Moscow, February 5 (Xinhua) — The Chinese Embassy in Russia held a gala reception for Chinese students in Moscow on Wednesday to mark the upcoming Spring Festival (Chunjie, the traditional Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar). Chinese and Russian diplomats, teachers, and students attended the reception.

In his speech, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui stated that, thanks to the strategic guidance of the two countries' leaders, educational cooperation has become a pillar of bilateral relations and is actively developing. He noted the active work of the joint Chinese-Russian Institute for Fundamental Research.

Zhang Hanhui emphasized that China and Russia have created the world's largest higher education network through inter-university associations and are constantly expanding academic exchanges. The number of students studying on a reciprocal basis in the two countries remains significant.

"These young people are more than just students: they are ambassadors of friendship between our peoples and are shaping the future of Chinese-Russian relations, contributing to the development and prosperity of both countries," the Chinese ambassador added.

Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Konstantin Mogilevsky, in turn, noted that, amid growing global competition for breakthrough scientific results, Russia and China are strengthening bilateral cooperation.

He noted that the two countries' leaders have established Years of Russian-Chinese Cooperation in Education. "The joint agenda will be extensive; it is necessary to give impetus to all areas of bilateral cooperation and educate citizens about the educational opportunities offered by Russian and Chinese universities," K. Mogilevsky emphasized.

As part of the event, representatives of Chinese and Russian students presented a creative program, performing songs, dances, instrumental folk music, and wushu demonstrations.

Beijing, February 5 (Xinhua) — China firmly supports Cuba in defending its national sovereignty and security, and opposes unjustified interference by external forces and any attempts to deprive the Cuban people of their rights to existence and development. This was stated in Beijing on Thursday by Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China.

Wang Yi made the relevant statements during talks with the special envoy of the Communist Party of Cuba and the government of this country, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, who also holds the posts of member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Cuba has long been persistently searching for a socialist path that suits its national conditions, and the country's inherent spirit of fearlessness in the face of brute force and difficulties has won wide respect from the international community.

Wang Yi emphasized that, amidst a volatile international environment, China and Cuba have consistently maintained sincere mutual trust and overcome difficult times together, having solemnly celebrated the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations last year. The situation in Latin America is currently undergoing complex and profound changes, the Chinese Foreign Minister noted, stating that upholding fairness and justice is a tradition of Chinese diplomacy.

China is ready to work with Cuba to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, continue to provide Cuba with all possible support and assistance, strengthen and develop bilateral friendly ties, and make new efforts with like-minded countries to strengthen the unity of the Global South and safeguard peace in the region and around the world, Wang Yi noted.

B. Rodríguez Parrilla, for his part, noted that Cuba and China are brothers and comrades. He expressed gratitude to China for its steadfast support of the Cuban people in resisting the external blockade and sanctions, as well as for its valuable assistance in Cuba's socioeconomic development.

According to the Cuban diplomat, Cuba is proud to be the first country in the Western Hemisphere to establish diplomatic relations with China and establish a bilateral community of shared destiny with it. Cuba supports the concept of a community of shared destiny for humanity and the four major global initiatives, added B. Rodríguez Parrilla.

He also assured that Cuba firmly adheres to the one-China principle, opposes the separatist activities of supporters of “Taiwan independence,” and is ready to work with China to implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state, strengthening cooperation in all areas. –0–

190th anniversary of Nikolai Dobrolyubov's birth

Nikolai Alexandrovich Dobrolyubov was a Russian literary critic, publicist, representative of the "Revolutionary Democrats" club, and poet. He was born on February 5, 1836, into a priest's family. He spent his childhood in Nizhny Novgorod, receiving a good education from his parents at home. It was thanks to this that he was accepted directly into his final year of study at the seminary. Even then, he began keeping a list of the books he had read and recording his impressions of them.

In 1853, Dobrolyubov enrolled in the Main Pedagogical Institute of St. Petersburg, in the history and philology department. There, he organized an underground circle, leading the students' struggle against the reactionary administration of the institute, and began publishing a handwritten newspaper, "Rumors." Nikolai was not afraid to express his sharply negative attitude toward the autocracy in works such as "On the 50th Anniversary of N.I. Grech" and "One on the Death of Nicholas I," which were also distributed beyond the institute.

