Tbilisi, December 31 (Xinhua) — Along with ensuring high economic growth in 2026, the Georgian government's priorities will remain creating new jobs, reducing poverty, and improving living standards, Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili said on Wednesday.

Speaking about the 2025 results, M. Kvrivishvili noted the country's significant economic achievements. According to her, the past year attracted historic investments totaling $6.6 billion, which will be used to implement major development projects in Tbilisi and Gonio. The creation of 24,000 new jobs is expected, as well as annual revenues of over $700 million to the state budget, which will have a direct impact on citizens' living standards.

The minister also mentioned the completion of a large-scale Georgian railway modernization project at the end of the year. She noted that the 1 billion lari ($371.1 million) investment will double the capacity of Georgia's railway infrastructure and strengthen its role as a transit and logistics hub in the region.

M. Kvrivishvili paid special attention to the record-breaking performance of tourism and aviation. Tourism revenue reached $3.7 billion, and passenger traffic at all three international airports reached its highest level ever. The minister attributed these results to the government's policy of promoting Georgia's image, expanding the network of direct flights, and attracting new international airlines.

According to the Minister of Economy, forecasts for 2026 remain positive. Among the key tasks, she cited continued high economic growth, the implementation of major infrastructure projects, the completion of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, the transition of the Anaklia deep-water port to the active construction phase, and the further development of the energy sector.

RUDN University, along with the rest of the world, is almost upon the threshold of the new year 2026. Looking back on the past year, we have much to remember and be proud of. We're sharing some of the university's achievements in the form of quotes.

The University's International Service and the Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies admitted 5,594 international students from 140 countries to RUDN University in the 2025 admissions campaign, setting a record for the university's history. This year, the Olympiad movement received a powerful boost to identify and attract talented young people from abroad. Over 15,000 international students participated in the RUDN University Open Olympiad, which resulted in the selection of over 1,700 winners and runners-up from 143 countries. Nine hundred foreign students received the right to study at RUDN University under the Russian Government quota.

Moreover, in the year marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, RUDN University gained a new friend – Patrice's daughter, Juliana. Speaking at the international academic conference "Russia and Africa: Legacy of the Past, Opportunities of the Present, Prospects for the Future," Juliana expressed her hope for our university's continued development, so that more Africans could receive an education at our university and spread the fundamental knowledge, values, and ideals of justice and equality acquired in Russia throughout the African continent.

On October 30 of this year, RUDN University hosted an international forum of foreign graduates of Soviet and Russian universities. The event was organized with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science in partnership with MIREA – Russian Technological University. The forum was attended by over 100 leaders of graduate associations of Russian (Soviet) universities from 50 countries. Forum participants developed proposals to enhance cooperation between associations and Russian universities in education, science, promoting the Russian language, and preserving traditional values. The first results of these proposals are planned to be discussed in 2026 at a forum of foreign graduates of Russian (Soviet) universities, which will be attended by over 2,000 international graduates.

Marina Rekets

Vice-Rector for International Affairs at RUDN University

In 2025, RUDN University's research activities reached a qualitatively new level. Total funding from R&D (NTU R&D) amounted to 1,124,291,800 rubles. The university implemented seven major projects within state programs and two projects for regional governments. These projects included breakthrough research in medicine, agricultural science, urban ecology, and plasma physics. University teams implemented three megagrants from the Russian Science Foundation in the areas of smart urban technologies, the development of new antibiotics for agriculture, and personalized therapy for soft tissue sarcomas. For the first time in 2025, we ensured the international commercialization of intellectual property—from enhanced oil recovery technologies to biotechnology for food tech. This confirmed that RUDN University research is in demand by the real economy not only in Russia but also abroad (in Kazakhstan and Iran).

