Sergei Netesov: Flu cases are declining

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The 2025-2026 flu season is very similar to the season of two years ago and differs significantly from last year's in its timing. The peak incidence this season was recorded approximately two months earlier than last year's. The dominant subtype of influenza A was the H3N2 subtype, while last season's flu was the H1N1 subtype. Sergei Netesov, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Head of the Laboratory of Bionanotechnology, Microbiology, and Virology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Novosibirsk State University, commented on the situation.

— Almost all the forecasts for the current epidemic season have already come to pass. A slight increase in flu cases is expected in Siberian regions in the near future, but the peak is behind us. According to the A.A. Smorodintsev Influenza Research Institute, this peak was recorded in weeks 51-52 of last year. This was followed by a sharp decline. This trend continued until weeks 1-2 of this year, after which a resurgence was observed, but certainly not as significant as at the end of last year. The decline in cases during the New Year holidays is natural—healthcare facilities are not operating at full capacity, many patients do not have to go to work, and they do not need to provide sick leave, so only a fraction of cases are officially registered. This decline has given way to a slight resurgence, which is still ongoing in some regions, and is expected to be followed by a further decline. A resurgence in flu cases is not expected in the spring of this epidemic season. At the same time, the proportion of diseases caused by viruses other than the influenza virus is growing: adenoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and common coronaviruses, so it’s too early to rest on our laurels.

Looking at the incidence curve for the current epidemic season and the graph for the same period last year, we can see that they are identical, but they occur in different periods. Last year, the peak incidence occurred in weeks 10-12 of 2025. It's worth noting that the previous epidemic season was unique due to this shift in incidence. The current epidemic season has returned to the traditional timing typical of previous years.

The hospitalization curves for patients with a clinical diagnosis of influenza in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons are similar. However, the peak reached in the current epidemic season is significantly higher than last year's.

The main causative agent of the disease remains the influenza A virus subtype H3N2. Vaccination, as always, is an effective preventative measure, but it's too late now. The best time to get vaccinated is September and October, when people will be protected from this virus before the peak in cases, which typically occurs in mid-November and December. I believe vaccination is absolutely essential every two to three years, and for the elderly and patients in high-risk groups—those with diabetes, organ transplant recipients, those with serious chronic diseases, and those with immunodeficiency—it should be done annually.

Fifty-two-year-old Zhou Banghui lives in Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County, Xining City, Qinghai Province. He is the heir to the Hehuang Shadow Theatre, an intangible cultural heritage of national significance. Zhou Banghui began studying this art in 1996 and has remained inextricably linked with shadow theatre for nearly three decades. In 2011, he founded the 13-member Xinyi Theatre Troupe, which performs in courtyards, squares, and temple fairs in rural areas, telling familiar stories through light and shadow.

With the expansion of its performance space, Hehuang Shadow Theatre has quietly expanded beyond the village. In 2025, the Xinyi troupe performed over 120 performances, approximately a sixth of which took place in the urban area of Xining. Tourist attractions and shopping malls have become new venues for the theater.

As the Spring Festival approaches, the troupe is becoming increasingly busy, with over twenty performances scheduled. When Zhou Banghui talks about his future plans, his eyes smile and sparkle with energy: "I hope that through our performances, more people will fall in love with Hehuang Shadow Theatre."

"Living like the Chinese" has become a trend: what is the "Chinese lifestyle"?

Nightscapes of snow-covered Heilongjiang Province have garnered over 5 million likes on international short video platforms; the internet is awash with covers of classic Chinese songs performed by foreign users. Recently, the trend of "living like the Chinese" has sparked a wave of imitation of the "Chinese way of life," which is becoming increasingly visible worldwide, and China is becoming increasingly attractive to many people around the world.

The ongoing “boom for everything Chinese” is not a sudden and random phenomenon, but a natural result of a long-term accumulation of quantitative changes.

The number of foreign apps featuring Chinese miniseries on various streaming platforms has already exceeded 300; through watching series, viewers gain a vivid understanding of modern China; global sales of the Chinese video game "Black Myth: Wukong" have exceeded 28 million copies, and the story of Journey to the West has resonated widely with international players; thanks to the constant expansion of the "circle of visa-free countries," travel to China is becoming increasingly convenient, and many foreign tourists, having learned about China, fall in love with it during their visits.

The question is not why the world is “falling in love” with China, but that the real and multifaceted China itself deserves the world’s admiration.

As internet users have aptly noted, the dissemination of culture is never a condescending "imposition of culture," but rather a "cultural overflow" with sufficient cultural development and high cultural confidence. Having pierced the fog of slander and disinformation and broken the shackles of stereotypes, foreign internet users were able to directly experience China—a country that is authentic, attractive, and worthy of respect. How can one not admire China's centuries-old, outstanding traditional culture, its new and exciting technological achievements, and its safe and convenient environment?

