BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) — Exchanging sorted household waste for everyday goods, using biodegradable and eco-friendly packaging, and installing air conditioners that run on carbon-free energy… These ubiquitous scenes are gradually shaping the "green" image of China's development.
Currently, the Beautiful China initiative is being actively implemented throughout China, contributing to the steady improvement of the ecological environment, making the benefits of green development tangible and accessible to all.
TRANSFORMING TRASH INTO LIFE'S BENEFIT
A special "supermarket" located in Miantan Village, Shexian County, Huangshan City, has already become a living example of building an ecological civilization in Anhui Province (East China).
This supermarket's staff inventory the household waste sorted by local residents, including plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and other waste, and credit residents' personal accounts with points that can be exchanged for soy sauce, liquid detergent, and other everyday items.
Due to geographical features, many villages in Huangshan are built along waterways and are quite scattered, making it difficult to collect, store, and transport household waste using traditional methods.
"In the past, garbage was often piled along riverbanks, and during heavy rains, residents would simply dump the waste into the river and let the current carry it away," said Song Xingcai, head of the Law Enforcement and Comprehensive Administrative Law Enforcement Center in Shendu Township, Shexian County.
According to him, the system of exchanging waste for points helps strengthen residents' understanding that "caring for the environment brings tangible benefits."
In 2016, Huangshan City first implemented the "Waste-for-Goods Supermarket" model, which was later expanded to the "Eco-Beauty Supermarket" format. Beginning in 2025, the city implemented local standards for these supermarkets, which not only expanded the range of goods available for exchange but also promoted the inclusion of environmentally friendly practices such as volunteering and sustainable agricultural production in the points system.
For many years, the "Eco-Beauty Supermarket" system in Huangshan has attracted approximately 300,000 people annually, resulting in the recycling of over 3,000 tons of waste. This not only reduced labor and transportation costs associated with traditional waste disposal but also empowered local residents to protect the "green mountains and emerald waters" through their actions.
ZERO EMISSIONS ENVIRONMENTAL BENCHMARK
As the permanent venue for the Boao Forum for Asia (BOA), Dongyu Island in Boao, Hainan Province, southern China, serves as both a window for international dialogue and a bulwark for China to achieve its goals of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.
The zero-carbon demonstration zone located here is the first model project in China that has achieved zero carbon emissions in the entire area through modernization and renovation.
Since the launch of this demonstration zone, energy conservation and energy consumption reduction measures have been continuously strengthened, the electrification of energy consumption in transport, ships, and gardening equipment has been promoted, and a carbon management system has been established to enable real-time monitoring of carbon intensity.
According to data, in 2019, the volume of carbon emissions from energy consumption of buildings and infrastructure facilities in this demonstration zone amounted to 11.3 thousand tons, and by 2024 this figure will have already reached absolute zero.
Hu Yaowen, Director of the Hainan Branch of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, noted that the demonstration zone's construction maximizes the use of local natural resources, reducing the use of high-cost technologies and demonstrating a zero-carbon construction model based on phased modernization using appropriate technologies.
The demonstration zone will continue to explore zero-carbon city management practices, aiming to disseminate and implement relevant experiences in tropical regions and countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.
THE GREEN FUTURE OF CHINESE ECOLOGY
In 2025, China's ecological environment has improved thanks to continuous efforts in pollution control and sustainable green development.
According to the data, the average PM2.5 concentration in the country last year was 28 micrograms per cubic meter, a decrease of 4.4 percent year-on-year. The proportion of days with good or excellent air quality over the past year increased by 1.9 percentage points year-on-year to 89.3 percent.
The Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China has set its key tasks for 2026, including sustainably and in-depth progress in implementing the most complex tasks of combating environmental pollution, strengthening supervision over ecological conservation and restoration, and accelerating scientific and technological innovation in the field of ecology and environment.
