WARSAW, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Polish President Karol Nawrocki on Monday vowed to step up exchanges and deepen cooperation with China, praising the friendship between the two countries.

During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who arrived in Poland on a visit, Nawrocki asked him to convey his greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and expressed admiration for China's outstanding achievements in development.

Poland was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with China, and the two countries have always maintained good friendship, the Polish President emphasized.

K. Navrotsky noted that, as a historian, he is well aware of the enormous sacrifices and contribution of China to the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

Poland, he continued, cherishes the traditional friendship with China and hopes to strengthen exchanges, deepen cooperation, learn from history, and promote the sustainable development of bilateral relations, so as to jointly safeguard world peace and security.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, conveyed greetings to K. Nawrocki from Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting that under the strategic leadership of the two heads of state, the China-Poland comprehensive strategic partnership continues to develop steadily.

According to the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, for more than half a century, friendship has remained the main theme, and cooperation has been the dominant trend in Chinese-Polish relations, despite all the changes in the international situation.

China highly values the role and influence of Poland in Europe and the world, Wang Yi emphasized, stating China's readiness to further deepen strategic mutual trust, strengthen strategic cooperation and jointly develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

The Chinese diplomat expressed hope that Poland would play an active role in helping the EU form an objective and rational perception of China.

According to him, China, which became the main theater of military operations in the East during World War II, was the first to repel Japanese militarism, fought for the longest time and made enormous national sacrifices, thereby making a significant historical contribution to the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.

Wang Yi informed K. Navrotsky about the commemorative events that took place in China in early September and emphasized the importance of remembering history, honoring war heroes, preserving peace and building a better future.

China and Poland are independent countries that firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Wang Yi said, adding that attempts by separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence” to split the country and challenge the victorious results of World War II are a challenge to the entire world and are doomed to failure.

The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed confidence that Poland will continue to adhere to the one-China policy and support the cause of national reunification of China.

K. Nawrocki, in turn, emphasized that since 1949 the Polish government has recognized the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate government representing all of China, and will continue to firmly adhere to the principle of one China.

The parties also exchanged views on the Ukrainian crisis and other issues of mutual interest.

During his visit, Wang Yi also held talks with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and co-chaired the 4th meeting of the China-Poland Intergovernmental Cooperation Commission. –0–

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — Global trade in services is accelerating the transition to greener and smarter development, with green technologies and environmental solutions becoming new growth drivers and creating greater opportunities for international cooperation.

At the recently concluded 2025 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS-2025) in Beijing, new-type energy storage technologies, interactive waste sorting bins, unmanned seaweed-cutting boats and a series of other “green” products and services attracted wide attention from visitors.

Czech company Beistar CZ, participating for the first time at CIFTIS, demonstrated energy storage technology that converts excess grid electricity into thermal energy, storing it inside a unit filled with hot air and highly heat-resistant material, at a cost of about one-fiftieth that of battery storage.

Beistar CZ CTO George Jermakov said he hopes the technology “will be used and useful” in China. “There is no greater opportunity in the world than in China,” he added, noting that he was impressed by the country’s open business environment, with CIFTIS serving as a good example.

J. Dzhermakov also emphasized China's strong commitment to sustainable development. "There is a big wave of movement toward green development in China," he said. "The government and people have taken many steps, and they are moving toward their goals faster and faster."

Held in Beijing from September 10 to 14, CIFTIS 2025 has the theme “Using Smart Technologies to Empower Trade in Services” and attracted nearly 2,000 exhibitors. Participants include representatives from more than 20 of the world’s top 30 countries and regions in services trade.

Developed by Australian company Sencity, the TestraBin interactive waste sorting bin features three sensors for different waste types and is surrounded by electronic screens that encourage correct sorting with game animations or digital content, such as a basketball falling through a hoop.

“Previously, a lot of money was spent on public campaigns to encourage people to sort their waste. This product makes the process interactive and fun,” said Sencity Vice President Zhao Wanzhen. “Every time we show it in China, people show great interest. Many see it as a glimpse of the next era, where everyday objects are infused with more technology and interactivity.”

Chinese companies are also showcasing a wide range of homegrown green innovations at this year's fair, highlighting the country's dual role as a major market and an important source of technology solutions for the global green transition.

The unmanned cleaning vehicle developed by Beijing Environment Sanitation Group attracted wide attention at the fair. Equipped with lidar, 360-degree cameras and ultrasonic radar, the vehicle can clean up to 6,000 square meters per hour, equivalent to the workload of six to eight workers.

The company, which provides comprehensive services from public space cleaning to waste collection, transportation and treatment, has provided consulting and technical support to countries such as Mongolia, Pakistan, Laos, Bangladesh and Chad.

The fair also featured an unmanned algae-cutting boat equipped with sharp blades to clear aquatic plants. The vessel’s built-in intelligence system simulates plant growth to determine the optimal time to remove them, providing a modern solution for aquatic vegetation management.

