Algiers, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — The Algerian Western Mining Railway, Africa's first heavy-duty desert railway, has opened to traffic, improving Algeria's national rail network and boosting transport and economic development in the country's southwestern regions.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially launched the railway line at a ceremony held on Sunday in the southwestern province of Bechar.

The 950-km-long road, 575 km of which were built by the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and Algerian state-owned companies, is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by a Chinese company in Algeria.

More than 8,000 Chinese and Algerian workers completed the project in 24 months under challenging Sahara Desert conditions, achieving significant success and setting new records in local railway construction.

According to local media, the railway will be able to transport 50 million tons of iron ore per year, as well as meet the needs of passenger transportation, providing convenience for residents along the route. –0–

OSLO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Monday condemned the United States for its "condescending and divisive targeting" of the island.

In a statement released ahead of an emergency session of the Greenlandic parliament, he also stressed that continued US pressure on Greenland is “unacceptable.”

Greenland has found itself in a difficult situation over the past 14 months, the Prime Minister noted, pointing to repeated US statements, including recent ones, about its intention to establish control over the island.

Although talk of a possible military takeover has recently been disavowed, the United States continues to seek to annex Greenland and is looking for an opportunity to take control of the island, he said.

J.-F. Nielsen noted that such rhetoric comes not only from US President Donald Trump, but also from other key decision-makers and close allies. They are characterized by a "condescending and divisive focus" on Greenland and its people, the prime minister added.

The Greenlandic government has declared such attempts "unacceptable" and confirmed that the island is part of Denmark, he said.

J.-F. Nielsen also noted that, despite the tense situation, Greenland has begun dialogue with the United States through high-level official channels and his government will work to ensure that the negotiations produce “concrete results.” –0–

JERUSALEM, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — The Israeli and U.S. navies conducted joint exercises in the Red Sea on Sunday, the Israeli military said Monday, underscoring strengthened maritime cooperation as regional tensions with Iran continue to mount.

Israeli Navy ships and a US Navy destroyer that arrived in the Red Sea took part in the exercises, the military reported.

They said the exercises were part of ongoing strategic coordination between the Israeli navy and the US 5th Fleet, which is responsible for operations in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Oman.

The exercises took place amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, as Washington issued warnings to Tehran and strengthened its naval presence in the region.

London, February 3 (Xinhua) — Britain on Monday imposed a new round of sanctions against 10 Iranian individuals and one organization, accusing them of involvement in the suppression of recent protests in Iran, the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The restrictions reportedly targeted Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, Lorestan Province Police Chief Mohammad Reza Hashemifar, Public Security Police Chief Seyed Majid Feiz Jafari, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander in Fars Province Yadollah Bouali, and several other military and justice officials.

To date, the UK has imposed more than 550 sanctions measures on Iranian individuals and entities, including the IRGC as a whole, the statement said.

The current move follows recent similar decisions by the US and the EU.

Since late December, protests against the sharp devaluation of the rial have erupted across Iran. Over the course of several weeks, the initially peaceful demonstrations escalated into clashes, resulting in casualties and damage to public property, including mosques, government buildings, and banks.

Tehran accused the US and Israel of fomenting unrest. The Islamic Republic condemned the anti-Iran resolution adopted by the European Parliament as "intrusive." –0–

Minsk, February 3 /Xinhua/ — “Welcome to the first Chinese language class of the new 2026 semester!” Ren Yi, 30, from China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, confidently greets students of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture at the Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages (BSUL).

She's been living in Belarus for seven years now and is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in journalism at Belarusian State University. Ren Yi also has another role she's proud of: teaching Chinese.

In 2018, Ren Yi, having completed her bachelor's degree in China, came to Belarus for the first time as a volunteer Chinese teacher. Attracted by the country's rich cultural atmosphere, she decided to pursue her master's and doctoral studies there.

"During my studies, the Belarusian teachers showed me endless patience and attention. Their kindness and openness filled me with a sense of kindness and warmth. I was deeply touched and decided that I, too, wanted to become a bridge of friendship and cooperation between China and Belarus, to help more Belarusians better understand China," says Ren Yi.

"In my classes, I want to not only teach the language but also open a window into the culture for my students. I often think about how to help them truly experience the history, aesthetics, and warmth of Chinese characters. Therefore, I try to bring elements of China's intangible cultural heritage into the classroom," she says.

