TOKYO, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Senior citizens aged 65 and above account for an estimated 29.4 percent of Japan's total population, the highest on record, official data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications showed Sunday.

According to the agency's estimates, as of September 15 /Respect for the Elderly Day/, the elderly population stood at 36.19 million. The proportion of elderly people in the total population increased by 0.1 percentage points to a record 29.4 percent.

According to the Labour Force Survey, 9.3 million older people were employed last year, up 160,000 from the previous year and also a record.

The employment rate among those aged 65 and over rose to 25.7 percent, up 0.5 percentage points. Broken down by age group, the employment rate was 53.6 percent for those aged 65-69, 35.1 percent for those aged 70-74, and 12.0 percent for those aged 75 and over.

The ministry attributed the trend to a labor shortage and rising retirement ages, noting that opportunities for older people to stay active are expanding and the number of older people in the workforce is expected to continue to rise. –0–

China Shares 'Intellectual Dividends' with the World

CHONGQING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — At the recently held 2025 World Intelligent Industry Expo in southwest China's Chongqing City, a visitor got into a car and gave a simple voice command. Within seconds, the air conditioner adjusted, the seat massage started, and soft music began playing.

Meanwhile, a few kilometers away from the exhibition center, a smart home system greeted the owner, automatically setting the room temperature and closing the curtains. This seamless integration of smart technology into everyday life embodies China's rapidly developing smart industry, which is becoming a catalyst for global cooperation.

“Unlike earlier models that performed rigid, repetitive tasks, today’s intelligent cars offer emotionally responsive interactions,” said Hao Chengye, product manager at Changan Automobile. “By monitoring the driver’s mood, the car can adjust ambient lighting and fragrances, and even control home devices in real time.”

Innovations like these are a microcosm of China’s broader intellectual ecosystem. From artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to smart homes, new technologies are changing industry and lifestyles, fueling ongoing social transformation.

China’s intelligent economy is expanding at a staggering pace. Its industrial output in 2024 will exceed 700 billion yuan (about $98.6 billion), maintaining an average annual growth rate of over 20 percent for several years. China has also remained the world’s largest industrial robot market for 12 consecutive years, with service robot output growing 34.3 percent year-on-year to reach 10.519 million units in 2024.

China has been actively pursuing international partnerships, as demonstrated by initiatives such as the World Organization for Artificial Intelligence Cooperation and the Global Action Plan on AI Governance. At the recent Chongqing Expo, China reaffirmed its commitment to deepening global cooperation on AI and advancing a shared vision for technology governance.

Chinese companies have already made strides overseas. In June this year, unmanned logistics vehicle maker Zelos became the first company to receive a driverless logistics license in Singapore. In addition, SaaS transcription software iFlyTek now serves more than 1.5 million users overseas and has entered the supply chains of several European and American multinationals.

“The integration of AI into various industries in China opens up enormous opportunities for international cooperation,” said Stefan Sprink, CEO of German AI company ComPro GmbH. “We have already established several partnerships with Chinese companies and are optimistic about future cooperation.”

At the core of this technological revolution is a human-centered philosophy. For example, Chongqing Haifu Medical Technology, a world leader in focused ultrasound, has exported its non-invasive tumor treatment system “Haifu Knife” to 35 countries and regions, providing care to more than 330,000 patients.

“Our equipment has been installed in more than 3,000 domestic medical institutions and more than 80 overseas hospitals in countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative,” said Xu Shu, head of Haifu Medical’s marketing department. “In March, we performed the world’s first surgery using 5G-guided remote focused ultrasound, successfully treating a patient in Kenya.”

In 2024, DeepSeek opened its cutting-edge AI architecture to the global community, sparking a wave of innovation. At one point, Chinese models occupied four of the top five spots in open-source rankings.