"Many of the urban management solutions found for a city like Beijing, which has a population of more than 20 million, can be applied to other cities around the world," said Chen Nan, a technologist at the Beijing Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.

Huatong Technology, a comprehensive zero-carbon industrial park solution provider, also attracted attention at the show. The Chinese company develops such parks by integrating renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass to promote the use of green energy and green transportation, as well as upgrading buildings, upgrading equipment and operating a central platform to monitor energy consumption and reduce emissions.

With nearly 20 years of experience in energy saving and carbon emission reduction, Huatong Technology has successfully completed more than 10,000 projects in China in high-tech zones, industrial and logistics parks, and cultural and agricultural parks.

China's services trade volume exceeded $1 trillion for the first time in 2024. It grew 8.2 percent year-on-year to nearly 4.58 trillion yuan (about $644.9 billion) in the first seven months of 2025, according to official data.

At the same time, the structure of trade continued to improve, moving from traditional sectors such as logistics to higher value-added, knowledge-intensive and innovative industries.

“China is at the forefront of key green technologies. It is a low-cost producer of wind, solar, high-power transmission lines and zero-carbon, low-cost power sources,” said Jeffrey Sachs, chairman of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, in a speech at the fair.

J. Sachs added that the world is facing the challenge of ecological transformation, and China can use its global capabilities to accelerate this transformation. -0-

WARSAW, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — The 4th meeting of the China-Poland Intergovernmental Cooperation Commission was held in Warsaw on Monday. It was co-chaired by member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

The two sides held a comprehensive and in-depth exchange of views on the current state of bilateral relations, as well as on international and regional issues of mutual interest, reaching consensus in various areas.

Recalling the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries last year, the two sides agreed that this should serve as impetus for further development of bilateral cooperation within the framework of the China-Poland comprehensive strategic partnership. The two sides agreed to further strengthen and expand bilateral exchanges and effective cooperation, and hold regular meetings of the intergovernmental cooperation commission.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union. The two sides agreed that this provides an important opportunity for the development of bilateral relations between China and the EU member states and can serve as a platform for addressing common political and economic issues.

The parties reaffirmed their support for international law, with the UN Charter at its core, and for the international order based on the fundamental principles of international law. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue effective cooperation at key multilateral venues such as the UN, the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), and the World Trade Organization.

The two sides also reaffirmed their mutual commitment to expanding bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields and at all levels based on the Action Plan for Strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Poland (for the period 2024-2027).

The parties acknowledged the urgent need to implement the decisions taken by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Polish President Andrzej Duda during their talks in Beijing in June 2024, in particular the agreement on a cooperation protocol on zoning and regionalization of territories in the fight against highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The parties also exchanged views on the importance of developing efficient and economically competitive Eurasian transport corridors and Poland’s key role in this process.

They recognised the benefits of providing mutually beneficial services to increase the volumes of cargo carried by rail, sea and air transport, as well as from consolidating existing and potential routes and supply chains.

The parties expressed their readiness to ensure the safety and continuity of China-Europe freight rail service. They also noted their common interest in developing direct air routes and balanced growth of competitive air transportation between China and Poland.

The ministers welcomed the bilateral economic dialogue of the working group on ensuring unimpeded trade and the standing working group on investment promotion, jointly established by the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology of Poland and the Ministry of Commerce of China. Both groups operate within the framework of the joint commission on economic cooperation, and the parties agreed to hold the next meeting of the commission as soon as possible.

The parties recognized the potential of Chinese-Polish trade and economic cooperation and agreed that efforts should be focused on the sustainable development of bilateral trade and diversification of the range of goods and services.

The parties discussed China's issuance of licenses for the export of rare earth metals to Poland, and also confirmed the need to strengthen contacts and dialogue between the export control departments of the two countries and actively promote trade in dual-use goods in accordance with the rules.

Based on the premise of ensuring biological security, the parties will, in accordance with laws and regulations, advance work to lift bans related to animal epidemics, and jointly promote the entry of Polish agricultural and food products into the Chinese market, thereby contributing to the further expansion of the scope of bilateral trade in these categories of goods.

The parties expressed their willingness to further expand mutual investments. In particular, they acknowledged Poland’s commitment to developing the full value chain of its own electric vehicle industry, building on the country’s potential as Europe’s largest exporter of lithium-ion batteries, and agreed to encourage enterprises from both sides to seek opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation in expanding the Polish electric vehicle sector in accordance with commercial principles.

The parties agreed that such cooperation is highly sought after, given the two countries’ climate commitments and the green transition processes in their economies.

Considering the current positive dynamics in the area of humanitarian contacts between the two countries and the noticeable growth in bilateral tourist flow, the parties decided to further stimulate cooperation in the field of tourism.

The parties recognized the importance of China's visa-free policy for the sustainable growth of the tourism industry.

The two sides decided to further encourage cooperation between tourism organizations and their participation in tourism fairs. They also promised to support in-depth exchanges and practical cooperation in the cultural field.