The young critic's work was greatly influenced by representatives of the revolutionary democratic intelligentsia—Vissarion Belinsky, Alexander Herzen, and Nikolai Chernyshevsky, with whom he began working on the magazine Sovremennik and later on the Magazine for Education. In 1858, with the support of Nikolai Nekrasov, the satirical magazine Svistok was launched, and in 1859–60, articles on the greatest works of Russian writers appeared: "What is Oblomovism?" (about I. A. Goncharov's novel Oblomov), "The Dark Kingdom" and "A Ray of Light in the Dark Kingdom" (about the plays of A. N. Ostrovsky), and "When Will the Real Day Come?" (about I. S. Turgenev's novel On the Eve).

Dobrolyubov used books as an analysis of Russian life, turning Oblomov and Catherine into symbols of the vices of an entire class. He declared that literature was a reflection of social ills.

In May 1860, at the urging of close friends, Nikolai traveled abroad for treatment for tuberculosis. For over a year, he spent time in Germany, Switzerland, and France. He stayed in Italy for over six months, during which time events related to the national liberation movement led by Garibaldi were taking place. He used the material he collected about the Italian Revolution to expose the anti-popular nature of bourgeois liberalism and glorified the republicans (in "An Incomprehensible Strangeness," "Father Alexander Gavazzi and His Sermons," and "The Life and Death of Count Camillo Benzo Cavour").

Dobrolyubov returned to Russia in July 1861. He had failed to overcome his illness, a battle intertwined with intense work. Seeing off his friend on his final journey, Nekrasov described Nikolai Alexandrovich's biography with these words: "A poor childhood, in the home of a poor village priest; a half-starved education; then four years of feverish, tireless labor; and finally, a year abroad, spent in premonitions of death."

Although Dobrolyubov lived a short life—only 25 years—his contribution to Russia's present and future was truly invaluable. In his work, Dobrolyubov denounced despotism and the feudal system, comparing it to a prison in which all life perishes. He condemned inaction and passivity, arguing for the inevitability of the emergence of a hero-fighter. He considered public service "the highest criterion of an artist's work." It was Nikolai Alexandrovich who became one of the era's leading critics, coining such terms as "Oblomovism," "the dark kingdom," "ray of light," and others, which immediately caught on and became commonplace in discussing social phenomena.

On the 40th anniversary of the critic’s death, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin said that he was dear to “all educated and thinking Russia.”

Tehran, February 5 (Xinhua) — The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy intercepted two ships carrying contraband fuel near Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf on Thursday, the IRGC said Thursday.

A statement published on the IRGC's official news portal, Sepah News, noted that after detaining the ships based on a court order and redirecting them to the southern port city of Bushehr, IRGC units detained 15 foreign crew members and handed them over to judicial authorities for further proceedings.

The statement added that more than 1 million liters of contraband fuel were found on board the detained vessels. It noted that these ships were part of a fuel smuggling network that had been involved in recent months and were identified and intercepted through monitoring and tracking by IRGC Navy intelligence forces.

Fuel smuggling remains a serious problem in Iran, where fuel prices are among the lowest in the world. The price differential creates a lucrative market for smugglers who transport Iranian fuel to neighboring countries, where prices are significantly higher. Iranian officials estimate that the country loses billions of US dollars annually due to this illicit trade.

Moscow, February 5 (Xinhua) — In response to the expulsion of an employee of its embassy in Berlin, Russia declared a diplomatic employee of the German Embassy in Moscow persona non grata. This was announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The head of the German diplomatic mission was handed a note declaring the diplomatic employee of the German Embassy in Moscow persona non grata as a symmetrical response to the aforementioned decision by the German government, which bears full responsibility for the new escalation in bilateral relations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its official website.

On January 22, the Russian Embassy in Germany confirmed that the head of the Russian diplomatic mission, Sergei Nechayev, had been summoned to the German Foreign Ministry in connection with the detention of a woman suspected of spying for the Russian Federation. They reported that the Russian diplomat "was issued a protest regarding the detention the previous day by German law enforcement agencies of a German-Ukrainian citizen suspected of spying for the Russian Federation, and was informed that the embassy employee, who allegedly served as her handler, had been declared persona non grata." The embassy pointed out the absurdity of the claims and emphasized that Berlin's unfriendly actions will not go unanswered.
