XI'AN, January 28 (Xinhua) — Northwest China's Shaanxi Province will strive to improve the construction of the SCO Agricultural Technology Exchange and Training Demonstration Base and deepen cooperation with Central Asian countries in agricultural innovation in 2026, according to a work report by the Shaanxi provincial government.

In addition, in 2026, the province will continue its efforts to create an economic ring based on international railway freight transport services between China and Europe.

At the annual session of the provincial People's Congress, it was noted that local authorities had made efforts to fully implement the outcomes of the China-Central Asia Summit related to Shaanxi Province in 2025. Specifically, the first China-Central Asia international tourist train service was launched from Xi'an (Shaanxi Province) to Almaty. The total number of trains departing from or arriving in Xi'an on China-Europe routes reached 6,037, an increase of 21.1 percent year-on-year.

Data show that Shaanxi Province's total foreign trade turnover increased by 18.5 percent year-on-year to 537.9 billion yuan (about $77.43 billion), while the province's trade with five Central Asian countries increased by 37.2 percent. -0-

Moscow, January 28 (Xinhua) — Two Russian citizens from the crew of the US-detained tanker Mariner have been released and are en route to Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova announced on Wednesday.

"Two Russian sailors have been released and are on their way home to Russia," TASS quoted her as saying.

US authorities seized the tanker Mariner in the North Atlantic on January 7 for violating US sanctions. The Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed the US's references to its own "sanctions legislation" as unfounded and stated that unilateral restrictive measures by the US and other Western countries are "illegitimate and cannot serve as justification for attempts to establish jurisdiction and seize vessels on the high seas."

In addition to Russians, there were citizens of Ukraine, Georgia, and India on board the tanker. –0–

On January 27, as part of the International KVN Team Festival "KiViN-2026," the Plenary Session of the 5th All-Russian Forum "KVN – School of Leaders" was held, co-organized by the State University of Management.

The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Andrey Omelchuk, Rector of the State University of Management Vladimir Stroyev, General Director of the TTO "AMiK" Alexander Maslyakov, as well as heads of leading universities and federal youth projects.

The central theme of the meeting was systemic cooperation between the government, universities, and creative industries. During the discussion, KVN was presented not simply as a creative outlet, but as an effective educational tool. Experts noted that participation in the movement allows students to develop key management competencies: leadership, stress resilience, teamwork, and decision-making skills on a tight deadline.

Particular attention was paid to the results of the Methodological Center for the Study and Development of the KVN Movement (the Center), which opened at the State University of Management exactly one year ago. Since then, the Center has become a full-fledged "foothold" for universities across the country, developing a methodological foundation and helping to build high-quality youth outreach, with the State University of Management cementing its status as a flagship of this process.

In 2025, the Center held two All-Russian KVN Schools, 24 online seminars, and several large forums, reaching a total of approximately 2,500 people. Plans include further expanding educational programs for KVN leaders, strengthening interregional ties, and developing the game as a key social asset for Russian students.

Let's remember that GUU is also known for its KVN League and its teams, one of which will compete in the Major League this season.

WASHINGTON, January 28 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to cut off American aid to Iraq if Nouri al-Maliki returns to the post of prime minister.

Due to the policies and ideology that N. al-Maliki adheres to, “if he is elected, the United States will no longer help Iraq,” D. Trump wrote on his page on the social network Truth Social.

N. al-Maliki, who served as prime minister from 2006 to 2014, was nominated on Saturday by Iraq's main Shiite bloc in parliament to form a government.

Rosneft scientists have conducted a unique study of ancient* oil varieties.

Geochemists from the Rosneft Research Institute in Tomsk have published** the results of a large-scale study of ancient oil varieties, conducted over 30 years. The findings are important for rethinking the history of hydrocarbon formation. A new understanding of oil structure will improve the accuracy of oil and gas potential assessments and the efficiency of reservoir development.

The aim of this unprecedented study, both in duration and data volume, was to investigate alkylbenzenes, a key component of oil that influences gasoline quality. From 1998 to 2025, specialists from the Tomsk-based corporate institute analyzed over 500 grades of oil from 11 oil provinces in Russia and abroad.

Thanks to advances in technology, a machine learning approach has been used to study the composition of alkylbenzenes in oil samples over the past two years. The developed models have accurately determined the origin of the oil and the conditions under which it formed.

In a number of ancient oil grades in Eastern Siberia (the Kuyumbinskoye and Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoye fields, developed by Rosneft Oil Company enterprises), a high concentration of tert-butylbenzene, a substance previously considered uncharacteristic of such geological formations, has been identified for the first time.

The study's results help to more accurately determine the original (parent) source of the oil: tert-butylbenzene indicates that the oil belongs to the Riphean period ("ancient" grades). Source data are used in basin modeling to predict oil migration, the potential for oil and gas potential in the area, and approaches to field development.

* Oil is extracted from rocks with a geological age of 1.1 billion to 5 million years – from the Meso-Neoproterozoic to the Cenozoic.

** The article “Composition and distribution of C3- and C4-alkylbenzenes in oil and oil source rocks from the Meso-Neoproterozoic to Cenozoic” by Nikolai Oblasov, Ilya Eftor, Ivan Goncharov and Svetlana Fadeeva was published in the authoritative international journal Organic Geochemistry, which specializes in research on all aspects of organic geochemistry.

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday responded to a letter from veterans of the Zimbabwean national liberation struggle.

In his message, he noted that in their youth, the veterans dedicated themselves to the great cause of national liberation, left their homelands and established deep friendship and camaraderie with China in the struggle.

To this day, they remain deeply committed to China-Zimbabwe and China-Africa friendship, which is deeply touching, the Chinese President said.

He emphasized that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and African countries, and is also the Year of China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges. According to the Chinese leader, over the past 70 years, China has remained a good comrade and partner to Africa in its quest for national liberation, development, and rejuvenation.

By respecting and supporting each other, China and its African friends have weathered difficult times together and embarked on a new path of modernization together, Xi Jinping noted, adding that China is willing to use the implementation of the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FCAC) as an opportunity to work with its African partners to develop traditional friendship and build an even brighter future for China-Africa relations.

The Chinese leader also expressed hope that the veterans would inspire more African youth to devote themselves to the cause of developing China-Zimbabwe and China-Africa friendship.

Since its founding, the People's Republic of China has strongly supported Africa in its struggle against imperialism and colonialism and in its quest for national liberation.

Recently, veterans of the national liberation struggle in Zimbabwe sent a letter to President Xi Jinping, expressing gratitude for China's invaluable support for Zimbabwe's national liberation and highly commending the brilliant achievements of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people under the leadership of President Xi Jinping in the new era.

The veterans expressed pride in the all-weather Zimbabwean-Chinese community with a shared destiny, vowing to dedicate themselves to developing friendship between the two countries.