The policy on publications and scientific journals has proven successful. Since this year, 27 of 33 journals affiliated with RUDN University are included in the national "White List." Ten of them have been included in the first, highest tier. From 2020 to 2025, the number of first- and second-quartile publications in the international Scopus database increased almost 50 percent—from 944 to 1,375 articles (a 46% increase). RUDN University authors prepared over 1,000 publications in 2025 in collaboration with international research partners. We have flexibly responded to changes in the national research landscape, resulting in a new version of the R&D and Innovation Development Program through 2030: the number of formal reporting indicators has been reduced, and a stronger emphasis has been placed on creating conditions conducive to the effective work of scientists. At the same time, we have expanded the incentive package for authors of scientific publications by increasing the categories of supported journals and the amounts of compensation for articles.

A significant achievement of the year in student science was the opening of the "Mathematics for Promising Young People" Scientific Development Center at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty. It is focused on developing a mentoring system and training talented young people. The results are already leading to victories in international and national competitions and building a strong pool of expert-level talent. The success of our scientific accelerator is encouraging: this year, 25 RUDN University student startups became finalists. Their projects range from helping people with diabetes, developing mindfulness, and creating quest tours to networking and AI-based digital services. But all the startups share a common mission: to improve people's quality of life, reduce the time spent on routine tasks, and empower them to feel truly alive.

Petr Dokukin

Head of the Scientific Department of RUDN University

RUDN's total endowment (endowment intended for non-commercial use) increased by 133% compared to the same period last year, and more and more donors are joining the project. The largest donation was 2 million rubles, bringing the total endowment to 8.6 million rubles. For the first time in the university's history, endowment income was used to pay stipends to outstanding students at the 50th RUDN University Academic Reunion.

The RUDN University Development Fund has become a unique platform for internships for university students. Thirty-six students from Russia and 16 other countries—Armenia, Afghanistan, Haiti, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Belarus, Moldova, Senegal, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea—have learned about the fundamentals of institutional philanthropy and the university's endowment. Many of them learned for the first time what an endowment is and how it works.

Among the foundation's key events is the conclusion of an agreement on practical training for RUDN University students majoring in economics and law. The foundation also provided funding for a project to equip the RUDN University eSports club and supported the organization and holding of the IV International Scientific Conference "For the Sustainable Development of Civilization: Cooperation, Science, Education, and Technology."

Maria Zhukova

Advisor to the Rector's Office, Executive Director of the RUDN University Development Fund

2025 was a very eventful and significant year for our university. At the very beginning of the year, RUDN University celebrated its 65th anniversary. As part of this major celebration, over 300 students performed on our country's main stage—the State Kremlin Palace. A separate series of events throughout the year was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. I personally particularly remember the "Victory Waltz" on our university's main square, where 100 students from over 25 countries, dressed in 1940s-style military uniforms, created an incredible atmosphere.

I'd also like to highlight the victories and achievements of our students in significant competitions. Hamza Amro (Syria, Engineering Academy, fourth-year undergraduate student, Architecture) won the "Mr. Student of Moscow 2025" competition. Alexander Mironenko (Russia, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, first-year master's student, History) won the Grand Prix in the "Student of the Year Moscow" competition and first place in the "Patriot of the Year" category. More than 130 RUDN University students have won scholarships from the President and the Government of the Russian Federation.

Speaking of memorable dates, it's impossible not to mention the Rally of Excellent Students—this year marked its 50th anniversary. Finally, I'd like to say how gratifying it is to witness the RUDN University tradition of the New Year's Friendship of Peoples Ball, which has been held for the third year in a row in Pashkov House. This celebratory event near the Kremlin is undoubtedly the best reward for students.

Mikhail Katsarsky

Vice-Rector for Student Affairs

2025 was a truly record-breaking year for RUDN University in terms of admissions and the attention it received from applicants. More than 200,000 applications are not just a number, but a testament to the university's credibility. This year, we enrolled 11,553 people across all levels and modes of study, including secondary vocational education. 642 high-scorers enrolled, and two high-scorers in the 300s enrolled in the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence.