Today, we view the world as equals and perceive it with openness and trust. While we rejoice in this, we must also clearly recognize that a long way remains to truly understand China. But rest assured, as a prosperous China attracts increasing global attention, a resonance between China and the rest of the world will inevitably emerge. Through communication and mutual understanding, Chinese culture will undoubtedly blossom more luxuriantly and richly in the garden of global civilization.

The "Chinese trend" is sweeping social media worldwide: American media explain why "Chinese style" has become the new fashion.

Recently, the website of the American monthly technology magazine Wired published an article dedicated to the "Chinese trend" gaining popularity on global social media. It notes that people's lives are quietly entering a "very Chinese period."

Recently, the internet meme "very Chinese time in my life" has gained popularity abroad. Many users jokingly say, "You met me at the most Chinese time of my life," enthusiastically sampling dim sum and donning fashionable Chinese-style sports jackets. As the trend spread, celebrities such as comedian Jimmy Ouyang and internet celebrity Hasan Piker joined in. Simultaneously, derivative memes have emerged, such as "Chinamaxxing" (meaning "acting more and more Chinese") and "u will turn Chinese tomorrow" (often used as a positive wish).

The article analyzes that while this shift in the overall atmosphere is difficult to accurately measure, perceptions of China have indeed undergone subtle shifts over the past year. Many Americans, especially the younger generation, are showing growing interest in Chinese technologies, brands, and even cities. Their purchases of made-in-China goods are significantly higher than before, and they are truly embracing this "Chinese lifestyle" experience.

Another important reason China has become the subject of such heated debate is its deep integration into everyday life around the world. No matter where you are on Earth, there's a high probability that you're surrounded by "made in China" products. The article cites examples: mobile phones, laptops, and robot vacuum cleaners are likely made in China; the Labubu doll, which has conquered the world, originates from China; solar panels that supply electricity to countries in the Global South are manufactured in China; and even the widely acclaimed open-source large-scale artificial intelligence models were also generated in China…

The article notes that China has played a key role in global supply chains for decades. However, only in the past year have many Americans truly realized how deeply they rely on Chinese products. In today's interconnected world, consumers can directly communicate with Chinese factories through apps. Meanwhile, the language barrier is gradually fading, thanks to the latest large language models excelling at translating between Chinese and English. While some apps still need improvement in localization, users simply tap the "Translate" button to understand content in Chinese, significantly reducing the barrier to cross-cultural communication.

The article further notes that, amidst the constant improvement of infrastructure and rapid urban development, China's achievements are increasingly attracting international attention. In recent years, as global discussions about diversifying development paths have deepened, China's practices have provided the world with new benchmarks, such as its impressive modern urban infrastructure and efficient high-speed rail network. As writer Minh Tran notes, the international community's interest in China actually reflects a shared human desire for a better life. This fascination with the "Chinese style" is perhaps a clear manifestation of this shared aspiration.

China and Central Asia: Cooperation Results in 2025 and Prospects

The year 2025 marked a turning point in the development of relations between China and the countries of Central Asia. Against a backdrop of global economic instability, the two sides demonstrated sustained growth in trade and investment, as well as significant institutional strengthening of the regional cooperation framework.

According to Chinese customs data, trade between China and the five Central Asian countries exceeded $100 billion for the first time in 2025, reaching $106.3 billion. This represents a 12% increase compared to 2024, and trade turnover has virtually doubled over the past four years. China strengthened its position as the largest trading partner of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, and in 2025, it also became the largest trade partner of Tajikistan for the first time.

Experts note that, amid fragmented global trade, cooperation between China and Central Asia is becoming an example of commitment to the principles of openness and multilateralism. Joint promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the development of new logistics routes and multimodal transportation, have played a significant role in this.

Trade: From Raw Materials to Technology

The structure of mutual trade continues to change. China's exports to the region in 2025 amounted to $71.2 billion (11%). Industrial equipment, high-tech products, and goods related to green development accounted for the majority of these. Imports from Central Asia reached $35.1 billion (14%). In addition to energy, supplies of chemical products, metals, and agricultural goods with higher added value are growing, demonstrating the gradual diversification of the region's economy.

Investments: Growth, Drivers, and Risks

Along with growing trade, Chinese investment is also increasing. China's accumulated foreign direct investment in Central Asia increased from $19.6 billion in 2016 to $35.9 billion by mid-2025. Approximately 90% of this investment is concentrated in three countries: Kazakhstan (32%), Uzbekistan (30%), and Turkmenistan (27%). Kazakhstan remains the largest recipient of Chinese capital ($11.4 billion).

