantum technologies to solve the global problems of humanity.

Rosatom is the world leader in the nuclear industry, operating in more than 60 countries. The company's portfolio of foreign orders for the construction of nuclear power plants includes 33 high-power units in 10 countries, as well as the world's first export project for the construction of low-power nuclear power plants – 6 units in Uzbekistan.

The Deputy Prime Minister also recalled that last year, President Vladimir Putin approved priority areas of scientific and technological development and a list of the most important science-intensive technologies. The first on this list is the area of "Technologies for creating highly efficient systems for generating, distributing and storing energy (including nuclear energy)." To develop them, the national project "New Nuclear and Energy Technologies" is being implemented since 2025.

"In order for our country to continue making breakthroughs in the field of nuclear technologies, it is important to continue to ensure a high level of personnel training. Today, almost 10 thousand students are studying in Russian universities and colleges in programs related to the nuclear industry. This year alone, almost 2.5 thousand budget places were established for them," he said.

The training of qualified specialists for the nuclear industry is also carried out within the framework of 4 advanced engineering schools and 12 clusters of the federal project "Professionalism" of the national project "Youth and Children".

In addition, universities, together with industrial partners, create scientific projects and developments. For example, within the framework of the Priority-2030 program, the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI is implementing the strategic technological project "Nuclear Technologies and New Materials". Within its framework, the development of the kilojoule energy laser installation "ELF" (Experimental Laser-Physical Installation) was launched in July.

Also, Rosatom State Corporation together with the advanced engineering school of the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R.E. Alekseev launched the first industry engineering and design school "Young Designer". It was created to train specialists in the nuclear industry. The project is focused on mastering the latest technologies and systems of operation of modern industrial complexes.