During the first class of the new semester, Ren Yi introduced the students to the Chinese art of fan painting. Young Belarusians, one after another, tried their hand at creating unique pieces and marveling at the depth and richness of Chinese culture.

"Painting fans is so interesting! Wu Ren Yi always introduces us to the vibrant and diverse Chinese culture and makes us fall in love with China. I really enjoy her classes," notes BSUFL student Anastasia Adamovich.

"Ren Yi's classes are very interesting: she explains complex concepts simply and clearly. She introduces new words and grammar through stories and easy games, and we learn without even realizing it," says student Ksenia Kotova, fluent in Chinese. "Ren Yi always supports us, helping us not to be afraid of speaking and making mistakes. Thanks to her, I fell in love with the Chinese language and China, and she also strengthened my desire to dedicate myself to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the peoples of our two countries."

"In seven years, I've gone from volunteer to graduate student to teacher. All this time, I've felt happy to be an ambassador of friendship between China and Belarus. Language is my boat, and culture is my oars. In the future, I will definitely continue to spread the Chinese language and culture," says Ren Yi.

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — The Communist Party of China Central Committee (CPC Central Committee) and the State Council have approved the spatial coordination plan for the modernized metropolitan area (2023-2035), marking a new important step in deepening the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

According to the document released on Monday, the metropolitan area was identified as an important area for enhancing the optimization and provision of the capital's core functions, serving as the main driver for the formation of a world-class metropolitan cluster.

Moreover, it is also a key area for the inheritance and development of Chinese civilization, a leading area for regional coordinated governance and direction, and a vanguard area in the construction of “Beautiful China”.

The approved plan aims to create a world-class urban agglomeration with Beijing as its core, transform the capital into a leading model zone for the implementation of Chinese modernization, and support the construction of a world-class urban cluster in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

According to the plan, the Xiong'an New Area in Hebei Province (northern China) will be developed to high standards and quality, and the construction of the Beijing sub-city will become a new center of metropolitan development. Furthermore, through high-quality development, Beijing and Tianjin will write a new "Tale of Two Cities," and Tianjin itself will strengthen its role as a key area for international maritime shipping in northern China.

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — As China's leading robot manufacturer, Unitree Robotics recently announced that its actual shipment volume of humanoid robots in 2025 will exceed 5,500 units, and its mass production volume will exceed 6,500 units.

The company emphasizes that this figure "refers to the number of units actually sold and shipped to end customers, not the number of orders." This means the number of orders could be even higher. Sales of humanoid robots in China are expected to exceed 10,000 units in 2025, a 125 percent increase from the previous year.

Unitree Robotics' development reflects the overall evolution of the humanoid robot industry in China. Founded in 2016, the company became the first company in the world to openly market high-performance quadruped robots.

In 2025, humanoid robots increasingly appeared in unprecedented forms. Industry experts note that these demonstrations are more than just "technical stunts." "These demonstrations demonstrate the real development of robotics and can also create some commercial value," said Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree Robotics.

The year 2025 is widely recognized in the industry as the first year of mass production of humanoid robots. Data published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China shows that the country has over 140 manufacturing companies that have produced over 330 models of humanoid robots.

In March 2025, humanoid robots began to be used in 5G-enabled smart factories in China for collaborative learning in multi-machine and multi-task scenarios.

"Under the influence of artificial intelligence, the humanoid robot industry is developing faster than expected," said Zhang Yunming, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China. According to him, Chinese humanoid robots are already capable of "standing steadily, walking confidently, and running quickly," accelerating the transition from "moving on stage" to "working in a factory." At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will promote the rapid adoption of humanoid robots by conducting in-depth studies of high-value application scenarios, such as public service and work tasks, to ensure that new technologies and products are put to practical use as soon as possible.

Unitree Robotics is expanding its online and offline sales channels. On December 31, 2025, the company's first store in the country opened in Beijing's JD MALL, where users can try out its robotic products and immediately make a purchase. Unitree Robotics previously opened an official flagship store on the JD.com online platform, where it showcased the G1 and R1 humanoid robots, the Go2 robot dog, and other products.