Uzbekistan emerged as the most dynamic recipient, with Chinese investment increasing to $10.7 billion in the first half of 2025. Experts attribute this growth to institutional liberalization, the size of the domestic market, and active political dialogue between Tashkent and Beijing.

As analysts note, Chinese investments remain attractive due to the relatively simple conditions for attracting them and their focus on infrastructure, energy, and industry.

Why Central Asia is Betting on China

For a number of countries in the region, China has become a key investor. For Tajikistan, Chinese capital plays a leading role due to its geographic proximity, developed logistics links, and the absence of stringent political conditions. Experts note that, unlike Western investment, Chinese projects are often implemented more quickly and with fewer associated requirements.

Kyrgyzstan: From Agreements to Practical Projects

The development of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and China deserves special attention. In 2025, cooperation within the China-Central Asia format transitioned to the practical implementation of previously reached agreements. China remains one of Kyrgyzstan's key trade and economic partners, and the range of Kyrgyz exports is expanding, including agricultural and processed products.

Transport infrastructure development remains a priority. Preparations for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project, which is of strategic importance for the country's transit potential, will continue in 2025. At the same time, road corridors and border crossings are being modernized.

In the energy sector, cooperation focuses on grid modernization and the development of renewable energy sources, such as small hydroelectric power plants and solar power. In the industrial sector, projects are being implemented to create industrial zones and logistics centers with Chinese capital, focused on processing products and job creation.

Institutional strengthening and future plans

The China-Central Asia mechanism, including the work of the Secretariat, ministerial formats, and specialized platforms, has become an important element of regional cooperation. The second China-Central Asia Summit, held in June 2025, identified key priorities for the coming years: developing industrial cooperation, green energy, the digital economy, and innovation.

Cooperation between China and Central Asian countries is shifting from quantitative growth to a more qualitative and diversified model. Amid global challenges, this format is strengthening as a key factor in economic stability, regional connectivity, and long-term development.

Speaking at the fifth session of the 14th People's Congress of Guangdong Province, which opened on January 26, Governor Meng Fanli stated that the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is being actively advanced during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025). The region's combined GDP is expected to exceed 15 trillion yuan in 2025.

In recent years, the "tight connection" of infrastructure between the three regions has accelerated. According to the Guangdong 2025 Economic and Social Development Plan Implementation Report and the draft 2026 plan, intercity railways managed by the Greater Bay Area have transitioned from "linear planning" to "network operation," with the length of rail transport exceeding 4,000 km. The number of active cross-border passenger shipping routes has reached 17.

According to the report, the Greater Bay Area will see accelerated development of cross-border low-level air transport services by 2025. Several intercity and cross-border helicopter routes connecting Shenzhen with Hong Kong and Macao have been launched. The flight time from Shenzhen Airport to Hong Kong is just 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong high-speed railway carried over 35 million cross-border passengers, a 17.8% increase over the previous year. Average daily traffic on the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge reached approximately 14,000 vehicles, an increase of 19.8%.

At the same time, the implementation of a "soft connection" of rules and mechanisms in the Greater Bay Area has accelerated. Currently, 198 frequently requested administrative services in the three regions are being implemented cross-border. The "Cross-Border Financial Management" pilot project involved 175,000 individual investors, and the volume of cross-border remittances reached 129.2 billion yuan.

According to the report, 84 innovation and entrepreneurship centers for young people from Hong Kong and Macao have been established in the region, where more than 7,000 projects are being implemented.

February 5, 2026 Healthcare

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) commended the signing of a new $5.88 billion funding package in the United States. This decision reaffirms the United States' continued role as a key leader in the global fight against HIV, UNAIDS stated.

US President Donald Trump signed the bill into law on February 3. The document allocates $4.6 billion to support HIV programs under the America First Global Health strategy, $1.25 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and $45 million to support UNAIDS.

UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima thanked the US President and Congress for their continued support for global health, emphasizing that American investments will ensure life-saving assistance for millions of people around the world and will help maintain the effectiveness and efficiency of the global HIV response.

The new law advances the implementation of the America First Global Health strategy, which aligns with UNAIDS' commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 and accelerates the U.S.'s strategic transition to a more independent response to HIV. For more than two decades, American investments have been the leading driver of global progress, saving millions of lives and supporting countries in their fight against the epidemic, the program noted.

UNAIDS pledged to maximize the effectiveness of its funding by providing technical expertise, data, and strategic support to countries and communities, and by working closely with the US Government, the Global Fund, and national partners. The US has remained a key partner since UNAIDS's founding in 1996, the organization noted.