The parties assessed the results of the work of existing mechanisms of bilateral consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries, such as the strategic dialogue at the level of deputy foreign ministers.

The ministers reached an agreement in principle to continue holding meetings of the intergovernmental commission on cooperation every two years on a rotational basis.

The next plenary meeting of the intergovernmental commission on cooperation will be held in Beijing in 2027. It will assess the implementation of the Action Plan for Strengthening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Poland /for the period 2024-2027/. –0–

Humanitarian Action Today: Funding Crisis and Security Threats

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

September 15, 2025 Humanitarian aid

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher warned on Monday of a massive funding crisis for humanitarian work around the world, a situation he said was being exacerbated by rising violence against aid workers.

"The era of indifference and impunity"

He noted that funding levels were down sharply from last year. "We've only received 19 percent of what we need. That's 40 percent less than last year," Fletcher said.

"It's terrible and it makes our era an era of indifference," he added.

Budget cuts, he said, are forcing UN agencies to set tough priorities. This year, $29 billion is planned to save 114 million lives. Fletcher noted that this amount is just one percent of global military spending in 2025.

The emergency relief coordinator drew attention to the rising number of casualties among humanitarian workers. Last year, more than 380 people died, and 270 deaths have already been recorded in 2025 alone.

Fletcher warned of the normalisation of violence against aid workers, calling the situation an “era of impunity”. He stressed the importance of asking questions about the origins of the weapons used in these attacks.

"Where do these weapons come from that are killing us and those we serve? They don't come from nowhere," he said.

Crisis situations around the world

Speaking about the situation in Gaza, Fletcher said that more than half a million residents of the strip are already suffering from catastrophic hunger, and the number of hungry people could exceed 640,000 in the coming weeks.

"We can stop this. Women, old people, children of Gaza cannot be fed with statements of concern," he said.

Fletcher recalled that during the ceasefire earlier this year, thousands of trucks carrying humanitarian aid were able to enter the Strip, which he said was proof that with access, a lot of people could be helped.

The emergency relief coordinator stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire, the opening of crossings, safe passage within Gaza, and the release of hostages.

He called what is happening in Sudan the world's largest humanitarian crisis. More than half a million people are already in conditions close to starvation, and 30 million need help. In the besieged city of El Fasher, about 900,000 people are in a critical situation.

In Syria, Fletcher said, humanitarian responses need to be balanced with long-term development to reduce the population's dependence on aid.

He spoke about his visit to Haiti, where gang violence and mass displacement have increased. Of particular concern, Fletcher said, is the rise in gender-based violence.

The Emergency Relief Coordinator stressed the role of women in humanitarian operations in Afghanistan: “Women humanitarian workers and the women we work with in the country are absolutely indispensable… They are under even more pressure, more challenges in their work, and this is unacceptable. We cannot do our work without them. We cannot operate without them.”

In closing, he noted that the situation in Yemen is complicated not only by the lack of funds and security threats, but also by the detention of humanitarian workers. “This is unacceptable,” Fletcher stressed.

IAEA chief urges countries to reaffirm commitment to nuclear non-proliferation

September 15, 2025 Peace and security

Addressing delegates to the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi called on states to reaffirm their commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

Grossi stressed that support for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the agency itself is now of utmost importance, as the conference is taking place against the backdrop of increasing terrorist attacks, growing armed conflicts and weakening nuclear controls.

The agency's head spoke about the IAEA's work to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and the peaceful uses of nuclear technology – from treating cancer and ensuring food security to monitoring plastic pollution, diagnosing diseases and developing artificial intelligence.

Challenges and achievements

Grossi noted with satisfaction that Syria agreed to work closely with the agency this year and that an agreement was reached last week with Iran to resume technical measures to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear developments.

As for Ukraine, where nuclear facilities are under threat due to the conflict, the agency, according to its director, has sent more than 200 missions there and is present at all nuclear power plants.

However, he continued, challenges remain: North Korea is developing its nuclear weapons program, and some countries that still adhere to the NPT are discussing the possibility of revising it.

"Just imagine a world where there are 20 or 25 countries armed with nuclear weapons," he warned.

Nuclear technology for good

Three years ago, the IAEA launched its flagship Rays of Hope initiative, which has catalyzed real progress in cancer treatment. The program has built hospitals, purchased radiotherapy equipment, and trained specialists in 40 countries.

A joint programme with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Atoms4Food helps to strengthen food security and reduce the environmental impact of agriculture.

The IAEA chief also spoke about other initiatives of the agency, from the fight against plastic pollution to improving global preparedness for epidemics.

An optimistic outlook for the future

With the rise of artificial intelligence, Grossi says, “the future will be too exciting to miss.” Nuclear energy could power AI infrastructure, and AI could improve nuclear technology. In December, the IAEA will hold the first-ever symposium on this connection.

Another promising area is the development of thermonuclear energy, thanks to investments from both the public and private sectors.