We are particularly pleased with the increase in the number of Olympiad winners admitted: the number of those admitted without entrance examinations has increased by a third, and the number of winners and runners-up of the All-Russian School Olympiad has grown by 52% over three years. Moreover, the range of applicants is expanding—for the first time, we have accepted Olympiad winners in aviation engineering and jurisprudence. We also note RUDN's own Olympiad for school students as an important tool for identifying talent. In the 2024/2025 academic year, more than 6,700 schoolchildren participated in the selection round—more than double the number from last year. While the number of winners and runners-up has remained stable, our most important result has increased: the number of applicants admitted based on Olympiad results has increased from 38 to 51. This means that the Olympiad is increasingly becoming a viable means of admission to university for motivated and strong applicants.

At the same time, interest in targeted training has grown almost 3.5-fold: the number of applications has increased from 255 to 861 over three years. All this points to one thing: RUDN is now perceived as a university of opportunity, where people come for a strong education, prospects, and tangible results.

Interest in RUDN University this year was evident not only in admissions figures but also in live interactions with applicants: over 100,000 people attended our open days. This demonstrates that students are choosing the university consciously—they come, ask questions, and see the campus and educational opportunities firsthand. Furthermore, we value not only the quality of admissions but also the university's presence in the life of the city and the country. In 2025, a branded RUDN University train began operating on the Sokolnicheskaya Line, symbolizing the university's openness and recognition.

December 31, 2025 UN

After weeks of intensive negotiations and the launch of one of the most important reforms – the UN-80 initiative – the General Assembly approved the UN regular budget for 2026 in the amount of $3.45 billion.

The budget, approved by the UN's 193 member states on Tuesday, covers three key areas of the Organization's work: peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

While the approved budget is approximately $200 million higher than the Secretary-General's proposed UN80 reform, it is approximately seven percent below the 2025 budget.

The UN budget finances the Organization's core activities, including its political and humanitarian aspects, international justice and law, regional development cooperation, human rights, and public information.

The regular budget is separate from the UN peacekeeping budget, which operates on a financial cycle from 1 July to 30 June, while the regular budget follows the calendar year.

A difficult consensus

Addressing delegates at the conclusion of the negotiations of the Fifth Committee, the Assembly's main administrative and budgetary body, UN Comptroller General Chandramouli Ramanathan commended the Committee for having managed to bring the complex and arduous budget process to a timely conclusion.

"It's been a testing year," he said, noting that the Secretariat was tasked with preparing the entire budget in less than six weeks.

Ramanathan emphasized that, despite the often difficult negotiations, the Committee had managed to reach consensus. "This is truly remarkable, and you shouldn't underestimate it," he said, addressing delegates.

Upcoming tasks

The Comptroller General warned that the adoption of the budget marks the beginning, not the end, of a difficult phase of its implementation.

As of January 1, 2026, he noted, 2,900 positions will be eliminated. More than a thousand employee layoffs have already been officially processed. This requires careful consideration and significant administrative effort, as it is necessary to ensure the payment of salaries and benefits to affected personnel during the transition period.

Chandramouli Ramanathan also welcomed the "record level of potential advance payments by Member States" towards the 2026 budget and called for continued timely payment of assessed contributions.

Hefei, December 31 (Xinhua) — Russian specialists are actively participating in joint projects with their Chinese counterparts on controlled thermonuclear fusion, making significant contributions to research, and noting the complementary nature of bilateral scientific and technical cooperation in this strategically important area. This was reported by representatives of the scientific community working in China.

On the "Island of Science" in the suburbs of Hefei (the administrative capital of Anhui Province, eastern China), where the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is located, even late at night you can find Victoria Saklakova at work. She holds the position of manager of the International Cooperation Department at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences. Her responsibilities include intensive interaction with Russian and international experts, particularly with the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) agency in Russia.