This spirit of openness extends to public goods as well. In August, the China Meteorological Administration launched the AI-based multi-hazard warning system “MAZU” and donated its urban disaster prevention module “MAZU-Urban” to international partners. Since January, the system has been trialed in 35 countries in Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

From Braille displays that help the visually impaired to health-monitoring sleep lamps and bionic rehabilitation robots, smart devices built with empathy are entering homes across China.

“Robots don’t have to be cold machines, and innovation should be human-centered,” said Xi Ee, brand director of Chongqing Industrial Innovation Park. “We aim to expand innovation in homes, healthcare and open spaces so that everyone can share in the intellectual dividends.” -0-

SHANGHAI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — An international conference on Central Asia and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held Saturday at the SCO International Legal Training and Cooperation Center (China) based at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, bringing together nearly 100 scholars from universities and research institutions in countries including China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan.

The conference was devoted to such topics as the sustainable development of the SCO, the settlement of regional conflicts, cooperation in the areas of security, economy and culture, the historical significance of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the future development of the organization.

The conference provided a comprehensive overview of the progress and future plans of SCO cooperation in three main areas: security, economy and people-to-people exchanges. Experts called for deepening cooperation in combating terrorism and drugs, promoting trade ties and emerging industries, and promoting exchanges and mutual learning to bring peoples closer together.

Participants of the event stated that multifaceted cooperation not only brought real benefits to the SCO member states, but also laid a solid foundation for the long-term development of the region.

In addition, the conference discussed current issues regarding digital security and artificial intelligence (AI). The conference participants called on the organization's member states to strengthen information security governance, jointly respond to the challenges of the digital era and seize the relevant opportunities, and promote the development of responsible AI. -0-

GAZA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Hamas said Sunday it had suspended prisoner swap talks with Israel, accusing Israel of attacking its delegation at the talks in the Qatari capital Doha last week.

"Negotiations cannot continue if the delegation responsible for them is attacked in the country acting as a mediator," said senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu.

Last Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes hit residential compounds in Doha that Hamas leaders were using to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal. A delegation led by senior Hamas official Khalil al-Haya survived, but five Hamas members and a Qatari security official were killed, the group said.

T. al-Nunu accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of obstructing efforts to achieve both a truce and a prisoner exchange, and warned that an intensification of Israeli strikes on residential buildings in Gaza could endanger Israeli prisoners held there.

“The only logical solution is for the international community to accept and implement the decision to end this war,” he said.

T. al-Nunu also criticized US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Israel on Sunday, saying Hamas does not expect any change in Israel's position.

The comments come as Israeli airstrikes have decimated residential buildings in Gaza City in recent days, killing dozens, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel says its operations target infrastructure and Hamas militants, while the Palestinians say civilians are bearing the brunt of the attacks.

Qatar, Egypt and the US have been trying to broker a truce and prisoner swap since the recent war in Gaza began, but the Doha strike has cast doubt on the prospects for progress. –0–

TRIPOLI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Libya's Supreme Council of State on Sunday welcomed a new truce in Tripoli, saying it strengthens state authority and helps restore key institutions.

A ceasefire was agreed on Saturday between the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) and the rival Special Deterrence Force (SDF), also known as RADA. The deal, brokered and guaranteed by Turkish intelligence, took effect immediately.

The agreement will end months of fighting over control of Mitiga airport, Tripoli's only functioning airport, and a nearby prison. Control of both facilities will now return to the official executive branch.

In a statement, the Supreme State Council praised “national efforts” that prevented new fighting and “spare the country further conflict and losses.” The council called the airport’s handover an important step in strengthening state control and noted that dialogue remains the best path to stability.

Tensions between GNA loyalist forces and SSF fighters based at Mitiga airport had been rising since May. In early September, disputes between the two sides escalated into clashes, prompting mediators to intervene.

Libya has been divided since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country has been split between the Tripoli-based GNA and an eastern administration backed by the Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar.

The Supreme Council of State, which is an advisory body to parliament, called on Libyan factions to put unity first and work to build a civil state based on justice, the rule of law and the aspirations of the people. –0–
