What is known about the new "special situations" fund?

The fund that is being created Alfa-Bank and A1 (a company specializing in distressed assets) are planning to launch a fund for investments in "special situations." A1's management revealed some details of the project:

The investment amount will be up to 30 billion rubles; the key investment vector is "distressed assets"; the investment horizon is up to three years; Alfa-Bank will be the anchor investor, A1 will seek partners, and Alfa-Capital will handle management.

"Companies facing difficult situations will be given a chance for a new lease on life. The fund will help resolve disputes, achieve settlements, and achieve profitability," the project's authors note.

However, A1's activities in this area have been repeatedly criticized. Businesses have criticized its methods and complained of corporate raiding attempts. A1 is a creditor of Viktor Baturin, who is suing his sister (the widow of former Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov).

What assets do A1 and Alfa-Bank plan to acquire?

The list of assets that the "special situations" fund will work with includes companies experiencing serious problems, including:

Conflicts between capital owners and management; increased debt burden; ineffective business management; falling under sanctions; the departure of Western owners amid the imposed restrictions.

One of our key areas of activity is working with Russian companies owned by foreign partners. Given the challenging geopolitical situation, such businesses often lose their ability to effectively conduct business, and this new project will help them stay afloat and continue their productive work.

February 26, 2026 UN

The main news of the day at the UN and around the world: human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank, new attacks on the population and infrastructure of Ukraine, "genocidal" violence in Sudan, and US First Lady Melania Trump's presidency of the UN Security Council.

Gaza and the West Bank

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk presented to the Human Rights Council A report on the Occupied Palestinian Territory covering the period from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2025, he said, reveals serious violations by both Israel and Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups. While the ceasefire in Gaza on October 11, 2025, brought some relief, it did not lead to sustainable protection for civilians, Türk stated. He also expressed grave concern about Israel's efforts to expand its control in the West Bank.

Strikes against Ukraine

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that last night, as a result of a large-scale drone and missile strike, as well as fighting throughout Ukraine, civilians were killed and wounded, with homes and infrastructure damaged. At a briefing in New York, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the Organization condemns attacks by Russian armed forces on civilians and infrastructure. He also reported that, according to local authorities and UN partners, nearly 7,000 people were evacuated from frontline areas in eastern Ukraine last month.

Violence in Sudan

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned today of a catastrophic situation in Sudan. He presented his new report to the Human Rights Council, documenting egregious cases of violence, including massacres and rape. Meanwhile, Mohamed Chande Othman, Chairman of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission to Sudan, reminded the Council of expert findings that the actions of the Rapid Intervention Force during the capture of El Fasher bore "signs of genocide" against the non-Arab Zaghawa and Fur communities.

Melania Trump at the UN Security Council

First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, will preside over a meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, March 2, following the United States' month-long presidency. The meeting will focus on children, technology, and education in conflict. Responding to a reporter's question, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed today that this will be the first time a First Lady or First Gentleman has presided over a Security Council meeting. During the meeting, UN Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo will deliver a briefing on behalf of the Secretary-General.

Havana, February 26 (Xinhua) — Cuban authorities are maintaining contact with the American side, including the US State Department and the Coast Guard. They expressed their willingness to cooperate in the investigation of the boat incursion into Cuban waters on Wednesday, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio said on Thursday.

Cuban authorities will request information from Washington about the individuals involved, the vessel, and other details through existing bilateral mechanisms, the Deputy Foreign Minister noted.

"This is not an isolated incident," the diplomat said. "For more than 60 years, Cuba has been the victim of aggression and countless terrorist attacks, most of which were organized, financed, and carried out from US territory."

C. Fernandez reaffirmed Cuba's absolute and categorical commitment to the fight against all forms of terrorism.

He said the country's counter-terrorism efforts are fully consistent with international law and are a central component of national defense, necessary to protect the country's sovereignty, as well as the lives, security, and well-being of its people.