The "Island of Science," covering an area of no more than 3 square kilometers, is renowned for its unique research facilities, including the experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), also known as China's "artificial sun." More than 300 foreign scientists visit the island annually, a significant number of whom are from Russia.

Russia is the birthplace of tokamak technology and possesses extensive technological expertise, as well as nuclear power plant resources for testing next-generation materials for thermonuclear fusion. China, meanwhile, is demonstrating growing scientific prowess and possesses unique research equipment. This creates ideal conditions for mutually beneficial cooperation, emphasized Victoria Saklakova.

As a reminder, on November 24, in Hefei, the Chinese Academy of Sciences officially launched the international scientific program "Burning Plasma" and presented its BEST research program to the global fusion community for the first time. Anatoly Krasilnikov, director of the ITER Project Center, a private institution of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, attended the ceremony. He, along with scientists from other countries, signed the "Hefei Declaration on Fusion." The document proclaims the principles of openness, resource sharing, and a commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation, encouraging researchers from around the world to work in China.

ITER is one of the largest and most significant international scientific projects of our time, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of commercializing nuclear fusion energy. China is a key contributor to the ITER project and maintains stable collaboration with more than 120 scientific institutions from 50 countries. Russia is also making a significant contribution to ITER's implementation.

Fusion research is extremely complex. Today, it's necessary not only to collide and combine ideas and technologies, but also to develop interpersonal interactions and create joint teams. This is crucial, stated Anatoly Krasilnikov.

He noted that Russia supplied 29 systems for ITER, demonstrating its leadership in these areas. China also manufactured numerous advanced systems for the project.

"Combining our best practices will double our overall potential. Sharing knowledge to accelerate progress is a natural and wise path. Such cooperation is essential," the Russian scientist believes.

He expressed interest in participating in the BEST project and his willingness to invite Chinese institutes to work on Russian nuclear fusion programs.

The Director of the Russian ITER Agency placed particular emphasis on the importance of training a new generation of scientists: "We are very interested in young Russian researchers participating in work in China, and our Chinese colleagues participating in experiments and developments in Russia. This will lay the foundation for future success."

Beijing, December 31 (Xinhua) — On New Year's Eve, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a New Year's address, which was broadcast on China Media Group (CMG) channels and online media outlets. The full text of the New Year's address is below.

Comrades, friends, ladies and gentlemen! Good evening! The old year is leaving, and the new year brings new hopes and beginnings. On this wonderful occasion, from Beijing, I congratulate you all on this new year of happiness!

The year 2025 marks the completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan. The past five years will be remembered for their persistent work and bold creativity. Despite difficulties and challenges, all assigned tasks have been accomplished with excellence, and the country is confidently advancing along the path of Chinese modernization. Reaching yet another milestone, the economy is expected to reach 140 trillion yuan. Not only are our country's record-breaking economic, technological, defense, and overall strength admirable, but also the beauty of the "emerald waters and green mountains," which undoubtedly makes our compatriots feel happier and safer. These years have been far from easy, and the successes have not been easy. Thanks to millions of tireless hands and warm hearts, China continues to develop rapidly. I pay tribute to everyone who labors for our common homeland.

This year is also memorable for the solemn celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People's Victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and the establishment of Taiwan Liberation Memorial Day. These glorious victories commemorate the fallen heroes, inspire the sons and daughters of China to remember history, honor the memory of their fallen heroes, preserve peace, and open up the future, uniting their majestic forces in the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

We have made innovation the driver of high-quality development. Science and technology are deeply integrated with industry. Innovative developments are springing up like mushrooms after rain. Serious competition has unfolded among artificial intelligence models. Independent chip development has achieved breakthrough development, and China has become one of the leaders in terms of the growth rate of its innovative potential. The Tianwen-2 probe has been launched into deep space. Construction has begun on a hydroelectric power station in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. The first aircraft carrier equipped with an electromagnetic catapult has been commissioned. A Chinese humanoid robot has learned kung fu techniques. Drones have painted luminous patterns in the night sky. Innovation not only generates new levels of productive force but also enriches our lives, making them brighter and more interesting.