Projections for the growth of the humanoid robot industry are impressive: the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has set a goal of achieving an annual production volume of 1 million finished humanoid robots by 2027. And the Development Research Center of the State Council of China predicts that the industry will reach 400 billion yuan (approximately $57.5 billion) by 2030, and exceed 1 trillion yuan by 2035.

The rapid mass production of Chinese humanoid robots was made possible by significant advantages in the hardware supply chain. Industry experts note that the moderate expansion of production capacity, independent control over key components, and product standardization have significantly reduced the cost of humanoid robots.

Wang Xingxing admitted, "We have advantages in production and manufacturing, and our global shipment volume is relatively large. Thanks to our well-established production and hardware, Chinese robot manufacturers have more competitive costs and a lower entry threshold."

The seemingly distant prediction that one in every two new mass-produced humanoid robots in the world would roll off the assembly line in a Chinese factory is becoming reality faster than the industry expected.

The Novosibirsk State University faculty team won the regional "Vivocacy and Health" volleyball competition for the first time. The victory was a landmark event for university sports and the first time the NSU team had ever participated in this competition. The "Vivocacy and Health" Spartakiad, which includes staff and faculty from Novosibirsk universities, includes nine events, many of which were successfully completed by NSU representatives. The university has placed third in the overall team standings for four consecutive years.

In the volleyball final, the NSU team met the NSU team and, in a tough three-set battle, won with a score of 2:1.

"Our team's victory in the Novosibirsk University Faculty Spartakiad in volleyball was ensured by team cohesion. Excellent teamwork, a champion's spirit, good physical condition, and a little luck helped our team secure victory. The game was evenly matched, but intense focus on key moments in the third, decisive set proved crucial to our success," notes Anton Mamekov, Head of the Sports Department at the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies at NSU.

The winning team consists of:

Bair Nikolaevich Tuchinov, research fellow at the Research Center for Artificial Intelligence at NSU, team captain;

Andrey Viktorovich Matveev, Head of the Laboratory of Deep Machine Learning in Physical Methods at the Institute of Intelligent Robotics at NSU;

Alexey Sergeevich Kiryutin, Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemical and Biological Physics, Faculty of Physics, NSU;

"The emotions after the victory are simply indescribable. It's pure euphoria, pride, and joy for a good game and result," says team captain Bair Turchynov. "We've proven by our example that NSU values not only scientific research, but also a healthy spirit, the will to win, and competitive passion. This is our first victory in this competition, and it could be historic for university sports."

According to the captain, the team approached the Spartakiad with particular seriousness, with regular training and careful work on the mistakes of previous years.

"Success was made possible by teamwork and a strong desire. Despite a busy schedule of lectures and meetings, we tried to train regularly, analyzed past failures, and focused on teamwork and physical fitness. This year, we developed that fighting spirit and confidence that often make all the difference," notes Bair Turchynov.

The atmosphere within the team played a special role in the victory.

"Teamwork is the foundation of our results. On the court, we understand each other without words: we back each other up, support each other after mistakes, and celebrate every successful moment. We don't have 'stars'—we're a unified team where everyone does their best for the team's success," the captain emphasizes.

For teachers, participation in competitions is not only a sport, but also an opportunity to represent the university.

"Representing NSU is a great honor and responsibility. We take the field as part of a huge university community and want students, colleagues, and fans to be proud of their alma mater. Every victory is another reason to say, 'Our university is the best and most diverse!'" says Bair Turchynov.

Anton Mamekov also talks about the special atmosphere at the competition:

"The atmosphere at the competition was incredible. The competition was intense from the very first minutes. Our opponent, NSTU, naturally had more fans than the host team. But a small group of NSU fans also cheered enthusiastically and enthusiastically for their team."

The team does not plan to stop there.

"Our plans include defending our title next year and promoting volleyball among teachers, setting an example for students. Now we have a new, ambitious reason to train," the captain adds.

Today, NSU has a modern sports infrastructure, and its gyms are fully operational for academic activities. Sports departments are open daily from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM; the Department of Physical Education implements development programs in 17 sports.

NSU faculty, staff, and students actively participate in competitions across a variety of sports, with considerable success. For example, the Novosibirsk Universiade, a 22-sport competition held annually from November to June, features 22 events, with NSU participating in 21 of them. The university has placed third overall in the team competition for four consecutive years.

The team's victory was a clear confirmation of NSU's successful combination of science, sports, and team spirit.
