More than 26 million children across Ethiopia have been vaccinated in the fourth round of the national polio vaccination campaign, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The campaign utilized a new oral poliovirus vaccine (nOPV2). In some areas of the country, vaccination was combined with the bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) to boost the population's immune defenses.

Ethiopia's Minister of Health, Mekdes Daba, reaffirmed the country's commitment to the eventual eradication of polio: "As a country certified free of wild poliovirus since 2017, we will work together to complete the final step toward polio eradication and fulfill our global commitments. No child will be left unvaccinated."

During the campaign, she said, health workers are monitoring cases of acute flaccid paralysis, identifying previously unvaccinated children, screening children for nutrition and growth, and monitoring for Marburg fever.

Speaking on behalf of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, Professor Francis Kasolo, WHO Representative in Ethiopia, welcomed the government's leadership, including the decision to combine bOPV and nOPV2 in priority districts. He emphasized that this will accelerate the interruption of poliovirus type 2 transmission and strengthen Ethiopia's ability to combat other variants of the virus.

Ethiopia conducted four rounds of nOPV2 immunization – one nationwide and three regionally. The campaigns were organized by the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Public Health with support from the WHO, UNICEF, and other partners.

These efforts aim to stop the circulation of the variant poliovirus (a mutated form of the wild poliovirus capable of spreading among underimmunized populations), address vaccination gaps, and strengthen surveillance systems. Ethiopia continues to strengthen monitoring of vaccine-preventable diseases, expand cross-border coordination and collaboration, and strengthen routine immunization programs. Initiative partners reaffirmed their commitment to continued support to ensure a polio-free world.

Beijing, January 29 (Xinhua) — China intends to strengthen strategic cooperation with Russia and support each other on issues affecting their core interests and key concerns, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said on Thursday.

Jiang Bin made the statement at a press conference while answering a question about a recent video call between the defense ministers of the two countries.

He noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Chinese-Russian partnership and strategic cooperation and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation between China and the Russian Federation.

Chinese-Russian relations have maintained a high level of development, and exchanges and cooperation between the militaries of the two countries at all levels and in various fields have yielded fruitful results, which plays an important role in maintaining international and regional stability, Jiang Bin noted.

The official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Defense added that China intends to work with Russia to make new contributions to deepening the Sino-Russian comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination in the new era, and to continuously inject positive energy into global security and stability.

Beijing, January 29 (Xinhua) — China hopes the United States will develop an objective and rational perception of China. This was stated on Thursday by Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin, who called on the US to stop hyping up the so-called "Chinese military threat."

Jiang Bin made these statements while responding to media inquiries regarding the US National Defense Strategy 2026, published by the US Department of Defense. This document states that the United States will deter China in the Asia-Pacific region through force, not confrontation, and that it is necessary to establish extensive exchanges with the Chinese military to maintain strategic stability and ensure a dignified peace.

The document also states that the United States will build a deterrence and defense system on the “first island chain” to ensure military balance in the region.

“Facts have proven that any attempt to contain or block China is doomed to failure,” said a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman.

Noting that adhering to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation is the correct path for cooperation between China and the United States, Jiang Bin noted that China is willing to work with the United States to promote the stable development of bilateral relations while firmly safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests.

Jiang Bin called on the United States to stop inciting bloc confrontation, prevent discrepancies between words and deeds on issues affecting China's core interests, and promote the healthy and stable development of relations between the armed forces of the two countries through real actions.

Beijing, January 29 (Xinhua) — The People's Liberation Army Navy and the China Coast Guard will safeguard national sovereignty and maintain peace in the South China Sea (SCS), Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said Thursday.

"We will continue to strictly fulfill our duty and mission to protect the seas and borders, and put into practice the concept of a maritime community with a shared future," Jiang Bin said at a press conference in response to a question on the matter.

A Chinese defense ministry spokesman recalled that on January 22, the Chinese Navy and the Chinese People's Liberation Army rescued 17 crew members from a Philippine vessel that sank in the South China Sea near China's Huangyan Island, and handed them over to the Philippine side on January 25.

However, as Jiang Bin noted, the Philippine Coast Guard spokesman, contrary to all expectations, used this humanitarian act to whip up propaganda, which was a despicable and dishonest act.

"The Chinese Navy and the BOC will make an even greater contribution to turning the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation," assured the official representative of the PRC Ministry of Defense.

Kyiv, January 29 (Xinhua) — Ukraine and Russia conducted the first exchange of bodies this year on Thursday. Petro Andryushchenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for the Study of the Occupation, announced this on Telegram.

According to him, Ukraine received the remains of 1,000 people and handed over the bodies of 38 victims to the Russian Federation.

Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War later confirmed the exchange of remains with Russia on Thursday.

The headquarters noted that, according to the Russian side, the 1,000 bodies handed over to Kyiv belong to Ukrainian servicemen. However, this information will be verified by law enforcement agencies in conjunction with expert institutions of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict, Kyiv and Moscow have regularly exchanged the remains of the fallen. The previous exchange took place in December of last year.

Paris, January 29 (Xinhua) — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday denied reports of a NATO-US agreement on Greenland.

"It's not an agreement," M. Frederiksen told French television channel France 2 when asked about US President Donald Trump's announcement in Davos that he had reached an agreement with NATO on Greenland.

In essence, the state is sovereign, its borders must be respected, as must the right of other peoples to self-determination, M. Frederiksen said in an interview.

If military means are used in Greenland, everything will come to a standstill, M. Frederiksen noted, adding that “it would go against everything we have built since the end of World War II.”

M. Frederiksen arrived in France on Wednesday together with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

French President Emmanuel Macron said at a joint press conference that the escalation of tensions with the United States over Greenland is a strategic alarm signal for Europe as a whole, while reaffirming France's solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.

Greenland, the world's largest island, is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Copenhagen retains control over Greenland's defense and foreign policy. Since returning to office in 2025, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "acquire" Greenland—a move Europe has repeatedly rejected.