Our souls are nourished by the brilliant Chinese culture. Museum boom trends are gaining momentum, interest in intangible cultural heritage is growing, and the World Heritage list is expanding to include Chinese sites. Sun Wukong and Nezha are conquering nearly the entire world. Elements of traditional clothing have become leading fashion trends for young people. The cultural and tourism market is experiencing a real boom. City and village super leagues are enjoying widespread popularity. Winter sports spark incredible passion. The harmonious blend of tradition and modernity breathes new life and sparkle into centuries-old Chinese culture.

Together, we make life better and better. Having participated in the celebrations in Xizang and Xinjiang, I witnessed firsthand how peacefully and harmoniously people of different nationalities live, from the snowy plateau to the foothills of the Tianshan Mountains, and how united they are like pomegranate seeds. Presenting snow-white khadak, people express their love for their homeland and praise happiness through the most fervent songs and dances. There are no trivial matters in people's lives; every detail is important and close to our hearts. Thus, over the course of the year, the rights and interests of workers in new forms of employment have received additional protection. The modernization of old buildings creates amenities for the elderly. The monthly allowance for families with children has been increased by an additional 300 yuan. The comfort of simple everyday life, the changing seasons. When the life of every family is filled with happiness and prosperity, the brightest future awaits our homeland.

We embrace the entire world with open hearts. The Tianjin SCO Summit and the Global Women's Summit were successfully held. A special customs regime was launched for the Hainan Free Trade Port. This year, China announced a new Nationally Determined Contribution to address climate change. Following the "Three Global Initiatives," I launched the Global Governance Initiative, which aims to shape a more equitable and rational system of global governance. The modern world is experiencing turbulence and upheaval, and the flames of war still rage in some regions. China resolutely stands on the right side of history and is ready to join forces with all countries to ensure peace and development on the planet, in the name of building a community with a shared future for humanity.

I recently attended the opening of the National Sports Games and cannot help but admire the mutual support and coordinated development of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. We must firmly implement the "one country, two systems" policy and support the efforts of Hong Kong and Macao to integrate into the grand national development plan in the interests of maintaining their long-term prosperity and stability. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are blood brothers, and the reunification of China is historically inevitable, and no one will be able to prevent it!

A strong country requires a strong Communist Party. A campaign to deeply implement the spirit of the Eight Points of the CPC Central Committee allows us to strengthen strict internal Party governance, confidently wage the anti-corruption campaign, and pursue revolutionary self-transformation, thereby gradually improving the Party and government's working style. It is important to remain true to our original aspirations and persistently work to answer the question of "how to break free from historical cycles," continuing our diligent work worthy of the people and our times.

The 15th Five-Year Plan begins in 2026. As the Chinese proverb goes, "Whoever wants success must think through every step." We must focus on our goals, confidently advance high-quality development based on all our achievements, deepen reform and opening up in all areas, promote shared prosperity, and usher in a new chapter of the Chinese miracle.

When a dream calls, any distance is close. Across the vastness—with a broad stride. May the coming year bring horse-like speed, energy, and endurance into our lives. May every day be a step toward a shared dream, happiness, and victory in great endeavors.

The New Year's sun will soon rise. Let's join us in wishing our beloved Motherland prosperity and well-being. May it bask in the morning light! I wish you all joy, success, and the fulfillment of all your wishes! -0-

Essay: 2025 through the eyes of Russians

Moscow, December 31 (Xinhua) — Ahead of the upcoming New Year 2026, Xinhua asked passersby on the streets of Moscow to find out what the past year was like for them and what they wish for the new year.

"Happy," "successful," "fulfilling"—these are the adjectives many Xinhua interviewees used to describe 2025. "I was happy this year because all my children were healthy, everyone was working, studying, and doing what they loved," Olga said with a warm smile. Now retired, she previously worked as an elementary school teacher for over ten years. Olga is well acquainted with many Chinese students who come to study in Russia and communicates with them frequently. She says this interaction has also become a source of great happiness for her.

For Alexandra, who has been studying Chinese for three years, success stems primarily from her progress in mastering the language. "2025 was a very eventful year. I attended several Chinese-related events, which filled me with immense happiness," she said. For her, the happiness of the past year stemmed not only from family joys but also from her professional successes.

However, for some of Xinhua's interviewees, 2025 had a different flavor. "Unknown," "difficult," and "many challenges" were also mentioned in their responses. For 32-year-old Ilya, 2025 was a time of great trials. Working as a procurement specialist, he faced a series of changes, including a new position, new responsibilities, and a number of professional challenges that needed to be overcome for career advancement. "The volume of work increased exponentially, plus the responsibility increased, resulting in increased anxiety, and I had to somehow cope with it," he noted.

The feeling of anxiety is familiar not only to Ilya but to many in Russia. According to a popular vote, Russian internet users chose "anxiety" as the word of the year.

"It was a mixed year, with many unpleasant surprises. But there were also many good things, and I learned a lot. I learned from various situations," shared 19-year-old Moscow student Stepan. The young man is studying to be a jeweler and dreams of opening his own workshop. However, the path to his dream has proven particularly challenging this year. He hopes to achieve success in his field in the future. "I'm trying to work on myself and perfect my craft," Stepan added confidently.

Although each of Xinhua's interviewees described 2025 differently, when asked about their New Year's wish, the overwhelming majority cited the same word: "peace." "Peace. It's peace throughout the world," answered Anton from Belgorod. "Peace. I think that's the common wish of many people lately," added his wife, Elizaveta. "I believe there will be peace soon," Stepan expressed hope.

By expressing their hopes and dreams, Russians believe in their possibility. Olga sincerely wished everyone for all their wishes to come true. "May everyone find happiness and love. After all, it's impossible to live without love, so may everyone love and be loved," she said.

Mission: social projects and work with bloggers In 2025, Gazprom-Media Holding continued to consistently implement the PRO corporate responsibility program. Among the priorities are the production of socially significant content, information support for NGOs and charitable foundations, targeted assistance to SVO participants and their families, as well as care for the older generation. This year, the annual “Special Talents” competition, aimed at finding and supporting gifted children with special needs throughout Russia, received more than 4 thousand applications from 80 regions of our country and 6 regions of the Republic of Belarus. The TV-3 charity marathon “New Year’s Miracles” has helped 55 children over 10 years, collecting almost 80 million rubles. GPM Radio demonstrates a special strength in uniting the country. His all-Russian project “The Country Sings Katyusha!” on Victory Day covered 300 cities, turning into a nationwide event. A special role is given to the Insight People production center, which unites more than 2,700 bloggers in 89 regions of the country. This community has a direct conversation with the audience in the language of modern media, which was confirmed by the multi-format media marathon “Memory Card” for the 80th anniversary of the Victory. It combined the military drama “Platform 19/44” about child heroes, the documentary “Letter of Vera” about the feat of the home front, a series of videos and a touching music video “Dad, we are with you.” The Holding’s digital assets also implemented a number of inclusive and cultural projects: with the support of RUTUBE, popular animated series were adapted for hearing-impaired children, PREMIER implemented initiatives with the Pushkin Museum and charitable foundations.

Russian Cinema: National Stories' Success at the Box Office. This ongoing dialogue with millions of viewers is naturally reflected in big-screen cinema. The Holding's creative companies translate success into box office sales, demonstrating the power of national narratives. Of the nine blockbuster films, six were released by Central Partnership. The biographical drama "The Prophet: The Story of Alexander Pushkin" surpassed the 1.6 billion ruble mark, while the folk comedy "Batya 2: Grandfather" and the film "August" grossed over 1.5 billion rubles.
